Went in and the place was absolutely dead quiet. Not a soul in there. Which is a shame. The decor was very very 1980s Mexican restaurant run by Americans. Our food came out really quickly, and I was pleased with all of it I ordered the appetizer sampler and the portions were great and everything was fried to perfection. With a massive dollop of guacamole along with it. Our waiter was also on point with refills. My chili rellenos were all so excellent, however, the batter on them was more fluffy and cake like than crispy, which may not be everybody's thing, but I really enjoyed it. First off the server Sara was very helpful and nice. She was running the show - waitress, bartender etc. They have vegan options. I attempted to try the beef fajitas and they were severely burnt. I was served a vegan plate with dairy sour cream. The rice was partially cooked. The flavor of the dish was off. I was sick to my stomach a few bites in. Next my partner got a lunch special with 3 dishes in it. He ordered chicken and got all beef. The tops of the enchiladas were covered with a thick 1 inch layer of cheese that would clog anyone up for weeks if not months. The flavor was disgusting. The food was excellent! I especially love that anything on their menu can be made vegan. So cool! (I just wish they'd advertise that better so more people would buy vegan). We ordered the taco salad and enchiladas, both with vegan "chicken" strips. Delicious! We also ordered guacamole, which was fresh and authentic. The service was also great, very pleasant and accommodating. The ambiance was also great. This is a terrible restaurant. I have been going to this restaurant once a month with a men's group. 3 out of the last four times the food was completely cold. Tonight we got the worst waiter ever. It took over an hour before any food was served and again it was cold. It was an hour and a half before the last meal was served and during that time we received no drink refills. Two of our group had to send the food back and two others did not get what they ordered but were unwilling to wait for new food. At the end of the night all but two of the checks were wrong and one of our party just paid for everyone so we could leave since we had been there for over two hours by that point. I am soooo far behind on my reviews. I came here in May and forgot to do my review you'll now. I took my mom here for her birthday. She loves Mexican food and we were out in this area for a weekend vacation. The server was nice. She recommend the Pina Colada for me, it was nice and not overly sweet. At the end of our meal, she got us the fried ice cream for dessert. It was delicious! I don't remember at this point what entrees we got, but I remember being impressed with the rice. Return visit 3 weeks after first - did a lunchtime meal. Walked in around 2:30 to empty restaurant (3 tables). We waited a few minutes for someone to acknowledge and then seat us. Background music was loud and fast - we felt rushed when we shouldn't have. Ordered a fajita trio (beef, chicken & shrimp) and a chili relleno. (cheese). Fajitas proteins all tasted the same- blackened seasoning. Chili relleno was wet and greasy. Refried beans and rice had minimal flavor. Neither meal impressed us. Salsa is on okay Mexican restaurant but not a wow. To me they're your standard fare Mexican meal. Probably won't be back unless friends beg us to join them there. read more

My first visit, so I ordered basic taco plate with rice and beans and chicken tortilla soup to try. Rice and beans all dried out from sitting under heat lamp too long ( says hostess). She brought fresh order, they weren't dried out but still very band and dry. Ground beef taco and chicken taco both very salty. My guess is chicken from a can with seasoning added. Ok, we looked them up and really wasn't sure what to expect. They are 5 Stars then 3 stars kind of all over the place. We stopped in on Black Friday the service was very good. They had 2 for 1 drinks and the sangria packed a punch with no shortage of alcohol. Everyone liked the chips and salsa. We Hawaiian burritos with steak very good. One got Fajitas with steak nice amount of steak. One got enchilada and everyone liked their meal. I think some people are being a little hard on the place or they are not constant. Another Mexican Restaurant, I sometime ask myself aren't they all the same? I think it's difficult to be anything but typical if you're a Mexican Restaurant. I've found very few that separate themselves from the one down the road no matter what direction you go, it seems the business model has long ago been established - pile on the high carbohydrate selections, serve giant pre-mix margaritas and make sure the draft Mexican Beers are served ice cold in a heavy glass, of course don't forget the bottomless basket of free chips and salsa. Honestly I rarely love Mexican Restaurants that have names I can pronounce - the easier the pronunciation the less authentic is my rule of thumb. I found myself here two nights in a row, no it wasn't because I'm a die hard Mexican food fan or that I can't resist the urge to over indulge - this was more about accommodating a few out of town work associates, the close proximity of our hotel and uhm that's it I guess or yeah it was happy hour, dinner time and we wanted to wash away the work day. First visit - a Tuesday night this place was busy, it's seems Tuesday night is Mexican Food night in Tavares. The restaurant was filled with servers running around delivering food and drinks from the bar, our server was extremely friendly dressed for tips in her short shorts and making multiple stops at our table to bring items that she forgot, if she was solely judged on attentiveness she gets five stars because she was at our table apologizing all night. Our drinks arrived one at a time the complimentary chips and salsa were refilled often and our second round of queso arrived long before our entrees, it was so obvious the kitchen was struggle she threw in the cheese dip for free. I ordered the steak chimichanga it arrived hot with lots of beans and rice along with the assortment of guacamole, sour cream the chopped vegetables and another one of the many beers we consumed. The food looked like I expected, it tasted as I expected and the portion was what I expected. Second Visit - the following Wednesday night, the atmosphere was very different, the restaurant was empty, the wait service was a mere skeleton of the night before and it was much more subdued it was like the festival had ended the night before and we arrived after the party ended. Our server was focused but boring, no bubbly personality it was as if he drew the short straw and had to work, but he did provide everything we needed but again forgetful (it now appears training is not a priority here). I decided to scale back, I had a few chips and ordered the number nine combo - the stuffed fried poblano, a chicken tamale and a ground beef taco no rice, no beans and a half dozen ice cold Dos Equis ambers to wash it all down. Had to go visit MD up in God's Waiting Room aka Lake County, FL. Since both she and QB like Messikin kinda junk, I figured it'd be path of least resistance. Well, that's one way to describe it and Montezuma is STILL getting revenge too. Once we were seated inside they didn't take very long to haul out a basket of chips and salsa. Chips seemed somewhat freshly fried. Salsa, however, had consistency of tomato paste rather than chopped/diced tomato. It was a wee bit, uh: mushy??? I guess I shoulda been forewarned when I saw a Sysco truck sitting out there. Sigh! No apps, just lunch. MD gets fajitas, QB gets enchiladas w. red sauce (chicken for both) and I order beef chimichanga. All 3 came with refried beans and that same crappy rice U usually find at most of these raggedy Messikin dumps. I think I know where that Sysco truck plays into things now. Ay, chihuahua! MD fajitas came out on a sizzling cast iron plate and that bugger was loaded with onion, green and red peppers plus at least half a pound of rather bland and dry chicken slices. Also another plate filled with guacamole, sour cream, pico, lettuce and all that crap. Add a few warmish flour tortillas and there it was. Yawn... QB plate was nowhere nearly that generous. Two measly looking enchiladas in a bland red sauce with that same bland chicken, Sysco rice and beans. My chimichangas were also pretty measly and had bland beef instead. I should've told them to skip the queso blanco, too. Don Sysco at it again!!! MD wondered aloud about fried ice cream. Waitress said they had it. I should've been more insistent that they keep it. Frozen hard ball of albeit decent vanilla bean ice cream in a typical tortilla shell sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. Ice cream ball (hard as a rock) was covered in what appeared to be Frosted Flakes cereal and a little toasted coconut. They cloaked the blobby ball of vanilla vacuity in a cumulus cloud of cream and gave us three spoons, a tiny cup of caramel sauce and a second one of chocolate sauce. This joint used to be Angelo's, a moderately decent Italian place. Decor now has been replaced by Mexican themed stuff and loud Mexican music instead of Frank Sinatra et al. Same peach colored doorways, wrought iron section dividers, hard, un-comfy chairs and big wooden bar; floor plan still the same too. All I have to say is that if this country wants to stop its southern-border troubles...hmmm. Send this place to cater there. I bet all those people would turn back around toward home, knowing that Montezuma still IS getting revenge all these centuries later. I'd just suggest they change the name in the meantime to Don Fran Sysco's! read more

Had a 10% off food only coupon and had been wanting to try this place so we took advantage. It is nice inside, a little more upscale than your typical Mexican restaurant, but not a Mexican restaurant atmosphere. There is a nice bar area with TVs. I sat on the outdoor patio, which is basically a big lanai. There are ceiling fans and it is very nice and clean. The server was attentive and brought the chips and salsa and took our drink orders very quickly. It was happy hour, two for one drinks. Ordered two mango margaritas. They were smaller than usual and tasted exactly like drinking Bath and Body Works scented smoothie. There seem to be zero alcohol and the taste was nothing like mango. The salsa was good, but a little spicy. We requested a salsa refill and it tasted nothing like the first one. It was extremely thick and tasted like tomato paste, without much seasoning. It was rather disgusting. The chips were good. The food was good and the portions were large. We had left the coupon on the table as to not forget to use it. The server saw it and took it and said she would get it onto the bill and bring it out. When she came back with the bill, no 10% off! We had to ask about it and she said "oh I will have them fix that." Had we not noticed no discount ...., so sketchy. I will try it again, but it didn't leave a very good impression. read more

I ordered the Steak Fajitas and have to say it was the worst meal that I've ever had at a restaurant. The steak was not seasoned and the whole meal was very, very bland! I was really looking forward to this meal, but ended up being so disappointed. I had this delivered to me, so it's not like I could send it back. The first "gourmet mejicano" in our area, we've been to Salsa twice since it opened late November. The food is authentic and pricier than your Tex-Mex restaurants but the culinary experience is superior. We tried the Brussels Sprouts halved and charred with a three-chili glaze that was perfectly caramelized. The portion size was good for $8. Another good value was the Ceviche with Shrimp served with four flour tortillas, $12. The Molcajete with Shrimp ($21) and the Taco Trio ($9) were smaller in portion in relation to their price but were excellent on every level. The menu is still evolving and will likely continue to develop as the chef whom we talked to on our second visit is enthusiastic about exploring the best of Mexico's 33 cuisines. They have a full bar and the handmade Tamarind Margarita is amazing; tamarind pulp, agave syrup, fresh squeezed lemon and lime, $9. Mexican beers on draft are $4.25. In other more cosmopolitan areas like South Florida and downtown Orlando, you may find restaurants like Salsa but here in Lake County it is the first of its kind; world-class chef bringing a taste of Mexico's myriad unique and gourmet cuisines. read more

This is a new restaurant so of course I had to try it. I have to say we were highly disappointed! First the chips came out and seem to be the Tostitos chips that come from the bag that you can buy at the store... For our meal I ordered the chicken pineapple salsa tacos while my friend ordered a sampler of the 3 varieties of tacos. When they arrived my tacos were very inconsistent in the filling and 2 had enough for one fork full while my friend's tacos were very full (pic attached). The meat had the consistency of something you'd receive in a school lunch. When we got our bills my friend paid in cash and did not receive the full amount of her change back. Not a bad experience. Have been there several times when it was an Italian restaurant. I think it is still run by the same family. Don't know why they dumped the Italian and went Mexican. The food was good. Salsa spicy and thick. Had the steak street taco plate. Didn't really need the double taco shells, that's a lot of carbs. Side guacamole was fresh and garlicky. Can't speak for the drinks as we had Coca-cola. Likely we will return but it's a 40 mile r/t from The Villages, and we have several very good Mex in this area. Prices seem a tad high, so there is no compelling reason to put Salsa on my regular rotation. read more

I went on a Tuesday about 4:30. The place was busy. I went to the bar. I ordered the "house margarita special". It was two little plastic cups with sickeningly sweet syrup. I sat there for 40 minutes-never saw the bartender again. I mean he literally poured my plastic cups and vanished. When he did come back, I told him the drink was un drinkable and no I wouldn't be ordering any food. I ask if it was customary for the bar to be unattended for so long. He shrugged his shoulders and slapped my bill in front of me and walked away again. I guess they have a captive audience with the people who live in the neighborhood behind the restaurant. read more

We eat an all veggie diet. The staff let us know that they have several vegetarian items that can be made "Vegan "style. They were able to guide us and even adding Vegan cheese to the vegetable burrito. Also had the vegetarian Molcajetes, would definitely get both again. Food was outstanding, best Mexican we have had in the area. Salsa was excellent, red sauce on the burrito outstanding. This was takeout, drove 30 minutes each way and well worth the time.
