A first visit to Oak Island and Salt 64 with friends. We cannot recommend this restaurant too highly. From the service which was friendly, efficient, and attentive without being intrusive, to the food that across the menu from starters to entrees to desserts, and then cocktail and wine service was superb and very attractively priced, the nine of us were unable to find weak link in our delightful experience. Our group tried the Sunset Bisque which is best described as over-the-top--a velvetty melange of crab, lobster, shrimp, and scallops, bathed in a creamy richness tinged with a hint of sherry. Despite the large serving, the bisque stayed warm and irresistible to the last spoonful. Both the Plank and Ceasar salads proved excellent and large enough to share between two or even three diners. The first was enhanced with diced tomatoes, crumbled blue cheese, and chopped bacon; the second lightly dressed in the traditionl fashion with a large lacy parmasean chip. Our final starter was the aptly named and definitely addictive Crack Toast--a slice of browned baguette draped in four melted cheeses with a hint of garlic. Our entrees included baby back ribs--not one but two full racks that were lightly smoked and flavored with either a dry rub with just enough heat to leave a cloying tingle on the lips after each bite or a delightful Eastern Carolina sauce. Or you can pick both, with the ribs dry-rubbed and a small tub of sauce on the side. Our group also sampled the Parma Grana Crusted Chicken Breast, deliciously seasoned with basil and garlic and nestled amid a lightly seasoned Mediterranean salad; the delicious Pecan-fried Chicken Breast resting on a flawless waffle glazed with bourbon-maple infused syrup and a bacon jam; the phenomenal Voodoo Scallops, perfectly seared, flavored with orange and pomegranate and accompanied by a fennel potato salad; and lastly, the Salt 64 daily special which that evening was a pan-seared Red Snapper that left multiple layers of flavor dancing on the tongue. Our entrees were accompanied by the whipped Yukon Gold mashed potatoes or the potato cakes--both of which added a delicious heft to the already substantial serving. For dessert we tried one slice of seven-layer chocolate cake, and a caramel sauced bread pudding. The single slice of seven layer cake was enough for all nine of us to sample and we observed smaller tables getting the same substantial serving. If there was any quibble, it would be the loudness due to every table being filled and poor noise-reducing acoustics, but we felt this small point was far outweighed by the fabulous large portions of delicious (largely- locally sourced) food at very reasonable prices, and of course the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff. This restaurant was wonderful. I had the crab stuffed flounder with goat cheese grits. That was so fabulous. The flavors were wonderful. I also had fried shrimp with a Yum Yum sauce that was excellent. I do recommend making reservations as they were very busy. read more

Salt has been the talk of the town since it's opening and reservations have been hard to get because of it's popularity but a week ago I was able to get reservations through Yelp. My husband and I were looking forward to our date night but unfortunately it was not meant to be. The restaurant was full and the only table available for us was next to the bathrooms. We refused to take it and after many excuses from the hostess they were not able to accommodate us with a better table. Very disappointed! Why would anyone want to sit next to the bathrooms? read more

The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because the last time I ate there with a group we were seated in the bar which was VERY noisy. Salt64 is consistently amazing, both food and service. The atmosphere is casual but with class, so it is a great date night spot or a fun place for a girls night. There are so many things on the menu that I'd recommend, but the short list would be the crack bread app, the OG Grille salad, the wedge salad, the shrimp pasta, steaks, scallops, and cheesecake. Absolutely phenomenal in every aspect. We've needed a restaurant of this caliber on the island for so long and its finally happened. From appetizers and drinks to dessert everything was perfectly prepared and presented - including hand stuffed blue cheese olives for the martini! Our server (Breia? I'm so sorry if I got this wrong) was knowledgeable and so very helpful and professional. She was familiar with every item on the menu that we inquired about and her suggestions were spot on. This restaurant is still operating on a "soft opening" and feeling out the patrons, their seating/serving capacity and the kitchen's ability to serve perfect dishes. The decor and ambience is well thought out and makes for a comfortable dining experience. Conversation can be carried out at a normal level with hardly any background noise. More places should follow this pattern rather than a rush to pack as many in as possible and lose future business as a result. A 10/10 experience. Can't imagine anyone would be disappointed. This is a new place here on Oak Island and there are now THREE top restaurants on the Island! Salt 64 has a GREAT menu with top notch food - from the surf to the turf and everything in between! The staff is outstanding as well! And save room for dessert! Too many to choose from. WARNING! The 7 layer chocolate cake is HUGE! One thing Salt 64 has on it's two biggest competitors is they have a reservations link on their website. You can make reservations anytime day or night and not have to wait until someone is there to answer the phone - 3 or 4 o'clock til close. 5 stars doesn't do Salt 64 justice! read more

Very over priced for what I ordered which was the fried oysters with fries. The hush puppy's to me were some what raw in the middle or extremely moist. The condiments that came with my order were a tarter sauce that tasted like mayonnaise with a few bits of pickles and a cocktail sauce that had texture but very little horseradish in it so it had no bite. The food was just ok. Crab cakes were served room temp. The "truffle" fries were undercooked and didn't have any truffles on them. The service however was excellent. The waitress was wonderful. The manager was working the room as much as anyone else, even setting and clearing tables. The ambiance was more like a bar than a fine dining experience. It was very loud and difficult to carry on a conversation. One star review bumped up to two stars because of the waitress. read more

It was cozy and elegant but for someone with hearing loss, the table conversation was barely audible over the music and other table chatter. Not favorable conditions for one with a hearing loss. But if you are looking for an upscale vibe after day out on the beach or the water this is a candidate (of 2) on the island. Toast appetizer was excellent, a must! The crab cakes where a slight "fishy". Next time will try something else. The rest of my party and neighboring tables loved their food selections. read more
