What is amazing service is great the venue is very chill very laid-back for a great night for dinner and drinks.

Eating at Salt has been the best dinning experience we've had in the Valley, and one of the best ever! This restaurant is up there with many restaurants we've tried in Austin, NYC, LA, and other cities. Same owners as House Wine, which is also a great restaurant. Not only was the food delicious, we greatly enjoyed the staff, especially Carlos and Angie in the kitchen area, and Priscilla, our server. They were attentive and took time to explain different dishes, given we sat at the chefs table. We got to sample several dishes, including the ravioli and rabbit. Great service without being snobbish. I had the pork chop and my wife had the fried chicken with jalapeño mashed potatoes. And we ordered a side of their decadent Mac and cheese. Everything was rich and flavorful, without being overdone. The pork chop was out of this world!!! The drinks were also very tasty, especially the Paloma. The wine list is designed for all budgets. Highly recommend seating at the chefs table. It is a unique experience and you get to sample a variety of dishes as they are prepared in front of you. We enjoyed this experience better than many of fancy and overpriced restaurants in Las Vegas. Thank you Salt for a great dinning experience. Can't wait to do it all over again. read more

So many good things to say about this place. In no particular order: 1) Great service - very friendly, attentive yet informal. 2) Atmosphere was very cool. I was on my own so sat at the bar (not the chef's bar where you can watch the food being preped but the bar bar). 3) I had the rib eye which I asked to be cooked Pittsburgh rare - delivered to me perfectly. I also ordered the creme brulee with pecans; like crack cocaine - I deliberately didn't finish it in case I formed an addiction! 4) Really good and varied wine selection too at reasonable by-the-glass prices. The food was pretty good for the most part. I ordered the duck, and had soup as an appetizer, which was served a little bit cold. The service was good, although the waiter seemed somewhat inexperienced. But the effort was there. I ate outside on the patio, so I cannot speak to the atmosphere of the restaurant. read more

What a great spot near downtown the downtown arts district area! As a group we got to try a good variety of the menu items and overall this place is worth you stopping by! Some favorites were the shrimp appetizer, the port dumplings that were the most flavorful dumplings I have every had, and the scallops were like butter and cooked to perfection! Some other recommendations would be the Mac and cheese, and the ribeye! The service staff was very knowledgable and friendly. The open kitchen concept is always something I am a fan of, and we noticed the head chef/owner was really on point at the pass. Great place, recommended. read more

My husband and I decided to try Salt after eating at their other restaurant House Wine. This place was absolutely amazing. I love the concept and we were very pleased with everything we ate. I LOVED the quail knots, I didn't want it to end. By far one of the best things I have ever eaten. I really enjoyed the squid ink pasta, I'd only say that a big spoon should be included with this to twirl the macaroni (I'm Italian, it's a must have). My husband loved his fish tacos and my pasta. Call ahead and reserve a kitchen-view bar seat. Talk to the owner if he is there. I'm a teacher, and my wife is a stay at home mom. We don't go out to nice restaurants often. This was my first visit to Salt. I was treating some locals to dinner and this was the restaurant they chose. It was fantastic! Happy Hour drink prices until 7pm (even on the patio, which was great). The meals were all fantastic; two of us had the fried chicken, which was outstanding. I understand the shrimp tacos and the ravioli were also excellent. The shareable Mac and Cheese was delicious as well. Best of all though was the service. Our server, Levi, was super professional and attentive. The manager also checked in on us a couple of times. If the weather is nice I highly recommend the patio. It's a beautiful neighborhood feel out there as well. Overall, a 5-star experience. read more

Yelp comes through again for me in a big way! I needed a good restaurant in McAllen, Texas and was concerned I'd have nothing better then some crappy chain. Yelp let me know about Salt and man am I grateful. Salt would be easy to miss if you weren't looking for it. It's tucked in between several buildings near downtown. The outside is certainly nice enough looking, but is fairly nondescript. The inside is clean and modern, with really nice seating around the kitchen area. Having the opportunity to see your food cooked can be quite entertaining or quite horrifying, depending on the locale... at Salt, it was entertaining. The menu offers a wonderful selection of new American style dishes. I selected the quail knots for the starter, and thoroughly enjoyed them. They are a quail leg/thigh, with the thighs deboned, all deep-fried and placed on a polenta purée... delicious! There were so many entrée options that sounded good, it was difficult to choose. Crispy pork shank, several steak options, rabbit ....it was hard to pick one but I went with the fried chicken as it is supposed to be their signature dish. The chicken is cooked sous vide style, which I have heard of for steaks but never for chicken. However, it worked perfectly. The chicken was cooked thoroughly in the sous vide style then flash fried which resulted in exceptionally moist chicken with the crispy crust. Your order is a complete half chicken, but all the bones are removed so there is no waste. It was exceptional. I could not go without trying the macaroni and cheese, and it too was very good. Service was great.... engaging and friendly without being pests. Costs were not out of line considering the quality of food you get. read more

4.5 stars Salt is great. Likely it's the best restaurant in McAllen. It's fun to eat here and if it is just two of you sit at the chef's table where you can watch the kitchen work. There are several things that I really enjoy, namely the salt chips and the shishito peppers. I could eat those every day. Everything is prepared well. The filet was awesome and cooked perfectly. And they have good wines. There are some down sides, the pork shank and the fried chicken are really overrated. I really wanted to love the fried chicken, but it was just pretty good, not great. The same with the pork shank, it just doesn't have a lot of flavor. To be honest I wouldn't order these dishes again because they don't really deliver. I also think the chocolate dessert needs some work. Overall, I really like Salt, but I would like to see some changes in the menu. Also, it's above my price point except for special occasions, any entree over $30 either needs to be mind blowing or huge, because I'm just not going to pay that. I would recommend a few new entrees in the $25-$30 range. read more

If you come here you have to sit at the Chef's Bar. At first my boyfriend and I were disappointed when we were seated there, as it was a bit noisy, however our opinions soon changed when we were bombarded (in a good way) with delicious samples of their different foods. We got to try their SALT CHIPS, a popular appetizer on their menu. They were crispy and has a very creamy sauce. We tried their Brussel sprouts, their bread, and even some ice cream at the end. All on the house! Not only that but we got to talk to the chefs too, all of them were extremely nice and pleasant. I ended up picking scallops for my main course and WOW! I can say that they were the best scallops I have ever had the pleasure of trying. My boyfriend got ravioli. He was expecting a traditional ravioli so he was a bit surprised to find that it was anything but. He gave his plate a 3/5. My scallops were a solid 5/5. Overall our experience there was great, the chefs were friendly, and the food was PHENOMENAL. Coming back here again soon. read more

We're in McAllen for a long weekend and thought we would try some of the top rated restaurants in town. We started with Salt and we're not impressed. To start, my water was poured into a glass with something black floating in it. I can get past a dirty glass. It happens. We ordered the in house chips, they were the best chips we have ever had.. hands down. We ordered the petite filets with blue crab and asparagus. We chose the jalapeño mashed potatoes as our side, very good. I ordered my steak medium rare and my wife ordered hers medium well. The steaks came out and the medium well steak was more rare than the medium Rare steak We sent it back. I finished my meal and my wife's steak didn't come out for another 20 minutes. Clearly the kitchen didn't think the re-fire was a priority. The food and service was good. Unfortunately the chef/ kitchen didn't seem to be able to execute the meals or the re-fire. The manage did comp the cost of both meals but the evening was ruined. If you're going out for a nice evening, then I would recommend another restaurant. This one doesn't deserve it's #1 ranking. read more

Been coming here the last 4 weeks at times 3-4 a week. Made reservations 4 hrs in advance and showed up to be told they were an hour behind and was asked to sit outside or in my car. We had tons of delicious appetizers and the food was served at a good pace. My steak left something to be desired but I I just grabbed one of their more basic cuts so it wasn't unexpected. My favorite part was definitely their selection of drinks. I had a few different Japanese whiskeys that are hard to get a hold of. My food was spectacular albeit a bit pricey. Disappointed with beer selection in the bar as far as craft beers go. Beer is sold in bottles or cans, just not cool in an upscale restaurant. My biggest complaint was the amount of noise in the restaurant. The acoustics suck in the place, some many people talking at the same time that you couldn't have a conversation at your table. Oh boy! We came in here on a Monday. It got pretty busy once we were sat down. This restaurant is probably by far the best restaurant I've been to here in the valley. I was getting disappointed by the culinary scene here, but Salt changed my mind! It was also a plus that on Monday's they have happy hour going on ALL DAY. So I ordered two drinks. I ordered the prickly pear and lavender cocktail. Both were fantastic!! Probably the best cocktails I ever had! On to the food. For the app we ordered the Sriracha shrimp. It was light and very flavorful. And the portion size was decent. Apparently the chef won a competition with this dish. For the entree we decided to share the akausushi ribeye (I think it was akausushi). We also ordered the mashed potato and Mac n cheese for the side. The ribeye was cooked to a perfect medium rare and it was full of flavor. The meat was tender and I didn't need my A1 sauce ( I eat all my steaks with A1). The mac n cheese was good, but it wasn't the best I ever had, although my hubby really loved it. I forgot what we ordered for dessert, but it wasn't good to me.
