I love this store. IMHO it's the best LFS in the San Antonio area. The store is well kept and clean. Which is very rare compared to the other LFS's in SATX. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and are always willing to help. The best part is the selection of fish and invertebrates. They have both salt and fresh water livestock. I can only speak to FW as I don't keep SW. Huge selection of both common fish and rare fish, shrimp, and snails. All the fish I've purchased have been very healthy. Also have a wide selection of plants. They even sell live food. They aren't the cheapest place in town, but you get what you pay for. Lastly they have a military discount! Sum it up... Always love to visit here. Whenever I need something for my tiny aquarium, this is my go to place. Anything I can't find in Petsmart or Petco, I go here and find it. The staff are good, although last time I was here (just last Sunday 02/28/2022) I waited unusually long, and they are not even busy. Kind of getting impatient and upset already, the guy who helped me out with the snail I'm buying started to chit chat with a couple (the girl was attractive I guess) for almost 20 minutes. Until the other nice lady staff member came in after she helped her customer outand asked me if I'm being helped. I told her that guy was helping me until he chit chat with the girl customer with me waiting impatiently. The lady staff member interrupted their conversation and that's only the time that guy started helping me out again so I could pay and leave. Also, the previous time I was here, a different guy sold a snail for $12, it was usually less than $5, but he saidthat's the actual price. But on this trip, the same snail cost me only $3. This is confusing and quite upsetting as well. I never complained since I thought that was the correct price. I'll just be careful next time and make sure to check the pricing before paying. And next time I will not let it slip away. Will still be visiting this store in the future but will be extra careful when paying. They should be consistent with their pricing since there are barcodes posted on the aquarium. read more

I have bought a total of seven panda corydoras from this store and I only have one of them remaining alive. I just purchased the last four on this past Saturday and by this past Monday all but one of them had died. I keep very pristine aquariums. I do regular water changes and I test the parameters. I even use our RO water that is remineralized to make sure my fish and shrimp are in the best environment possible and I haven't had any other fish die, except the panda cories that I have purchased from this store repeatedly. I called and asked about an exchange or refund or if there's anything that can be done since this is a repeat an issue and I was told that the store doesn't purchase a warranty from the people they purchased the cories from so they wouldn't be able to assist me. The person I spoke to told me that the cories were shipped in on that Friday prior to when I purchased them so they may have still been stressed and that may have caused them to die, what alarms me about this information is that these specific fish they receive automatically go out to be sold and are not quarantined whatsoever to deal with the stress from shipping. They know the stress shipping can cause and sell the fish right after regardless. It's like they choose to sell them asap after shipping to avoid being responsible for the ones that die financially. After they told me this they were just silent on the phone for a few minutes. I was then told that I should have known that I needed to call the same day I purchased to inform them that they were sick or that they had died with photos from those days. No one told me this at checkout and there are no obvious signs I saw with this policy. I explained that I work all week and this has been my first chance to contact them and then the employee said well my coworker purchased them and they're fine in the coworkers tank. At this point I didn't really need a refund but a discount on replacement fish or like even a $10 store credit would've been enough but I was offered nothing and my concerns about the quality of the fish I purchased were not taken seriously. I was not allowed to speak with a manager, and this level of unprofessionalism and lack of customer service is quite frustrating. I have enjoyed going to this store and purchasing healthier plants and fish in comparison to other stores but this repeated issue with the panda cories and then to be disregarded when I called is quite frustrating. I will no longer be purchasing any fish from this store. For reference my parameters are: Ph 6.8 Nitrates 5ppm Nitrite 0 Ammonia 0 In addition here is my tank and the ONE cory I have left out of the $42 I spent. That's one expensive Cory lol. The tank is 20 gallons with sand substrate and yes there's some debris from the plants I took out of my tank with dirt to plant in here a few weeks ago. So no the debris is not poop I just did a water change. This tank is corydoras, a few guppy fry and some shrimp that snuck in with plants. The cories were meant to quarantine here until they move to my 44 gallon planted tank. Now I don't know when I'll be able to get a schooling amount of cories for the survivor so this is pretty upsetting. read more

Be careful coming here and spending your hard earned money. The prices on coral are EXTREME UNFAIR it could be considered a form of theft. Not only that but for generally mid to lower end variations of the corals. I went in here and was bombarded by stickers of prices that seemed to be 10x the fair rates of things. Check your local Facebook markets, online retailers, other reefing shops. Fish selection is nice but multiple dead fish were seen floating in tanks. So much potential for a cool store but the price gouging is out of hand. They must be selling it though to justify it so DO YOUR RESEARCH!! read more

After going to the "big box stores" but getting frustrated with the service and lack of care or especially knowledge from the employees. Wow what a change when coming here. First off it's small size is decieving it really opens up and is packed with some beautifully kept species along with some nice unique ones. The fish all were showing means of great care and great colors. Bought some endlers and 5 diamond tetras and even put in an order for some apistogrammas. The staff was a wealth of knowledge about all of my questions from co2 injections to even queStions about my backyard pond build they knew it all. Can't wait to go back. FYI the stock goes pretty QUICK. Check their website they post fresh and salt water shipments with inventory for both. I just set-up my 135 gal saltwater reef tank. They have been amazing throughout the process. I hired them to move my tank when it came in. They were professional, reasonable prices and did a great job making sure it was in my stand perfectly. Also, I've been starting my fish collection with them. All their saltwater fish are healthy, eating well and medicated in their holding tanks (hence the green water). While it might not be a full quarantine, the fact that they run meds in their tanks shows they care and want your fish to be happy and healthy! Their coral selection isn't half bad either! read more

I've lived here a few months now and I think this is one of the cleanest shops in the area; especially for fish. The selection is awesome and unique. They seem to aggressively treat most fish with copper (and they know which ones not to treat) which is nice to see. You will pay a premium but it's nice to know you're getting healthy fish that eat well. They do keep a small stock of higher end equipment which is great in a pinch; most of the other local stores keep off brand/random equipment in stock. The coral selection isn't great but I have not found a store in the area with great coral so I'm not knocking them for that. read more

I went in and I ordered a Bubble-eye goldfish, they said it would be there next week. I came back in a week and bought the Bubble-eye, a Ryukin and a Black Moor. I was so excited to have a fish store so close to home and was talking to my fiancè about having three huge custom tanks built, but it wasn't long lived. I bring the fish home and within a week they die of illness. I clear out the tank and treat it for a month to insure that the tank is free of illness for my next fish purchase. I went to Elegant Reef and ordered another Bubble-eye. They said it'll be there in a week. I came back in a week and the fish wasn't there. It's understandable that I was forgotten. So I put my name on a list and they said it'll take about a month for the next freshwater order. I wait and come back in a month, the fish isn't there. I put my name on the list again because they said the employee that orders the freshwater fish was having issues outside of work, which is understandable, and bought a Bristlenose. Within the week, my tank is filled with illness again. I treat the tank and I come back about two weeks later and ask when the fish will be ordered, because it still hasn't come in. They said they had already made their order and that they won't make another on until the next month. Long story short, I waited four months for a fish they never intended to order in the first place. I called Elegant Reef today (8/19) and asked if the fish had come in yet. They said that if I had been waiting that long that I should go somewhere else because they don't specialize in goldfish. Well, then why on earth did you KEEP telling me that you were going to order them, IF YOU DON'T SPECIALIZE IN THEM? I waited four months to be told that I wasn't a valued customer. I'm glad that this happened sooner than later, however. I was going to have three custom tanks built, but now who knows if they'd ever even start them? read more

I got a betta for my birthday two months ago from Petco and he died yesterday. My betta was in a 3 gallon tank with a heater and filter so I don't know what went wrong.
