Although it includes ingredients introduced by the Europeans, such as cheese and onions, Salvadoran cuisine still relies heavily on indigenous food, such as beans and corn. If there's one dish that defines Salvadoran food, it's pupusas. From the Nahuatl for "fat tortilla," these thick, handmade corn tortillas are filled with cheese, refried beans, or seasoned meats and then grilled until golden. Topped with curtido (a tangy cabbage slaw) and salsa, they are best eaten for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Located at a strip mall on Passaic Street in Hackensack, Salvadoreño-Santa Fe is a great Salvadorean family-owned/run establishment. Upon arrival as a first-timer, I was greeted by the staff inside this cozy, casual, and clean interior with a handful of tables. The menu features authentic Salvadoran and other Hispanic cuisine. I decided on the Pupusa Loca Grande/Big Pupusa Loca filled with pork, chicken, cheese, and beans. There was a bit of a wait as my meal came out freshly made, perfectly cooked, and authentically tasty. New spot alert! Ordered takeout from here and was pleasantly surprised. Suited for takeout but they have a few tables inside if you wanted to eat in. I ordered a chicken and mushroom with rice, some pupusas and their carne asada tacos. Pickup was easy and the lady chased me down outside to make sure I got the plantains which was left out of the bag. It was super cold out so I appreciated that she came out in her t shirt lol. The food overall was really good, authentic and I think I enjoyed the tacos the most. The chicken and mushroom was tasty and the pupusas were good. I'm not s huge fan of pupusas usually but figured I'd give it a try. Really good food and not breaking the bank for dinner. I'll be back! read more

This was my first experience with Salvadorian food. They had a lot of chicken dishes for lunch but the server mentioned that they arent very spicy so I went with the papusa. I wish the menu had pictures. The papusa were made fresh to order. I got the rice and bean one and the chicken one. 3 will likely fill you up but I got 4. It comes with a pickled cabbage salad and some red sauce. She also hooked me up with some homemade green and red salsa. The rice and beans tasted like a burrito and combined with the salsa was great. The chicken was minced and was also very good. Some guy got a authentic egg breakfast which looked very tasty too. The prices are almost $15 for dish so a little pricey. read more

My friend and I were craving pupusas and since there are a limited amount of places in our area we took a chance with theirs establishment. It had some good reviews and some questionable ones. Let me tell you we had no idea what to expect, but OMG we were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious! The pupusas were better than the other restaurant in the area. Great food. Great taste. Great service. I came on a day that they were pretty busy (lunch time) and had a fantastic lunch. I opted for pupusas but other people nearby had some delicious smelling grilled steak and fish. Smelled delicious and looked great too! The pupusas were definitely the stars of the show. They were really good. (You need to be patient when ordering, they are made fresh and takes atleast 15min - but you won't regret it, they're delicious) I ordered the cheese and frijole and cheese and chicharrones, it was sooooo good. My brother ordered the chorizo (didn't have that much chorizo) and the plain cheese. The chicharrones and yuca dish was good. Wasn't that much meat but it was good. A lovely little casual restaurant right across from Aldi. There are three tables for dining in, or you can do take out. I only came for the pupusas, made fresh on the spot. Can't speak for the food b/c I didn't get any, and it looks like there have not been reviews for a year or so. I might try again if I'm in the neighborhood. I did look at the menu - and the prices seemed a little high to me, but everything has gone up everywhere and if the food was good, they'd have gotten a sale from me and perhaps a repeat customer.
