We ordered the mini tipica (grilled steak, pork rind, rice, beans, fried egg, sweet plantain and avocado, chorizo) and it was fair; the steak was too chewy but everything else was fine. A Concerned Review of Pollos Mario For years, my spouse and I have been loyal customers of Pollos Mario in Hackensack, NJ. We have enjoyed many meals here, from breakfast to lunch and dinner, supporting this establishment through economic ups and downs, a pandemic, and an influx of competition on Main Street. As one of the original Colombian restaurants in Hackensack, we have always hoped for the best for them, but recent experiences have left us concerned. With eight Colombian restaurants now within walking distance, the landscape has changed significantly. Recently, we found ourselves paying $32 for breakfast, which feels exorbitant. Reflecting on our past visits, it's evident that the portion sizes have shrunk considerably since pre-pandemic times. The arepa con queso, which used to cover the plate, now barely touches the edges. Both my spouse and I ordered Huevos Revueltos, priced at $13.90 each, which included scrambled eggs, a homemade potato, and corn cake with cheese. My spouse enjoyed a hot chocolate or coffee with their meal, while I was charged separately for my Aguapanela con Limón, a sugarcane lime drink that, upon receiving the bill, we discovered was not included with the breakfast and added an unexpected $5 charge for a tiny glass. This feels disproportionate for what is essentially a simple beverage. I understand that economic uncertainty is impacting many businesses, and restaurants need to find ways to stay afloat. However, the experience cannot come at the cost of customer satisfaction. It's disheartening that we now visit Pollos Mario only once or twice a month, down from two or three times a week. Had been hearing about this place for a long time from friends who live in the area and decided to give it a shot and picked up some food to go. The chicken is so moist and has an interesting flavor, almost like Indian spices without being Indian. The rice was phenomenal, yellow with peas and carrots. The chicharron came very well done which is exactly how I like mine. Extra crispy. If you prefer more fat or a chewy texture, you may not enjoy this as much as it is not a melt in your mouth feel. It came with a few tiny tubs of their green, super spicy sauce, which was fantastic. Loved it on the chicken and also added to the rice. The only feedback I have is I wish they would have thrown in a piece or two of lime as I love that acid to cut through the richness of fat between the Chicharron and the chicken. This place has horrible service. We work at the courthouse we know this place well. Never have we gone to a place ordered and 45 min later still nothing. We wave for service they waved back. We finally flag down the waitress and ask for the check she gives us a check that is not accurate for what we ordered. It was only for $6.00 we ask why and she said she cancelled our order. We never asked for the order to be cancelled. Not sure where the misunderstanding was but at no time did they care to resolve the misunderstanding nor did they care we were leaving hungry and dissatisfied. They know who we are they know we are regular customers they just didn't value us as clients. We came back to work and kept hearing bad reviews on them one being they are very expensive. I was recommended this spot for a quick lunch. I decided to order the Monday lunch special which came with a soup of the day. I had the sopa de albondigas (meatball soup). It was delicious and very filling alone! This special also came with pollo a la plancha, white rice and veggies. This was absolutely delicious and extremely filling all together for the price! The restaurant is very clean with many seating options considering the size of the place. The service was quick and allowed much privacy while constantly assuring if we were okay. Came here to pick up lunch. The staff was friendly and attentive. They prepared my order pretty quickly. I was excited to try this place but admittedly the chicken was just okay. The rice was good but I just did not get a wow factor. If I never eat this again I would not be upset however if I need lunch and just want to eat something this would do. Ordered the daily lunch special via Uber eats and the food came packaged well, piping hot, and super fresh. The Thursday special was a piece of pollo a las brasa served with yellow rice, fried cassava, and a stew. For close to $9 this meal was a steal. I gotta say this was a little bit disappointing! I ordered online for in store pick up and they were nice enough to call me when I hadn't picked up my order after about an hour of ordering. My skirt steak wasn't bad but it wasn't great. The meat was nice and juicy and of course with their chimmichurra sauce, it was 10x better. The meat itself was a little bit bland but the sauce definitely made up for it. The yellow rice wasn't anything I hadn't had before so it was pretty basic for me. I was very disappointed in the maduros because it was really dry. I like mine to be a little mushy with a nice glaze over it so l was pretty upset that I ordered this over tostones. The chicken my husband got was actually very good and I wish I would've gotten that instead with a side of rice. The chicken was extremely juicy and the skin was perfectly cooked. The most disappointing dish was the empanadas! I'm not sure what kind of shell was used but I didn't like the shell at all. It was overly crunchy and it really didn't do much for me compared to Noches. Glad my husband and I stopped here and I was pleasantly surprised to see how a Main St. storefront entrance made way to a beautifully themed restaurant. Nice ambiance, cute decor and friendly service. I loved that you could see the Columbian influences in the decor. We were greeted as we walked in and the staff we encountered were all really nice. Ice water, lime slices and green hot sauce were brought brought to the table first. The waitress came quickly and we placed our order. The rotisserie chicken was tender and delicious. The plaintains and tostones came out hot and fresh. The yellow rice was cooked perfectly and although not super flavorful the hot sauce was perfect on the rice. I'm sure it would be delicious with beans but we didn't order beans. We also tried two smoothies, the mango was my favorite but the passion fruit was good too but a little tart and not as sweet as the mango. I will return without a doubt for that mango smoothie. I'd also like to stop in for breakfast because the breakfast menu items looked interesting. Good food, great ambiance and great service. The amount of shredded carrot on top of my salad was a little owe the too but it was a perfect amount of lettuce. I placed an order through Grubhub and although it came quickly I am upset at how customer service handled my issue. I ordered a soda and it did not come in the bag. The chicharron was burnt and salty. I explained this to the lady over the phone who said she would speak to the manager. What the hell does that have to do with me and my order? I proceeded to te her that I know how it is made and I also l know it should be edible and not burnt. This chicharron is burnt not fried. I was pissed when I didn't see any fries, only to find a few measly shoe string fries in the sandwich. What a rip! Way too expensive for such poor quality.
