Passing through Auburn, Indiana this Thursday afternoon (enroute to Naperville IL) and stopped for the night (and to get dinner). Our neighbor is cat-sitting for us and suggested Salvatori's as a good place for Italian, and she was so right! It's not a big space and you may have a short wait for a table, but so worth it. The ambiance is casual and family-oriented, not too noisy even when full, and (best of all) there's No TVs. Heavenly! I had the pasta Apuli (minus the red pepper flakes), she had the Spaghetti Olio and we split a bruchetta and a cannoli for a to-go dessert. The portions are so large, we needed to-go boxes for both dinners even though we ordered the half sizes! Generous doesn't begin to describe this place. Our server was warm and attentive without 'hovering' and the host stopped by to ensure all's well. We're coming back through town on Monday and I think we'll be back again! read more

This review is based on two visits, two nearly identical pizzas, and unfortunately, the same issue both times: two pizzas, same floppy crust. About two weeks ago, visiting Auburn for work, I ordered a small Supreme thin-crust pizza from Salvatori's and brought it back to my hotel. The pizza itself was very tasty, but the crust was extremely soft and floppy--so much so that it couldn't support the toppings. When I picked up a slice, the toppings basically slid right off the bottom. The crust had apparently decided its job was simply to provide transportation from the kitchen to the box. The flavor was good, though, so afterward I called the restaurant simply to offer some constructive feedback. I explained that I thought the pizza had been pulled from the oven too early and wasn't fully cooked. The young lady took my feedback in stride and thanked me. This week, I decided to give Salvatori's another try and ordered the exact same pizza: small Supreme, thin crust. But this time I was very specific. I asked for the crust to be very crispy and told them I was perfectly fine with the cheese getting browned. At the end of the call, they confirmed, "So you want it well done?" I said yes. Perfect. We were speaking the same pizza language. I was told it would be ready in 20 minutes. When I arrived, however, the pizza wasn't ready. After waiting a few minutes, one staff member asked another if they had taken the order for the "10-inch carryout pizza"--a.k.a. my pizza--and there seemed to be a little scrambling. The manager came right up and explained that they were "late" getting my pizza in. I said no problem. Things happen. I waited another 15-20 minutes. When the pizza finally came out, I watched an employee hand it over to the woman at the counter. She opened the box, looked at the pizza, paused for a good five seconds, slowly closed the lid, turned around, faced me and said: "Sir, your pizza is ready." That five-second pause should probably have been my warning. To their credit, they were very nice about the delay and gave me a piece of cheesecake at no charge. I had intended to pay for it, but they insisted because of the inconvenience, which I genuinely appreciated. Here's where my pending disappointment became actual disappointment. I opened the box. It looked almost exactly like the pizza from two weeks earlier. Definitely not well done. Definitely not crispy. Once again, the crust was soft and floppy. Apparently, "well done" and I have a different definition than Salvatori's oven does. At that point, the pizza was already cut, I had already waited the extra time, and I really didn't want to hand it back and ask them to put it in the oven for another 10 minutes just to get the crispy crust I had specifically requested. I hate leaving anything less than a five-star review, especially because the pizza actually tastes good and the staff were friendly. But after specifically calling about the issue after my first experience, then giving them another chance and being extremely clear about how I wanted the second pizza cooked, it was disappointing to receive essentially the same result. The missed order and extra wait wouldn't have bothered me much by themselves. Things happen, and the complimentary cheesecake was a thoughtful gesture that I appreciated. But when a customer specifically requests a pizza "well done," the restaurant confirms that request, and the pizza still comes out noticeably underdone, that's harder to overlook. I wanted crispy. I got floppy. Twice. Two pizzas, one review--and unfortunately, the same crust both times. I'm just not sure there will be a third. Clean, open, fast Italian place to my surprise connected to a gas station. Portions of food were huge and service was very fast. I was a party of one so I was in for a drink and dinner rather quick and they delivered. They had a special which was a salad and rigatoni with vodka sauce and chicken that the waiter recommended. It was good, huge portion, and spicy. I took half to go and ate for breakfast. Only criticism were that the house red wine, a chicanti was not good and the waiter touched my bread with their hand when boxing my meal. Like they picked it up with their hand to not get it covered in sauce then picked it back up to out on top of the pasta to close the lid. That I could have done without seeing and needless to say that bread got thrown away. But I'll be back! read more

I stopped here for some dinner to take back to my hotel since it was close to my hotel and I didn't want any fast food. The place is small in a strip mall behind a gas station. The place is small with an Italian decor. The staff greeted me as I walked in and were very friendly. When I mentioned that my hotel didn't have a restaurant the one young grabbed my carry out bag quick before I could just to reopen my bag and put in plastic utensils, how's that for service because she was paying attention to my overall experience even though I travel with utensils. I ordered the lasagna with sliced meat balls, ricotta, mozzarella and the meat sauce that comes with garlic bread. The garlic bread was thin sliced and toasted, very good. The lasagna looked good with a nice portion. The meat sauce was on the sweet side with big chunks of ground beef. The lasagna was cheesy with that ricotta flavor and texture. Overall this was pretty good and really hit the spot for real food vs fast food. read more

​Poor seating management and zero apology While I've had great experiences at other Salvatori's locations, the Auburn branch disappointed us right at the door. We were asked to wait 15 minutes near the restrooms, only to be completely forgotten about while a walk-in couple was seated at the next open table. To make matters worse, when the host finally noticed us, he offered no apology for the mix-up, simply stating he forgot about us and we'd have to wait for the next round of clean tables. On a recent visit to the quaint Indiana town of Auburn for some work, I found Salvatori's. My waitress was Cammie and she was very pleasant and accommodating. The restaurant is relatively small, and looks locally owned, and it isn't a luxury establishment. But if you are looking for a nice dinner of typical Italian food at affordable prices, I think this is a good choice and you'll enjoy it. Wow! We are staying at the Hampton Inn Auburn for my husband's work trip. Salvatori's is within walking distance. Salvatori's is perfection! The ambiance is amazing. It is a small place with Italian themed decor that gives a very Italian home cozy vibe. All the staff is so friendly. Just top notch. The food is absolutely amazing! A local man saw we were new and offered great suggestions but you can't go wrong here. Warning - if you get a pasta dish, they are HUGE and you WILL want to finish the whole thing because their food is just that good. You can get "half" and it is enough for one person and left overs. If you pay just a little more for a "full" size, you can have lunch the next day, too. The best part of this place for me, though, is that I have to be gluten free and their gluten free pasta is the best I have ever had. My husband wanted me to be able to share his dish and so he went with gluten free pasta, too. He typically hates gluten free anything. He loved it. It was cooked to perfection. I add this because gluten free people usually stay away from pasta restaurants. You can definitely go here! Many of their dishes, including pizza, have a gluten free option. Where do I start? 3pm on a Saturday afternoon & pretty much an empty restaurant. We were seated towards the back which was odd since the only other table occupied was near the front door, family of 6. The server was super nice. We ordered garlic cheese bread for an app, it came quickly and directly out of the oven. Super hot and very good. I ordered a sausage roll with mushrooms which came out burned with fully uncooked dough throughout. Hello cook....your oven is too hot! Dipstick. The outside dough was glistening in so much oil I had to pat it dry to remove the excess. No bueno!!! I picked through the minimal sausage & mushrooms - while it tasted good, it was NOT worth the $14 price tag!!! Where's the damned sausage????? I'll drive from Angola to Fort Wayne to Lexy's Pizza next time! They don't overcharge & load 'em up as it should be. Hubby's large piece of Lasagna was perfectly presented & was super saucy. It tasted great. Huge let down on the sausage roll which I never sent back, and left for them to see their shitshow coming out of the kitchen on a Saturday afternoon. With a final bill with tip it was $56 and a vow to remember not to go back. Come on Salvatori's - you're better than this! Even the small New Haven location outshines this one. read more

Only one star cause they started shrinking up the orders tiny shrimp not huge like the past, plus leaving out parts of the order they know people won't return to correct the order. So there making money from this your really going down hill, wish I could take back the tip. read more

I got a 10" cheese and mushroom pizza which tasted good but the crust was definitely undercooked and a little doughy. Not sure if they pulled it too quickly or need to turn the heat up in the oven? Plesantly surprised by this Italian restaurant in Auburn Indiana. We stopped here after having no luck at some of the other local establishments. I'm glad we did! Though the location puts you in the mind of a franchise chain restaurant, the food, feel, and familial atmosphere certainly uphold the rich traditions of this restaurant. The service was top notch! Ashley, our server, was knowledgeable of all the dishes, patient with us as we tried to create our own dish because we have so many dietary restrictions, and she made the experience very personal. They have a small but effective selection of beer and wine. We had the moscato and it was so good we had to get another glass. Who ever thought you could get Authentic Italian wine in the middle of Indiana!?! The food was delicious! They have GLUTEN-FREE options and plenty of variations for non-meat eaters. I had the gluten-free penne with their signature red sauce. Tasted very authentic and it was hearty. I originally got the blackened salmon with it but it was undercooked (in my opinion) so I sent it back. Without even asking, Ashley recommended the shrimp as a replacement. She was right. The shrimp was perfect! I also had the gluten-free crust cheese pizza with black olives and Mancini peppers. So tasty! Overall, I enjoyed this quaint establishment. We realized the next day this restaurant has multiple locations. Which in my opinion, demonstrates they are doing something right. The only reason they are getting 4 stars instead of 5 was the restaurant dining room and location. It was in need of a bit more space and I nicer spot. The dining experience should match the dining room. I'd love to see them open up somewhere they have their own parking lot entrance and not tucked between other businesses. I had a craving for pizza this evening and it just happens that Salvatori's is just up the road from my hotel. I hopped on their website, placed an order for a 10" pepperoni & sausage pizza and waited a few minutes before I headed there to pick it up. Salvatori's is at the end of a building that houses a gas station at the opposite end. The are a couple of other businesses in between. I parked and walked in. I was immediately greeted and asked if I wanted to sit or place a carryout order. I said I was there to pick a pizza up and it wasn't a minute before they came back from the kitchen, pizza in hand. I hopped back in the van and came back to the hotel. When I opened the box, I thought they had made a mistake but I quickly realized there was fresh parsley sprinkled over the top. I've seen and had fresh basil sprinkled over the top of pizzas, but never parsley. I didn't mind it, it was just surprising. The pizza was layered with sauce, sausage, cheese, and pepperoni on top. The sausage was thinly minced so when it was spread over the sauce, you were guaranteed a bite of sausage with every bite. A plus for me! The cheese had a nice pull, and the pepperoni was spicy with crispy edges. The pizza was almost perfectly round which says to me that the dough is pre-shaped and ready to go when they receive an order. There isn't anything wrong with that, but I would expect a hand tossed pizza from a place that had authentic and Italian in the name. Just my thoughts. Anyway, when I picked up the first slice, I was a bit disappointed becasue the bottom of the slice was very moist. Soggy really. I don't mind and soft bottom to a pizza slice, but soggy... meh. The pizza did taste good and I had a few pieces to satisfy my hunger and left the rest in the box for maybe lunch tomorrow. Overall, I give Salvatori's a solid 4-stars. They have other American-Italian dishes which I am sure are very good. I'll have to give a try the next time I up in Auburn for work. Passed through while staying at a nearby hotel for a concert and was way more impressed than I thought I'd be. I went during the mid-afternoon, and they weren't busy until the tail end of my visit. So I can't attest to the service, atmosphere and so forth when the place is full. But my experience was terrific. Very very friendly, outstanding server named Kylie. Everything was super clean. The place looks upscale without actually being upscale. And the food. Wow. I mean, really really good, and not too much more expensive than I thought it should be. I ordered what's called a three meat cuscino for an appetizer. It's a big meatball, Italian ground sausage, pepperoni, marinara, and mozzarella baked together inside homemade dough, served with a side of marinara sauce. It was great and so filling it made it difficult to finish the meal (and indeed I couldn't come close). I got a HALF order of spaghetti and meatballs, it was huge, and I finished just over half of it. And I'm a big boy who can eat. It was good food. I tipped heavy, and everything came to around $40. In retrospect I didn't need the appetizer, but I was by myself. If I was with a second person and was sharing, the amount of food probably would have been just right. I don't get to NE Indiana very often, but if I do, I would make a point of stopping here again. read more

Awesome food. Cold crisp salad with plenty of tomatoes and onions and a good blend of lettuce types. Lasagna is comparable to Casa's in Fort Wayne (which is my fav). Lasagna was tasty and just the right portion. Servers are friendly and food delivered hot and in a timely manner for a baked product. Wish I could have ordered one or two breadsticks separately but they only allow 6 and 8. The lunch price of this meal is incredible at $9.99. I highly recommend. This was the auburn Indiana location. Located in a small shopping strip, we sought this restaurant out since it was owned by the same family that runs the New Haven one From what I can tell, it is the same menu. That's fine with me. I had the linguini with red clam sauce. The Mrs. had the Italian Garden salad. We shared. The portion sizes are huge. I got the lunch portion and had plenty to eat. I was a little disappointed in the clam sauce. I could not detect much clam or flavor if it. I would pay a few bucks more for more clams. You know what I think is strange? The fact that there is no bread. I guess that's not exactly true since they do serve a tiny sliver of garlic toast. However if you want something to soak up every bit of that supper yummy sauce, be prepared to pay extra for it. Worth going back to. I am sure we will. read more

Great manager that recommends the best foods! Calzones, pizza and pastas are ALL very very good! A tad disappointed in the huge price increases. Especially for spaghetti with marinara sauce & one meatball. How much money is involved in boiling spaghetti, adding a cup of marinara and one meatball. ?? Certainly not $14.95. Calzones are really tasty but fillings are quite light. Breadsticks are very expensive for flat barely chewable dough. Our food was delicious and served piping hot. I had the spinach ravioli and my friend had the lasagna. We had the small portions. Mine was plenty but I would order the large lasagna, the small was that. We had the bruschetta appetizer which was also good. My friend had a beer and I had the red Stella Rosa. So why the 4...if there's one thing an Italian meal needs is good bread and plenty to mop up the sauce. The bread was not worthy of the main course. Almost like a long cracker...awful. Also the wait staff stood around talking, laughing while 2 girls did all the work. Very unprofessional. Would I go back... yes.
