I enjoyed Supper Club at Sam A.M. so much that I'd say it was one of my favorite Jersey City dinners in the last few months. First off, at $32 this is a phenomenal value in terms of the amount of food you get: Starters (served family style): Mac and Cheese (ginormous portion) Pickled vegetables Cornbread Main: Catfish filet with a side of collard greens and mashed sweet potatoes Dessert: Coffee Pineapple upside-down cake Drank: BYOB, no corkage fee Quantity did not trump quality here either; the cat fish and collard greens were great, I loved the mac and cheese, the corn bread....... in fact everything was pretty awesome. I think my favorite dish was the mac and cheese which included 5 types of cheese and just a touch of truffle oil which added to the dish without overpowering the other elements. I'd say the least successful dish was dessert, but I'm not really a dessert person. Also worth mentioning was that the service was very warm and friendly; definitely a little less hectic than the usual weekend brunch scene. I loved the execution of the supper club in terms of food and service, but more than that, I loved the spirit of the supper club...... relaxed and gluttonous! I have been going to this neighborhood spot on and off for years. This is the first time I have reviewed it. Their Atlantic sandwich was a long time staple which I used to carry out at least once a week. The space to eat in is small but nice. The waitstaff are friendly. Their seasonal menus really takes advantage if fresh fruit and veggies. If you find yourself in Paulus Hook and want a good breakfast or lunch definitely stop in. They also have good donuts and pastries for a quick bite. read more

BEST BREAKFAST/BRUNCH SPOT IN JERSEY CITY! It was our second time eating at Sam A.m this past Saturday morning. We arrived around 11, there was a 20 min wait for two but based on our prior experience.. we waited. It is worth it! I had the French toast with berry compote which was DELICIOUS, serving could have been larger as I left decently full but wanting more. I am also a tiny, petite woman so this portion would definitely not fill someone who can/does eat more. My boyfriend loved the blt with an egg. Perfectly cooked and delicious. The berry limeade drink is sooooo dam good also, as is the fresh OJ. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Nice little breakfast and sandwich joint hidden in a residential block in Paulus Hook. It's right next to our apartment so had to check it out. We ordered chicken & waffles and the French toast w/ apples. The former isn't your typical fried chicken with a waffle, instead it's more a cream of chicken served over a waffle instead of rice. It had good flavor, but an odd combination. I'm not into mushy waffles, which you're definitely gonna find smothered under all that sauce. The French toast was legit, two healthy thick slabs of challah lightly battered with custard. It's pretty dense, and I think the caramelized apple topping is a must - not just because it pairs well, but without it you'll feel like something is missing. It costs an extra $4 though, so a bit of a splurge. Overall, we really like this place and will go back. They do daily specials, and the ones we saw today looked pretty good. The menu is small but carries a decent selection for people with all kinds of palettes ( vegetarians, meat eaters, sweet tooth). Both meals we ordered were excellent. The grilled cheese with creamed spinach sandwich was a surprisingly good and hearty combo that came with a side of the coleslaw. I especially loved that the bread wasn't soaked with oil like some grilled cheese sandwiches. My roommate ordered the french toast drizzled with berries and syrup and had absolutely no complaints about it! The area is really small so I wouldn't go with a big group. Going with a party of two at 10 am on a Saturday, I would say I probably got lucky with only having to wait 10 minutes to be seated. Service was friendly and efficient. Constantly busy, finally got a chance to stop in this Pat weekend. Super cute with indoor and outdoor seating. The food was very good, with lots a delicious meals, although not a ton of vegetarian/vegan options (although you can always ask for most dishes without meat). I used to live a block away from SAM and my wife and I miss this place a great deal. Really got a sense of family and belonging when you went to eat here. You are never rushed, the food is UNREAL, and the atmosphere is unlike any other place you have been. Hands down our favorite spot in all of Jersey City. If it was closer we would probably be there everyday. It's laid back and consistently delicious. Ermagawd! This was worth the wait. On my last day in New Jersey my friend and I went for brunch at Sam am. Craving avocado toast and a vanilla latte, but the offering were so much more than that. First off, its BUSY. The line up is out the door and the folks working there maneuver in the smallest space without that effecting the service. After a short wait we were seated, and we perused the delightful menu. I ordered a grapefruit juice and a vanilla latte which were both delicious. I knew I wanted avo toast and when my friend pointed out we could add smoked salmon - decision made. This was so filling, I wanted to finish it so much! All the ingredients were fresh and flavourful. Discovered this hidden gem on a random Wednesday afternoon! My friend was visiting Jersey City from Manhattan and we decided to grab some brunch in the area. The first thing that popped up on my Yelp page was, Sam A.M! How have I never been to this place before?! I literally live a 4 min walk away. It's a cute little cafe that serves some delicious coffee and food. I ordered the avocado toast that came on 2 slices of sourdough bread with avocado and 2 sunny side up eggs. It had red pepper flakes on top of it which added a nice little kick. My friend ordered the weekender which included turkey bacon, eggs and potatoes. Both of us enjoyed our food a lot! The customer service was excellent as well. Our water was refilled continuously without having to ask. Our waiter was very helpful and super nice. After you pay for your meal, they email you a coupon for $5 off your next visit! How awesome is that. Great find and definitely using that coupon because I am going back for sure! read more

We've been coming here for about 4 years and cannot say better things about this Jersey City gem. Every member of the staff is so welcoming and nice it makes you want to come back just to see them! The menu changes based on seasonality and I've never had a bad meal. There are about 3-4 specials on the weekend and they never disappoint. Don't be intimidated by the line. Pretty good brunch spot - but be prepared for a wait as the space isn't too big. A friend said I'd be able to get in and out pretty quickly, and this is true - after the initial wait. Thankfully you can use the yelp waitlist and then it's about 10-15 minutes after that. But because of this there can be a little bit of a jam at the front since this is also where people put in to-go orders. I ordered the Weekender, which consists of the breakfast classics: eggs, bacon, toast, and home fries. I also ordered coffee, and the first cup was only half full in an 8oz mug and I almost walked out. Just kidding, but c'mon, people order coffee because they need a full cup. Thankfully when it was refilled (by a different person) it was to the top. One other thing I noticed (because I was sitting by the menu) was that coffee on the sit down menu was $3.50 but only $2.50/$3 on the board menu. Not sure why that is. My first experience with this place was in December 2022 when I visited my daughter. She claimed they had biscuits and gravy just like home! Sam a.m. did not disappoint! The breakfast was great!!! Loved the vibe of Francis and staff who truly make you feel welcomed! Fast forward to June 2023 and I'm back in town to visit my daughter and I tell her that's where I want breakfast on Father's Day! Francis was there and the music was going and they were busy and he still remembered me from the first visit six months earlier! My daughter had to work the Tuesday after and so I went back for breakfast with her boyfriend. Mood was a little more laid back and not as busy. Food was great again and the staff is very attentive and courteous! I will continue to make this one of my regular stops in future when visiting!!! read more

Went to Jersey City to have brunch and came across this spot. I actually saw additional friends on Facebook went here and posted pics, so that caught my attention to want to try this spot out. Went on a Sunday around noon, and only a 5 to 10 minute wait to be seated. Ordered the macchiato anf cappuccino for drinks, as I wanted to try something different besides coffee. The drinks were good. For my meal, I had the Classic French Toast with local peaches. The pictures I saw online of this item looked delicious and that's why I ordered it. And it did not disappoint. The peaches combo on the French toast was a delightful mix. My girlfriend ordered the avocado toast and eggs, in which I tried some and that was great tasting and well. I found this spot on Yelp while looking for a brunch place to go to with my cousin and my 2 year old and the reviews were promising. However, the experience fell very short of what I expected it to be based on the other patrons' experiences. When I got there, the parking was a challenge beings it's on street parking in the downtown area- and that's to be expected. The next was the wait, it wasn't terrible however they don't have the most organized method of collecting names for the wait and keeping track of which party is next. The final and most important part of the experience was table service- our server didn't seem like a server, but maybe someone on management whom stepped in to help with the rush. He was cold, unwelcoming and he never left us his name. Next, he had absolutely no enthusiasm or the slightest inclination that he wanted to be our server or rather be at work. He made our experience feel weird and like we did something wrong. Also, my toddler dropped water and he looked at the spill, walked away and never addressed it. Another gentleman who was taking names had to intervene and cleaned it up. The food was average, they run out of things quickly and the lattes were regular despite asking for the Nutella. I came for a birthday brunch with the fam. We ordered the peaches and waffles, avocado toast and veggies with sunny side up eggs. My family kept sharing their breakfast which were OK. The avocado toast is the usual as was the other shared plate. Then I had my plates. Oh peaches! The peaches were fine, fine, fine! Like they weren't sweet nor dry it was just FINE! And I am not sure what cream it was on top but it paired well. The waffles were ok but good enough that you didn't need a fork or knife, they were hard (not complaining though) so I grabbed them and ate em like a cracker. I came here on a Sunday around 1:00PM, and there were about 10 people waiting outside. There are a couple other brunch spots available in the area, even a couple down the street, but there's a reason that folks are always waiting! This location is adorable, and isn't very large on the inside(which adds to the wait time) but is great for smaller groups! I waited around 15 minutes for a table for two. It's a little disappointing that nothing is included with brunch. They do not have a liquor license and do not have brunch drinks, but coffee, tea and juice is also not included. I ordered the special that had brisket and grits and it was DELICIOUS! The potatoes that came with it were also seasoned and cooked to perfection. My boyfriend ordered the avocado toast, and was clearly still hungry after - and we both could not finish my plate. All in all, this place is great and worth the short wait. Came for the brunch, stayed for the delicious lattes. The space is very small, so if you've got a large group or are super hungry, be prepared to wait, or bring a snack with you. I decided to be a hipster millennial and try the avocado toast, since that's not really a thing in Boston. It comes on sourdough bread, with a side of two sunny-side-up eggs. I liked that everything, including the eggs, came with seasoning. The toast was nicely buttered and chewy, and the avocado came with red pepper flakes, which added just a bit of heat to every bite. I tried some of my husband's omelette (he asked and they were able to accommodate his order without bacon), and it was really tasty - I liked the cheese they melted on top. Our server was very friendly and attentive, and was nice enough to check with the kitchen when we wanted to swap out items on the menu. The best part of our meal, though, were the lattes. The name Sam A.M. makes me think of Green Eggs and Ham. I don't know if it's just me? At any rate, you can get non-green eggs and ham at Sam A.M, a cafe tucked away in a beautiful residential Jersey City neighborhood. The website informs me that it's called Paulus Hook. So now I know (I'm basically clueless about Jersey). My friend, her young son, and I had to wait a bit to be seated but nothing too long. It's a small appealing space that was maxed out at capacity. Our server was very sunny, kept a regular eye on us, and was great with my friend's son. The menu sports a southern slant, as it features items such as a pimento cheese sandwich, a BBQ sandwich, chicken and waffles, and biscuits and gravy. After several moments of indecision, I selected the grits special ($12 for this particular one) which consisted of short ribs, a sunnyside up egg, and cheesy grits. The grits bowl wasn't bad, though I thought the overall flavor could have been a bit stronger as it was slightly underwhelming. Nothing a little salt couldn't remedy. If I lived in the area, I'd return to Sam A.M. to sample some of the other offerings since besides the grits special, the fall scramble was also calling my name. read more

Came here for brunch expecting a lot more. I was expecting really solid coffee, but this place has a lot left to be desired. I ordered 3 Cold Brews (75% ice in the first 2 Cold Brews) it was watery like the type of "iced coffee" you'd get at a diner. I was under the impression it was free refills, I mean the first two Cold Brews were about 5 sips each. I was done with my first Cold Brew in 30 seconds if that. It was watery, so I just gulped away. The food was fine, I would not return for coffee, it was insulting knowing I just blew $15 on what seemed to be hot coffee poured over ice. I usually purchase Stumptown or Greggory's, so I definitely value beans for what they are. Food wise, I ordered eggs with bacon, potatoes and toast. The toast was hearty, the eggs were good as was the bacon, but the potatoes were tiny and tasted a bit sour. I don't think they have air conditioning inside, so either the milk from the coffee or the potatoes was bad because I have stabbing stomach pains, eh. But, the coffee was the real disappointment here. Diner coffee is better. Our coffee cost more than our meal and as stated, ALL ice and cold brew was light in color- it can't be anything more than hot coffee poured over ice. $15 for coffee is laughable. Sam a.m is one of my favorite brunch spots in the Paulus Hook area. Over the years, this place has gained some incredible traction and it wouldn't be surprising if you'd have to wait for more than 30 minutes to get a table for two on a weekend. Amongst the positives, I'd like to call out the fact that this place manages to hold it's own "small business" feel amongst the many swanky joints coming up in Grove Street area. I've tried out the "Pimento", "First Date" and the "OMELET DU JOUR" and all of them have been absolutely fantastic. Their mocha is supreme while maintaining the exquisite taste of chocolate without compromising on the expresso. A huge shout-out to the freshly squeezed "OJ" which surely hits the ball out of the park. Amongst the disappointments, I've observed the staff to be rather lax with respect to seating. While the whole practice of writing people's names on the door before giving them seating is cute and very much adds up to the small business charm of this place, it also makes the process painfully inefficient. On one such occasion, there was a slip-up where our names went unnoticed and we'd waited for more than 40 minutes to get a table in spite of being the first ones to arrive. It doesn't help that there are only as many seats at this place. Would have given a 5 if not for the sole disappointment but I'm hoping to have a chance to update this review :) read more

The past few years I haven't really enjoyed eggs and occasionally try them to see if I can "like" them again. I really dislike when eggs are overcooked and most places seem to cook it that way!! So I decided to take a chance and try the special which was an omelet with brussel sprouts, thick cut bacon and cheddar cheese. The dish included roasted potatoes and toasted marbled rye bread. The egg and potatoes were cooked perfectly. The omelet was fluffy! I got the perfect amount of egg, brussel sprout, bacon and cheese in 1 bite. I also had a cappuccino but wasn't too crazy about it.
