I'm here to sing the praises of Sam's Barber Shop at 5871 University Avneue inside University Square Mall, practically next door to Marshalls. The backstory: At the third visit at Great Super Sports Tender Chicken Clips, my stylist told me that what I needed was a barber, not in so many words. But Karen did tell me that what I was looking for could only be found at a barbershop. And that's where I met Lin, the barber who cuts my hair today. And Holy Hair Loss is she the best thing to come into my life, since wrapped candy. She has been pretty much spot-on in giving me the haircut I've been seeking for who knows how long but that no one else seemed to master. The place is a little uninspired from the outside, but inside is where the magic happens. Also, this place is DEFINITELY family-oriented. In fact, I think I stepped in a pile of hormones on my first visit. Their rates are reasonable to the point of criminal. And there's a good vibe - to borrow from the current lingua franca - to the place that you don't see at many businesses. I've been there twice and both times, they were packed. The lady cutting my hair actually pushed my hairline so far back I now have to shave my head. Any man who prefers a PROPER FADE knows it's difficult to find someone these days who can actually do a fade correctly. Even though it's a common haircut, so many stylists can't get it right. After discovering Sam, Barber Shop, I have not went anywhere else for my faves, they're always busy but efficient with the time. They don't rush you and yet the wait times are very reasonable. I went on Wednesday to get my haircut at Sam's. It was near their closing hours but they gladly accepted me to come in to get my cut. I've been going here for a year, and never been disappointed. They are usually staffed much so my wait is not long, though they do accept appointments by specific staff--barber/salon specialist. My cut Wednesday was by Lena who did not hurry even though they were soon to close. She was detailed and made sure I was satisfied. I said hi to the owner who has cut my hair before too, and she is always welcoming. I had my cut in June by Nora, who was just like Lena. I have been getting great haircuts here for 17 years. Right before Christmas I waited 15 minutes for the next available stylist. I thought great, I'm next. Another client came in after me and seated himself. The manager at the first station (Sam's son) took me for a fool and promptly took this customer who had hardly waited at all in front of me and they both laughed. I will never get another haircut here again! Sorry Sam you're a nice lady but your manager is rude and shady. Apparently his friends come before your longtime clients. read more
