Great guys with good sense of humor, knowledge in everyday things so you can always talk to them about anything. Went to Danny for my 2 year old's haircut. I think we waited for over an hour because everyone was waiting for Danny's magical hands. It was hot and I didn't think to bring my son water. THIS PLACE IS TERRIBLE!!! I went into this barber shop expecting to spend about 20 minutes. due to the fact that I have a receding hairline My normal haircut is just to go bald and a little fade on my beard. Well this bozo of an 80 year old man not only wasted my time but Robbed me blind. After he finished the haircut & beard he started to massage my head and started giving me facials like a day spa. Keep in mind I DID NOT ASK FOR THIS SERVICE. So after spending about 1 hour and a half there he finishes and not only is my beard not faded in but he proceeds to charge me $75 for this massage service that I did not want, need or ask for. That was the last $75 to my name and I had to fork it over to this pervert old man barber. It's ridiculous absurd & pointless to life. I could have done the job in my own home and saved my last $75. I've been to probably 20 different barber shops in San Diego, and this is hands down the best one. It's cash only, so bring some. If you forget, they'll let you run across the street to the CVS to use the ATM, and don't act all weird about it like some places. I've had my haircut by Sam, Ling and Manny, and all are very skilled at giving a good cut, and to your specifications. Everything is old school here... Sam has owned this barber shop for decades. If you get him talking, he'll tell stories about the old days, like before Qualcomm Stadium was even built. I've recently started getting my beard trimmed and lined-up here. Like everyone's said, the adjustable chairs and hot towel shave w/ a straight razor are awesome, and are like a man's version of being pampered at a spa. As far as the actual shop goes, it's very clean and well kept. The decor has aluminum signs and posters from the 50s and such, and they always play oldies music. The chairs are flanked on one side by the mirror, and the opposite wall is adorned with a couple hundred before- and after-photos of people's haircuts. I think they usually open at around 9 AM, a bit earlier on weekends due to all the military guys coming in. They're also open 7 days a week. read more

All three times I got what I wanted and had good conversations while I got cut. Personally I haven't been here when it's busy, but this area does have a lot of military personnel (and the decor inside let's you know that's a big customer base) so Sundays seem to be hectic. The place has not really changed to much in over 30 years. The staff is friendly, especially Sam who used to own this place. He almost knows everybody by name. It is strictly cash. My husband has been going to this particular location for years and has never had a bad experience, so when it came down to getting our sons haircut this location was an obvious choice. Unfortunately since management has changed, there has been a drastic change in the way they treat their customers and the atmosphere of the shop. I decided to come here because my husband decided to use their services once since the barbershop he usually frequents closed. It's the barbershop next to Crunch that he goes to frequently. We've taken my son there who was 10 months old at the time for a cut and he did really well. Since my husband decided that Serra Mesa Barbershop did really well on his cut he asked if they could cut our son's hair and the guy said yeah, we should be able to. So when my husband left for training and our 1 year old needed a cut I decided that we should get a cut from Serra Mesa Barbershop. When we walked in another kid was getting a cut, and although he cried a little, overall he seemed fine. Well we sat there for awhile and no one said anything to us. No one acknowledged that my son needed a cut when they had an open barber. He just kept looking at us and didn't say a word. I thought maybe he was on break. The other barbers noticed and told him "hey I think that kid is here for a cut" and they looked at us. NO ONE ASKED. Are you kidding me!?! So the guy just looks at us funny and didn't say a word. So we sat there awkwardly for another three minutes and I just thought to myself "there is no reason to sit here and waste my time and get treated like a second rate customer, all I need is a haircut for my son". But I guess that's too much for them to even ask and acknowledge their customers. I went back to the other barbershop who cut my sons hair the first time and a lady did his cut this time. They charge you full price for a haircut and beard trim. Almost 40 bucks!? Crazy. I will not be back here ever again. And they don't accept card so you gotta go to an atm. My barber also went rogue on my beard and cut it way too close took everything from under my chin and obviously I didn't have it like that before idk what was going on in his head. Great shop, probably the best I've been to in 19 years. I'm active duty military and they cut my hair to regulation every time and don't rush the haircut like they do on base. Haircut takes a good 20-30 mins and it shows as you hair is perfect when you leave. I've used Manny, Chad and Ling, all are great! 5 stars all the way! Update (May 2014): Still great service and great cuts. They are getting busier then they use to so plan for a small wait if you go during peak times during weekdays or anytime on weekends. read more

He really should consider retiring. When I finally got into the chair I had to repeat what I wanted on several occasions. Had no clue what "cutting in a hard part" was and suggested he used clippers to cut it in. I opted out of getting my hard part cut. I also repeatedly asked for a fade high up and didn't comply. Ever feel like your being ignored as the barber continues to have a conversation with another person in reception area while cutting my hair, that's how you'll feel I a chair at this place. I've been to Serra Mesa Barber Shop twice now and I have absolutely no complaints. The first time I stopped in, Ling gave me a very good haircut. The second time, Manny was the one to provide an awesome cut. Good haircut, lined my beard up just right, lathered up, straight razor, comfy chair. These folks know what they're doing. I like the atmosphere, nice people, great barbers (I think they've got 5 total barbers). I appreciate that they are open 7 days a week! Most barbers are closed at least one or two days a week... that just so happen to be the days I try to get my hair cut. I don't know how that happens. Wonderful local neighborhood barber shop with antique looking chairs. The barber who cut my hair told me his whole life story very interesting. I have seen them open past their closing time to accommodate customers. The best part of my experience is the hot foam shave. This comes with a regular hair cut, and hot foam and a blade is used to trim your hairline and sideburns. It feels so nice. But make sure you be very specific with the hairstyle you want. read more

I'm not sure what the Yelp love-fest is all about with this place. I went four times and was really only happy with my cut once - the first time. That was done by the new owner, who splits his time between cutting hair and working at a casino somewhere. Twice, I got my hair cut by the old former owner. He's not only very slow, but he's a story repeater. He's an old codger who has some pretty ugly opinions about women and his family and just praddles on about them without much chance to interject. His haircuts are okay unless you get there late and he's tired. Then I think he just sort of reverts to short on the sides, longer on top style. The most recent time will also be the last time. There was an hour wait before I got into the chair and then my cut took an hour. I found out that the guy cutting my hair was still attending barber school, although he didn't tell me that before he started cutting and I paid for a full-price cut. The cut turned out okay, but it took an hour. And waiting is my biggest complaint. There seem to be two types of waiting that are your only options. 1) You come during the middle of the week and there's only one guy working because it's off peak and end up waiting for the one or two full cuts in front of you. 2) You come on a weekend when there are three people working, but the waiting lobby is packed so you end up waiting for seven or eight full cuts in front of you. What's particularly annoying about the wait times is that it seems like the vast majority of these cuts are high-and-tight military style. By design, these cuts are meant to go quickly (that's why the military does them like this). But somehow they take 30-40 minutes! On the plus side, and this is why I gave it two stars instead of one, the barber shop has a great atmosphere. There are interesting posters and model cars as well as an entire wall full of before-and-after pictures. In summary: Decent to poor hair cut quality, really long wait times. read more

I've always gotten fades but Manny, the owner that you see in most pics, and the other barbers have never cut my hair wrong and I'm very particular about my hair. They're al extremely friendly and from what I've seen good with kids. They remember you and how you get your hair done!
