My wife and I ate here for the first time tonight and will definitely be coming back! I've eaten Afghan food before and this food was outstanding. My wife had not had Afghan food before but she loved it. We got to the restaurant about 8pm and it was packed. We were both surprised for a Thursday night, but after eating, we understood why it was so busy. We started with the Sambosas...hands down the best I've had. The texture and flavor was excellent and the chutney added a refreshing kick. For our meals, I had a chicken with tomatoes dish which had so much flavor and was so tender, it almost melted in my mouth. My wife had the lamb shank with seasoned rice. It was falling off the bone tender. We finished with some kheer (rice pudding) which was the best I've ever tasted. Very flavorful and refreshing. Our server was outstanding. She was very helpful with her descriptions and checked back in with us several times to make sure everything was going well. The only disadvantage to eating here was that now I'm hooked but I live 3 hours away with no way to get my next fix! Our family of 7(2 adults and 5 teenagers) was visiting STL and wanted to experience something new. We decided on this place and were pleasantly surprised. Each bite was so full of flavor and each dish was unique. After reading the reviews, I was worried that the food would be so similar to Indian cuisine that we would have a "we could of had that at home" experience but I was very wrong. We ordered combo appetizer for 6, and extra order of hummus and naan and then 4 entrees to eat family style. Butter shrimp, Lamb Beriani, Chicken Masala and Lamb or Qabelli Palau. Honestly, every bite I had I thought was my favorite until I tried the next one. The sweetness of the Lamb Palau was perfect with the mildly spiciness of the other dishes. We were all stuffed with a bit of left overs. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, we got our check and were thrilled with our total! Great authentic Afghani food in St. Louis. We arrived on a Friday afternoon and the place was already quite full of local university students and families. We ordered manti and kabuli pilao, both of which were amazing. The owner is very nice and helpful! When we mentioned that we are from out of town and wanted to grab some coffee, he recommended a great place and then called them to let the owner know that a fellow restaurant owner was sending two guests. I was told its Halal so don't expect any pig products. which means they also don't serve alcohol. But honestly with food this good you don't need a beer. Customer service was great. I think the guy I spoke to was the owner and he was very personable. I got carry out and it was my first time there. I didn't know what to order, so I asked for suggestions. I got the Lamb Qabelli, Muntoo, and Chicken Masala. Everything was so delicious. The meats were very moist and tasty as well. I can't wait to go back. No joke. Oh, he threw in Eggplant appetizer and that was great as well. She had chicken beriani and I had the lamb qabelli--my lamb fell off the bone and rice was delicious. I'd say 3.5-4 stars on the apps; 4 stars on her dish; 4.5 stars on mine. Service was great, and the owner popped out a few times to ask how things were and thanked us multiple times for coming in--very friendly. So food=4; service=5 and round up. Sameem's catered our rehearsal dinner and backyard wedding 7 years ago. Just this past weekend we had them do my mom's retirement party. Never ignore the warning signs. That was a lesson we learned yesterday at Sameem. Generally when a dining establishment has over 200 reviews with the average of 4.5 stars one should safely assume that the place is authentic and the food is really good. So you take a 15 miles ride and expect it to be a memorable experience. Well, the memorable part was there alright. Anyway, we came in around 6:30 pm and the place was practically empty. It has a strange layout of an apartment with the first and second floor dining rooms. The decor is very outdated and we were greeted by the owner who was wearing Crocks and shorts. He asked if we have a reservation, which we did not and the point is there were literally 6 people in the whole place so why bother asking? We were taken to the upstairs room and, despite the fact that every table was available, we were seated right in front of the restroom, which had the door wide open. Outside the fact that there is a restroom right in the middle of the dining room, why would you seat us in front of it when there are plenty of tables available? We asked for a different table by the window and were seated there. The hostess was beginning to look very annoyed. Skipping to the food. We ordered black tea, I ordered Aash (it is a soup I am familiar with), and we ordered Emperor Plate. I am not going to go into details about the food and just say one thing: it was simply awful. The soup was barely warm, the noodles in the soup were of prepackaged variety, the rice was cold, the meat was dry, barely warm, rubbery and tasteless. But the highlight was the tea. Yes, tea. In a place like this you should expect a great tea with mint leaf and cubed sugar on the side, right? It should come with pear-shaped glasses perhaps and a little ornate tea pot, right? What we got instead was student cafeteria-variety cups with the disgusting brown liquid that smelled like worn out floor mop - yak! The evening was completely ruined, and I really think we should have walked out when asked about reservations by the shorts-wearing owner. One other thing I forgot to mention: flies. There were quite a few of them buzzing around. What a place! read more
