Came here for lunch. I had seen this place reviewed well on google so i thought i would give it a try. Generally I'm a pretty big fan of spicy foods, so i got the lamb vindaloo. the vindaloo was one of several curries which had a three chilli icon next to it, which seemed to indicate that this dish was spicy. the dish came out fairly quickly and came with rice, and my server was pretty friendly. i also got a paratha since i haven't had any indian bread in a while i felt like the vindaloo was fine. the biggest issue i had was that i really didn't think it was spicy at all, despite the fact that this is supposed to be one of the hotter dishes on the menu. probably adjusted for american palette. another issue i had was that i didn't feel like the vindaloo/curry had much depth to it; it tasted fine but wasn't really rich and was almost a little watery. the lamb itself was okay. the standout was probably the bread, though i kind of wish there was a little more overall i thought it was fine. i thought it was actually fairly pricey for what it was: $18 curry, 5 bread, 3 tax and 4 tip comes out to $30 for just an okay lunch, so... eh. maybe i would come back but it would probably depend on how much i felt like indian and if i was in the neighborhood already read more

Some of the best Indian takeout I've had in STL. The chili paneer had the perfect flavor and texture combo. Butter chicken is a bit on the sweeter side but I absolutely loved it. Absolutely delicious! We each had a cup of Tom Yum soup which was piping hot and spicy. This was followed by Lamb Vindaloo, Yellow Curry with chicken and paratha bread which is similar to naan. I would recommend this place 100 times over. The food is so delicious! I have been multiple times and I have liked everything I've tried. The food comes out hot and fresh. I really enjoyed the chai beverage. I like how they have two sides of the menu which provides you with more options. I definitely recommend the chicken tikka masala. The service is good and they usually have seating available. I enjoy the ambience as well and the decor in the restaurant. Over time quality and consistency have gone down hill considerably. Used to be a great. Butter chicken in particular used to be a rich and well spiced dish with generous portion of chicken, a deep red - now it is light orange and sweet with some overcooked (to the point of dryness) chicken breast. We returned to Basil India. The food is full of heat, even the selections marked 'mild.' We chose out items carefully keeping this in mind. The restaurant itself still looks hastily set up with a mush mash of tables and decorations. When we visited a year ago, they were new and perhaps did not have the opportunity to purchase better accoutrements. Our dinner for two was more expensive than we expected. It was $73 and with the added tip in the high eighties, putting our dinner at over $40 a person. Even though the food was interesting, I doubt if we will return again. The cost of the meal may have been acceptable if the experience was finished with better tables, chairs and quieter environment. The noise level was very high in this establishment. When we left, every table was full and there were people standing uncomfortably in the restaurant waiting for a table to sit at. We could not hear our waitress and had to ask her to repeat herself a number of times. She asked if we wanted bread with our meal and my husband agreed. She then offered some choices and the way she offered the bread, or naan, it sounded like it came along with the meal (like Italian bread at a pasta house.). My friends and I got takeout and it was pretty good! The food was made in good time. I got the haka haka noodles which were very yummy and filling. The one entrée actually lasted me 3 meals. We went recently and were very pleasantly surprised. The quality of food was very high, the service levels were excellent, and the ambience is vastly improved from what it had been. Don't expect anything super chic, but the elements were all there. Basil India seems to have reduced their menu offerings to just mainly Indian items - they had many Asian items that had been marked off as they mentioned they're changing up their menu a bit. We were totally OK with this since the food we did order was delicious! Our waitress had recommended the Chicken Lababdar as it has a tomato base and a nice amount of spice. The gravy was delicious and fresh, there were big chunks of chicken that were perfectly cooked! We also got 2 paranthas to eat with the chicken - they were smaller than we had expected But there were 4 total pieces for each type which was more than enough! We have gotten Basil India for takeout a few times and really enjoyed it. The fan favorites, like the Tangra Style Chili Paneer and the Hakka Noodles are not overrated! The "naan" reminds me a bit more of a flaky Singaporean roti. It is SO good. And overall, the food is filling but not too heavy like some Indian and Thai food. It was a random selection for a group dinner in St. Louis while visiting for work. We ordered Samosas and Paneer chili for appetizer. They were both hot and spicy. Samosas were served with sweet chili sauce instead of the traditional tamarind chutney. It was a delicious combination. For entrees we ordered Thai green curry with chicken, Masaman curry with shrimp and Butter chicken. They all tasted good but were too rich. Perhaps too much coconut milk. All dishes came with rice. We also ordered Parathas but they clearly were store bought Malaysian parathas. Not Indian parathas. They did not have a good selection of breads like Naans and Authentic Indian parathas. We came here for lunch early in the week about a month ago and placed our name on the Yelp waitlist before arrival. When we got there only two tables were occupied in the dining room but the guy working the counter told us we needed to wait because we didn't have a reservation. I explained to him that we had put ourselves on the waitlist and he said he hadn't been checking that. He seemed very inconvenienced to have to accommodate us. We also asked him about how long lunch would take since we hadn't been there before and we had a meeting to get back to. He told us it "wouldn't take an hour or anything" but it did end up taking a hour and many of us had to leave and run back to our work place. The shining star of this meal was the food. I ordered the lunch special and my curry was flavorful and delicious. Their heat scale is intimidating because it goes from 0-20! I ordered a 10 and it was really hot actually. My coworkers who ordered 12 or 14 where really sweating. We also ordered naan which didn't come out until after our meal. It was really good but more helpful to come out with the meal. I would definitely go back for the food but the organization/timing needs a little improvement. read more

The portions are pretty big and we had food to take home. I also had a mango lassi which was refreshing! It did take a while for our food to come out but the service was very nice. I had been here once before when they had just opened and it looks much nicer now with a lot of tables and varied decor on the walls. I have waited for 5 years for St Louis to have a decent Indochinese restaurant. Basil India is answer to my prayers and finally the dining scene in Stl is complete! Now, St Louis can taste authentic hakka noodles and tangra chilli chicken. Tangra is a style of cooking Indochinese from Calcutta. All the fried rice options looked so tempting, but we settled on Yang xou fried rice with shrimp, chicken and lamb. Last but not the least, Chicken in ginger and scallion sauce was the best dish of the day. The aroma of fresh ginger in a soy sauce base with the hint of fire of the wok is the most delicious taste ever. If you are new to Indochinese, do give it a shot. There are many Thai and Indian options on the menu which will have to wait for next time.. we did try butter chicken and naan( which is more like a lacha paratha) - just the best butter chicken in the world- must must try! Will I be going back- of course! 100%. If this place was closer it would be my weekly staple- but since it's a drive away, I will have to settle for once a month. read more

We live in the area and are always looking for a good Indian food spot without having to drive 20+ minutes. This popped up within 10 minutes of our house, not sure how we missed it! My fiancé isn't huge on Indian takeout, so he was glad that they had some other options. He ended up with the pad Thai spicy - and it's SPICY. They don't lie. I got the paneer tikka masala and it was okay. It was definitely pretty spicy (which is how it should be made, it's my fault for being a baby), but other than the actual level of spiciness, it didn't feel like it had a ton of flavor. They also aren't very generous with their rice, a small container. Their samosas were bomb. Our biggest complaint was price, I expected a good size meal (like other local spots) for the price it was at, and both meals were in pretty small containers. When I picked the order up, for $45 it was not a lot, so that was disappointing. It was good, if we lived directly in the area, we would probably go again for convenience, but personally since it's still a 10 minutes drive, I probably won't go again. read more

I thoroughly enjoyed both meals, and the tikka masala had enough spiciness to make it more enjoyable. I should have bought an extra rice with my orders! It was that good. I have never personally eaten inside the restaurant since I ordered to-go, but the ambiance looks nice, and the interior is decorated well. I was driving down Grand and I saw this place and thought it sounded cool. I made a note of it and eventually made it back to eat here. Im glad I did, because this place is great! I ordered the chicken tikka masala and my wife got the garlic fried rice. Mine was good; it came in a nice, rich, creamy sauce. At first I was concerned it wasnt very much, but it was, and I left with leftovers. However, I was mesmerized by my wife's garlic fried rice. It smelled good and tasted great. I want to go back just to order that. It may have looked fairly plain, but it was so good! The wait staff was a pleasure to deal with. The restaurant looked pretty good. It's interesting - the restaurant serves a mix of Indian and Thai food, and I think they did a good job with that. I feel like they had some more unusual dishes, especially on the Indian side. Basil India has quickly become one of my favorite consistently delicious, low-key restaurants to bring friends to. I have tried several dishes and am repeatedly surprised with the flavor and quality of each dish. The portions are larger than they look, and even without appetizers we couldn't finish! Spice levels are hot enough to enjoy but not overwhelming. The service is responsive to the needs of the customers and the restaurant had an enjoyable vibe with good music, plants, and beautiful art work. Lastly, the meals are clean, high quality, and don't make you tired after. Enjoy Basil India before the crowds find out! P.S.
