We had an outstanding experience with Extended Horizons, led by divemaster Gustavo "Gu." Recent Maui rains reduced visibility at many sites, but Gu adjusted the plan and guided us to the best possible conditions. That made the difference. These were refresher dives for our group, and Gu handled them exactly right. He quickly assessed each diver's experience, our small group included both newer divers with fewer than ten dives and others with more than 70, but with time since our last dives. His review of fundamentals, safety, and buoyancy control was clear and structured, without slowing the group down. He also reinforced reef etiquette and respect for marine life in a practical, no-nonsense way. This team takes responsible diving seriously. What stood out most was Gu's site knowledge. Not just which sites to choose, but where to position within each site to maximize visibility and encounters. He set expectations on what we might see, spotted eagle rays, green sea turtles, white-tip reef sharks, snowflake moray eels, and more, and then delivered. We saw all of it. With two divers carrying cameras, he was mindful of positioning, and I came away with great shots of eagle rays, reef sharks, and multiple turtles. The highlight was a turtle cleaning station at Mala Wharf, with six turtles active at once and eagle rays passing nearby. It was one of those rare dives where something meaningful is happening in every direction. The attached photo captures that exact moment, multiple turtles gathered at the cleaning station with eagle rays moving through the scene. Phenomenal Dive Experience with Extended Horizons! We booked our scuba diving excursion through The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, and could not have been happier with the experience provided by Extended Horizons. As newly certified divers, we were a bit nervous going into our first post-certification dive, but our Dive Master, Michael, made it an absolutely incredible and comfortable experience from start to finish. Michael was punctual, professional, and incredibly charismatic. My son and I had a great experience with Extended Horizons last week. We decided to go diving last minute and Eric (owner) was very hands on helping us get everything set up for a beach dive. I've been certified for years but it's been a few years and this was my sons first dive. Our instructor Michael was knowledgeable, thorough, and patient while we oriented ourselves with the equipment and made our initial decent beneath the surface. Unfortunately visibility wasn't great and the current had us working harder than I would have liked, but it still turned out to be a great day! What really impressed me is the service I received after the dive. I reached out to Eric to thank him for his help and let him know about the conditions and he took the time to listen and sincerely shared in our excitement. We've been lucky enough to travel to Maui a few times and I've been diving every time, but sharing this experience with my son made it the best dive yet. We absolutely loved our experience diving with Gu and Ty!! We were a little rusty, but Gu reviewed everything with us and we felt completely comfortable. He also prepped us with details about the animals we were likely to see and fun info about their behaviors so we knew what to look for - we saw rays, turtles, moray eels, and an octopus! We did two shore dives at Airport Beach and the team did a great job of adjusting the plan given some areas of reduced visibility after the recent severe storm, so we still had an amazing experience. Gu knew every detail of the reef so knew exactly where to take us. Everyone we interacted with including the instructors and the people we spoke to about scheduling were kind, flexible, and informative. Went on 4 different shore dives with Gabi and she was excellent! Very friendly, professional and safety oriented and man can she find some interesting things down there. There's no way I would have found Harlequin shrimp, pipefish or the nudibranchs she found while guiding me and one other diver through some spectacular sites. Blackrock is a must do! Had an inquisitive turtle swim up and almost high five me! Hopefully we'll get to Mala Pier on our next trip! Had to change sites due to swell and current conditions. read more

I did my 4 open water referral dives with Gu from Extended Horizons, and my friend did their own dive on one day and joined me for both dives the 2nd day (dives 3/4). I can't say enough nice things about my experience with the owners, my instructor Gu, and the dives themselves. We did shore dives since their boat was docked for periodic maintenance and had a blast at Mala pier and old airport beach. Gu was outstanding in his clarify of skill checks for the referral and at making sure we saw everything possible diving, he was amazing at finding tiny nudibranch, eel, and all sorts of creatures. We saw a TON of turtles at Mala and strongly recommend checking it out, there were whitetip sharks just chilling, plenty of swim throughs, frog fish, eels, and lots of other critters. I was coming in with SDI certs and Extended Horizons is a PADI shop, they made sure to cover all my SDI skills and added in the PADI things they thought would help out in the long term. We had six amazing dives with Michael S of Extended Horizons. First four were open water certification for my teenager, and we had such a good experience that we booked two dives once the certification was done. Michael is a great instructor, super knowledgeable about sea life and fun to hang out with. We saw at least a dozen of turtles, half a dozen white tip sharks and an untold variety of fish, all of which Michael named for us in real time during the dives, writing on his handy tablet. This is our second time diving with Extended Horizons. we did our first open water dives with them back in 2008 and decided to go shore diving with them again yesterday. They have a great online booking system that allows you to sign waivers etc before the dive which saves time on the day of. Due to poor visibility at other locations, we did two dives at airport beach. Both were about 50 minutes and though the vis wasn't great, we still saw multiple turtles, eels, Slipper Lobster and a ton of fish. One thing to note: Their dive shop / boat storage is neat and organized and they obviously take pride in their equipment and property, which in my mind speaks volumes about their professionalism. We plan on diving with them again in two days. If you are considering diving in the Lahaina / Kaanipali area, I highly recommend them. read more

My brother and I had been referred to Extended Horizons from a local dive shop back in California. We were on a tight schedule due to our vacation plans but Extended Horizons was able to get us set up with a great 2 Tank Shore dive. Included in our pricing was rental gear as well. We arrived at the shop and all of the staff was great. We were introduced to Hannah who would be our guide for the day and she was wonderful. She got us situated with gear. We went over our experience and what we wanted to do/ see for the day. We loaded up and met her at Kahekili Beach Park for dive #1. Since this was my first dive after being certified she recommended we dive here for it's easy entry and overall conditions. We found out that Hannah has a degree in Marine Biology and would dive with a small scribble pad. During our dive she was able to point out every fish, sea animal and interesting thing letting us know what it was. She was also very helpful in offering tips and pointers during the dive. Wrapping up there we headed to Mala Pier and that's where we had a lot of fun. She knew everywhere to go and explore finding us all kinds of fish and turtles to enjoy. 10/10 would highly recommend Extended Horizons to anyone for a great Dive experience! I've always had a fantastic time diving with Extended Horizons and this trip we booked a Discover Scuba dive for two uncertified divers in our group. Not only did Extended Horizons do a fantastic job of preparing and guiding the two uncertified divers, but they also fit us in last minute while dealing with the boat in drydock. Four of us went on the dive (two certified and two uncertified) along with the two guides from Extended Horizons. Everyone had an absolute blast. We saw our instructor at the Shell gas station the day before we met him. Keith had one prosthetic leg and he was in a wetsuit getting gas (we could tell he was a diver and thought he was so cool!). I told BF we should've taken a photo with him that day, but the next morning we had the pleasure (and additional two days) of diving with him for our OW (PADI Open Water) referral and night dive (5 dives total - $250 for OW and $90 for night dive). I made reservations with Erik for the OW referral via e-mail and he was very professional about getting back to me and accommodating our hectic schedule (we were also there for a wedding) and even fit us in on a Sunday! The first two dives were at Airport Beach and the second day of two dives were at Black Rock and Kapalua Beach. Keith took us to Kapalua after checking out Mala Wharf (sunken pier with the sharks) and seeing the visibility sucked that day due to the weather. Luckily, we saw lots of fish and TURTLES! Keith got all of our skills in without hampering on our downtime and make the OW referral fun! He taught us how to improve our dive form and was writing on the slate like crazy naming all the cool scorpion fish, puffer fish, angel fish, urchins, etc. so we learned a lot underwater. I really appreciated that b/c he was actively teaching the whole dive. Keith got a lot of photos of us underwater the second dive and took photos of the creatures on the nightdive. He guaranteed turtles and we saw lots of them sleeping in the coves of the coral and swimming by us. I would definitely recommend doing your OW referral or any dive with Keith. We are experienced divers but have had a 15 year hiatus since last diving. We now live in Maui and are diving again. Our enthusiasm is unchanged but we're both over 70 now and, in spite of a refresher course, some skills still need work. (for me, it's buoyancy!) Victoria, Mike and Chris crewed our trip, with Cap't Victoria doing a great job of getting through choppy waters to "Secret Cove" on the far side of Lanai'i. The attention to detail at Extended Horizons is impressive: overhead netting on board to hold dry clothing, individual water bottles (with name tags!), little hanging bags for glasses, sunglasses & phones. They even store your street shoes for the duration and rinse your personal dive gear for you! Marine head and fresh water shower on board. A pre-dive safety & dive site briefing was given & divers were divided into two groups. Once on site, divers were efficiently helped to don equipment, enter & descend. As a returning diver with some "issues", I cannot thank the crew enough (Chris, especially) for offering extra help (specifically, re-boarding) without making me feel like an old, stupid, crippled nuisance! The dives were great. Chris was our dive master and we benefited from his super powers: locating interesting things, pointing them out, and keeping tabs on everyone - their whereabouts, air, bottom time, & safety. First Cathedral, especially the first time, needed a lot of preparation & these were the perfect folks for the job! I can only imagine the mess an unprepared group could make blundering around in there! During the surface interval, a yummy - & nourishing - snack was served, adventures shared, and the safety briefing for the second dive was given. The Oreos during the ride home were a welcome surprise. Chris and Mike are the Park Rangers of underwater Maui County! They know every creature, where to find it (and, it seems, where it was last week and where it's going to be next week!). They know the ecology of our Islands and when "bad actors" (e.g. Crown of Thorn urchins ) aren't really bad...& why. They pointed out wonderful tiny things (a Gold Lace Nudibranch) and fabulous bigger ones (a grey Frog Fish). We even saw a rare male Whitley's Boxfish...and his lady friend! Anything we spotted, they could identify, & write on their underwater Etch-a-Sketches. On the trip home the debriefing included not only the usual white board, but also a stack of books and photos. The education was tremendous. Mike is a photographer, so photos are available and the "whiteboard" posted on Facebook for reference. This is a top notch operation; incredibly knowledgeable and extremely ecology-minded. In spite of strict attention to detail and safety, there was much laughter and fun. My only suggestion? I am super terrified of the water and get claustrophobic really easily. I started freaking out and didn't think that this was going to happen. Granted my heart was racing the ENTIRE time being under water, but Dave really helped me face my fears and was there every step of the way.
