Amazing experience. Doug is a great dive leader and knows the area and all the local animals hangouts. We met in the morning by his car in the parking lot where we suited up and headed out. He took me through the coral reef and pointed out the various fishes and cool rock formations. We even heard whales singing in the distance. to a group of caves off Makena where we saw sharks and turtles sleep and a hidden lagoon. He found all sorts of cool creatures from big fish to tiny Nutibranches and had a great sense of humor through the whole experience. Safety was also big, he tied the dive flag to him so that all the boats in the area always knew where we were, since it's a popular place for snorkel tour boats now. I felt safe and comfortable the whole dive. His prices are a fantastic deal! He provided the gear and leads a tour all for a decent price of $69 . It was a fantastic last minute dive excursion!! Unexpectedly found some free time. The staff of the Hilton Grand Vacation highly recommend this local family run dive service. WOW, I was invited to Maui with some friends a while ago to get certified in SCUBA. How awesome to get certified in Maui, I am so spoiled. I have to say, I studied my buns off before we arrived. We went just to dive, and to dive with Shaka. I had no idea why. Then I found out. He picked us up in his SCUBA short bus, and had a bubble machine that blew bubbles out of the back of the short bus, which I thought was hilarious! Shaka Doug is one of the most incredible instructors you will ever meet. He made sure all my equipment fit correctly, i was completely knowledgeable by the time we went in the ocean. He took us in of the coast, He knew all the sweet spots. I had the opportunity to see stingrays, hold octopus, learn under water sign language, teamwork, we saw shark. That's a funny story because he took us to a cave and it was asleep, he did something to unsettle it , it woke and went right back to sleep and I nearly peed my suit. It was an incredible experience. He showed us cleaner shrimp, these things if you open your mouth wide enough, they will go in and clean all the tarter and bacteria off your teeth. It was awesome. We saw ell, and starfish, seahorse, there are even underwater caves with small air pockets, where you can take off your masks and breath. It was spectacular. When you are down there it is such a different world, and you can feel that everything is watching you. kinda creepy, but super awesome! I live on land for a reason. I have to say I have dove before, twice with Doug, several times else where and the experiences were cool, how could they not be. Doug is personal, fun, and will show you things no one else will! If you get a chance while in Maui, look him up, I guarantee you will not be disappointed!!! I took my test and passed, I was certified before I left! I had an initial review posted here that was a bit more visceral, since I wrote it when immediately when I returned from Maui. I realized that my tone was not helpful, so I would like to simply itemize a list of my brief experience with Shaka Doug Corbin. Just the facts, now, without opinion: 1. We were greeted by Doug and followed him to what we thought was the dive site. Doug was actually pulling over a woman to confront her about her bad driving, with us in tow. 2. Doug drove away without calling us and telling us where he went. When I called him to find out where he was, he yelled at me for not being able to find him. We are not from Maui and didn't know where we were going. 3. At that time, my dive buddy (girlfriend) told me to forget our dive with Doug. I ignored her request because I did not want to ad insult to injury and have him lose his income for the day. 4. Doug did give us fresh fruit and water at the dive site, after calming down from the road incident. 5. Another dive master came up to us and told us that he would not enter the water as choppy as it was. He walked away, and Doug advised us that he did not know what he was talking about. 6. We spent more time then was necessary for our liking above water learning shaka signs. 7. When we entered the water and swam beyond the swell, we spent about 400 psi and approximately 20 minutes cleaning the dive site of fishing line. During that time we lost Doug for about 8-10 minutes. We did not know where he went. 8. Doug presented fishing weights and line to us several times in his hand, to show us what he had found. 9. Doug found a small octopus. Pulled him out from his rock, and showed him to us. During that time, the octopus was inking large amounts. It managed to swim away and Doug chased him. I was hit in the process by his fins. 10. His camera was the first to catch sea life, including a small eel. That made it difficult to get my GoPro in, and most of my shots have his hand and camera in front of mine. 11. We made it to a cave and saw a sleeping turtle, and a lobster. 12. We had to head back because we were low on air. 13. I stopped for a brief moment to video a fish, looked over, and noticed Doug and my dive buddy swimming away. I was not advised that they were leaving the area and he did not check in with me. 14. I caught up to them, held her hand for the last 10 yards, and exited the water. Upon my exit, Doug had cautioned loudly (which I would have considered yelling) about a rock behind me as I leaned forward to help my dive buddy out of the water. I was upset with him and did not respond at that point. I felt my balance and my proximity to the rock was safe. 15. We all exited the water, my buddy went to the bathroom and Doug attempted to speak with me, but I was not happy with the underwater service we had received, so I kept to myself. Based on the earlier confrontation with the woman on the road, I deemed it best not to confront Doug at that time. 16. I went to the bathroom, met my buddy, and we walked back. She was agreeable that we should simply leave and forgo our second dive. Upon returning to the dive site, Doug informed us that he had a water pipe issue and had to leave. I agreed, paid him, he took some photos, and we left. These are the facts, as they unfolded, as myself and my girlfriend experienced them. Doug was having a bad day, and I initially did the best I could to go beyond the road rage experience, but after the first dive, I was dissatisfied with this dive and his demeanor as an underwater guide (having formerly been a tour guide and travel agent myself.) You'll have to decide if you want to give it a chance. We will not return. read more

While on our honeymoon, my wife and I did a couple shore dives with Shaka Doug and his Scuba Bus. Not only was Doug incredibly well versed in the animal life we saw on our dives, he is also very entertaining and a professional about diving. Doug catered the dives to our desires and gave us several options of locations with various recommendations. All the dives we did together were great and make sure you ask to see Doug's hidden talent of blowing underwater air bubbles in the shape of rings! I have personally recommended Shaka Divers to any diver I know who heads to Maui, and now I am recommending Shaka Divers to all my fellow Yelpers out there! Dove twice with Shaka Doug as a guide on two separate occasions! Once at Ulua Beach and once at 5 Caves. He meets you at the defined place and time. His Scubabus is loaded for all shapes and sizes if you didn't bring your gear with you. Make sure you let him know what you especially want to see, like nudibranchs, shrimp, frogfish, turtles, & eels. He definitely knows where all the critters are and will help you see the best sights of Maui underwater. Got to see an Ulua at Ulua beach, imagine that! His pre dive briefing was awesome including how to get in through the rocks at the 5 Caves entrance. I love the conservation mind he has, picking up fishing weights and hooks at the dive sites and making collages of them and displaying them at the local art show. He's flexible in scheduling even if you get stuck at Honolulu airport because your flight got cancelled. He's easy going and adapts to all skill levels, making it fun for all. I have over 1000 dives and have arranged for dives guides in other places and by far Doug is hands down the most profession, easiest to work with, and reasonable guide I have used. I use guides because I am usually solo and find that guides make diving in an unfamiliar site much more enjoyable. Can't wait to get back to Maui to dive with Shaka Doug! Last week, I had the pleasure of diving with Shaka Doug - He came well recommended by ScubaBoard, which I figured was a good sign, but, I still didn't know what to expect. When I met him with my daughter, we discussed experience, what we wanted to see, weather and water conditions, and he came up with a couple of sites to look at. We went to make sure the sites condition was as good as expected, and, it was. During each dive, he knew the sites like the back of his hand - where every animal was hiding, currents, and, most importantly in shore diving, how to get in and out without frustration. Also, we opted to buy his pictures, which was a very nicely produced CD with a custom label of us, pictures, and videos from our dives, all bundled together in a nice slideshow. At $40, this is a steal - I brought my own camera too, and, still am very happy with the decision to buy his pictures as well. Diving with Shaka Divers was the highlight of my trip to Maui - I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone. read more

Our family went on a guided snorkel trip with Shaka Divers. Doug was a fantastic guide. Even though the kids had snorkeled on their own in the past, this trip was unique in that Doug showed them many things they would have missed. He pointed out Octopus ink, eels, Scorpionfish, etc. We purchased a CD of the outing which has photos and video of many of the highlights of their outing. Highly recommend Shaka Divers/Doug! Simply put, one of the top 5 experiences in my life! Shaka Doug was recommended by a local BNB family we were living with as the best diver in Maui, and I have to say, everyone was right. Doug knew all of the killer spots, got us great shots in the water, and was great in bringing diving down to what it really is: Underwater cruising with some of the best marine-life buddies and views man could ever ask for. We saw a couple Honu (Sea Turtles), met a friendly Octopus (dude is awesome with them), a couple sleeping sharks and countless fish, urchins, and other critters. Couldn't have asked for more! Not sure what kinda bad juju the other guy on here was smoking, but I'm about as picky as it gets with ratings here, and I gotta say, the 5 Star here is well deserved. Do yourself a favor, next time you're in Maui, find sometime for a single dive with Shaka Doug. You'll be hooked for sure as we now are. Based on six shore dives over three different days our experience with Shaka Divers was excellent. Doug was knowledgeable, safety-conscious, respectful of the environment and knew how to make our diving experience really fun. This was our second vacation on which we went diving and our first time shore diving. There is something to see as soon as you go down. I've been diving with Doug with Shaka Divers for over 15 years and dozens of dives and during that time have always had awesome experiences. Doug not only makes sure that each dive is safe but also interesting and fun (he has a great sense of humor, is genuinely personable and is unmatched in his ability to blow bubble rings!). My significant other is less experienced as a diver and as a result tends to get a bit anxious about diving. Doug always makes sure that she is comfortable and keeps a very watchful eye over her and the entire group. In addition to keeping things safe and secure, Doug shares his extensive knowledge of the various dive sites, the types of fish and animals one is likely to encounter and the topography of the area. Above all, Doug is highly conscientious of the environment and takes time to ensure that he leaves the reef better than he found it by collecting debris (old fish hooks, weights etc.). I dove with Shaka Doug last year and had a wonderful experience. If you want to do no-frills shore diving he's your guy. He knows his way around some of the best spots in Maui, and about the marine life you encounter. Not only is he a great dive guide, but you can tell he really cares about his "place of work". This is my second time around diving with Shaka Doug at Shaka Divers. I had some diving friends come to town, and on short notice, they wanted to hit the water, so I immediately called Shaka Doug. He told us to wait two days because conditions were kind of rough, and sure enough, he was right. My friends managed to squeeze some surfing in and then 3 days later, when the water calmed down, Doug was able to take them diving in the same place they went surfing. Conditions change quickly around here, and that's where a guy like Shaka Doug comes in handy. He knew exactly what was going on with the water and helped my friends make the most out of their vacation. I don't surf, but I did make the dive, and conditions turned out excellent. Can't say enough about having an experienced, local dive master like Shaka Doug to take you out shore diving. His motto is "More bubbles, less troubles", and I believe it, after going out with him a second time. read more

Shaka Divers made my family trip to Maui a memorable one. Shaka Doug did an awesome job getting my kids comfortable going back into the water after a long winter of not being on scuba. He had all of us laughing with his jokes and we all loved his scuba bus. Shaka Doug did a great job at showing us around the reefs that we visited on our one day and one night of shore diving. He was a very knowledgeable and experienced diver. We saw lots of cool marine life on our dives from sea turtle to squid plus Shaka was great at finding things we would of missed. We purchased some of the photos he took of us after the dive and I'm glad we did. After I got home I checked them out and there were some really good photos of my family above and below the water. I was happy to print them out and put them on display both at home and in the office. If you are ever in Maui and want to do some shore diving definitely go with Shaka Divers.
