What a FANTASTIC experience!!! My husband is PADI open water certified and thought I might like to try scuba diving on our honeymoon here in Maui. Our hotel, the Westin Villas, works with Five Star Scuba to offer introductory scuba lessons from our hotel beach. We stopped in and met Caitlin and she told us all there was to know about how the into dive worked. From the moment we met her we knew we were going to have a great experience!! A few days later we showed up for our into dive and I was a little nervous. I have tried snorkeling and hated it! Swallowed too much water in really choppy water :/ but Caitlin and my husband assured me I would have a great time. The best was that we started in the pool to learn the basic skills and to get the hang of breathing with a regulator. I felt so ready to get in the ocean after that! Once we got in the water, I loved it! At one point I had a bit of a panic attack because I was overthinking the breathing but Caitlin was AWESOME!!! She calmed me down and reassured me and from then on I had one of the greatest experiences of my life!! Jose and Dennis were EXCELLENT! We joined Jose for the 8:00am dive and he did a great job of pointing out fish and the whale calls. Dennis was our guide for the night dive. He had a calm demeanor, great stories and was a thorough teacher which was reassuring for my first night dive! Dennis did a superb job of making the most of our time in the water. Highly recommend!! Black Rock dives were a great way to pack in a lot of the ocean life. Although we were staying north of the area, the beach path was a pleasant and scenic walk to the dive shack. Dennis is an amazing dive master. He is thorough in the safety review and is a dolphin in the water. I celebrated my 67th birthday underwater with him. I have been diving for 20 years but now have two artificial knees. He assisted me in putting on my right fin because my knee wouldn't bend -- a very humbling experience when you find out you are no longer 35. He removed my tank before coming out of the water because of my knees. Underwater, he found a rare Hawksbill turtle, a gorgeous white mouth spotted eel, and a HUGE barracuda. It was an awesome dive. We have a third dive scheduled with him. Would highly recommend requesting him for your dive master. read more

We got PADI certified with Brent on our honeymoon and it was an incredible experience. He came highly recommended by a friend and we could see why! (We've already recommended him to other friends going to Maui). He is patient, kind, flexible and took us on some amazing dives! We did our first dive in Cuba so we already knew the basics, but he gave us a much-needed refresher. We had never done a shore dive, but he made it easy for me to get in/out of the water with the equipment. I have struggled in the past with neutral buoyancy and Jose's patient approach enabled me to find the "sweet spot"...finally! Five Star Scuba (Grand Wailea location): This was my first experience with scuba diving and 5 Star made my trip! All of the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Kat, Greg, and Frosty walked me through scuba diving so I felt safe and secure at all times. I had been a weak swimmer without any confidence in the water. Now I am sure of my skills and can enjoy the water! TIP: Walk along the beach trail to the Grand Wailea pool area and ask for Five Star Scuba. They are a 7 minute walk from the Marriott nearby and many other hotels. You don't have to be a Grand Wailea guest. I will definitely be coming back. read more

This review is for Brent (scuba booth located at the Marriott Ocean Club location). I am a certified diver and have dived in California and several countries in Central America, but I had surgery around my ear a few months ago. I let Brent know about the surgery and we discussed at length how we would descend slowly to make sure my ears were ok (equalizing) and plan B if at any point my ears were not ok. Brent is extremely patient, professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. My night dive with Brent was great and we saw a ton of night sea life, including sharks and turtles! Review of the Grand Wailea location: I had my very first dive with this group a few years ago, which got me hooked - today I'm at the PADI rescue level. It's been a while so I worked with the folks at 5-star at the hotel: Michael, Drew, and Mark. All three of them are excellent! I got a refresher and dove with Michael who gave me excellent and helpful pointers. Then later on dove with Mark who gave a really patient and fun dive. Grand Wailea location. Staying at Grand Wailea made it easy to set up shore dives. They are currently doing major construction at pool area so first day there was a minor communication on timing so had to reschedule. Also being this being a slow time, I ended up being the only diver with Master Diver Marc. The first dive was right in front of hotel and to the South. Due to winds it was a little murky, but still saw plenty of fish and turtles. A day later Marc took me to Makena landing. This was an awesome dive. Marc showed me a shore dive with a cave and tunnel. Saw at least 8 turtles Swimming and resting in the cave. Saw several eels, lobsters, and one shark. Amazing dive and Marc was great in showing me the sights. Marc also was very helpful in tips since I had purchased a new mask. He gave tips on removing the film to prevent fogging and cleaning and storing the mask. Marc also took photos of the sea life and myself swimming with the turtles. Highly recommended. Thank you read more

I went with them due to the good reviews but I would not recommend going with my instructor Jim. This was my first time scuba diving and I took time to learn the basics and wasn't very comfortable right away. Jim is impatient with a beginner like me and seemed to be annoyed when I asked questions about cleaning water from my mask etc. the dive went well but I was struggling to stay flat and finally when I decided to come up, he screamed mad at me for apparently not " listening" to him under water. Hello! I am trying my best to interpret your actions but looks like you did a poor job explaining them to begin with. The dive was ok but walked away feeling bad due to his attitude of "why don't you get this, it's so simple". Bruce, the photographer who dived with us was the saving grace. He should have been the instructor since he seemed to have patience to deal with a beginner. Bottom line, Stay away from Jim! read more

Brought my family to dive Black Rock as I did a scooter dive with a dive Master named Piper 13 years ago. I was completely satisfied with the professionalism and service that both Jim and Bruce payed to me and my family on our scooter dive this morning. I have been diving for 36 years but my family isn't that experienced. Both Jim and Bruce took great care of my wife and kids and they had a blast. We saw turtles, eels, and a couple eagle rays. The scooters are a must. 5 Star's scooters worked and were in good condition, thanks to Jim and Bruce, however, there are newer, better and more reliable models available. If it's an option 5 Star should upgrade their scooters. read more

He kept taking photos of us snd just got in our way during the dive. Then after diving he had the audacity to try and sell us the photos just a shame. Had a great refresher course with Alan this morning. Alan really knows scuba, got me back up to speed on land and pool. We then went for a shore dive. Alan made sure I saw great sea life. He made a point of showing me species unique to Hawaii. Definitely an experience not to be missed when you visit Maui. read more

What an experience! This was my first time, and what a great time I had. Colin rocked & took very good care of us! I had trouble w/my mask when we were in the ocean & he was kind enough to give me his to use for the remainder of the dive. Colin knows what he is doing & I can't wait to go again. BTW.... Yes Colin the hot towel at the end is the way to go! While staying at the Ka'anapali Alii, I made a reservation to do a shore dive at Black Rock. Brent from Five Star Scuba took me diving there and I had a wonderful time. It was a great dive - 45 minutes of bottom time, and we saw several species of eels, an eagle ray, a black-tipped reef shark, several turtles, and a whole lot more. The gear they provided was perfect. I had to pay a little bit more then I thought because it was an "off-site" dive, but overall it was one of the highlights of my trip to Maui. read more

5 Star was phenomenal! This was my first time diving and it could not have gone any better. I never was comfortable with the sensation of water in my ear /nose. However, Jose Silva was a very patient and knowledgeable instructor. For the discover scuba course, Jose spends ~1 hour going over the basics and skills in the pool. I booked from the Hyatt, so we did the introduction in their pool (9 feet deep). Then went out to the reef in front of the Hyatt resort. The 35 minute dive was ~ 30 feet at the deepest, the water was crystal clear, and we had the opportunity to see many different types of fish/coral. I loved it so much, I did a second dive with Jim at Black Rock. The Black Rock dive was a lot more fun. If you're thinking about scuba diving, definitely give these guys a call.
