"Hōkūleʻa A "Hōkūleʻa means "Star of Gladness" or "Glad Star", a term often used to describe a burial at sea ceremony in Hawaiian traditions. It is a way of honoring and respecting the deceased by returning them to the ocean, which holds significant cultural and spiritual importance in Hawaiian Culture. Blue Soul Maui is dedicated to honoring the "Hōkūleʻa tradition for at-sea burials in Hawaiian culture. If someone is looking to have a "Hōkūleʻa ceremony for a loved one, it is important to work with experienced and reputable providers who understand and respect the cultural significance and customs associated with this practice. Charlie, Vene (our officiant) and the rest of the crew at Blue Soul Maui do just that with a respectful and meaningful "Hōkūleʻa ceremony for your loved one. Mahalo and aloha to them for their dedication to honoring Hawaiian traditions and helping families during such important and emotional moments. Mahalo for honoring our Hawaiian traditions as we laid our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunty to rest in the place of her birth, Maui.

Had the most amazing day of whale watching with Charlie -- even though it was really early in the season. The paddling is no joke, but the hard work was ENTIRELY worth it when Charlie got us right out there among 15 or so whales. Absolute magic.

Our family had the best time learning to surf with Charlie. He's very knowledgeable, patient and so much fun. Our kids were confident enough to go try on their own a couple days later! Whatever adventure your vacation is calling for, you'll be happy with your time spent with Blue Soul. Mahalo Charlie!

We cannot speak highly enough about Charlie and Vene! They performed our mothers ash scattering and it was the most beautiful and perfect ceremony we could ever have imagined. Down to every single detail the traditional outrigger was beautifully decorated with care. The way they honored our every wish with no rush just calm and laid back. The Hawaiian blessings/chants along with blowing the conch first on beach while asking for blessings to spread our moms ashes in the aina, then also before we laid her in the water, were all exactly as we wanted. Traditional, honoring the mana of Hawaii, different from any other service I've been to, so personable, no rushing, no going through the motions everything was done with so much aloha bringing much peace to our hearts. Erasing the pain we felt and replacing it with love and happiness and such a treasured memory to hold on to forever. They gave me my mom back. Now when I look at her picture all I feel is love and peace. No more pain, I can't thank them enough for this beautiful gift of aloha. Next time we're back in Maui definitely going to hit them up for whale watching or surfing. Also to note that we brought our 2 year old and he loved it. So it's a great choice if you have kids. And all the video and pictures he took were just perfect. My husband did as well and looking back there way no need. Charlie captured everything we needed then even made us a slide show after.

Cannot recommend Blue Soul enough!!! Charlie was awesome in helping me with my father's ash scattering ceremony the day after Christmas. We were coming to Maui during a cruise. There were so many issues that delayed my family's disembarkation from the ship which caused us to be 2 hours late. I was so stressed because of the delays but Charlie was so patient and calming that he made me feel it would all be ok. The ash scattering ceremony was lovely. We paddled out on a double outrigger canoe. The kahuna spoke to the ancestors and gave respect to nature. He blew a conch and my father's ashes were poured into the deep blue of Maui. My family has a wonderful memorial for my father thanks to Blue Soul. Charlie provided us with bottled water, fruit, and pastries afterwards. Thank you Charlie! //...carie

We were swimming with SO. MANY. TURTLES. (Apparently if you go in the winter season, you'd see a lot of whales!)! I know there are other "turtle town spots around the island, and we've been to a "turtle town". But the sheer amount of turtles you will see here is unparalleled. Our guides Derek and Robbie were awesome: 1. They took so many photos of us - diving under waters to capture the turtles and us, took 200+ photos and 40 videos and was constantly in the water looking out for turtles. 2. They are also such great swimmers and made me feel at ease given that I'm fairly new to snorkeling. At some point I lost one of my fins and started panicking, but Derek swiftly recovered the lost fin! We also capsized at some point, but with Robbie's calm instructions, we quickly made it back to the kayak. Whew! 3. We also heard several interesting stories and facts about the history of the islands around. Overall, this is absolutely a can-not-miss tour in Maui and we can't wait to be back for the whale season!

We arrived at the center early and there is pay via app parking in the public lot and checked in for the morning brief before we boarded our boat, which was the Kai Ko, a sailing catamaran. Afterwards, the whole group walked down to the docks for boarding. The Kai Ko is a lot bigger than I expected, which was able to accommodate up to 130 people with seating for all on 3 decks. We sat at a bench with a table up forward, but you can sit on the covered upper deck under the sail boom behind the pilot house or on the lower deck with the snack bar. We had the best view forward, but it is exposed to the sun & sea spray. A couple of families sat in the cargo netting right above the waves. The Kai Ko does triple duty for whale watch excursions, as well as dinner cruises and snorkeling, so is equipped for all three trips. For whale watching, they only use the engine and do not raise the sails, which they do use for more relaxed dinner cruises. We motored out of the marina and out into Maalaea Bay and encountered a mother and baby Humpback whales almost immediately. Later we encountered another mother and calf that was also accompanied by an escort whale, which is rare. The mother showed her tail flukes on her last deep dive, which is used to identify the whale by their unique tail markings. You learn a lot of whale facts from the onboard guides. Later, one of the crew lowered a hydrophone in the water to record & broadcast Humpback whale songs over the ship's speakers, which was pretty cool. There were other whales that did full body breaches out of the water, but we were really far away. The whole whale watch cruise is 2 hours and returns you back to the docks exactly on the hour. It was an exciting excursion and we got back in time for lunch.

For us, we prefer the Sunset Cocktail cruise as it's the perfect amount of food and drinks. This last trip, we took the whole family for the express snorkel trip. It's a shorter trip, which worked perfectly for the younger kids and didn't tie up a big amount of island time. Captain Nick and his crew was all about making sure all had a great time while keeping safety at the top of mind. They guaranteed we'd see turtles... we did! Immediately. I accused them of being remote controlled because they were there right on cue! I'm not a big snorkel guy, but I had a blast. We'll keep returning to Sea Maui. Greatest crew on Maui !!

Our first trip…read moreout was an adults-only family excursion while the kids hung out with their grandma and auntie. The catamaran was pretty sweet, with some really comfy bean bags overlooking the edge out to the ocean. While we did occasionally get splashed in this area, it was worth the unobstructed view of the sunset and the breeze in my hair. The crew was especially sweet and treated all of us like absolute royalty. A note to those who are prone to motion sickness: do not try to be brave and only wear sea bands thinking you'll be okay. Take your Dramamine an hour before you board the catamaran. While the first half of our dinner cruise was fine with my motion sickness, the second half of the trip left me feeling really queasy around dinner service time. This made me very sad. This was no fault of the crew, and 100% my fault for thinking I could tough it out. If you are ill-prepared, the crew has ginger ale, club soda and ginger chews to help. Speaking of dinner, the few bites I was able to eat on our first trip were fantastic: a full dinner buffet prepared by Cafe Jai. The salmon was perfectly tender, as was the short rib. The caesar salad was just the right amount of tangy (and the extra dressing was really great on the salmon as well.) I'm not sure what kind of sauce was on the crispy seasoned potatoes but they were absolutely delightful. And of course, the crown on top of a delicious meal was the mini brownie cup we were served for dessert before we wrapped up the trip. Our second trip (where I was prepared with some Dramamine) was a memorial for our grandparents, where we released their cremains at sea with eco-urns. I must say that the crew handled everything wonderfully. We had the full bar, another beautiful buffet spread including some delicious crispy chicken, a pesto pasta salad, pulled beef sliders, and rolls. After we said our emotional goodbyes, we were given rose petals to release into the ocean. We even received certificates after the trip that gave us the coordinates of where my grandparents cremains were released. I seriously cannot thank Sea Maui enough for giving my family a truly memorable experience on our trip to Maui. They made our trip so special. A million thanks for the kindness!

That being said, I had fun reading about Eddie Pu from the informational placards at the start of the hike. Apparently he was a local who used to trek the entire island of Maui by foot once a year. He sounds a bit eccentric too because he would do it wearing a large leaf wrapped around his forehead, Karate Kid style, which he said was to ward off headaches. Well Eddie, I'm not sure if it was intentional but I do feel that in walking this hike, I tasted a small taste of the suffering you endured in your annual trek around the island. Come here in the winter and you may see whales spouting water in their migration from Alaska. Early in the mornings, turtles common in this area near shore. The trail bypasses a long man made breakwater made out of stones, running for a quarter mile parallel to shore. No snorkeling here, as this is the area where the boat tours go out of Kihei. The trail ends at the Kihei Surfside, but you can walk along the manicured grass areas to another trail by the Mana Kai Maui, and then onto Keawalapu beach, a popular beach for sun tanning. There is a dirt public parking area for the beach, alongside the Mana Kai Maui. Farther on is the Days Inn Maui Oceanfront hotel, which at $299 a night is the most expensive Days Inn in the world, next to Sorrentos and 5 Palms restaurants. The Eddie Pu hiking trail is named after an avid Maui hiker who hiked the coastlines of Maui for 25 years. For all that work he got an unpaved half mile coastline dirt trail named after him.
