I came here on Grandmas marathon weekend and the food was great. I ordered spaghetti and meatballs with a Cesar salad. The food came out quickly and was delicious. The waitress checked on me multiple times. The restaurant wasn't busy at all for Thursday evening I came in. Good price for the amount of food I ordered. I ordered 21 pizzas to pick up for a youth leadership retreat. Some locals had recommended this place and we love to support local businesses. They are located in an area with only street parking so you do need to make a plan to walk a little if there are no close spots. You can dine in or carry out. There was plenty of seating inside. Now for the important stuff! They had the pizzas ready at the exact time I ordered them for. When I walked in, I was greeted kindly and the staff was very friendly. For the size of the pizzas I thought the price was very fair. The taste of the pizza was great. Everyone kept going back for more! There was no skimping on the toppings either. Good pizza place! Sammy's knows how to make a thin crust pizza. We ordered the simple sausage and there was not a square that didn't have a piece of sausage on it! The flavor of the sausage was very good, not too spicy. The crust is by far the best thin crust I have had. Cheese bread is ok but the marinara was served cold...what? Come on Sammy's! We stopped in with a party of 10 after Grandma's marathon wanting to get away from the crowd a bit. I called on the way to make sure they could accommodate us and they said yes, come on in; it was busy but we didn't have to wait for table or service. Server was quick and friendly, 3 orders garlic cheese bread came out fast and dipping sauce was tasty. Got 3 large pizzas for our group, one sausage, one pepperoni, one cheese--sausage was my favorite, really excellent. (We ate it all up and didn't want leftovers; could have ordered one more large or done family sizes instead.) Crust was crispy with a nice little edge and cut into small squares so everyone could try all the kinds. Kid-friendly, group-friendly. Would definitely return! Okkkkk....... really upset right now. Ordered my first pizza from this place (BBQ chicken) and it was trash. The delivery guy dropped it off like normal which got me amped, but then I cracked the box open the cheese was sliding off lookin like a mud slide. Then in my attempt to eat it, I would only get a little bit of undercooked crust because it was cut with a butter knife or something. Then I wanted to get a different pizza and called back and was only given the option to get $10 off my next one or to get another BBQ chicken. Despite my effort to explain to the employee I couldn't eat the pizza and I just wanted to get a traditional one I was told I could only get another BBQ chicken. I paid for an item to be added to my specialty pizza and they didn't add it. My bad- I should have checked. Normally square cut pizza doesn't bother me but..... who cuts a pizza into 2" squares. Sammy's does! The dipping sauce that comes with the garlic bread has very little flavor and almost a metallic finish. The pizza was pretty bland as well. All in all I just wasn't impressed. I didn't realize they had discounted their lunch buffet and walked in and seated myself. I waited 10 minutes and decided to go up and help myself. Once I got my lettuce salad and 4 tiny pieces of pizza I realized it was a private party. Might have been the worst customer service we've ever had at a restaurant. We all ordered water to start. She brought one pitcher and 8 glasses of water, which allow us all about a 1/3 of a glass. We had to ask for more flag her down for for water after 20 minutes since she never stopped over to our table. We asked for the seltzer they advertise on the wall and on the table. She said they don't carry that. Asked if they had any other options, server was short and said no. After 45minutes waiting on 2 pizzas, we finally had to get up and ask where our order was. Our waitress was very argumentative and finally told us they messed up on one of our pizzas. So our other one was just sitting there at the counter (not under a warmer). No apologies. The waitress was very rude so instead of making our kiddos wait any longer we just asked for the pizza to go. She also told us they had a 2 hour delivery wait. Insinuating we should be patients. I told her if that were true, then when we were seated she should have mentioned it to us as we had 5 hungry little kids. We also caught her talking poorly about us, assuming we were "out-of-towners." Yes, it was our first time here, but due to the really poor service by the rude staff, we will not be returning, Also, when my husband brought up the issue to the owner all he cared about was "well how did the pizza taste?" Well, we couldn't enjoy it hot as the one was lukewarm when it arrived to our table and couldn't eat the other one until we got home. Owner was offended that we wouldn't rave about his pizza since he been in business for 70 years, yet he showed no care in the world that his waitress was incredibly rude. Sammy's is definitely a family tradition. My Grandparents have been coming here since the original Sammy's first opened. This is my favorite Sammy's location. Great thin-crust pizza cut in squares. Definitely a great place to stop when visiting Duluth. The pepperoni pizza is very good and so is the garlic cheese bread with marinara dipping sauce. The vegetables are generally crisp and fresh if you are in the mood to add some fresh peppers to your pizza. Quite a few people in my family would also recommend the beef and onion pizza.... which is good every once in awhile. Maybe order one of each and switch off between the two. read more

For $11 and some change it hurt a little inside, but the pizza looked good and the folks there were super nice. I waited for the pie to cool down before embarking on this Duluth classic. I was disappointed with the ultra thin crust. It was slightly doughy so I'm thinking it needed an extra minute or two. I grew up eating pizza from Sammy's... Always raving about it and craving it when I would be away from Duluth. If family was in town we would (and still do) without question go to Sammy's. It's great for big groups, pictures of beer, lots of pizza to share and they are always very helpful and friendly. Delivery lately hasn't been up to par though... (that's why they don't get 5 stars from me) many times they throw on way too much cheese, or the crust isn't quite right. I will say this isn't always the case though. Maybe 1 out of 4 times am I left a bit disappointed. But because I am a long time lover of Sammy's I will give it the benefit of the doubt (they have been more than excellent for most of my life), but if you can - I say go in and order a pizza at the restaurant. Best pizza I have ever had. Perfectly spiced sauce with delicious mozzarella cheese. The crust is what separates Sammy's from the pack. It is hand tossed right in front of you and then the crust is crimp folded. If you don't like thin-crust pizza, then this is not your place. I went to school in Duluth for several years and I have had hundreds of these pies. If your a tourist, don't even mess around with any other delivery options. The owners are the original Sammy's grandchildren. They are Italians that live and breathe pizza.
