I recently got married and my barber for last 10 years moved so when I was looking for a new barber to cut my hair not only for my upcoming wedding but for the next 10+ years, I was worried. A family member of mine recommended Sam and I couldn't be happier. He does a super clean job, is very friendly and a pleasure to visit for a fresh cut every few weeks. He does a great job at listening to what you want and recommends styles based on your features to best match your look. His location is really cool too. BEWARE!!! Been growing my hair out for a couple of years and I told the guy that I just wanted to clean up what I had. Some texture on my sides and just a little off the top. He repeated to me "just clean it up and a little off the top" Well "cleaning it up a little" to him was cutting close to 4 inches off!. I told him I wasn't expecting it that short and he's says "I only cut off an inch! I'm looking at my hair on the ground and pretty much everything was over 3 inches! I wouldn't as upset if it was a good short hairstyle but I now look like Kim Jong un but worse if that's possible. Can not do anything with my hair now. All that time growing my hair out and gone in a matter of 15 mins! I'm so bummed cause I have a work trip that I have to meet clients with. I've traveled all over the world and and I've gotten bad haircuts every once in a blue moon but they've always been manageable but this is so bad I almost think it's deliberate!! I posted some crappy before pics of me from a week before where it shows how long my hair was and then after. Update: I just woke up in a different state and when I saw myself in the mirror it was like NOT waking up from a bad dream. This is by far the worst haircut I've ever had in my life. I'd recommend ANY other place in Poway than this place. I cannot even express how livid I am. The bad pics I posted actually make it look better but trust me it's that bad. I just met with someone that works for me and they said "wow why did you cut your hair like that? Worse than Jim Carrey in dumb and dumber!" FML. read more

I've been to Sam's Barber shop twice now, both times Sam has cut my hair. After the second time, I don't think I'll be returning. My first visit to Sam's shop was great. I went on a Thursday so there was little wait time. There was a kid in front of me that seemed a little scared to get his hair done. I was impressed how Sam handled the situation. He was able to cut the kid's hair quickly and even topped it off with a little blue hair spray. The kid's mom was impressed with Sam and so was I. My hair cut was relatively uneventful, it all went well. I was so happy to have found a good barber close to home with reasonable prices. He even offers an excellent veteran discount! At that point I thought I'd start bringing my 1-year-old there for cuts too! My second visit was not anything like the first. I was the first customer of the day on a Thursday so the place was empty and there was no wait. I sit in Sam's chair and he asks what I want done. I don't get my hair cut often so I am usually unsure what length I want off until I sit in the chair. My hair is naturally curly so, to find how long the hair actually is, I pull it up in the front between my index and middle finger, like how barbers do when cutting. I decided it needed a 1/2 inch off the top and told this to Sam. He cuts the sides and back with a fade first. It looks good. He goes to the top and cuts off MAYBE a 1/8 inch. I pull my hair up in front again to see how long it is and ask for more off. This happens a third time and Sam is getting noticeably agitated. What am I supposed to do though? I asked for a 1/2 inch and he didn't cut it down a 1/2 inch. On the third pass he cuts the top much more aggressively with a comb and larger shears. In the end he probably took 1+ inches off. Because of the this, the fade on the sides looked off, sort of like my hair was mushroom shaped. I asked him to straighten it, i.e. the hair is straight up relative to the side of my head, top to bottom, like a military cut. I even motioned with my hand up and down the side of my head. I think he interpreted my statement to mean that I thought the sides were not straight relative to each other. He corrected the fade on the right side of my head, then I asked him to do the same on the left. I'm not sure if he didn't hear me or ignored me but he didn't cut the left side right away. I waited for a bit, then asked him if he was going to straighten the left side as well. This is when he became outwardly agitated with me. In the end, I think the cut came out OK although it is shorter than I wanted it and the sides-to-top ratio is a little off. We walk up to the cash register and I tell him bluntly that I don't know what happened this second visit because my first visit was so good. I asked him if he was in a bad mood or something. At that point he tells me his side of the story. Basically, he was offended that I asked him to cut the top of my hair three times because it made him feel like he was doing something wrong. I tried to explain that I had asked for a 1/2 inch initially but he denied that I had done so. He said that I showed him how long I wanted it with my fingers, hence, the misunderstanding. He was watching what I was doing but not listening to my words. He continued, saying that I told him the sides of my hair weren't straight when they actually were. Of course, this is another misunderstanding. Like I said before, I meant "straight" relative to the side of my head, top to bottom. At the end of the conversation, he sarcastically shook my hand and said it was his fault. This makes me so sad and mad because I really wasn't trying to get him to admit fault and I knew he was a nice guy and a good barber based on my first visit. I just wish that he would have maintained his composure and just done what I had asked. I would've learned that I needed to be more clear with the visuals when asking for a specific length. Sam ended up not charging me. I think that was the right decision. As I walked out of the shop, Sam went into damage control mode and started chumming it up with the one other customer getting his hair cut by the another barber. read more
