I visited about a week ago and had an outstanding experience. The new ownership has done a fantastic job creating a welcoming atmosphere with a great ambiance that immediately stands out. The quality of the food and drinks was excellent, and you can tell they take pride in every detail. Well, this is a hidden little treasure worthy of seeking out! Tucked along the McT Trail in Edwardsville, it has clean, modern, sleek furnishings creating an intimate setting, cool old (1929 era?) music, nice outdoor dining patio... I was working in Illinois for the day so I was excited to stop by some spots on the STL Top 100 list that I don't usually have access to. I started my day at 1929 Pizza and Wine for their morning coffee service. I got an iced latte and orange pastry. Everything was fresh and delicious it was so hard to make a decision. I've only ever tried a pastry from this place and when I saw they had dinner I had to try. The food itself was super delicious!! Super unique items on the menu and you can tell the ingredients are quality. Everything was fresh!! It even smells amazing in there. Service was okay. No one was overly nice or anything. Our server was sweet and said she was new. There was only a few tables in there but felt like we were checked on so often that they almost wanted us to hurry up. We absolutely loved the restaurant. We came on a Friday evening and were able to get a nice table for two. We ordered the bruschetta which was amazing. The special salad of the evening was equally delicious. We shared the mushroom pizza and my husband had a light beer. The staff were so nice and it was clearly a team effort. New ownership is not the same as it was 3 weeks ago when we were recommended to visit. We were super excited to try 1929 pizza and wine, then we showed up. 530p on a Saturday and we were the only car in the parking lot. We were greeted by our server, who was nice. A well decorated interior, overall the inside presented a warmer welcome than the empty parking lot. The beverage menu we were given listed beers that were not available tap. Our table ordered a bottle of wine from their menu, only to be presented with two different options of a similar wine. When the drinks came out, we were disappointed to see stemless wine glasses. Maybe a personal opinion, but you have "wine" in your restaurant title, you ought to have stemmed wine glasses. We ordered an appetizer sampler which was a bread, ricotta, honey, olives, and head of garlic(stay tuned). We then ordered 4 different pizzas. The first pizza the puttanesca was loaded with toppings, but between the whole garlic cloves, capers, and whole olives, it was an over the top salty mess The second pizza the potato, was described by our server, "I asked myself if I was eating a potato chip or pizza." How can you back track from that order? When it showed up, it looked like a potato pizza, but whole cloves of garlic were underneath the potatoes. The third pizza was the pepperoni, this one should be pretty straight forward, however the greasy sloppy mess that came out had all of the toppings fall off when trying to get your pizza off the pan. The fourth pizza was their special, a vodka sauce with sopressata and provel che. This was the best looking pizza at the table. We were never asked about a dessert. On top of that our server did not ask us how we wanted our checks split, the hostess did(which is abnormal). When we asked for the bottle of wine and the appetizer to be split between the table, a second ticket was created to split those items instead of adding them to our original check. For the amount they are charging, there several better options in the immediate area. read more

The food is always quality. In fact, I am using them for my holiday catering! The owners and the team are kind and proud of what they have created. The ambience is modern and comfortable. There are specials. When we were there, the pizza special was chicken piccata. I do not normally like "weird" pizza toppings or sauces, but this is the one place where I will go out on a limb. The reviews for this restaurant are very mixed and I can see why. It totally depends on who you talk to if they are going to say something positive or negative. The atmosphere is a bit sterile and the service was... bizarre. Our waiter had a very dry personality and we honestly couldn't tell if he was joking or serious a few times. My friend asked for a side of marina sauce to which he promptly and confidently replied "No." Lol. He then explained that their marinara is "raw" before being cooked in a pasta or pizza so he couldn't serve it to him. I'm still a little confused about that one. The sharing platter was decent, but honestly not super flavorful. My fiancé got the lasagna, which was good. We got the Philly cheesesteak and mushroom pizzas and they were both honestly very good. They were the highlight of the meal, but took an extraordinarily long time to come out- probably just over an hour. So, overall, the pizza was good, but not good enough to make me change from my other very frequented local pizza spot. The crust is crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside, which is nice. They also charged me $4 for a side of ranch, which is insane. The ranch was also not very flavorful and again did not meet my expectations compared to where we normally go. So, I likely won't be going back considering there are better options close by. read more

Discovered and went for a date night. I love this concept & hope it is a success! We shared Ricotta & Honey small plate (it was sooo good!) & the Meatball pizza. The pizza was great - the dough is awesome & the ingredients were fresh. Some of the wine by the glass weren't available, and all were red(my preference). Settled on the Tuscan Red, that went well with our meal. I love the space and environment. Not super busy for Sat evening, but also didn't realize they were there. Would recommend maybe offering wine flights or adding at least 1 offering by the glass in each section that is a bit more obscure, not a typical offering, maybe a Muscadet or Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.. there are some impressive Bottles in the offerings. We are definitely going to make it back here. Could give another certain pizza place a run for their money.. read more

We discovered 1929 Pizza and Wine about four years ago, so it's well-known to us. Last year, the owners moved it to Edwardsville, so the location was new, but easy to find. Have taken out of town family there twice. This is an unhurried, personal experience. You will probably meet the owner/chef/husband, who is happy to stop and talk, at length. In our case, one of us had MANY questions about the ins and outs of sourdough. No problem! And this has been so every time we've gone. The owners chose the converted-garage aesthetic, with the oven in the same space. You can watch his spouse making pizza while you wait. I think of this as a foodie restaurant: the founder is a sourdough bread guy who has a pretty focused menu, but who somehow has created a pretty good variety of starters. Their pizzas probably fit the Neapolitan concept of pizza most closely. There are a lot of toppings, so the pizza has a softish center. They are substantial enough thatone becomes a two-meal affair, at least for me. For reheating, I've had the best luck using a hot skillet at home. One anecdote: I left my favorite hoodie behind on my chair. The owner rushed out, holding it, saying: "somebody left this!" That hoodie could have been gone forever. Thanks. read more

My wife and I went here for my birthday celebration and it was great. We ordered the sharable plate which included different types of cheeses, spreads and olives. For our meal we ordered a Caesar salad to share and the mushroom pizza. The salad was big enough for two people. The pizza was incredible. Wood fired dough made in house, perfect level of crisp. The cream sauce was perfectly seasoned, nothing on the pizza was too strong or overpowered the other ingredients. The atmosphere was pretty laid back, your normal middle to upscale restaurant. We also got a bottle of their Malbec, delicious pairing with the mushroom pizza surprisingly. First visit to Matt and Amy's new location in Edwardsville! Although the location is new, the amazing food, warm atmosphere, friendly and attentive service are EXACTLY the same--perfect! We started with salads and bread. The bread is house made as is the butter--3 kinds! The salads are generously sized and super. The Star is Amy's pizza! Wow !! You can't go wrong!
