My wife and I have stayed here many times and we always have enjoyed it. This is an historic hotel in an historic town. Walking distance to everywhere you want to go. Yes, the place may not be sound proofed and there is no elevator but it only has three floors and if you are lucky, you can book a room overlooking the square. I like it because all the rooms are unique, as are the persons working the front desk. It is old school but it is awesome. Just wish they would bring back the wine hours in the afternoon...location is key if you want to expereince this historic town square. read more

We paid in full through a 3rd party and I showed up with my family (including my 11 year old) to be sent away. They had availability but the owner wanted to take advantage of the desperation of no hotel and charge double. Clearly there is no love for their customers and all about trying to make more money. I never leave reviews, good or bad, but I couldn't let this slide through the cracks without telling our story and keep a good conscience. DO NOT BOOK YOUR SONOMA STAY AT THIS HOTEL! They kicked my family to the curb even after showing the older lady with glasses at the counter our confirmation number. She incessantly told us it was not her problem, or the hotel's for that matter, that our reservation had been cancelled on their side of things. Our card was charged, we had a confirmation number, and no refund was ever issued. This lady then had the nerve to offer us a vacant room at double the price. She said "I mean it is Friday night in Sonoma". I almost lost my shit. But I took a deep breath, gathered my family together, and said thank you. Thank you Universe for keeping me and my family from supporting such a business... one that could care less if children are stuck on the streets of Sonoma without a roof over their heads. One that blames the customer for the issue instead of attempting to solve the problem amicably. One that would try to charge our card double the agreed upon price, instead of honoring the agreement that we've already committed to and have the documentation for. Perfect location. Nice staff. Cute room. Amazing water pressure in the shower. Sometimes spotty wifi. All amenities: shampoo, conditioner, lotion, soap, towels, glasses, water bottles, hair dryer, iron and board, tv, a/c and ceiling fan. Great artifacts all over from "Wild West." Authentic feel to hotel from late 1800's. Parking on the side street was never a problem and we could leave the car all day and overnight. Room 23 on second floor. Not difficult to carry luggage up since there's no elevator. Reasonably priced for area and we walked around to all the shops etc around the square easily. Drove to and from local wineries - Buena Vista was especially lovely. Would absolutely stay when in Sonoma again !! read more

Please ignore these ridiculous 1-star reviews, If you need your ass kissed by the front desk, this may not be for you, but if you love cleanliness, easy booking, and consistency, this is your place. Stay anywhere near the Sonoma plaza, and you'll see that this Hotel has EXCELLENT VALUE and CHARM. It can be scorching hot in Sonoma; this place has the best air conditioning, Ice cold; my partner never wanted to leave, lol. A group of us stayed for a wedding party, and everything worked fantastically. However, several of us stayed in different hotels around Sonoma and viewed each other's rooms. Most of the other 4-5 star hotels around the square had grime around the sinks, the air conditioners were sub-par, and it didn't smell as clean as Sonoma Hotel. Some of the wedding party checked out and came over to the Sonoma Hotel!! The one great perk of staying here; the sheets are immaculate and smell clean but not too perfumy. The bathrooms are spotless; the towels are fresh. We always notice someone is cleaning the hotel. It does have carpet, and they are always cleaning it, but bring your flip-flops if you don't like carpet. Complimentary bottled water is always available near the front desk at all hours of the night. Internet worked great, and it's free. We also love it's close to everything, book ahead. A wonderful place for staying in downtown Sonoma. It's almost like a Victorian home with a lot of different rooms in it. The outside isn't much to look out at, since it's on the street, however inside it's charming and the location with the girl and the fig right next to it is great because that's a wonderful restaurant. If you're coming up for a weekend or a few days trip, I would recommend this place so that you can check out the local offerings more easily. I've stayed twice now, once last spring, and again this weekend and have been happy with both of the times. read more

If you want to immerse yourself in the town of Sonoma, totally disconnect from technology, and have a modest dosage of last century living, Sonoma Hotel is a great lodging choice for you and family. The hotel is conveniently located in the town center and has easy access to fine dining and boutique shopping areas. The hotel has so many delightful architectural and decorative details that magically transform each person stepping into this space to an era prior to internet, or smart phones. From the wash basin in the room, decorative objects in the hallways, to the wooden windows facing the town streets, all of which invites guests to explore and to experience. Since we visited during the holidays, the decorated Christmas tree, garlands, and the fireplace added so much charm to the place. Our teen daughter enjoyed the stay, particularly with the twin sofa bed in the cozy loft. It afforded her privacy and quietness to read a book or look out of the window people watching, just to share several details of the stay. There is street parking for the overnight guests. Each room has a set of keys to access vs. a swipe in front of a card reader. Guests must make sure to drop off their room keys in the front desk when checking out. The wi-fi passcode provided did not work during our stay. It didn't bother us since we planned to totally disconnect. read more

I was wary of staying here after reading other yelp reviews, but forged ahead due to lack of alternative options over Memorial Day weekend and had a perfectly fine stay! This location is super convenient, the room was clean and spacious. The bed wasn't the coziest hotel I've ever slept in, but it wasn't uncomfortable, just to Westin level comfort. We stayed on the 3rd floor which I think was wise, I can tell sound travels and can imagine being on the second floor you might hear sound from upstairs neighbors. They do have double windows so noise from the restaurant was not an issue. read more

First the good. Great location, right on the town square. We also dined at a great French restaurant which is connected to the hotel, called the "girl and the fig." Now the bad. The customer service was pathetic. The old lady who checked us in, had a scowl on her face, and couldn't have been any less welcoming. She basically gave us the key to the room and offered NO additional information about the hotel or town square. We stayed one night, which was a blessing, because they were doing construction in the restaurant, which woke us up at 5am due to the loud, constant hammering. No heads up was ever given to us regarding the work or noise. The old gal who checked us out, also had a scowl on her face, and couldn't have been less interested in finding out how our stay was. She asked how I would like to receive my receipt, and I said by email. She said, "sorry, I can't do that because you booked through a third party, and your email will have your name plus a Singapore address attached to it, or something like that." I had no idea what she was saying, so I just said, "print it." Even though this is a vintage property lacking in amenities (I would not recommend it for kids) you would think the two front desk people would at least make an effort to pretend they care about the guests (especially during this pandemic)!!! Again, the location and restaurant carry this place, not the two individuals running the front desk. The ONE STAR I gave the Sonoma Hotel is solely based on the sour attitude displayed by the two gals covering the front desk and the construction noise. I DO NOT recommend this property. Find something else where employees understand the meaning of hospitality and a smile. It was painfully obvious that the two gals at this place don't grasp this concept. I'm not sure whether or not they own this hotel, but if they do, shame on both of them even more. Clearly, these two old gals need to RETIRE, and get out of the service/people business!!!!!!! The Sonoma Hotel is the perfect little vintage hotel... historic, quaint, with really cute charm. Just below the hotel and next to the lobby is The Girl and the Fig restaurant, which is always bustling. But this cute place is still pretty quiet and casual. The décor is antique and old pictures throughout which shows the changes over the years of the hotel itself. Our room was amazing, right at the corner of Spain and First Street, in other words - OVERLOOKING the entire corner of the Sonoma Plaza. This room was their smaller room, but we didn't care, views out both sides of the room! The location is amazing! Let me also add that the staff was kind and gracious. They were very helpful with our room and answering questions. In the morning, they set out coffee, pastries, and juice to get you started. The pastries are delicious!!! They also have a complimentary happy hour in the lobby in the evening. The hotel is historic (pretty old) but its really cute inside and out, and is the perfect little hotel... pleasant staff, nice room and the location is unbeatable. I would certainly stay here again. Right when you walk in the place smells like mold. Disappointing but understandable since the place is pretty old. Go to check in and the lady asks me what card I wanted to be charged for my room. I told her I had already been charged online. She told me I was not charged and looked at me like I was stupid. I told her I could show her my bank account and she was a smart ass and said "yea, go ahead and pull that up" I showed her it had been taken out and she said she needed to call the owner. She looked flustered and had some convo on the phone with him and got off the phone and said ok he authorized it. Like what the hell are you talking about lady? No apology for wasting my time or for her misunderstanding, no warm welcome. It was clear she was pissed I was right and she was wrong. The room was small but decent. Some out the outlets didn't work and the shower was not draining properly. Overall it was just ok. Wouldn't stay here again. Oh, and tell that staff to get off her phone! She was constantly scrolling through it every time we walked by! Maybe if she wasn't so distracted she would know what was going on. read more

What a cute hotel! My husband and I stayed here with our little five month old baby and the hotel staff was amazing. We stayed in the room on the first level which I think is a handicap accessible hotel room. It was roomy, quaint and super perfect for us. The bathroom was also pretty large and the accommadations were perfect for our little weekend getaway. They also served complimentary wine and had a small continental breakfast in the morning (pastries, orange juice and coffee). Parking can be tricky, you have to find street parking but we were lucky and snagged a spot close by. Some people may or may not be bothered by the noise level. Our room was pretty close to the "Girl and the Fig" restaurant so if you're a light sleeper, you may or may not tolerate it. We were fine and didn't mind it at all. Overall, a great little hotel. An old and somewhat charming hotel that is a historical element of the olden days of California. It's situated right on the Square in downtown Sonoma. I guess the reason why I gave this only three stars is I'm used to staying in hotels that are a little bit more modern. You can't beat the location. However I would advise not having a room that faces the main square because it can get kind of noisy there on a Saturday night. Write down below is girl and the fig which is a fun restaurant to try. To start, let me say that the staff are very gracious, and cared about us and our unique circumstance (we were evacuated from the fires around Sonoma). The rooms are old fashioned, very small and rather funky, with some issues: our bathroom fan was broken, there are not enough electric outlets, the shower handle was loose and the shower doors did not function well, the internet is painfully slow, etc. You can also hear everyone coming and going and our neighbors undoubtedly heard us too. Different rooms have different furniture and different layout - in some you can't watch TV while in bed. The backboards, BTW, are decorated iron and decidedly uncomfortable to lean against. They do offer coffee and pastries downstairs in the morning, which is nice, but how about some non-dairy creamer for the 1/3 of the population which is lactose intolerant? (And some to-go cups maybe?) Being a retired firefighter, I also had big issues with the open wooden staircase and never was really sure where the fire escape was. (Through the laundry room? This is not well marked, and I only found the pamphlet in the rooms which details this as I was cleaning out our clothing from the closet when we left.) I'm pleased that this hotel has historic status, but that really doesn't enter into the equation for me about value versus cost. The cost here is high, and the value simple isn't there. read more

If you want the experience of a big standard corporate hotel with all the amenities, this is not your place. This isn't even your place if you want an upscale boutique hotel. This isn't really luxurious. That said, the location is terrific and if you want the feeling that you have gone back in time, with all the charm and the occasional inconvenience that implies, this is your hotel. Some examples of the good and the not so good. The good first: The first time we stayed we had to leave very early on a Sunday morning. I mentioned that to the desk person and she said to just leave our room key in the basket on the desk (not exactly 21st century but in a nice way). When we came down around 6 AM the person in the kitchen said that she'd heart there would be an early departure so she had put the coffee and pastries out extra early to make sure we had them before we hit the road. She had also started the fireplace. So we drank our coffee and enjoyed the Christmas lights on the square in the early morning as the town slowly woke up. No traffic, a few people heading to work in restaurants and hotels. You could almost believe it was a hundred years ago. The not so good: The second time we stayed there the person in the room above ours neglected to read the instructions and took a shower without tucking in the shower curtain. That caused a leak in our bathroom which messed up my travel case and some of my cosmetics. I dashed down to the front desk and the person on the night shift ran up to stop the leak, but never came back to our room, leaving me to clean up the mess. It took a few phone calls to connect with the owner, but he gave us a discount that covered my small losses and I thought that was fair. So the other side of the coin. I can't say that the desk person was rude, but she wasn't super competent and she didn't have the authority to make things right on the spot. So like I said, this isn't the Hyatt or the Westin or the Marriott, and it certainly isn't the Oberoi. But it has its own charms. We're planning to stay there again on our annual visit to Sonoma. There's something a bit magical about a very old hotel and the experience of stepping back in time. read more

My girlfriend and I recently stayed here. It is a very cozy hotel with an amazing staff who are knowledgeable, friendly and go out there way to help the guest. Kirsten was at the front desk for most of our stay and gave us her umbrella to use all day. That's service. The hotel is old and the TV is not a flat screen but for us that is no big deal. It is well kept and clean and the old style has a charm that modern hotels just can't match. The restaurant next door is awesome and the tasting rooms around the square were great. If you stay here there is no need to use a car you can just walk around and have a great weekend. Highly recommended. read more

I'm torn on this one. While the front desk ladies we encountered during our weekend stay were pretty friendly, the overall experience left a lot to be desired. Granted there's a bit of small town charm going on, at $545 for two nights, I was hoping that I wouldn't have to carry our luggage up three flights of stairs, have at least a queen-sized bed, enjoy a shower area that was larger than my own at home, and not have paper-thin walls. On Sunday, I called for an hour later check-out and the woman told me that, no that probably wouldn't be possible, sort of in a smarmy tone. Not that big a deal, I suppose, but with a check-out at 11am, there's goes that neighborly, unrushed feeling. Big plus is that they're connected to the Girl & The Fig, which is a super restaurant but also a convivial spot to enjoy some cocktails well into the night, as we found out for ourselves. They also offer a complimentary breakfast (coffee, juice, pastries) from 8-9am, and there's also a complimentary wine happy hour, I think from 5-7pm or thereabouts. read more

I decided to stay here with a few friends a couple months back when they came out of town for a wine visit. Even though I lived so close, I love the town of Sonoma so we decided to stay here. While the Hotel has beautiful decor and the location is great, their staff was rude- one particular female concierge at the front desk was unprofessional and unaccommodating and should not be in the business of hospitality. Sonoma Hotel was my only option when i was trying to book last minute reservations for one night only. Most hotels required 2 nights minimum... everything else was booked. When i was making the reservation - i explained that i didn't need any frills - i was in town for a wedding and didn't need the spa/gardens/bells & whistles... just a bed and a bathroom. I asked if there were any other hotels that might have been cheaper than theirs... And she actually gave me some suggestions! but none of the other people at the reservation desks were as nice, and since the prices were comparable, I returned my call to Sonoma Hotel and booked the room. It's charming and old - but clean and comfortable. the funny thing about the room - we had a bathroom with a claw-foot tub... but the sink & mirror were in a corner in the bedroom, not the bathroom. I tried to draw a bath at around 2 in the afternoon, and the water barely came out tepid... however the next morning when i was showering, the water was good and hot. I didn't have the breakfast or the complementary wine during happy hour - but it was nice to know they offered it. I'd stay here again... read more

The Sonoma Hotel trades on its historical value and does it well. I love the place so much, we stay here every time we stay for the Sonoma Valley Film Festival. The rooms are comfy, the staff nice (possibly becuase they remember us every year) and the free wine in the afternoon and pastries, coffee and juice in the morning is a nice touch. Most of the rooms are kinda small, but that's to be expected. The only room I don't like is the one with the bathroom in the hallway outside of the room. I know that's how most places were in eariler days, and many places in Europe are, but I'm used to being able to pop into the bathroom in my jammies without having to worry about other folks. The best rooms are the ones with the fold-out couches. We had four people in one and it was very comfy. The shower was nice, though the rooms with bathtubs are nicer. The place is located right next to The Girl and the Fig, which means there's a bit of noise if you're on the Northern side of the building at night The rooms on the Eastern Side look out over th garden of the Castle Winery tasting room, which is my fave in Sonoma for Ports. The whole feeling is awesome and the reports of ghosts in one of the halls and rooms seem to be over-stated, though the entire place does have a certain creepy feeling in the dead of night. read more

While I can appreciate the notion of quaint ambiance and historic charm, I cannot find the smallest bit of luxury in a musky, dirty old hotel room that has not been updated for the past 100 years. Not only was the hotel dirty and antiquated, it was ridiculously priced at $260 a night with a two night minimum. No thanks! I stayed here for a wedding recently and I was not impressed. The staff was less than friendly and some of them were kinda rude. The room was tiny and the sink was clogged and constantly dripped. Sonoma Hotel was excellent. It's right on the square so you are a stones throw away from just about everything in Sonoma proper (which admittedly isn't all that much ). Even though this is a "hotel" it has the quaintness of a B&B. We didn't arrive until about 1:30 AM and had to wake the poor innkeeper up to let us in. Very friendly and helpful staff and the rooms are nice. We reserved all of our cash for this trip to spend on wine so ended up staying in a TINY room but it was fine enough. The girl and the fig restaurant is right downstairs - separate review for that, but I'll just say that that it is a great asset to share a space with them. How can you go wrong by staying in a hotel/ former 1880's concert venue / historical landmark? I don't really know. Expect a bit of a musty smell, it's, like, old. The rooms aren't huge. DOn't expect king sized beds, and room service -- the Sonoma Hotel isn't the Hyatt. The restaurant, the Girl and the Fig is right downstairs- delicious! The Sonoma Hotel is the kind of place you stay in when you're looking for 1800 charm. The place is filled with artifacts from that era. The rooms are small, typical of the 1800's for the average person. It actually is a kick for one night, but hubby and I wouldn't stay longer than that. It's not meant to be fancy. We found the staff to be friendly, but we were not in need of help of any kind. The room was very clean, the bathroom up to date, the queen size bed comfortable, and we had a small television set with cable. If you don't want to hear the chatter of the "Girl and the Fig" restaurant next door, don't get a room next to it. The restaurant has outside seating with lots of customers. read more

UPDATE 03.09.2008 If stairs are an issue for you or your guests, I would recommend a more modern place. The owners keep to the historic building code. Charming for a quick stay where you may not be in your room long or where you won't be moving from your room too much. A historical landmark, that encases the Girl and The Fig restaurant in its belly, it's a charming, old hotel on the corner of West Spain Street & 1st Street West (across from El Dorado Hotel/Kitchen/Kitchenette. Comfortable rooms, but the type of hotel better for blocking off to house friends and family rather than stay as a tourist. If you are expecting upscale, I would recommend somewhere more formal like Gaige House Inn in Glen Ellen or Macarthur Place just south of the town square on the Broadway/12. And if you want peace and quiet, you shouldn't be staying anywhere on the town square. This is more old town charm with all of the aches and pains and bustling about that go with an historic area. Definitely felt like time travel when we stepped inside the doors of the Sonoma Hotel, and there's nothing wrong with that! We each got a room, and they happened to have two right next to each other. The lady at check-in was great, and let us look at the rooms before we decided to take them. Loved the old furnishings in the rooms, and the bathtub with claw feet! Free wine in the afternoon, free breakfast in the morning. It was a great location too... walking distance to everything in the main square of Sonoma. Although, we didn't go far... had dinner at the Girl and the Fig, which is in the same building. However... the walls/floors/ceilings are indeed paper thin (as many other reviewers have mentioned). I didn't notice it at night (because I was drunk) but the next morning, I heard all my neighbors showers starting at around 6am. Not a pleasant thing for my aching head. The Sonoma Hotel is old and charming and cozy and entirely lovely. We stayed here on our honeymoon and found it enchanting. Our room was the first room at the top of the first flight of stairs. It was on the southeast corner of the building and overlooked the city square. It is a small room with a full bed. The room only allowed for a few feet of clearance around the bed. The bathroom had a large claw-foot bathtub. And though the water pressure was poor, it was good enough for us. The hotel's convenient location let us walk to all sorts of fun places around the square without having to worry about parking. And when there are so many great places to visit around me, I don't need a big luxurious hotel suite with premium cable and wifi. All I need is a clean, comfortable, friendly place to lay my head down at night and the Sonoma Hotel is just that. read more

My review is mixed. On the plus side: Small -town charm, historical setting, right on the Square. Under $200/night, with no 2-night minimum (like many Sonoma hotels). Complimentary continental Breakfast in the morning, and free wine Happy Hour in the afternoon. Attached to the amazing The Girl & the Fig Restaurant. Right across from El Dorado Kitchen, another great restaurant. Now on the minus side: Really small rooms. Right on the Square (while a plus for convenience, it gets MIGHTY loud at night with people pouring out of bars & restaurants, as well as the locals honking & drag-racing). Paper-thin walls (meaning you can hear all sorts of conversations, TV programs, etc.) Also, our room had a very odd layout. We must have had the same room as Sharon E: clean and comfortable, but the sink & mirror were in a corner in the bedroom, not the bathroom. It was just bizarre. While the bathroom was small, they could have fit a tiny corner sink in there (and I know, because I've remodeled my folks' guest bath before). I tried to peek in a couple of other rooms as we were checking out (on the non-street side) and those rooms did not seem to have this same issue. I highly doubt we'll stay here again, unless we can't find another place without a 2-night minimum. For us, that was a big draw. read more

This is a review of the Sonoma Hotel's "cottage". It's a converted artist's studio on the grounds of a beautiful 100 year old home just off of Sonoma Plaza. The grounds are beautiful and it's very well located. The owner is a great guy and pays a lot of attention to the property. If you are looking for something quaint and not too fancy it's a great choice. The only concern I have is the heater/AC system seems to get a bit overwhelmed when it gets hot up there, and it had a hard time keeping us warm at night, although the owner came over and set up a small radiant heater and eventually it warmed up. As long as the temperature is moderate this is a really unique little spot that I really enjoyed...the first time I stayed here the Hotel staff were pretty bad, but this time everyone was really nice. Rustic? Definitely. Historic? Probably. I've come to understand that rustic generally means "no elevator" and historic generally means "a pronounced lack of modern amenities." I can handle that. First impression - my sister and I entered the lobby, dragging two 50 pound suitcases (we'd come off a short cruise) which we were told to put in the corner. The woman at the desk didn't ask our names and when we offered them, told us it wasn't necessary. No "hello," no "my, that's a lot of luggage." Just, "come back at 2:00 and your room will be ready." OK. Not the warmest of welcomes but we weren't expecting a parade or anything. After wandering the square and sampling the local libations, we returned and I took the first good look at the lobby. Very quaint and charming. A truly lovely old building. We checked in, prepaying for our two (not inexpensive) nights and while the (different) lady was processing our paperwork, I noticed, and commented on, something about a one hour wine reception each night. Then, and only then, did she mention that there was complimentary wine thing from 5 to 6 in the lobby each evening. Sis then asked about the complimentary breakfast and we were given the pertinent stats. None of this would have been imparted to us if we hadn't prompted it. We asked if we had to carry our bags up the stairs and the answer was, "we don't have an elevator." Not quite what I asked but it got the point across. We went to the room to deposit purses and coats and gear up to bounce the luggage upstairs and were pleasantly surprised to find that a nice gentleman (owner?) was bringing them up. (Kudos for that!) He also helped us get into the room as the key required some special dance moves even though the door appeared not to be locked at all. (There was a 3/4 inch wide gap between the door and door jamb.) Once in the room, we saw that the online pics did justice. We had a "one queen, one twin" room and it was cute. A tad small but totally doable. The bathroom had a beautiful clawfoot tub with a rainshower showerhead (which I've always found to be completely unworkable) but I was impressed with this one. Good water pressure and a pleasant experience overall. The sink had some serious erosion and since it doesn't appear to be an original piece (although I could be wrong) I would replace it if I were in charge. We went out to cruise around and wandered back at 5 for the wine hour. Yet a third desk lady failed to greet us and when we said we'd come back for the wine said, "good." It was two minutes to 5 and there was a half bottle of sweating white wine getting warm on the counter next to some glasses. We weren't sure if an alarm would go off if we made a move before the clock struck the hour so we sat and waited for further instructions. She never said, "help yourselves" or "let me get you some wine" so after about five minutes (and we were the only ones there), we got up and left. Didn't seem to bother her a bit. That night we learned of another unadvertised perk. The beds are not just beds, but musical instruments. So are the floors. We were on the second floor which seemed to be woodwinds and string instruments and I think the third floor was the bass and horn section. I'd say the place was half full and the beds seemed to be playing a somewhat exhuberant Bach Concerto the first night. By Day Two, when they were ¾ full, it was a full blown Tchaikovsky extravaganza, complete with cymbals and cannons. Every time any neighbor rolled over, music happened. Let me just say, I do not want to be at this hotel when there is a honeymoon couple anywhere in the vicinity. For most of the first day we thought the room didn't have a TV (no problem at all) but eventually opened the top cabinet of a small dresser and found a quaint 12" that I'm sure would do the job. Rustic? Check. Day Two was much more of the same. Bottom line -- clean, cute, RUSTIC, no elevator, no in-room safes, dodgy door locks, no guarantee of luggage help (we bounced our own down the stairs.) But by far my biggest issue was - no smiles, no greetings, no welcomes, no happy to have yous, no thanks for comings, no have a nice trips, no come agains. Then again, maybe they don't need to. They've got LOCATION. And musicality. A LOT of musicality. read more
