An old buddy wanted to meet up for lunch, so I took him down to Smash'd, and it did not disappoint…read more This little Bar & Grill might fly under the radar, but it delivers big flavor. They've got a solid lineup of burgers on the menu, but I was there for one thing, their Philly cheesesteaks. We both ordered the fully loaded version with fajita peppers and a side of crispy tots. The sandwich was stacked, flavorful, and cooked just right, easily one of the better cheesesteaks you'll find around here. If you're looking for great burgers and even better cheesesteaks, Smash'd is absolutely your spot. Friendly service, good portions, and a menu that hits the mark. Highly recommend checking it out.

I've had this place bookmarked a while. It's on my "best burgers in SAT" list…read more Going in the door, let me just tell you: don't bother parking right across the street. Yeah, okay, it's convenient, but by the time you pay to park (minimum of four hours, which pissed me off) and then have your tiny, overpriced burger...you gonna be mad. Do yourself a favor and fight for street parking. I walked up to the outside counter Saturday night about 7:20. Never been here. The ladies behind the counter obviously could NOT have cared less. No nice welcome...no pleasantries. Nothing said. I spoke first, asking about seating availability inside (it was chilly), and they were rude - looked at me like I was from outer space and said they didn't know. They said they didn't know in that "yeah, good luck with that...it's Saturday at 7, dumbass" kinda way. How could you not know? And if you truly didn't know, which one of them should have gone to check for me. So I went and checked myself. Turns out: plenty of seating. Returned to the chilly duo and placed my order. Ordered the Wake and Bacon burger. I also ordered a Topo Chico, which was also met with a blank "are you from this planet?" stare. How do you not have Topo Chico or something similar !? The burger was just okay. Tiny, but tasty. Fries were so salty and over-seasoned as to be almost inedible. No one checked on me after bringing me my burger. Not one time. The only reason I gave the third star: neat, dog friendly outside area which would be cool for a group outing. Probably not going back.

The outdoor patio open and rooming with a very large tree providing strategic shade. I look over their drink menu and order my standard Bulleit Rye Old Fashioned which is one of their "Classic Cocktails" on their menu. Our waitress was super friendly and stopped to chat with us more than once to make sure we were taken care of. My Old Fashioned came out and it was made well. Not too sweet or too much bitters....just right. Overall, I really enjoyed the evening on the patio and have to remember to stop here more often. Next time it will be for lunch to get a great burger.

I've been going to Bays for over 50 years, and always had a good experience, until my last visit…read moretwo weeks ago. The menu has changed, NOT for the better. First of all, they no longer offer chips and salsa! Margaritas and chips and salsa are the binge food of most San Antonians, but not at Bays anymore! Also, goodbye to Scotch eggs. The nachos, which used to be a glorious gathering of refried beans and cheese, are now tiny chips with strange black beans scattered over them and lightly topped with some unidentified cheese. Barely edible. Thank God they didn't mess with the chili, although when I asked for chips with my chili, I was told there were none. The nachos were made with chips, but I couldn't get any for my chili. I then asked for crackers, expecting at least some saltines. Nope, I got wheat thins. And the frozen margaritas are now snowcones. If there is tequila in them, I couldn't taste it. Our server kept claiming he was "new" so he couldn't answer our questions about the menu changes. But he was quick to point out that he worked for tips when he brought us the check. All in all, this was a VERY disappointing experience. Whoever is running Bays now has badly missed the mark on practically everything that made Bombay Bicycle Club what it once was. And that is so very sad.
