If you have extra blankets or towels that are in good condition, but you don't need them anymore, bring them here. They can always use them for the fur babies. I brought in a couple of boxes of blankets, sheets & towels for them to use for the babies, plus a dog carrier I'm no longer in need of in my life. As I continue to unpack, I'll bring more. I also brought a bag of food & dog treats. The hardest thing for me is to not adopt all the puppers. Adopt don't go to breeders. Even my pure bred Frenchie is from a rescue. I had no idea since her record was clean and of course there was no sympathy or reimbursement when I called multiple times and sent multiple emails. read more

I hate to give this place such a bad review, but I'm just being honest. I fostered a kitten from SAPA, and they did not tell me his FELV test was inconclusive--they simply said to keep him separated from my cat for one week and then everything would be fine. He spent about three weeks around my cat before one of his (numerous) appointments. He tested positive for FELV, which is contagious. The only way I found this out was from an email with medical records, which I happened to read carefully. No one pointed it out, no one explained anything, no one apologized for their poor communication, and I received VERY conflicting information about the severity of the disease and its communicability. Needless to say, I got my own cat tested, and she was fine. No chance of getting the test paid for. Also, when the foster kitten fell from a chair and hurt his leg, I called and emailed to get an appointment--NO response whatsoever. I spent $400 taking him to the vet, which they of course would not consider reimbursing. Again, no apology or explanation whatsoever. The young women at the clinic on Marbach were nice and friendly, but this is a very unprofessional, indifferent, and thoroughly unhelpful organization. I admire their mission, but they are absolutely HORRIBLE at it. I feel bad for the animals who will certainly have a miserable fate since they were unlucky enough to fall into the hands of SAPA. Do yourself a favor and go to ANY other rescue/foster service. I have spent well over $1000 on this cat--I have now adopted him because I don't trust SAPA to care for him in any way--and they have ZERO appreciation or gratitude. Very, very, very sad for anyone who wants to help defenseless critters, and far, far worse for the animals themselves. read more

I recently adopted a pitbull puppy through SAPA, while I love what they stand for and have personally seen the positive impact they have had on animals lives... the process for adoption can be a tricky one, especially for first time pet owners. If you do decide to adopt with them just know emailing is better than calling, if your animal is not neutered/spayed SAPA legally must have the procedure done before you adopt, and finalizing and the paperwork to receive the depot $ back won't be overnight. I feel divided writing this review. I think it is awesome that they try to save animals, but it is easier to do so when you don't push away adoptive families. I went to Petco this weekend and found a sweet puppy that our family loved and was in a line to adopt her. The line is not my problem. I think it is great that so many animals found their homes. My problem is the person that I assume was running the event. She was just rude. The way she spoke to person after person. She would turn around and talk with some of the other people in the purple shirts like hers and it was like she would laugh at the people adopting animals and even certain people we had learned were foster families, while walking around looking at the dogs. Talking to those families my husband and I had talked about fostering in the future and there is NO way I would put up with someone treating me like that. We got to the point of second in line and handed the puppy back to the foster family, we could see their disappointment, knowing they wanted to see her go to the right family. The whole situation just didn't make me feel comfortable, or like this was the right choice for us. This is hurting us, and partly we are wondering if we made the wrong choice because we loved her. We just refuse to be treated like that. It is one thing to make sure someone understands how to raise a dog. That makes sense. Treating people like they are below you, that is a complete other thing. read more

I adopted two animals through Pet's Alive, one dog (7 months at the time of adoption) and another dog (4 months at the time of adoption). I paid $175 for the dog that was 7 months old and $200 for the dog that was 4 months old. Pet's alive have their prices publicly displayed, I've posted the photo below so as you can see I over paid for the dog of 7 months. When I returned to the location to ask why I was overcharged, it didn't really seem like anyone had an answer until a woman said "he was cute so we marked his price up" and that's the ONLY explanation that I was given. I wasn't able to get a better answer nor was I given the option to get the money back that they overcharged me. They also don't answer their phones or emails. read more

I noticed the other reviews on here and decided to leave one. All these "volunteers" complaining sound ridiculous. I adopted a puppy from SAPA 6 years ago and the experience was amazing. Everyone was really nice. Two years ago I adopted a kitten from here and again, I had a great experience. The application process was lengthy, just like it should be. I'm glad their not just handing over pets to random people. Everytime I've been there, they have been busy but they ALWAYS end up answering all my questions and really helping me through the process. If you're going to visit this place, you need to realize, you are not their priority all of the animals are! Come there with patience and an open mind. i appreciate and admire what Pets Alive organization is doing for rescuing Dogs and Cats . My issue is with the staff, I went to go look at a dog I fell in with on a picture advertisement on Facebook. When I arrived at the Facility on Monday I mentioned that I had called earlier that morning that I was very interested in adopting Princess Leu and they could not locate her for 30 minutes this is very unprofessional ! Turns out she was getting spayed and I could return on Tuesday to adopt her. The lady with tattoos and red hair promised me she would hold her for me to adopt her. I drove another 50 miles to adopt her to find out they let someone else adopt her . The same lady had the odesaty to lie to me and said I was calling the wrong number Tuesday morning to let them know I was on my . I called the number advised on your website. I'm very disappointed on how the staff is trained there ! I left there Heartbroken . I suffer from depression and anxiety and the staff there were unprofessional and lied to me . Such a wonderful organization. Making San Antonio better little by little. Being a transplant in San Antonio, I was astonished at how many stray dogs there are in San Antonio. From roaming on the streets, to being dead on the side of the road and piling up in shelters. From what I've gathered it is the culture down here- where people don't treat dogs with respect and responsibility. Basic lessons for dog owners: You should not be breeding dogs for money, you should be getting all your dogs neutered and spayed, you should vaccinate your dogs and you should know the commitment a dog is when you get them (and not throw them out when it gets too hard). SAPA however is such a wonderful organization, trying to rescue, foster out and adopt out so many innocent dogs. They do this on a budget of nothing! All donations. They provide medical care for all those dogs, food, love and a warm place to stay. They need and deserve all the help they can get! Both from cash donations, supplies (check their website- paper towels, toys, dog food, etc), and volunteers time. I know from personal experience how wonderful SAPA is. I fostered a sarcoptic mange puppy that ended up getting Parvo, with the help and supplies from SAPAs medical staff we were able to save the little guy! We have officially adopted him and are so lucky to have him in our lives! Thank you SAPA for everything you do for San Antonio and the innocent animals out there!!! read more

I don't even know where to begin and I wish I could go lower than one star. I signed up to be a SAPA volunteer foster parent a month back and just took in my first dog this last weekend. Before I went to pick up the dog, I was promised that I would receive a crate, bowls, food, leash, and collar. When I arrived on-site. I was told that there was no crate available for me. This was a huge issue as it was too late to buy a crate and I would be leaving for work too early to get one in the morning. I had no choice but to create a makeshift containment in my home and hope for the best. I came home for lunch to see three sets of blinds in my home completely destroyed. I got the email address for a manager by the name of Clare and explained to her my situation and that I would like help paying for the repairs. All she did was send me a screenshot of the part of the foster agreement where it says SAPA is not responsible for personal damage. I understand that this is in there to protect SAPA but she wouldn't even acknowledge that the damage was their fault! If the dog had a crate to be in, none of this would have happened. I even lowered by reimbursement ask to $100 but she refused to see that this was their fault! Not only did she completely butcher an important little thing called customer service, but their lack of crate caused a dog to be scared for its life for four straight hours. If this wasn't enough, the drop-off of the dog was also completely mishandled. I was told I could drop him off on Monday at 8 a.m. By 8:15, nobody was there to help me. I found a way into the back and asked a staffer for help. He immediately told me it wasn't his problem. As I was trying to explain my situation, he turned his back and walked away from me mid-sentence. Simply put, SAPA is an absolutely disgrace of a animal shelter. They clearly have no concern for their adopters, volunteers, or animals. There are so many other deserving rescues in San Antonio. Do yourself a favor and support one of them. SAPA needs a wake-up call and until that day comes, I hope everyone continues to stay away from this shameful business. read more

They take dogs and cats exclusively off the kill list at Animal Care Services. I recently attended the volunteer training and the need is great. What an amazing organization SAPA is! For a place that rescues literally hundreds of dogs a week, their results are nothing less than extraordinary. San Antonio Pets Alive! (SAPA) and the rescues, vets, fosters & adoptors they have coordinated with have helped to dramatically reduce San Antonio's kill rate at the city shelter from 83% to less than 20% (as of 2014)! And it's easy to see how! Every day SAPA reaches out to the community, including posting pictures of pups on ACS death row on Facebook - sometimes 100+ a day. So many of them are adopted, fostered, and rescued through SAPA via their outreach with local and distant rescues and via individual adoption centers and drives throughout San Antonio. Unfortunately, ACS (the city's official "Animal Care Services") destroys the remaining animals nearly every day... anywhere between 100 - 200 pups killed and disposed of every week (NOT AN EXAGGERATION). We have supported, shared, and sponsored pups at SAPA for only a few months now. SAPA is one of the biggest, brightest jewels in San Antonio and their tireless employees and volunteers are absolute angels for what they do. I fear the majority of San Antonians have no idea how wonderful SAPA is! If Yelp had a "BEST ON YELP" award - and it could only be given out to only one organization ever - I would choose Pets Alive! without hesitation! As I always say: SAPA rocks!!! SAPA is all about numbers, not about the dogs/cats. I was a foster for them on 3 occasions. The first thing you notice is there is NO screening of the fosters. You put in an app and within minutes, you are approved. And, here is where it gets to the point of abuse. They allow fosters to take multiple animals. They don't really seem to care about the quality of care, just that they were 'saved'. The final straw for me was a cat that I believe has been neglected to the point that I would consider it abuse. An inept foster who is allowed to have too many, along with their 'clinic' not having anyone that knows what they are doing. Bottom line....do your research! It does not take much to see that their Marbach location is horrid! Also, a bit of digging and you can see they lost the Paul Jolly adoption center. There are many other organizations in San Antonio doing a better job at helping the overwhelming number of homeless pets. Give them your money, your time, your support. read more

I would like to preface this by stating that I am currently a Foster with SAPA!. That being said, the rest of my review is based honestly off the experiences that have come with Fostering with SAPA!. I agreed to start Fostering an 8w/o puppy back in February. I was told this would be a temporary 4-8 week Foster as he recovered from Sarcoptic Mange. I began trying in March to find him his forever home, completing nearly every requirement SAPA! had for me. When asked to get him altered, I explicitly told the contact I was emailing that the day they kept trying to schedule his surgery physically didn't work with my schedule, due to a permanent previous time commitment I have for that day. My requests fell on deaf ears. My emails stopped being replied to as of April. It is now August, 6 MONTHS after agreeing to take the puppy for up to TWO MONTHS. He has started displaying dominance and aggression over my own dogs to the point that I attempted to take him back to the SAPA! Facility to terminate my Foster Contract. I was told then that they physically don't have the room to take him, and that the "organization" (for a lack of a better word) had recently undergone a massive restructuring of Staff, and that the current manager of operations would try and figure out what happened, and why I haven't had any contact since April. I received a single email, asking me to schedule the Foster for his alteration, to which I filled out the request form, and I was told in the response email, that I would have an appointment / reply within 48 hours. That was four days ago. It is grossly apparent that SAPA! doesn't care about the wellbeing of their Foster Families, and uses them as a permanent solution to the overpopulation of animals here in San Antonio. The Staff are not professional in any means, they are not quick to respond to emails, even going so far as to not respond to them at all, and they generally don't care about the Foster's personal lives. It is with a heavy heart that I must review them so poorly and share my own experiences with this Organization that I firmly believe does not need to be in business any longer. I strongly implore readers of these reviews to reconsider adopting / volunteering / fostering from/for an Organization that can't bother to uphold their end of the Foster Contract. read more

(Note: This review is ONLY about San Antonio Pets Alive. It is NOT about Animal Care Services or any other city-run animal pound. ACS is usually way cooler about adopting out animals). Spent about two hours here today only to walk out without a dog. I've been searching frantically for a companion for my German Shepherd since her mate died. After looking on Craigslist I saw an ad for SAPA. One of the dogs they had caught my eye and I found out it was going to be euthanized that day. I rushed to the facility through very frustrating traffic trying to beat the deadline that it had to be adopted by and got there just in time to find out it was at their other facility on 151, but a room had opened up so it was going to be transported to the zoo location that night. Lucky dog. I returned the following day with my two babies and my dog. After spending about an hour socializing with this dog, my dog, and my babies, I decided that even though it was very shy and submissive, I'd take it home and work with it. I filled out the paperwork and SAPA called my vet. They wouldn't let me take the animal because my dog and cat supposedly weren't up on their shots. I told them I had their shots done at different locations- the dog got hers from SpaySA and the cat was adopted from Animal Control. They called and verified this, then denied my application because I said the dog would spend most of its time outside. According to them, animals that live indoors are healthier, and they want all adopted animals to spend 90% of their time indoors. Ridiculous! I live on 1/4 acre and have two large roofed porches. Every animal who lives there loves it. It's absurd that they don't think this is good enough. I also have to question their claim that indoor animals are healthier. Several studies have concluded that indoor air is unhealthier than outdoor air, especially with a pet in the house. Not only that, but how is anything but the smallest of dogs supposed to get any exercise inside a house? Dogs need a lot more than just a walk around the neighborhood to be healthy. Even my dogs that live outside enjoy getting out for a walk, and they aren't even high energy breeds. I left the facility questioning how serious these people are about saving animals. Remember- that dog was supposed to be euthanized already and I was ready to give it a second chance at life. I was willing to take in an imperfect dog and work with it, but they weren't willing to adopt me the dog because they think my yard is imperfect. I understand they want the animals to go to good homes, but what if no one else adopts this dog? I guess they'd rather have it dead than living in what they consider imperfect circumstances. That is bullshit and it honestly outrages me. Now, does this facility truly deserve one star? Idunno. But I rated it that way because that's what everyone clicks on first, and I want people to know how to "Cheat" on the ridiculous application. When they ask if you have any other pets, say "No." Write that you have lots of experience raising whatever type of pet you are adopting, but they all died of old age. If you have to take an animal you have in to socialize it with the animal you want to adopt (highly recommended), you have a few options: You must either provide proof it is up to date on its shots, you must be able to have SAPA call your vet to verify, or you can try giving a fake number to a made-up vet and having a friend answer and "Verify" everything for you. If you have pets you don't want SAPA to know about and SAPA wants to inspect your house, schedule it for a time when you can hide your animals somewhere else. By wanting to adopt a pet I think you've already established a certain level of responsibility and care. Unfortunately that isn't enough for SAPA and they want what they rigidly consider to be perfection, even if it costs animals their lives. Because of that, I have no problem telling people how to fudge their applications if it ends up saving a dogs life. Use this info at your best discretion. read more

SAPA! is a great organization that worked with me to find the right kitten for my household. I recently moved into an apartment by myself and didn't want to live alone, so I figured a cat would be right for me. I found the kitten I wanted and though I had to wait for him to be neutered, it was a very easy process! The foster was great and gave me lots of tips about having a kitten for the first time and the staff at SAPA! made it easy for me to complete the adoption at one of the adoption centers. I love my little orange tabby and couldn't imagine what my house would be like without him!! read more

I recently adopted a kitten from the San Antonio Pets Alive Cattery, and let me tell you, get ready for a song and a dance... That in and of itself is not why I rated them a 1, the reason I rated them a one is I learned the hard way, DO NOT TRUST THEIR VET. So, to start from the beginning. My fiancé and I went to the Marbach Cattery interested in a cute, fluffy, little six week old kitten. However when we got there, that cute little fuzz ball was about ten pounds heavier and several months older than what was stated on the website. When we mentioned this, we were laughed at and told that they never update the website... Red Flag #1. As we were walking out, the kitten we ended up adopting caught our eye and it was one of those things where he adopted us and made the decision for us. When we took him out of his cage to hold him, we noticed his eyes were cloudy. We asked if he was sick and we were told no that the cloudy eyes were something he was born with but that he was taking eye drops. They didn't explain why he was on eye drops, but assured me it was something that would clear up on its own. Red Flag #2. My fiancé and I decided we could go to our vet for a second opinion and went forward with the adoption. We paid the money and then left him with them to be fixed and then we would pick him up the next weekend. We showed up to pick him up the next weekend and, despite them having 2 different phone numbers at which to reach us, we were blind sided that he had ringworm and an upper respiratory infection. That by itself isn't too surprising given the environment, but we found it odd we were not informed before going to pick him up. Red Flag #3. We had no way of isolating him from our indoor dog, so we left him with the shelter for treatment. Then came Red Flag #4. They have no phone. Literally, no phone, no number no anything. We had to physically drive all the way to the cattery to check on him. This time when we went to check on him we noticed his eyes were much worse. This time we were told again it was nothing, but they did elaborate to say it was a remnant of conjunctivitis he had when he was younger. Again, we were told it would clear on its own. Finally he was "cured" and went to be neutered where he was CLEARED BY THIER VET AS COMPLETELY HEALTHY. We brought him home believing what there vet had told us. Fast forward a few weeks and nearly 250$ he is having a flare up of his FELINE HERPES VIRUS CONJUNCTIVITIS. This is an extremely contagious illness, that is preexisting given that he is the only cat in our home, and extremely expensive. If left untreated it will lead to blindness. He is now on an oral medicine, two different eye drops and an immune booster. He will most likely be on one of the eye drops and the immune booster for the rest of his life. Our personal vet took one look at him and knew what was wrong, their vet did not catch it. If we had known from the start what the illness was we could have been managing the herpes so that he would not have a flare up. He is in his forever home and we would not dream of giving him up, he has bonded very closely with me, my fiancé and our dog (believe it or not they are best buds). However, we grew concerned that if they had missed the Herpes in our cat that there might be others and we were concerned about what would happen if a Herpes positive cat went home with a family that could not afford the bills. Or worse, went home to a family with other cats that could become herpes positive. That being our reasoning we sent an email to a generic address from the SAPA! website. We were in no way accusatory, we merely wanted to make them aware of the situation in case any other cats were exhibiting the same symptoms he had. We were thanked for making them aware, assured that he never would have been cleared if they had caught it and our email would be forwarded to the cattery and med team. We have yet to hear from anyone. Now, I know that shelters are limited on funds, but as quickly as our vet diagnosed him I have serious concerns about the Vet they are using. Not to mention the fact that our vet admitted she has personally seen 4 other animals adopted from SAPA! that were cleared and then had a major illness or injury come to light after the adoption in the past six months alone. Moral of the story, know what you are getting yourself into, expect a song and dance, have patients and DO NOT TRUST THEIR VET. Take your new pet to a vet you trust immediately following adoption. read more

We are currently fostering a dog from SAPA and we have been having trouble with her. We can no longer keep fostering her due to us moving. We have been sending numerous emails to this place and they refuse to ever reply back or take her back. We are currently at a lost due to this dog, and we have not received any help from SAPA. We adopted our puppy from the Paul Jolly branch of this organization. Building is very modern looking, giving the appearance of a safe and clean place to adopt from. This was not true for my family. Our puppy came to us sick with a highly infectious and deadly disease, and infested with worms and fleas. This shelter's dirtiness and blatant disregard for basic health procedures caused my family great distress, both financially and emotionally. A 10 week old puppy has been subjected to two different worm infestations, along with debilitating illness. This organization refuses to help, neither financially nor emotionally.
