Ringworm infestation from kitten with ringworm from the Humane Society
    Sydney S.

If I could give the San Antonio Humane Society zero stars, I would. I adopted a kitten from them under the impression that he was healthy and properly treated--only to find out after I had already spent time bonding with him and paid the adoption fee that he had been treated for ringworm. First of all, he was NOT treated properly. The kitten was still highly contagious and has now infected my entire house. I am covered in ringworm, it spread to my scalp, which can cause permanent hair loss, and I am now forced into a daily routine of disinfecting everything for 2 months--washing my sheets every day, using special medication, washing my hair with medicated shampoo, bleaching my floors, and even having to replace my bed. This is not a minor inconvenience--this is a serious fungal infection that could have been completely avoided if the Humane Society had done their job properly and been transparent from the start. Instead, I was only told about the supposed "treatment" after I had already committed to the adoption, which means I was already exposed. And clearly, this kitten was still very much contagious. What's worse? When I called them about it, not only was I offered NOTHING in terms of reimbursement, but they actually had the audacity to act like they were doing me a favor by waiving the return fee since I was within the 30-day window. A return fee?? For a sick cat they failed to treat properly?? That's outrageous. To make matters worse, one of their staff members had the nerve to tell me that ringworm "goes away on its own" if you have a strong immune system. Excuse me? That is a blatant lie. I have an incredibly strong immune system and I have NEVER had ringworm in my life--until now, thanks to this complete negligence. I have had over six cats in my lifetime and never once dealt with this. This infection came directly from the kitten I adopted from them. I trusted the Humane Society to provide honest, responsible care for their animals before placing them in homes, but they failed in every possible way. This is unacceptable, unhygienic, and downright unethical. I will NEVER adopt from them again, and I urge anyone considering adopting from this place to think twice unless you want to end up in the same nightmare I'm dealing with. They should be held accountable for this level of carelessness.

I have adopted two puppies from this location at different times....Rosie (Dahlia) and Gizmo (Biggie). Our family is so grateful to everyone that works there, for doing all that you do! They were both positive experiences, and turned out to be wonderful doggies, thank you!

I manage to walk out adopting a pet. The experience however was not the greatest. This location makes it very difficult for anyone to adopt a pet. And the young lady at the counter name Veronica is not very friendly at all nor does she care to hear anything you have to say. That made my experience all the worse. Thankfully, I was able to walk out with a beautiful kitten and listen great healthy condition. The Humane Society should really consider the people that are working at the front counter a little more carefully. People go there to try to save an animal, not to be treated poorly or turned away.

Ok I was skeptical since my last human society was in another city and was so different. This place is so new and clean. It's very inviting. I had a 7:30 appt. By 8:12 I left to come back at 3:00. She was actually ready for pick up when my husband arrived early to get her. He was so impressed with the facility. They did forget to give us the rabies certificate back, but they already reached back out to apologize and have put it out in the mail. Thanks for taking care of our baby girl Sophe.

Found Sweet silver cat with green eyes in River Oaks!

I found a 9 month old cat who is social and sweet but having a dog that did not blend with Cat I went to Defense League to see if she had a chip or nurtured. The staff was so kind and caring and I am taking her back to them next week for her fix and I hope they find her a good home. In the meantime I have posted on Facebook, Nextdoor Neighbor to see if anyone lost her as she is an inside /outside cat. It was late on Monday and the staff still had a great attitude! The place is beautiful and a tribute to all the folks who made this beautiful facility possible!

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE! I took my puppy in to get neutered he came home bleeding consistently I took him back immediately the next morning. They said he is fine just to give him a pill. The bleeding got worse and we immediately took him to the emergency room where they found internal and external bleeding due to how rough and incautious they were performing the surgery. I had to hospitalize my puppy for 2 days and get emergency surgery and a blood transfusion costing me $5,000 due to THEIR MISTAKES AND CARELESSNESS. If I didn't take him in or have the surgery performed he would have had to be put down or have passed away and they gave no cares in the world. its cost effective but dont risk it at all my baby almost died cause of them. The photo on the left is before the emergency surgery and the photo on the right is after , clearly there was a issue they dismissed!

My cat Luther loves to chill outside my apartment with his cat friend who just run around the apartments. and he's under my ex husbands name. He got an email saying they found my cat. So I go to this place and this one lady in the front has such an attitude with me. And now they're making us pay $50 and verify that he's mine. I understand, but why the attitude??? Y'all need to hire people with social skills. But Diane was great though. She's great

We had been going pretty much weekly here and also to the Defense League to see if we could find a dog that we could do something special for.

They were short and stout and STRONG. I used my brain and decided I did not want a 100lb lab ruining my life, my things, and my patience, so I decided to put her through some training classes as opposed to buying a few books and doing it on my own. I had watched through the window at a few of the PetSmart training sessions and not blown away by what I saw, or by the people who were attending the class (classmates are very important in dog training classes, as you don't want to be with somebody who can't or doesn't want to handle their jerky dog). Luckily, I bought a wire dog crate from a woman on Craigslist who told me all about the wonders of SADTC (I met her at the Humane Society where she and her German Shepherd were attending a class). I kept SATDC stuck in the back of my mind until I felt Kona was ready for some good ol' fashioned learnin.' SADTC holds their classes at the SA Humane Society at 410 & Fredericksburg. Each of the classes I took had about 15 people in each. All dogs are to have their shots, and luckily, most of the dogs weren't total dbags to begin with. Kona and I took the Clicker 1 and 2 classes, and both instructors were smart and knew what they were doing. By the end of the Clicker2 class, Kona can sit, stay, down, "leave it," walk very well on-leash, and do a few other entertaining tricks. If you are a crazy-dog-person, the further classes include something to do with Dog Dancing, as well as more involved obedience classes to prepare you for showing your dog if that's your thing. A caveat: Your dog will only be trained as well as you train it. Don't expect magic to happen if you aren't willing to practice and learn along with your dog. A+++ Would train with again!!!

I'm here to tell you that my husband and I couldn't be happier with the wonderful experience and results we have had at Wet Nose Training. We paid for the 3-week training and I'm really glad we did. Yes, it an investment to properly and thoroughly train your dog but when you think of having a well-behaved dog for the next 16-18 years, it is a sound investment. Also, this is one of those times you get what you pay for. Let me tell you, I did not see how I was going to be without my baby for 3 weeks. I kept reminding myself that we were doing this for her good so that one day she could be an off-leash dog on hikes and playing disc golf. A well-behaved dog has so many more opportunities: she can go to restaurants that allow dogs, she's welcome at other people's homes, I can trust her near children, the elderly, and other dogs. It is my saddest regret that my old dog was never trained and was poorly socialized. It has limited his life so much. Lucy got to go to Rudy's the day we picked her up! Andy is very transparent in letting you check out the environment. There is an inside work area (as well as an inside kennel room), but plenty of stimulating outdoor area for your dog to learn and practice, all surrounded by sturdy iron fencing. Once I saw the environment Lucy would be in I knew she would be safe. They only work together dogs that will be safe to work together so that your dog can develop his/her personality and confidence. I've attached pictures of our Lucy playing with a cute little friend she made there. She also went into her first heat while there and Andy and Amanda handled it perfectly professionally. We were always kept in the loop with what Lucy was working on. What made us first interview Wet Nose Training was that Andy kept getting singled out in such rave reviews at his last place of employment. I searched him out and saw that he had started his own training company. Then, when we interviewed him (we interviewed 4 other potential trainers), we found that his METHOD was the one we were looking for. As I understand it, they teach basic manners with positive reinforcement, teach leash training using a flat collar (cross between a regular collar and a prong) so that Lucy could learn what he wanted. There were also very high quality treats to reinforce good behavior. Then they add in an ecollar. That was the part I was most afraid of. On a scale of 0-99 we only needed a 12 to get her attention. She had ample opportunity to learn what was expected of her first without the ecollar before it was ever used, and it was never used without notice to her. To me, this is the most constructive way to train. It's layers of learning, like learning your alphabet before you start reading a book ;) Andy knows dogs. And Andy LOVES dogs. He truly understands their nature and gave us so much insight into Lucy, like how to watch her thought process unfold and what her "tell" is before she makes a bad choice of action. We just had a follow up the other day to iron out some of our questions so we could more accurately reinforce what Andy had taught her, and he'll be coming to our neighborhood soon so we can fine tune some of her behaviors in her natural habitat. The fact that she pauses before going through a doorway until told she can, sits when she sees another dog rather than charging them, can be put in "place" when we need her to stay still to answer the door, and leaves her cranky old brother dog alone has been such a relief. I highly recommend Wet Nose Training.

Dean was also very reassuring that a lot of what we have experienced with our Henry was normal puppy behavior. What really stood out to us was how personalized the training was. Dean took the time to understand Henry's personality and our lifestyle, and then tailored everything to fit our home environment. That made it so much easier for us to stay consistent and actually implement what we were learning day-to-day. Henry has learned all of his basic commands and is doing so well.
