I was very excited to have my 1st foster. This location does a lot for the city and some forgotten animals. However, the kitten that I was given to foster had fleas. I have two other cats. They had a bad reaction to the fleas (which they've never dealt with). I took them to vet paid $300. I spent an entire weekend spraying, cleaning, washing everything in my apartment. I wish they would have suggested that I bathe the kitten when I got her home. I am struggling with bills.... this was a huge unexpected expense for me. Adopted our beautiful dog here years ago but thought I'd share my unfortunate racial profiling experience. I dont know if the skinny bald white cop with glasses is still around here, but the day I came to adopt my dog he accused me of bringing in Marijuana because he could "smell it when [I] came in" Mind you I smelled something in the trash can right next to the entrance doors when I entered. He waited until I was trapped in the puppy adoption room to interrogate me, crossing his arms and blocking the doorway. I told him about the trash can by the doors, and that he could search me if he wanted and he huffed and puffed and said "no I would need a female cop to do that", and it ended there, no apology, just walked away. I should have gave him a piece of my mind. Anyways, great place to adopt but be wary of the racist cops. The staff was amazing, attentive, and answered our questions. If I could give the San Antonio Humane Society zero stars, I would. I adopted a kitten from them under the impression that he was healthy and properly treated--only to find out after I had already spent time bonding with him and paid the adoption fee that he had been treated for ringworm. First of all, he was NOT treated properly. The kitten was still highly contagious and has now infected my entire house. I am covered in ringworm, it spread to my scalp, which can cause permanent hair loss, and I am now forced into a daily routine of disinfecting everything for 2 months--washing my sheets every day, using special medication, washing my hair with medicated shampoo, bleaching my floors, and even having to replace my bed. This is not a minor inconvenience--this is a serious fungal infection that could have been completely avoided if the Humane Society had done their job properly and been transparent from the start. Instead, I was only told about the supposed "treatment" after I had already committed to the adoption, which means I was already exposed. And clearly, this kitten was still very much contagious. What's worse? When I called them about it, not only was I offered NOTHING in terms of reimbursement, but they actually had the audacity to act like they were doing me a favor by waiving the return fee since I was within the 30-day window. A return fee?? For a sick cat they failed to treat properly?? That's outrageous. To make matters worse, one of their staff members had the nerve to tell me that ringworm "goes away on its own" if you have a strong immune system. Excuse me? That is a blatant lie. I have an incredibly strong immune system and I have NEVER had ringworm in my life--until now, thanks to this complete negligence. I have had over six cats in my lifetime and never once dealt with this. This infection came directly from the kitten I adopted from them. I trusted the Humane Society to provide honest, responsible care for their animals before placing them in homes, but they failed in every possible way. This is unacceptable, unhygienic, and downright unethical. I will NEVER adopt from them again, and I urge anyone considering adopting from this place to think twice unless you want to end up in the same nightmare I'm dealing with. They should be held accountable for this level of carelessness. read more

More concerned with what they think is an ideal home than what is likely to be an ideal home. We wanted to adopt a large hyperactive dog and give him lots of love and room to burn off his energy. We were declined because he was not going to be an exclusively inside dog. He would have spent every night inside and most days going in and out as he pleased. I have been taking all 4 of my pets to get their shots and preventive stuff for the past few years. I'm normally in and out within 30 minutes. Not this last time. I was there for 1 hour in a half!!!! Why is that? I had an appointment Been sitting there for 25 minutes a woman comes in and within 10 minutes of her sitting there they took her before me. They did this twice to me and another patient. When I brought it to their attention the front desk did not do a thing about it. They couldn't even say they were sorry. There prices are no better if not more then Vanguard mobile. They offer low cost spay and neuter.. they dont have separate days or sections for cats and dogs. On the day you take in your pet there are at least 50 other people with their pets all in one room. The animals are all terrified by the time they take them in...my kitten was given an Anastasia that made him very aggressive for 10 hours after the surgery.. he came out with a bloody nose and lip.. scratched on his muzzle and ears... I had to take him to the vet the day after the surgery. Humane society take too many pets at one time and can't Properly care for each pet. Today I found a beautiful Terrier mixed dog around my neighborhood. I immediately picked her up the street because I could tell she was lost and most definitely not a "neighborhood" dog. I noticed she had a collar so most likely had an owner, but sadly when I took her to my vet they told me she didn't have a chip so there was no way to track her family. I was desperate to get this dog somewhere safe because I had a flight to catch the next day, and frankly could keep her. On top of that, I noticed she was in heat and needed to keep her safe from male dogs. I desperately called multiple pet rescue centers and everyone said no. I was near the SA Humane Society and decided to just show up and try my luck in person. Thankfully the team immediately said yes to taking her. I might have shed a tear or two during my plead to help her, but I was so happy to know she would be in a safe place. The process was very easy and I just had to fill out one document and pay a fee (more like a donation). I manage to walk out adopting a pet. The experience however was not the greatest. This location makes it very difficult for anyone to adopt a pet. And the young lady at the counter name Veronica is not very friendly at all nor does she care to hear anything you have to say. That made my experience all the worse. Thankfully, I was able to walk out with a beautiful kitten and listen great healthy condition. The Humane Society should really consider the people that are working at the front counter a little more carefully. People go there to try to save an animal, not to be treated poorly or turned away. read more

I found a 9 month old cat who is social and sweet but having a dog that did not blend with Cat I went to Defense League to see if she had a chip or nurtured. The staff was so kind and caring and I am taking her back to them next week for her fix and I hope they find her a good home. In the meantime I have posted on Facebook, Nextdoor Neighbor to see if anyone lost her as she is an inside /outside cat. It was late on Monday and the staff still had a great attitude! DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE! I took my puppy in to get neutered he came home bleeding consistently I took him back immediately the next morning. They said he is fine just to give him a pill. The bleeding got worse and we immediately took him to the emergency room where they found internal and external bleeding due to how rough and incautious they were performing the surgery. I had to hospitalize my puppy for 2 days and get emergency surgery and a blood transfusion costing me $5,000 due to THEIR MISTAKES AND CARELESSNESS. If I didn't take him in or have the surgery performed he would have had to be put down or have passed away and they gave no cares in the world. its cost effective but dont risk it at all my baby almost died cause of them. UPDATE: The week went by, and the Director has not returned my phone call. --- I just spent 2 1/2 hours at the Fredericksburg Rd location with our two daughters. They fell in love with a kitten they wanted to adopt. After spending an hour waiting in the lobby for a staff member to meet with us, we were interviewed about our past animals. We mentioned how we had feral cats as pets back when we lived way out in the Missouri countryside on 20 acres and how most of them disappeared due to predators, one died of being run over by a car, and one had to be put down because it attacked a neighbor's daughter who was visiting. The interviewer proceeded back to a computer and took a long while, so I peered back to see what was going on, and she was on Zillow looking up our home, viewing photos of the rooms of our house (a two story brick home in a gated community)! Seriously!!! She came back and sat down with us and told us that she needed to see rabies vaccination records for the feral cats in Missouri, and if we couldn't produce those, we couldn't adopt from the San Antonio Humane Society. I was absolutely floored, and explained to her how these were not normal indoor pets like what we were planning to adopt and care for. The staff member wouldn't budge. So, we drove home with my youngest daughter (8) balling her eyes out in tears. I have a voicemail in to the Director, so we'll see where that goes. read more

We took our dog in to get neutered and we thought that it had gone well. A couple days later we noticed that the swelling was still pretty bad, along with fluid leaking out and that there was a hole along the incision. We made sure that right after he was neutered we kept his cone on, in the kennel and limited his activity. We took him back in to SAHS and they said that the hole was fine and normal. We then called three other vet locations and sent them pictures. They all responded "that's not normal at all". Please do not take your animal here for spaying or neutering because they obviously do not care about the animals. We took our pup to the Guilbeau Station Animal Hospital and they were very nice and informative. They fixed him up and is now doing great! read more

It was time we got a little partner in crime for our lab. Cat? Dog? It didn't matter since my dog thinks everyone is her friend. I loved the playful chocolate lab and a beautiful little Siamese, but there were already paperwork started for both of them. I will have to check back. Impressively enough, the facilities are clean and well ventilated. The dog and cat shelters are in its own buildings. The dogs are two to a room. The adult cats either have their own cubey or share a play area with another well-behaved cat, whereas kittens are two or three to a cubey. This shelter is a breath of fresh air. I have not personally adopted a pet from here, yet, but plan to, and will update my review after that. This is just regarding my initial visit. The faculty is super clean and very nice. Many places tend to smell just because dogs can be stinky when you have a bunch kenneled together. But this was not the case here. The dogs have plenty of space and seem to be well cared for. All of the employees and volunteers we encountered were happy to help and answer any questions and were very knowledgeable about the dogs. They were happy to help us get a few out to walk around. As I have said, I haven't gone through the adoption process yet but I know I will be back. read more

The Humane Society of San Antonio is by far the most beautiful animal shelter I have ever seen. The place is amazing, with different buildings for dogs, cats and puppies all joined by a central courtyard complete with marble benches and a coy fish pond. Talk about a puppy's paradise! Aesthetics aside, this place houses nearly 200 animals at any given time, saving San Antonio dogs and cats from life on the streets or worse. The staff at the shelter is friendly, but you can tell that they are busy! They clean, feed and walk the animals, with the help of volunteers, and try to provide you with as much information as possible about particular animals. If you are interested in puppies, there is a special "Puppy Palace" dedicated solely to little guys. There is also a "Kitty Kottage" for cats, with special playrooms where you can get to know the kitty before taking him home. The animals at this shelter are not euthanized just to make more space, so you can sleep peacefully knowing that the dog or cat you don't have room for will still go to a good home. (This is also why they might not have room for your animal if you want to get rid of him or her... they won't put one animal down to make room for another.) Animals can stay at this shelter as long as they need to, which usually ends up being anywhere from a day to a few weeks. The animals get plenty of love from staff and volunteers, but they would much rather have a forever home with you! The shelter doesn't open until noon (they are busy cleaning in the mornings) and you need to fill out an application to adopt, which can take anywhere from a half hour to a few hours, depending on how busy the shelter is. Before going to a pet store or buying from a breeder, take a look at the animals at the Humane Society. Animals at the shelter are given plenty of love, but they deserve a forever home! The shelter now has a surgery suite where they provide spaying and neutering to help with animal overpopulation in San Antonio. So, like Bob Barker used to say, have your pet spayed or neutered. They do what they can with very limited resources. Every time we go here, I leave wishing I could take them all home with me. The puppies are always the first to go so please look at the older dogs that really need a second chance at a loving home. Many of these dogs have been neglected and have various conditions so please understand that they will recover - even those dogs with heartworms. Even if you can't adopt, stop by here and take a dog out for a walk. Throw a ball around with him (or her) because they'll love the interaction. Yes, of course, some dogs are just so happy to be out of their cage that all the want to do is walk around and sniff at everything. Be patient. The happiness in their eyes is its own reward.
