I would NEVER buy another animal from Forever Pets again. My son bought a love bird from this place. I knew I should of went with my gut and not buy a single thing after what I saw there, but we did anyway. Soon after we got home, the poor little bird died, didn't last but a couple of hours. Took it back the next yesterday to see if just perhaps they'd give my son his money back, but nope. They offered to give him another bird but instead, he got a cage since they don't offer guarantees. Here's a little of what we saw at the pet store: dead fish, dead betas in their bowls, dead bird, guinea pigs w/ no hair, Macaw had his feathers plucked out, the birds didn't have food or water. There were rat droppings in the empty cages, roaches in some of the housings. It was just an awful place. Don't buy there. read more

We just bought our bearded dragon from here. I know some reviews aren't great but honestly all the animals looked happy, fish were well taken care of, and the knowledge of the staff is incomparable. Highly advise against going here. Most animals are sick, injured, or diseased. Majority of items are overpriced and most like contaminated with mites, fungus, or bacteria. Bought a sugar glider here a few years ago (mainly because it seemed stressed and terrified, my mistake) and they misgendered it and provided incorrect care information. I enjoy going to this shop to get live rats for my snake, and yes the shop could put more effort in keeping up with the cages that the animals are in including the fish. Go Fish! This locally owned pet shop is a neighborhood gem! This place is really cool- I thought the place was clean, the animals looked happy and alive. I really only stuck to the fish store portion of the store. I came in to buy a betta fish. They had a selection of about a dozen of them, in all different colors with different patterns. She led me past intricate tanks, amazing displays, and crazy fountains! The clerk helped me pick one out, stick it in a bag, and she even had some great recommendations about the food and inquired about the water treatment for this new fish. She really helped out with making sure that the little betta would survive. It's been a few weeks, and everything is looking good! I enjoyed the murals on the outside. They have paintings of different pets you can get in there, then there's a painting of dinosaurs. I was disappointed that they didn't have a stegosaurus for sale. The only drawback of this place is that they don't accept AmEx. Parking was easy, with a dedicated private lot. I'd much rather support these guys over the chain stores. read more

As a new bearded dragon owner, I've been visiting all San Antonio pet stores to find reliable places to by from. This place was stock on products I haven't found anywhere else however I am rating this shop only on star because of the horrid conditions I witness their pets living in. I saw water bowls full of dirt, hair, poop etc. not only that but I saw a dead chameleon and bearded dragon, the other bearded dragons in the same enclosure looked severely underweight! All the veggies and salads were old and wilted! They had not been changed in days! The chameleons were in a desert habitat, not in a topical habitat! Do your research! The large bird that was out there had nearly pucked all his feathers out from stress and screamed the whole time. I could not buy from this place in good conscious knowing these poor animals were suffering. read more

Just look at the rest of the reviews. It's all true. Nothing but death and despair here. The place is dusty and unkept not a good sign especially if your selling and showing care of other animals. The prices were high and the fish selection was meh after seeing the treatment of everything and God help that poor grouper that lives in a bowl!!! I gave up, even looked at their pond stuff they literally had a few pond building videos for sale on VHS!!!!! How long have those been there. Best bet, go down a ways to Elegant Reef on Nakoma for fish goods great clean store with awesome selection. I am truly sorry for all the pets in this establishment. While walking through with an interest to purchase a new friend for my guinea pig, Mochi, I saw the raw horrors of this place. As you walk in you can already notice how the place is not kept clean. The skinny piggies were scratched up, more than half of the beta fish were dead, live fish were consuming the dead, the snakes were in enclosed small tanks, the parrot that has been there forever is still plucking its feathers out, the tiny birds were crowded in small tanks, large fish were in small tanks, and honestly many more. I had previously gone for my guinea pig Mochi and I'm so happy I took him out of that horrible place. My heart aches to see these poor animals be treated this way so I must spread as much word as I can. I do recall the last time I went I had talked to one of the most real employees there, they would tell me how the management would treat these poor animals terribly, and they never did anything to help them and how he wished they would. I really wish I could give negative or no stars and still write a review. This place is a dingy little mom and pop establishment with poorly cared for animals and ill-educated staff. I have been to my fair share of pet stores and this place definitely ranks among the lowest. There are a wide variety of animals on sale from scorpions to puppies and EVERYTHING in between, including an expansive fish area. Granted I don't know much about birds and reptiles, but their enclosures look pretty decent. That being said, the living quarters for puppies and kittens is pathetic. No bedding, no toys, just a plastic grate to lie on with feces caked to it. I really don't understand why people purchase animals here especially when they are kept in these kind of conditions. I might also mention that the prices here are outrageous! Everything here is jacked up in price and yet it still doesn't seem to affect the overall health or well-being of the animals kept and sold here. It's a shame and places like these make me want to shop at Petsmart and Petco that much more. read more

Picture proof at the bottom of the post. Horrible. TONS of fish dead. One tank had an entire pile of dead fish. The tanks are too small with too many animals in them. THE BETA FISH had a lot of dead ones just sitting in a little cup of water for everyone to see. Just left there and thought this needed to be shared. Just bad. I used to come here ages ago but the quality of the store has significantly decreased. I went in to buy a dog gravity feeder .... The condition of the items was awful. There was gunk inside the feeders. The cat scratching posts had roach poop on top of them. The stench of the store was awful. I decided to look around to see how the animals were doing. I went in to look at supplies for my guinea pig, and not being from this area, thought I would check out some locally owned stores rather than the big chains. I was really disappointed. First, when you walk in you are hit with an AWFUL smell. And I'm not talking about the normal pet store smell, this was DISGUSTING. It smelled like the place hadn't been cleaned in ages. The cages all seem very old and not to be rude, just nasty. When you walk along the wall with the rodents, reptiles, and KITTEN (which I don't think should even have to suffer being stuck in the enclosure it was in) the smell becomes even stronger. The animals all seemed to be very hot and were panting away in the tiny spaces, it broke my heart. Everything is cramped and piled together, even around the cages, specifically over their large snake tank. Stuff was piled on top of it and it looked like it had never been cleaned. I wish I could adopt animals from here simply to get them away from this place, but I'm afraid they will come home sick and spread diseases to my other animals. Not to mention, there was a man loading stuff on the shelves from outside and he very noticeably bumped me and didn't even apologize. I suppose this just may be a personal preference, but customer service is extremely important and between that and the girl behind the counter who wouldn't even look up to say welcome or answer any questions, I was again, disappointed. read more

Can you give a score of 0 stars? I went to Forever Pets yesterday with a friend, intending to purchase a young Cockatiel. The owner's behavior was strange and already had set a weird tone for our visit. I asked if I could visit with the birds and see if one of them may connect with me a little more and then I would purchase. I thought I would be brought to a safe area for the bird so we could meet and, instead, a man who was unable to understand what I was asking went into the back and started going all around inside of the cage wearing huge gloves. He knew absolutely NOTHING about how to handle these poor creatures and stressed all of them so terribly horrible that I tried to tap and tell him to stop, I tried to get help from a team member. They said, "We'll be with you in a minute." We are standing there very upset that these birds were being, essentially, scared to death. Finally after getting his attention, I put my hands up to tell him to stop terrifying the birds. Not only was it TERRIBLY disturbing, there was no way I would be able to see if any of the birds was a bit more tame than the others. They were now terrified, running around at the bottom of the cage, shaking. What's more is that he was going to bring the bird to me out in the store, right under a ceiling as well as to a place where it could get away or get seriously injured. Really?! We waited, asked for help again, and NO ONE came to help. As a result, we left. The owner saw us and said nothing as we walked out. I will never, ever come back to this place and will recommend to everyone that is looking for an animal to stay away. The owner had no solid answers about anything to do with the birds; after 46 years, you should know the basics about a common bird. If not, all of the animals they had. She was unable to even tell me what sex they were. I told her what I had read (on a million sites) and she said no, you can't tell. Are you kidding me??? To all of this, I would like to say that, I am a bird owner and know that you have to reach into the cage to get the birds. I know all of that. Yes they get scared, yes they may shake, but at least handle them with more care. We were honestly appalled at the entire experience; I have never seen anything like it. It's really upsetting that we had a terrible experience. They also lost a good sale. read more

I am not going to lie, I was extremely leery when I found this pet store on Google maps. We finally gave up on Petco, Petsmart, and Pet Barn fish because they kept dying no matter what we did. A Google search revealed Forever pets and we thought we would give it a chance. After two visits to Forever Pets, I have fallen in love. They do not have any warranty on their fish...and for good reason! They take care of their fish! Every single fish we have bought from Forever Fish is still alive! We came back a second time due to our Dojo Loach growing and having to go from a 50 gallon to 75 gallon tank. We bought more guppies, some snails, a catfish (I don't remember what the name was, but it is shiny whitish/ivory with black spots), and some feeder shrimp for our Loach and catfish. All of the workers are friendly, knowledgeable, and personable. Forever Pets has become my forever store when it comes to fish! They have reptiles, birds, hamsters, guinea pigs, farrots, and other animals, but we have only ever bought fish. The outside is not appealing to the eye, but who cares when they actually take care of their animals! I LOVE Forever Pets!!! As soon as you walk into the store, there is this terrible smell. Everywhere you look, there are cobwebs and I even saw live crickets and cockroaches on the floor in between aisles. The live animals are all cramped together, with no stimulation. All the animals are lethargic and prefer to hide and sleep. Specifically, the ferret enclosure had these huge beams of light just aimed at them. Not right! This place is no clean, they don't know how to handle the pets and the customer service was terrible. The elder lady at the cashier was very rude as I walked out. This place needs to be inspected. Dirty and cruel to the animals! read more

Just found this hidden gem by searching on Google Maps and I am SO GLAD! Family owned and operated for 35 years, they were so friendly and happy to answered all my questions. I have two dogs and a snake and they were knowledgeble about the needs of all my pets. Their feeder mice are cheaper by $2 than the ones I typically buy from larger pet chains. They didn't have something in stock and they said that if they messaged them on Facebook, they would message me back, personallt, to let me know when the product was back in stock. This place will rip you off. DO NOT GO HERE!!! They didn't give us the right change back nor a receipt and realized when we got home how they mistaken a $50 bill for a $20 and gave us the wrong change. Called as soon as we got home and the lady said she would call back at 4:00 pm and never did, had to call her back and she had the audacity to sit there and say she was only $3.00 over, lol, yeah right, more like $30 over. Then the woman wanted to argue and call me and my daughter a liar in the fact that we didn't get a receipt when she said they always give receipts. Are you serious??? Why would I lie about that? YOU DID NOT GIVE A RECEIPT FOR 2 DOZEN DUBIA ROACHES!!!! We had NO receipt. After reading all the reviews on this place, best believe we'll be going elsewhere for Dubia Cockroaches for our beardy. I recently bought an Aviculara from this shop for my daughter (within about the last two weeks). I had called and spoken with Vivian who was extremely helpful and even held her for pick up for a few hours for me, which I was very appreciative for as I could not find another Versicolor within a reasonable distance. While checking out and my card already being processed, the older woman behind the counter *not intentionally aggressive but NOT the way you handle a tarantula* put the holding container in the bag along with the enclosure I bought for her. I tried not to think too much into it so I go home, surprise my daughter and Lara *which is what we named the tarantula* seemed to be stressed, which I also understand from possibly the car ride home. I get her into her enclosure and had noticed she had not moved much for the past few days, she just stayed up on her hill I made for her. 4 days ago, I placed a smaller-than-acceptable feeder cricket in hopes she would eat. Still no movement. I checked again this morning and finally lifted her up and she is completely limp and weak, her abdomen completely shrunken and a tear on her side where her carapace meets the abdomen. It was not the cricket as its entire carcass was still in the enclosure, so it was obvious Lara had not touched it. I called Forever pets just a while ago in regards to the situation and am unsure who I spoke with and they were very sympathetic but explained any sales on live animals are final. I can understand that if it were explained at the time of purchase but it was not. In addition to how she was handled by the woman behind the counter, I know that I did not cause my daughters T's death. I have 4 others of my own and am an experienced owner. They refused to provide any replacement, I am now out $120 and I will definitely never recommend Forever Pets for any type of live animal purchase if their staff is not fully trained on how to handle them. read more

I would not recommend anyone buying any animals here, especially considering they don't know basic care of hedgehogs. The hedgehogs did not have any wheel and they were mixed with different ages as well as genders. One of the hedgehogs they were trying to sell me had his his ear bitten off and they were still trying to sell him to me even though his ear wasn't even healed! However, I actually did end up buying a hedgehog there (which was a dumb choice because of all the red flags, including them saying that all animal sales are final) and bringing it home to find out he has a respiratory problem, which then I ended up having to pay a 100 dollar vet bill. My hedgy, Watson, will probably be okay, but I'm for warning everyone looking for a new pet, do not buy your new pet from here. read more
