Honestly this part of the city is beautiful but overpriced and DANGEROUS in FIRE season. There is basically one way in and out of this place so I would never live here...everyone trying to evacuate would be stuck. Already there is massive traffic when people are going to school and work in the mornings and coming home in the afternoon. It's scary thinking about what would happen if a fire started here. Bashing a Visitor Center in order to bash a neighborhood you don't know anything about is kind of a dumb concept, but ok, I'll bite. But I'm going to go the other way. Let's try an anology first. The reason 5 billion people line up outside Phil's BBQ every second of every day is because they love it. It sort of logically follows that Phil's is doing something right, even if you don't like the joint, and that's ok, too. The reason 99.99% of everyone who lives in San Elijo Hills speaks well of their neighborhood is not because they are mind-controlled. These thousands of real-live folks---with real-live jobs and real-live friends and real-live interests and real-live problems, too--actually have real-live reasons for loving it. But I completely understand if you are too busy or too simple minded or too cool for school to bother to find out why. On the other hand, if you don't love it, great! The neighborhood doesn't want or need you anyway. But, oh, what a wonderful Visitor Center it is! read more

This place is amazing.... My husband and I just have fallen in LOVE with the entire community of San Elijo Hills. I first found out about it when I attended a stroller strides group there... my son was just 6 weeks old and I was not able to take him to the gym yet. I met the most amazing group of girls/women around my age, some older some younger... I'm 35. Almost all of the ladies were so friendly and welcoming The community is so well laid out. It reminds me of when I lived in Summerlin a master planned community in Las Vegas. I actually like it better because it's not in the Desert and only a 15 min drive to the coast. From the hilltops you can see Ocean views and gorgeous sunsets. I actually like that it only has one road in and out of the community.... I actually lived in Coronado 10 years ago and that place is heaven on earth, SEH has a similar small town feel... but at a fraction of the cost! I remember when I lived in Coronado someone told me the reason crime was so low there was because there was only two ways on and off of the island so it made it really difficult for people to get away quickly... so maybe that is why the developers made it that way. Our workouts never get boring, there is so many hikes and trails all through the community. This past Easter we attended their annual Easter Egg hunt, they have so many fun events like this year round... I'm looking forward to October Fest and the Tree lighting at Christmas this year. My son is now 18 months and goes CRAZY over the Spray grounds and loves the parks there. A lot of the moms remind me of myself... they are somewhat stylish, trendy and hip. There are Bugaboo and Bob Strollers everywhere... I love going down to the cafe to grab a coffee or eat lunch out by the fireplace on the patio. My husband and I are SOO excited to move there this fall. I am shocked by previous reviewers... I think that they are much older and just not in this phase of their life... if you have kids, are about to have kids..... you will love this place. If having a lot of land is important to you or you work in South County and hate commuting then it's probably not for you but at this point in my life this place is exactly what I have been searching for. Update: Now that I've lived here for 3 months I still think it's pretty amazing however it's annoying that the future shopping center is not done yet, we need more stores!! Update 2.5 years later we are moving out of SEH, glad we didn't buy here, not Nearly as impressed as I was years ago, I now think the community is lacking so much, i just prefer areas that have more to offer within a 1-2 mile radius. The one star reviews on here should really be removed since they violate the Yelp rules as I understand them - they have nothing to do with a first hand experience of the SEH Visitors Center. I live in SEH and love the community. That said, I'll actually refer to the Visitor's Center from here on. (What a concept.) The Center has recently moved from the beautiful stone building on the park that it was housed in to the new Marketwalk live/work storefronts. It is beautiful inside, dark hardwood floors, upscale decor, and a lovely topotable for showcasing the community and surrounding areas. The signage is awesome, clear, colorful, and I love the high end design work. The ladies in the Visitor Center are lovely and helpful - I always get a quick pick up when I call and help with whatever it was I was calling about. If you are driving through SEH for the first time - stop in and see it for yourself. read more

I visited SEH visitors center on Sunday with my girl friend and I was impressed with the presentation. Donna was very nice and showed us around. They are able to mortgage that space out for whatever type of shop you want to open and the people who run the shop will live in the lofts upstairs (no sublet). Not a bad idea but its very pricey...$750k is quite a lot. However if you can afford it I would go for it. The loft is spacious, It comes with a 2 car garage as well. The demographics are very very good and is a very safe and family-oriented place. I would feel very good about opening a business there, I think if you can connect with the community you can make friends/customers for life which is what its all about, My only gripe with the housing is that there is not much space in between homes. I would imagine for 400-700k you'd want some privacy. read more

San Elijo Hills was definitely not "built on a landfill." However, it is adjacent to the former San Marcos landfill, which has been closed for about 15 years. The site, southwest of the community, has been covered with a five-foot layer of clay soil and planted with bright yellow wildflowers and native vegetation. The undeveloped site is regularly monitored by the County of San Diego. read more

Those reviews are hysterical. I could see where they're coming from. But I think it's the sense of community the residents feel and access to all the community has to offer. I have to say that the developer has done a dreadful job of building the so-called "downtown". I heard it took 3 yrs to get the Albertsons in there -- which is a great Albertsons. But the place has been under construction for years. I like only 2 or 3 communities in the Project, which are the oldest communities, North of Elfin Forest. The rest are too cookie-cutter and really feel like track homes. I like land and I know there isn't much of that for residents of San Elijo Hills, but maybe I'd give it up for some of the activities, parks and schools being so close? It would have to be the homes that have some land and privacy though. read more

Hoping that Mick G and Bret B stay in Chula Vista or TJ or wherever they live. Sadly their jealousy of the wealthy folks that live in SEH has come through in a blog post. Man up and try to live life in a positive way. Get back in line at the welfare office and leave the wealthy folks alone. SEH is a nice place to live. Don't be a hater just becasue you and your 1988 Hyundai can't afford it there. And stay out of my home town too. Coronado doesn't need your negative vibes. read more

The previous reviews, while very funny, don't really do justice to the community. I guess the review is for the visitor center but the comments seem to be for the community overall. It's a family-centric community with a walkable shopping district and easy access to parks, schools, trails. Where else do you see this apart from super expensive coastal neighborhoods? I think that this area represents an incredible value for new families. I grew up in a walkable neighborhood and have been very disappointed by the way most of Southern California has been developed. You need to get in a car and drive 10 miles to the nearest mega-mart just to pick up milk and eggs. Not so in this community. Other developers need to take heed - this is how you create a neighborhood, not some loosely connected series of houses without any basic retail support. 5 stars for the visitor center because they also make good sandwiches. :) read more
