Parking on the street is packed, had to park a couple of blocks down. The square pizzas are ready to eat at the counter. Grabbed an oat milk latte, one pistachio and one Nutella filled donuts. C$16.10 / $11.50 The Nutella and pistachio cream transferred to the top of the to go box. The pistachio cream is light and sweet, it's not bad. Can't say I have ever had pistachio butter much, but seemed sweeter than I had expected. The Nutella is decadent and yummy, as expected. The dough was super light, airy, yet a bit chewy. The dough was good, carb worthy for sure. Not dense or heavy at all. I actually ate all of the dough, that's a good sign of a donut. Don't bother cutting the donut, ends up being a total mess. Great little spot for delicious square pizzas, pastries and coffee. Went here on Saturday April 27th around 11ish - the place was packed with a line forming almost out the door. Luckily this moved fast. The menu options are simple, there are a few types of pizzas that you can get by the slice (square) or whole. There a couple donut options, cannolis, chocolate chip cookies and croissants - along with coffee of course. Prior to coming, I saw pictures and reviews of sandwiches at this location - but there were none when I went. Perhaps there is a varying menu or special items that vary during the year? We tried 3 types of pizzas, the sausage and rapini, caprese and "Caciocavallo" which is a potato and cheese pizza with no tomato sauce. They were all excellent, with lots of toppings and satisfying bite feel. The crust is kind of like a foccacia bread, it is chewy and delicious. There is very limited bar seating inside the restaurant, otherwise during spring/summer time there is an outdoor terrace with a few tables. Decent little café in Little Italy Montreal will give you a very refreshing morning. It is small with some nice outdoor patio seats. Morning breakfast pizza gives me surprises. Not a big portion but beautifully baked. Sunny side up egg, sun dried tomato pieces and herbs. Crunchy crust and not oily. Must try. Coffee and pastries are fantastic. The freshly ground espresso gives a great start in the morning. Friendly people work behind the counter. This is a hidden gem for coffee and pastries in the Little Italy area. Recommended. The place is a really nice spot to hang out in the summer. It has a really nice terrace and the sun hits just right. The food was great, I was really hungry when I arrived and the pizza helped a lot. Wow, once I decade I find an economically accesible eatery that is just extraordinary in quality, flavor, and texture, and San Gennaro is one of them! Extremely delicious and fresh pizza and dohghnuts, this is dangerous for one's health! The pizza was the 2nd best pizza I've had in my life (and I've been to Italy!). I especially liked the potato and smoked cheese slice. Crispy, airy, buttery crust. As for the doughnuts (bomboloni), I ordered both the custard and the pistachio . Both were scrumptious, the fillings so smooth. I was a little hesitant to order the pistachio because the color looked odd and I was unsure what the base might be, but it was wonderful. The pistachio filling tasted like a mix between pistachio, white chocolate, and custard. The custard filling was smooth, creamy, and vanilla-y -- not to sweet. Dough inside was so light and fluffy, yummy air pockets. One more thing, the people who work there seemed lovely. They were friendly, patient, seemed to genuinely enjoy their job, and were proud of their food. Hello was invited to San Gennaro In the heart of Montréal with street parking that was hard to find. Due to Covid 19 they only let 6 people in at a time. They had Covid protocols in place. The pizza looked amazing and the deserts looked good to eat through the glass. When I got to counter I I formed them I was from Yelp elite. The counter lady turned to her colleague and said great another one is here in a condescending tone and look. She then asked me what do you want and when I asked for some advice she said coffee and this OK. I was going to also order two small pizza to go and some extra desserts. However I got turned off and said give me what every you want. She gave me a latter and some sort of Nutella croissant. The coffee was coffee with a bit of cream. A must-go place in Montreal if you are a fan of pizza, coffee and pastries. Visit this little coffee shop in the Little Italy for some treats! Once you're inside, you are greeted with some friendly, familty vibes by the people who work there : it's super pleasant. The coffee was great. The pastries were good, but my bombolone didn't have as much cream as I had hoped. Wish there was more of that delicious vanilla cream and pistachio filling. Location: On St. Zotique east of the main. Street parking is available but metered (and hard to come by!). The closest subways are probably Beaubien or Jean-Talon and then you'll need to walk from there. The place: Very small walk-in establishment where you essentially get your food to go (or, in these pandemic times, you order online then pick up). The space was clean and a maximum number of 6 people were allowed inside. The goods: I ordered a slice of the Margherita and man-friend ordered the potato pizza (I forget what it was called). Both slices were fresh, and thick and delicious! My only 'complaint' (if you want to call it that) is that there was exactly one basil leaf on my slice and I would have liked a couple more. But it's not a deal breaker! They also offer a few pastries as well as drinks and coffee. Service: Good. This is a great spot for a quick snack or to pick up dinner if you're feeling a little lazy. What a hidden pleasure! We went for Yelp elite week and immediately as you enter the place is abuzz with great Latin sounding beats, and the smell of baked crust envelops you warmly. Can I just say, Yelp really knows how to pick great places to highlight!! I love that I'm getting to explore the city and sampling all these great local finds. San gennaro is hip and young yet its flavors are definitely down to earth and classic. We got a slice of the mashed potatoes pizza, a slice of their margherita, a pistachio bombolone, and a macchiato. Everything was fantastic! It's a thicker crust than I'm used to (or usually like), but somehow so comforting and classic. Their mashed potatoes pizza is so freaking good!! It was my fav thing there with some delicate Gouda, peppery, and warm and a slight crunch to the doughy crust. Just fantastic. The margherita was alright but again, so classic that the flavors just hit in all the right spots. Makes you satisfied and you don't even know why. Finally, the bombolone (which, is so fun to say). It was downright delicious!! It is a childhood nostalgic taste of full on dough in your face with a crap ton of sugar generously covering the whole shabang. We devoured it in 4 bites. But hey, don't take our word for it, look at the pic of the squirrel holding on to the bombolone box for dear life. He was licking that box ignoring all the humans close to him for at least 10 mins. Then I realized my mistake and went ahhh I'm an uncultured swine lol, kk lemme taste this. BOOM! This is an alcohol shot straight to the heart. Great taste but if you don't drink coffee don't get this! Service is super fast, friendly, and the vibe is of a busy cafe that's somehow still so relaxed. Good covid restrictions in place (6 max in store), and be prepared to wait in line during peak hours (right after we stepped in, a huge line of 10 ppl started behind us). Prices were decent though a bit on the expensive side if you're thinking about size to value. We were nicely full tho sharing all that between two hungry adults. stumbled on this cafe when taking a trip through little italy. My wife only wanted a tea but what we found was A LOT more. They make a whole bunch of stuff in here. Eveything from sweet stuff to also savory food. They make a variety of square pizza's and they were mostly delicious. The breakfast pizza was my favorite. It had a sunny side egg on it and some other seasoning. We tried the potato one which was also good. Ironically enough, our least favorite was the margarita square which was a little bland. They have a glass window where you can see the pizza maker working his magic. Very cool! The nutella filled donut was also awesome. It had a great soft texture with the creamy nutella. Solid!! I had high expectations because of all the 4 and 5 star reviews and unfortunately I was disappointed. Coffee was ok, nothing special. San Gennaro is located in little Italy, I was expecting an excellent coffee. The bombolone were very good but they only had approximately 2 teaspoons of filling. We arrived at lunch time and they had almost no selection of pizzas and just a few pastries. I've heard their gelato is great so I might come back in the summer and give that a try. read more

When I heard that the people behind Bottega were opening up another spot specializing in pizza al taglio I was excited since their pizza is the best in the city in my opinion. They also have a wide variety of italian pastries for sale as well as gelato. There isn't that much seating but in warmer months there is a nice street terrasse. The pizza is quite good. I had a vegetarian one, as well as one with cheese, sausage and potatoes. The vegetarian one was my favourite by far. I wasn't too crazy about the potato on the other one but it was still enjoyable. I finished it off with a migliaccio which is a type of cheesecake made with ricotta. It was a little on the dry side but I did like the combination of lemon and ricotta. Pricewise it's worth every penny. My whole meal cost me $15 and that included a gazzosa along with the food that I had bought. It was in line with what I was expecting to pay and the quality of the product was very high. Customer service was another big plus and it was very good here. San Gennaro is definitely worth the trip if you're in the Little Italy neighbourhood and I will definitely be back to try more of their offerings. read more

Thank you San Gennaro for starting off my Pizza Week 2015 on a high note! From the moment I walked in and heard soulful blues licks on the radio, I knew it was going to be a good experience. San Gennaro isn't making an entire pizza as their special for Pizza Week, instead they specialize in Pizza al taglio, or pizza baked in a rectangular tray and sold in slices. For Pizza Week, they're offering a roasted cauliflower pizza, using both white and purple cauliflower, sprinkled with paprika and grated parmesan, lemon zest, and a little parsley. While it's not my favourite combination of toppings, in the spirit I ordered one piece, and also tried the Breakfast Pizza (eggs, fior di latte mozzarella, cherry tomato, and basil), as well as the marinated vegetable pizza (zucchini, eggplant, and peppers). I immediately noticed that San Gennaro doesn't use a standard pizza dough, it's more crunchy and crumbly-feeling. The dough is an important part of the flavour of the pizza here, unlike other places it has a distinct flavour and adds to the overall experience. I found the special pizza to be a bit too "busy", I couldn't really enjoy all the different components, a few were drowned out. That's not to say it didn't taste good, just that I felt it's perhaps too ambitious. I really liked the Breakfast Pizza however, and I'm looking forward to finishing the vegetable pizza later on. I tried an imported Chinotto soda as an accompaniment (think Brio, but better :) ), and finished off with a small plate of bombolones, an Italian fried donut sort of pastry, filled with vanilla cream or Nutella (I had both!). The bombolones were pretty awesome, if you like sugar (check!), pastry (check!), things that taste good (double check!), and don't forget sugar (check!). We stumbled upon this place while looking for a place to wait for our Airbnb check in. Everyone was so friendly! We had a large luggage and a puppy and were warmly welcomed. Someone even brought him a tub of water. Had the pizza (super delicious !!), quiche, donut, and a specialty dessert (forgot the name), and several espresso drinks. Everything was yummy and the service was truly outstanding. Also the interior decor is lovely - clean modern lines with lots of natural sunlight. I went in for a quick bite as I was stranded in the valley of the shadow of hunger caused by two awkwardly-scheduled meals. The Margherita pizza had an authentic Roman feel to it - both in taste and texture. The size and price were very reasonable. In terms of setting, I enjoyed the light, familiar ambiance were the barista seems to know most patrons, who have all the reasons in the world to go back again and again. Nope! Don't understand the reviews. I was very excited to try it due to all the Instagram posts, but unfortunately I was disappointed by the quality of the food. The best pizza al taglio in terms of quality of the dough and ingredients remains Taglio di Roma in Laval. They are masters at their craft. Miss Napoletana also makes a good one in terms of dough and cheese but they are limited to one or two kinds per day. San Gennaro dough is not bubbly and tasteless. They have a nice variety of pizza but the taste was where it fell short for me. Bomboloni were tasty but quite oily and too dense (not airy as it should be). Sfogliatella were not fresh. read more

The service was great, the guys were really extremely friendly and helpful. The bad: The Pizzas. There is a certain vibe I love about Little Italy in Montreal. The real communal vibe - the way people seem to just come together to sit and enjoy a coffee and a chat. The little cafes and shops around that area cater to that really well. I don't visit the area as much anymore but when I do, I really try to enjoy that experience. San Gennaro on St-Zotique is a place I have heard much about since it opened a few years ago now. A hybrid pizzeria, bakery, coffee shop, grocery and gelato shop, it tries to cover lots of ground but given its heritage - San Gennaro was started by the same group that gave us restaurants Bottega and Hosteria in Little Italy - it definitely has a good chance. First up, I tried one of their arancinis. A solid version all-around. There was a nice crunch on the exterior and the interior is a great mix of veal, green peas, mozzarella and parmigiano. Nothing to complain about here. But truthfully, we are here to talk about their pizza. Coming from the group that brought us Bottega pizza just next door, there are certainly expectations even if we are dealing with Pizza al Taglio, not the napoletana-style they serve at Bottega. Pizza al taglio is baked in large rectangular trays and served by the slice. As such, crust-wise, we are not talking about thin-crust anymore. This is a thicker, more chewy pizza - the common version we have all had would be the tomato pizza often served in buffets or at children's parties. Thankfully, this is much better than that. This pizza has a great crunch to its crust while still being nice and chewy. I tried a host of different pizzas over a few visits. The first one was a potato and andouille sausage pizza. The inclusion of potato was something I had never tried before. It makes the pizza a little more dense and a little drier especially without any tomato sauce. The real kicker though was the sausage whose spiciness really came out. I then tried the standard Margherita pizza. Their tomato sauce has a nice smoothness to it and a nice sweetness but acidic taste. Top it with some mozzarella and you have a solid classic. On a follow-up visit, I tried the same pizza but with salami added to it. Same great taste with some meaty goodness. A more unique offering is their breakfast pizza. Topped with a egg, some cherry tomatoes and some pork salume, you have a nice mixture of the richness and spiciness. The egg is cooked just enough to not leak all over the pizza which makes it easier to enjoy as a single slice. A nice change-up for a morning snack. The final one I tried was another potato pizza - this time without the sausage, just with some smoked cheese. I was curious how the potato would work without the spicy sausage. Another hit - the smoked cheese created just enough of a contrast with the potato to help lighten the feeling. As I was sitting outside of the terrasse on my last visit, I couldn't help but observe the table of elderly Italian men visiting there simply having a coffee and chatting. Their level of comfort on the terrasse chatting with the waitress as she passed by as they were enjoying the weather. It speaks to how San Gennaro has fit into the neighbourhood and the vibe they have achieved. Good food, a nice atmosphere and a great terrasse - all a good combination for when you are passing by Little Italy. Cheers! read more
