While the staff is very nice. I found the service to be subpar. The Dr. forgot to include the correction for astigmatism in one eye. I was told to keep wearing the glasses. That I had to get used to the new prescription. Having worn glasses for 40 years, I knew something was wrong. They did correct that but when the glasses came back I was having a problem with the other lens. I was slow to bring it back due to a hectic work schedule. 2 weeks later the arm came off. While I'm sure these problems will be corrected, I have never had so much trouble getting new glasses. I can say with confidence I will be finding a new provider next time around. read more

Had a eye exam appointment w/Dr. Christine Nguyen - Been through a lot of other optometrist over many multiple decades of my life but was pleasantly surprised w/her professionalism and personality - Didn't feel rushed as she answered each and every question as best as possible - Repeat business again for sure - I made a appointment at 9:00 A.M. (got there five minutes before hand) but had to wait until 9:14 A.M. to get the ball rolling. Once I get in on time, I will definitely give it a five star rating. read more

My family (wife and two children) and I have been going to SL Optometry for years. We all ware glasses, and unfortunately we have very poor vision coverage from our crummy insurance. Even with the little resources our insurance affords us, the staff at SL Optometry have bent over backwards to meet our needs. For example, when my son switched to contact lenses so he could take up fencing, his prescription was on back order. SL optometry gave us free samples for weeks to carry him over until his prescription came in. I suffer from a degenerative retinal disease and my vision is always changing. SL optometry has provided eye tests for me even when my insurance wouldn't cover it. These are really good people who take great care of their customers. That is something I deeply appreciate and value. In all fairness I want to point out that both the low reviews for this establishment are from people who don't even live in the area. They also give very low reviews for dubious reasons. read more

I previously found out that my usual office in Oakland has closed down so I looked to Yelp for advice and found this hidden local gem. Everyone was really nice , professional , and the whole visit itself went by quick and easy. The selection of frames wasn't as vast as my old office but the consultant was really informative of different styles and lenses that may be a fit for my face and liking. Would recommend this place no questions ask, just make sure you have change for the meters if you want that VIP parking right in front. read more

I decided to go to SLOG because of a recent move in the area, I was looking at other optometrists in the area but this place was the only one that had hours most accommodating to my work schedule. I was a little hesitant because of the overwhelming negative reviews of this place, but I thought I'd give them a shot. Dr. Darnell is amazing! She was informative, patient, and very helpful with my needs. But when it came down to picking my lenses/contacts, I felt like the optician (Rachel) was more motivated to get the most money rather than catering to what I wanted. I kept telling her I just wanted to stick with my own frames since their selection of frames are limited/didn't like them too much. But she just became very insistent on getting new frames, and when it came down to the breakdown of the pricing of new lenses and what my insurance covers (btw this is my first time using my own insurance so I'm oblivious to what they cover lol) she was very condescending and literally laughed at why I couldn't understand what my insurance covered. Fast forward to when my lenses were finished, I come in for my appt only to be told that the person who cuts the lenses wasn't even there. So I had to make ANOTHER appointment the following week when the person would be there. I'm extremely disappointed with the experience I had here. read more

Dr. Saavedra is the best! I brought my 7 year old son and 9 year old daughter for their annual exam and they just love the experience every year. For the first time my young daughter will be wearing glasses and she's so excited about it. The selection of frames are great. We live in Oakland and my husband and I have been seeing Dr. Saavedra for over 10 years. We wouldn't go to any other optometrist. She takes great care of us and our eyes. DO NOT recommend this place. I was in and out there. I didn't feel I was taking care of at all. Dr. Saavedra didn't care about the health of my eyes at all. Marcela helped me with glasses and she was talking about her kids and didn't help me choosing my glasses at all. They should take more time with patient especially the doctor. Dr. Saavedra is so sweet and nice! I've always had such a pleasant time with her during my examines. I recently got a new job and wanted to check out how my insurance would play out there with getting new frames. I was paired with a new person, training, while looking at options for my new frames. She was lovely and knowledgeable. finally found some Marc Jacobs frames that were priced well. After GIGI's calculations involving my frames and protective lenses blah blah blah, she gave me a price. The price wasn't that bad at all and I was going to consider getting them. I just thought my insurance would cover just a little more on the frames. Disappointed in my insurance, I gently said, I'll think about it. GIGI then said to me, "maybe you can come back and pick something else within your budget." EXCUSE ME? My budget?! Ummm.. just because I didn't want to buy something doesn't have anything to do with my budget. GIGI SUCKS and assumes that people are broke because they leave without purchasing frames. So happy to take my business elsewhere. Dr. Saavedra take care of her because she is making you lose customers. read more

Had a scheduled appointment well ahead of time; like several weeks. Once I arrived, I was told they would be giving me an eye exam. When I first came in and scheduled my appointment, I informed the front desk person I had a previous eye exam at Kaiser. I just needed to find a prescription under my vision carrier. I was then told I couldn't be seen, but was asked to fill out paper work that I previously filled out. I was then scheduled for another appointment because I did not have the prescription with me. You would think I would of been told this on the very first visit. It was like none of my paperwork was processed. This was a total waste of time. Not sure I will be returning. My time is too valuable to waste leaving work early. They were very unorganized. read more

Tyrone C. Let me start by saying the the SL Optometry Group is an exceptional business with excellent customer service! I first visited their location to replace a pair of reading glasses. The reception staff were friendly, courteous and highly professional. And although there were several customers in the office, my wait time was less than 5 minutes. Then, I sat down with Anna, one of their most experienced Opticians. She was very sharp, quite witty and really knows her business. With her help, I was able to purchase my new stylish reading glasses (including frames and lens) for about a third of what Lens Crafters would have charged. They were also ready within 5 days. And that's not all. I returned a couple of weeks later for a slight adjustment, and Anna got me in and out in less than 5 minutes. But here's the real kicker. Recently I had to return again, pretty bummed out, because someone stepped on my "everyday" glasses at the Gym. I thought I would have to pay for a whole new pair, (which originally costed more than $500 at Lens Crafters); SL Optometry's on-call Opticians took them in the back, and 15 minutes later, completely repaired them at no additional expense! Did you hear me? At no additional cost! I would highly recommend the SL Optometry Group to anyone who appreciates superb customer care in a family-friendly environment at sane prices! Don't come to this place. Very bad experience. I saw Dr. Saavedra, very perky, very energetic but so fake. I could tell she didn't mean anything she said to me. Dedicated only 5min on my eye exam, and I felt she didn't even really check my eyes at all. Staff is okay but I think they are not genuine at all. Fake smiles and didn't pay attention of my needs when I was picking my glasses. I don't recommend to come to a place like this when they are all being fake. It's a busy office and they are under staff, need to hire more staff. Wouldn't come to this office ever again. This office is very friendly, professional, and clean. They have kids things to do in the waiting room. Receptionist and assistant were personable, patient,and accomodating (I brought my preschool son there). Dr. Saavedra was extremely knowledgeable and had a great "bedside manner".
