Note: this property has two different Yelp sites, this and Hilton Vacation Club San Luis Bay Avila Beach (Hilton acquired it some years back). I've written the same review for both. My late husband and I purchased an every other year timeshare, directly from another owner here, years ago. I love visiting Avila Beach and this timeshare continues to serve its purpose. Some years back it was taken over by Hilton. As far as the property itself, the ownership change hasn't had a noticeable impact. I've always viewed this place as a bit outdated. However, it's maintained very well and is very clean. A majority of the room offer views of the ocean plus there are area on the property that you can relax outside with an ocean view. It's also a short walk from here to the oceanfront restaurant/shop area and the spectacular Bob Jones Trail! On this trip, I was very pleased with the new ceiling fan over the bed. In addition, they've replaced the terrible polyester bedsheets with cotton ones. I really hated the polyester ones, so I'm extremely happy about this! It seems to me that the housecleaning staff doesn't deal with recycling but I did notice recycling containers in the club. A tip, for those that would like to come for a week, but not purchase a timeshare, is to look at the RedWeek website. Here you'll find timeshare owners renting out their week. Stayed for a week. Raining all the time were there and sunshine came out on day we were checking out. Front desk friendly and accommodating. Had interaction with cleaning staff by asking for extra towels from their cart. Very polite and helpful. Elevator service -- small capacity and slow. Service staff should use the big luggage elevator instead of the guest elevators. The wait for the elevator door to close is irritating, even if the close door button is pushed, the car just sits and waits. Like the free laundry facilities a bit hotel has to provide detergent. Except for the vending machines for snacks and sodas, no food source in the vicinity. Maybe a sandwich or pastry automat would be useful. An ice machine in the coffee room will be useful. Nearest ice machine is in third floor aside from the ref in the room. The drinking water dispenser was "recycling" when I was getting water to drink. Front desk said a resident filled up his jug of water and emptied the machine. Only one drinking water dispenser in the whole hotel? Front desk apologized and provided a bottle of water. Room - we can hear all the heavy footsteps of the residents in the room above ours. Are the floors very thin that footsteps sounds can be heard? Maybe the floors should be carpeted to deaden the noise. The bathroom counters feel sticky. Wiping numerous times did not help. Not sure if hotel allows pets but I saw a guest walking her dog in the hallway. Overall the stay was pleasant. read more

First time staying here-invited by a friend that owns a timeshare week. Very familiar with the area since I grew up not far from here. We are Marriott members and I am used to Marriott quality, thus the 4/5 stars. This property is now a Hilton property and I am thinking they will begin to upgrade it. The only thing that would have made this room better is an unobstructed view. But while standing on our balcony to see the ocean, we did get a glimpse of two whales. We stood watching til our feet hurt. We came as RCI exchange members, so we might not have received the same treatment an owner might. The room was very clean and well appointed. Checking in was nightmarish. People were blocking the entry with their cars, pulling so close to the cars in front of then that some couldn't offload their luggage. They ran out of luggage carts, but there was a secret room with many more, but I found this out after grabbing wht i thought was an abandoned cart. I mentioned I'd just stand there to see if any came back and the guest told me about the secret spot. The nice woman who checked us in was very pleasant, as were mist of the staff. However, when calling the front desk to ask questions, they were not as friendly. Overall, this is a spectacular place if you're an owner or if you can reserve a ocean view room. Nice area with limited accessible to the beach. Need to cross a semi busy road. Beautiful view of the beach and love waking up to the sound of the ocean. Front desk was very helpful and greeted us daily. No restaurants in the hotel but have a large lounge area with fuse ball table, ping pong table and XL checkers and chess board. Only 1 fire pit to share with others who are also trying to enjoy. Wish they had more around the area for more privacy. Gym needs more working equipment. Only 1 treadmill was functional so you have to be patient. Suites are nice just need to be updated and needs a facelift soon. read more

Diamond level Hilton and owners of HGV. Bad room view in spite of reserving it a year ago. Compared to other HGV properties, not great. No restaurant which is ridiculous for a "resort." Internet is very difficult to connect to. Dropped me every day between 5 and 6 and I had to struggle to get back connected. Rooms are dated. I would not stay here again without major upgrades. read more

We had a beautiful suite. The room was very nice. Beds were just ok. Our beautiful suite had a full view of the top of a roof. That is my main complaint. Nice amenities, game room, fire pits, and movies to rent. When you arrive they will try to convince you to go to a time share meeting. They were pretty pushy at the concierge desk. I think the other reviewers have done a good job describing the grounds and amenities, so I'll concentrate on our 1 bedroom suite. Parking is in front of the L-shaped complex. With the majority of the rooms facing southwest, the beach view will have the parking lot in the foreground. The lot is terraced, the upper level mostly for disabled. We ended up having to park two more levels down, then climb back up to the lobby. It isn't Mt Everest, but if you have any kind of problem walking up a hill, it's better to drop off your stuff and whomever doesn't want to hike, then go park. The lobby has lots of natural stone floors and counter tops. To the right is checkin, to the left is "Concierge". There's an odd odor in the lobby. It reminded me a bit of a senior assisted living facility. Once we were all checked in, the concierge directed us to their area under the pretense of providing us with information about the property and discounted area dining. During that time, they hit us up with an invitation to a timeshare presentation for an hour in exchange for a $100 gift card. We declined, but only after several attempts to overcome our objections, which started to become annoying. Our room (531) was modern and very clean. The carpeting looked new. The hard floors were all natural stone, like a sealed travertine or marble. The kitchen and bathroom counters were granite and the tub enclosure was marble. Everything in the kitchen was modern and full size; 4 burner range with oven, microwave over the stove, large stainless steel sink with garbage disposal, about 20 square foot refrigerator, a bagel sized toaster, full size blender, dishwasher, drip coffee maker, and plenty of surprisingly good ground coffee. I was surprised to find J Henkles knives. The dinette table was round and substantial -- about 4' in diameter -- with the top made of polished marble. The bathroom had a foldout lit magnifying mirror -- greatly appreciated -- we didn't have to lean over the counter to get a good look at our faces. One of its joints was loose and made it wobble. We fixed it lol. There were 5 nice 60" bath towels, along with a few hand towels and wash cloths and a bath mat. They also provided two big and two regular striped pool towels. The soap provided was both face and body, scented with lemon verbena. The shampoo smelled nice and did the job. There was no conditioner. There was plenty of hot water, maintained at a constant temperature. The toilet was so low, you don't need to bring your squatty stool. The king size bed was very comfortable, with two flat sheets tucked in so tight, the bottom sheet came out as we pried back the top sheet. It had a light-weight lofty comforter with a white jacquard coverlet over it. We had four pillows of varying densities. The mattress was a Serta Perfect Sleeper Plush Presidential. There was a flat screen TV atop the dresser. The pull-out couch was firm and covered in a very tough nylon fabric. In front of it was a wrought iron and glass table. Adjacent to it was an oversized easy chair. Across was a wood cabinet with a flat screen TV perched on it. It appeared to be about 55". There needed to be an ottoman with the couch and chair. After a long drive to get here, we want to put our feet up. Plus, t's hard to relax and watch tv with feet on the floor. The balcony had two lounge chairs and a small cocktail table The end tables, both in the living and bedroom had beautiful designer table lamps. There was a paucity of art in the suite. The living room had one panoramic photo of a local hill and valley. A stunning photo, deserves to be properly centered on the wall, not positioned way too far to the left. The thermostat maintained a comfortable temperature throughout our stay. The bedroom had a lighted ceiling fan with two pull chains to operate the light and fan speed. The closet in the bedroom had extra pillows and a blanket, as well as hangers, a fold-out prop for a suitcase, and a safe. At 3AM the first night, a loud squeal woke me up. It sounded like a smoke alarm. I got up and stumbled around looking for the source. No joy. Eventually it stopped on its own. The next night it happened again. This time my husband heard it first and managed to trace its source to the bathroom. Get this: it stopped when he flushed the toilet. It's as if there was some weird pressure thing in the pipes or even some kind of purposeful alarm having to do with water pressure. Whatever it was, it was obnoxious and about as loud as a smoke alarm. Luckily he and I easily fell back asleep after silencing it. We received a phone call the first morning, trying to persuade us to go to the presentation. They even upped the ante with a week free stay. I've been coming here off an on since the 90s. I remember it being nicer back then, but overall I still enjoy staying here. The Good: There are wonderful views from the resort itself even if you don't manage to snag a great view from your room. Compared to other Diamond Resorts I've stayed in, this one has much better Wi-fi, and much nicer furniture and room. Some other Diamond Resort places we stayed at had unusable wi-fi, old furniture, stains, etc. Our rooms here have always been quite nice. Good amenities on location. There are some activities (they were better years ago) throughout the week. There's a small game room. They have BBQs, etc. The room itself has a full kitchen (which is typical, I think for time share units). The Bad: Our A/C never turned on. I didn't call about it because mostly it was managable. The weather was nice. We received 3 calls during the week trying to sell us on a presentation. We politely declined each time. Way too aggressive sales here. Not a fan! The Ugly: There is no room cleaning unless you ask for it and you have to call down to get replacements for everything because of it. You'll run out of TP and your trash will overfill because there's no daily cleanings. i know some of this is a post-coivd thing, but it's pretty annoying. The day we were checking out, the housekeeping staff tried to enter our room before we were checked out. This is NOT OK! We had a nice stay here during their "off" season. The room had a beautiful view if you are standing up; however, sitting on the balcony was pointless - all we could see is wall and roof. The kitchen was very nice and well stocked. We were able to find all the cooking implements that we needed. It is good that the kitchens are so functional, because the food options at the resort are quite limited. The bed was extremely uncomfortable. By the end of our stay we both had terrible backaches. Also, this is primarily a timeshare property so expect at least a little sales pitch at some point during your stay. We might stay here again, but it would mainly because this is one of the only places to stay in the area that has kitchens. read more

I stayed here with my friend for a weekend and it was the worst experience ever. For the prices that this hotel or "time-share" charges, it's not worth it. Front desk staff is rude and don't care about doing their jobs. The rooms are very old and outdated, with stains on walls and filthy carpeting. I was actually appalled when I saw my room. Plus my bed had used sheets from previous guests that the housekeeping staff didn't bother to change. Bathroom had previous guest hairs all over the sink and tub. Not only were the rooms a disappointment, the housekeeping staff was rude when asked for extra towels. My friend and I were uncomfortable passing through the lobby because we were approached and harassed by the concierge who tried to sell us a timeshare, when we refused, the concierge staff became very rude. The town Avila is alright, there is not much around and you pretty much need a car to get around to go shopping and find restaurants to eat. The only food option the hotel is vending machines, that barely worked during our visit. Oh, also the elevators at the hotel are old and very slow. And for the size of the hotel, the elevators are also pretty small so that is not convenient for the many guests that stay there or if someone has a lot of luggage with them. There is a small swimming pool and hot tub and gym at the hotel premise but we didn't utilize those facilities. We really thought this was going to be our new place to stay when we visit, but it's just not it. Our first stay here was in February and we had an amazing experience. We were so pleased, we literally booked our next stay the first night we checked in after our first stay! Five stars for our first stay here in February! Minus 3 starts for our return stay last week. When I booked our second stay back in February, I requested the same room again for our second stay. Someone got back to me and said they'd try their best. Our first stay in February was only 2 days, and we returned last week to stay for 6 additional days. When we checked in last week, I noticed as Kyle wrote our room number on our key card holder, we did not get the same room. I brought up that I had requested a specific room and he said he's see what he could do and to call later. So, when we got up to our room, I called down and this time I spoke to a very nice female. She told me that unfortunately the room I requested was not available, but to call down the next morning at 9am and ask to speak to Lisa, the manager, and she would help us get moved as the people in the room we requested were checking out that day. Awesome! We went to bed that night, without unpacking or using anything in the room, thinking we would be moving in the morning. I called down the next morning asking to speak to Lisa at 9:15 and Eileen at the front desk answered. She started playing the game of "we don't know when Lisa will be in" when I asked for Lisa. So, l went ahead and explained the situation to Eileen and she could not have been more unhelpful and full of it. She went from if we move you, you'll have to pay a fee, to there are no rooms to move to, to we don't know when Lisa will be here, to telling us if we were members she could move us, to also trying to justify the crappy room we did get. Then she told me to come to the lobby to speak to her. So, I did. And once again she bounced around from excuse to excuse. My husband knew I was upset and he told Eileen to tell Lisa to call us on my cellphone as soon as she got in. Eileen tried her excuses again and my husband flat out told her, "I don't care, have Lisa call us". Later in the day, Lisa did call us. Lisa was very kind and patient and did take the time to explain. However, she also lied to me. Lisa told me, the reason she could not move us is because they only had 3 housekeepers that day for the whole hotel. Funny, I stopped to talk to a housekeeper right after that phone call and she told me they were fully staffed. So for that, we will never return. We spent over $2,400 to stay here between February and March and this was how we were treated. I UNDERSTAND that room requested cannot always be fulfilled. I can't be upset about that. But, they lied many many times and even held not being members over our heads in order to not move us. If you guys don't want regular hotel guests who are not members, take your rooms off Expedia! Also, during this stay, we did plan to become members before we had this experience. Once this happened, I literally had to unplug the room phone to get them to stop calling us trying to get us to come down and listen to their timeshare BS. Oh, also, the morning of our check out, Housekeeping BARGED into our room without knocking WHILE I WAS CHANGING IN THE LIVING ROOM and just stood there and told me the front desk told them we had already checked out and didn't even apologize for barging in and was actually quite rude. read more

First night, Friday was great, Saturday and Sunday was a different story. We have the studio in the 3rd floor. The room with the view of the stucco wall. The room above us about 2:30 in the afternoon rearranged the furniture, ran across the room about 20 times and SLAMED the slider about 21 times. I think they wore bricks as shoes too. I ended up being "that" person that called the front desk. Sunday the fire alarm went off. We hustled to get shoes and a jacket, our personnel items and left the rest. As we walk out into the hallway we see other guest. Soon we see one of the maintenance crews. " false alarm." Okay. Back to the room. Just as I put our stuff away...another alarm. Did I mention these alarms are so ear piercing that after they stop you still hear them. 4 more times this fire alarm went off. Now come Sunday morning at 12:30. In the AM!!! Another one. Wait...I stand corrected. 2 more alarms!!! We will not be coming back to this place. I hope they get this problem figured out. read more

Avila beach is a 10 minute walk away. Port saint luis is a mile away. Beautiful place, friendly people. It's not a "hotel" more like condos. No room service, etc, etc. read more

Recently stayed here. I used it as a time share. Location, location, location is what this place has going for it. It is in an awesome place and has a great view of Avilla Beach. The grounds are well maintained and there is plenty of parking. The furniture in the rooms could use updating, but resort is clean. The shower pressure is adequate and the shower head has multiples stream types to help out. I will reiterate what others have said, the walls are thin and people in the hall, other rooms and balconies can be heard talking. The noise of others, potentially my own conversations as well, is my chief and only complaint. I will certainly stay here again. read more

Stayed here for my birthday weekend! Check in was a little slow but front desk told us they were understaffed. We arrived pretty late and all restaurants were closed. We were able to go to Walmart and cook a frozen pizza with our full kitchen...life saver! The hotel room was nice and big and comfortable. The lodge with games and ability to rent movies was also pretty awesome. The hot tub was great and it was a pretty peaceful stay. Free parking was a bonus also! I'm knocking one star because the tv was not set up and we had to figure out how to do it on our own. I also wish they had room service or breakfast available but there are plenty of restaurants nearby. read more

Only a spectacular location featuring a nice pool and lawn area overlooking the town and ocean and friendly counter/maintenance staff spare this time-share resort (with some hotel space) from getting a 1-star. The seemingly freshly painted salmon-colored stucco albeit with haphazardly applied two shades of blue trim paint was the only sign that anyone is reinvesting in this old hotel. It hid a dated, seedy interior that included poor hallway lighting, tired carpets, depressing old furnishings especially in the common areas, a large vacant restaurant area, and two tiny, excruciatingly slow elevators (picture an old European hotel). At times, the hallways had the strong stench of disinfectants. Four night's stay did not entitle us to any room service or clean towels. What became very irritating was that you couldn't avoid the Time Share Sales Staff in the Lobby who would repeatedly either give you a compliment or ask an innocuous question ("Just check in?) so as to engage you into their sales pitch. Our triangular oceanside patio was so tiny, two "little people" barely would fit on it and at 5'10" I couldn't catch a glimpse of the ocean - only stucco and the sky above. We had driven by the facility months earlier and the front entrance was then blocked by construction. Nothing had changed when we arrived, and no work was being done during our weekday time there. Ownership (Diamond Resorts?) must be short of cash or letting this facility go? While I met several friendly, happy customers (who particularly love Avila Beach), I kept pondering why anyone would ever invest their hard-earned money on something like this? Sad. That said, I have experienced worse... For us, it was just a place to sleep, but would never return. read more

I'm giving San Luis Bay a 4 star rating due to the customer service alone. When we arrived on Saturday afternoon the first thing I noticed when I got out of the car, was the gorgeous view. For those with any health problems such as bad knees, you may want to be dropped off at the entrance as there is an incline from the parking lot. As we walked toward the entry I wasn't sure if we were in the right spot as the entrance does not take you directly to the lobby, instead you enter a room with the rolling carts for luggage, that leads out another door to another room, and then after you make a right you will be walking toward the lobby and the front desk, just a weird set up all together, but I took into account that they are in the middle of doing some renovations. The front desk clerk was very friendly and we had a clerk (I feel badly I've forgotten her name) who went over the hot spots of Avila and gave us several tickets for 2 for 1 pine pairings at different wineries in the area. Once we were checked in, we went to the elevators, they are small elevators so if you have claustrophobia be warned. We had reservations for suites, what a nice set up, you walk into a kitchen unit which comes equipped with a stove, refrigerator, plates, silverware, cups and so on, the room itself had a king size bed and a sleeper sofa, so a total of 4 could sleep per room. The bed itself was quite comfy, the sleeper sofa not so much...wow what a noisy, barely padded piece of garbage, when my cousin Sara went over to the other room, my cousin Jane told me to call dibs on the bed ... Poor Sara came back to the room late that night and was left with the travesty considered a bed. The next day I told her she should've just slept on the couch cushions, if looks could kill. The Pool closes at 11, so the girls went down for late night swimming, while My cousin Jane and I sat by the fire-pit and chatted. Quiet hotel and quite reasonable for what we got , each room was $160 for a night, while You might think that's steep, you have to realize we had a full on kitchen, to use. We stayed here for one night over Easter weekend and it was great. I have to to say I was thoroughly impressed with how clean everything was; especially in the kitchen! It was a quick trip for us but it gave us everything we needed. The location is perfect because you don't get stuck in the little downtown area and they have plenty of parking. I wouldn't recommend this place as a romantic getaway as you could hear kids running up and down the stairwell but it's a nice place for a quick in and out trip. Had a great stay. The studio had full kitchen, nice and spacious. Some changes to normal service due to covid. Staff is friendly and helpful. Very close to the beach. The hotel sits on a hill and there is no actual walkway down. We found it easier to just drive down to the beach. read more

So sad to be leaving a review like this, but after about 3 weeks of not being contacted by management, I felt like it needed to happen. My husband and I love this place. We've even considered investing in a property at San Luis Bay. Every time has been fantastic except for our most recent visit. And even then, things were still pretty good, we just received very poor service from the concierge. We emailed the management to let them know, but after a few days of not hearing back, we decided to message them on Facebook. Again, it has now been nearly three weeks and we haven't been contacted. Very disappointing. This is what we sent to management... "Hi there. I wanted pass along an experience I had to the management staff of the San Luis Bay Inn. I wanted to give it a few days to make sure I wasn't overreacting to the situation, but it is still bothering me, so I wanted to report it. My husband and I checked in Thursday night; our good family friends have a "time share" at San Luis and when they are unable to use it, they offer it to our family. We have been to San Luis several times and absolutely love it! On Friday afternoon, we received a message on our room's answering machine from the concierge's desk, regarding some dining discounts. After playing volleyball and swimming for a while, we approached the concierge's desk on the way back to our room. We were helped by Dawn; she greeted me and asked how she could help me. I explained that we had received a message to stop by. She asked, "Who is we?" I realized at this time, my husband was looking at something in the lobby and wasn't right behind me. I pointed him out to Dawn and said "oh, my husband and me." She looked surprised and said "Husband? You don't look old enough to be married." I thought it was just a compliment so I laughed it off and said, "Well thank you but believe me, I'm old enough to be married." But she wouldn't drop it. She said "What, 18?" At this point, I started to get somewhat annoyed. My hair was all messy from swimming and I didn't have a stitch of makeup on. My whole family looks a few years younger than they are, but I don't think that's a bad thing! The other concierge sensed that I was becoming a little bit bothered and jumped in saying how great it was that I looked younger than I actually am, and how when I'm middle-aged, it would be such a blessing. I politely agreed with her and tried to move Dawn on from the age conversation to addressing the message left on our phone. But again, she wouldn't drop it. "Okay, so you're what then, maybe 25? Like can I even put you down for wine tasting?" At this point, I was about ready to whip out my ID to show her how old I was. I hadn't told her up to this point because honestly, why did it matter? It wasn't any of her business how old I was. I finally told her I was 23 and would like to know what the message was all about. At this point, my husband walked up and she pointed to him and said "Well how old is he? Same age?" My husband looked quite confused and told her he was almost 28. She raised her eyebrows and gave us a somewhat disapproving look. :/ She then asked how long we had been married for. I got married young. I know that's not typical, but I was very confident in my decision and haven't regretted it once. When I told her we had been married for almost two years, again, we got a somewhat skeptical raising-of-the-eyebrows from Dawn. I am not some livid guest who is never coming back to San Luis Bay. Like I said, we love it here and have considered investing in a property there in the next few years. But if that had been my first experience there, I probably would not be coming back based on how we were treated by Dawn. I don't want to get her in trouble, but to be honest, it felt very disrespectful. My husband and I do not get offended easily, but we were pretty offended by this situation. It was not fun to be badgered about my age/how long we had been married for around other people, especially when I wasn't looking my best. Location is really nice, I biked to downtown in four minutes, I also walked to downtown in 12 minutes, walking is really easy, you need to cross a small highway and a bridge but there is sidewalk. Parking was plenty, and check-in was very easy. They also gave me 10% coupon for the restaurants. Hotel is sitting on a beautiful Cliff, landscape was amazing, there are chairs on front lawn that you can sit and enjoy the sunset. Pool was open and heated, there were many kids playing inside. Room is a little bit outdated but it was very clean, I enjoyed the comfort of the bed. There's a nice table at the middle, there's also a nice couch, and there's a kitchen with all basic equipment. TV worked fine, it has all HBO channels and cable. Internet also worked fine. My balcony had a partial Oceanview, only problem was my downstairs neighbor was smoking weed. You can also rent DVDs for three dollars. There were also vending machines. Room can use a little update but it was very clean, bathroom was very wide and hot water worked very well. Beautiful place. I love having a full kitchen with kids. I asked for a view .We have a partial view and roof. The grounds are beautiful with an amazing views and chairs. They said the pool is heated but it is not. We were looking forward to swimming but it was too cold. There were only dirty towels too. I do like the idea of a kid pool but that's too cold too. Avoid at all costs. I'd heard about the shabby accommodations they put you in if you book as if it's a hotel (they put you in the least desirable units -- so bad they're a joke) so I had hoped to avoid this by renting from a timeshare owner. The owners book 13 months in advance and have nice accommodations. I rented from a timeshare owner and paid top dollar for "his" week. He always books 13 months in advance, always gets an ocean view, and all but promised me an ocean view. Hey if we hadn't gotten an ocean view, it would have been slightly disappointing but fine. No. We got stuck in what has to be one of the worst units in the place. I guarantee they would not have put the owner in this hell hole, and I bought and paid for "his" week -- in full and up front, so this dungeon they stuck us in was "take it or leave it." I can't advise you strongly enough DON'T STAY HERE. Our view was not of ocean, or golf course, or pool or even parking lot. No. Our view was of wall. In our face. A wall. Right in front of the balcony which would be pointless to sit on. Unless you like staring at a wall. To the right was another wall, which has a hallway and window, so passersby can peek in and see what we're doing. Yes, so nice. Because of these walls, it was fricking stifling. At the coast, you ask? Yes. You can open a window a bit, but the walls prevent any sort of breeze. The walls do provide excellent echoing and sound amplification though, so you can hear all the shrieks from the pool and women screaming at their kids. Look at a wall, listen to the pool noises, and sit on your stifling balcony where there is no movement of air. Yeah. The mattress on the bed is mushy, broken down, and to say it's uncomfortable is an understatement. The hall on the third floor stinks like fish and that smell seeped into the unit somewhat. The mattress on the sofa bed is the unmitigated nightmare that sofa bed mattresses are. The unit is extremely small. I've stayed in these type of condo units before and know what to expect. Something like an apartment. This is more like a slightly larger than normal hotel "suite" with woefully inadequate kitchenette. The table has only three chairs. There's no laundry in the rooms. The fridge is tiny, bigger than a dorm size fridge but smaller than an apartment fridge. We brought our food for the week and there's nowhere to keep it. There is no cabinet space for food either. There are a few small cabinets, but they have stuff in them. No room for your food. In terms of cookware, the room was very feebly stocked. Check-in was a drag, nominally at 430 but this horrible room wasn't ready till after five, and while we were standing around in the lobby with our luggage and food on a cart, waiting for this unpleasant, inadequate room to be cleaned, we got a very pushy and sneaky hard sell to buy a timeshare. On purpose? I don't know. Other people seemed to be getting their rooms promptly. Maybe it was only special people like us who get the hard sell and shoved into the worst room they offer. When I asked politely why we'd gotten such a crappy room, I was given a made up excuse that the owner must have made his reservation"late." No I saw the original reservation. It was made 13 months in advance, and although we "bought" his week,I guarantee you they would not have put him in this dungeon. By the way, if they think this shoddy treatment and the fourth-class accommodations make me MORE likely to buy their time share, they'd better think again. We'd thought, going in, maybe we'd buy. Now we are sure we won't. When we approached the room, there were literally piles of trash outside the door, which housekeeping hadn't removed yet. The room was passably clean. The room was so horrible all we wanted to do was get out of it again, even after traveling many hours to get there. Our daughter went to the pool for a few minutes, only to be told at 6 pm she needed to get out so they could clean it and put in chemicals. How about doing that before the pool opens or after it closes? I've never stayed at a place that kicked you out in the middle of the day. So we went in the "game room" -- a ping pong table, an air hockey table (out of order), and a couple of old overpriced video games. Ping pong was fun I guess. Elevators are ridiculously small and slow. At least one doesn't seem to work quite right. Internet is indeed the speed of dial-up. It's faster to use your cell phone as a mobile hot spot than to attempt loading 2014's webpages on a 1996 connection. What else? Various lights in the unit don't work. Decor is hideous. I can't emphasize strongly enough: don't stay here. Don't think that renting one of the nicer units from an owner will earn you a decent room. They'll put you "wherever"and since you've paid cash months ago, there's not a thing you can do about it, except take all this unhappy energy and put it to a positive use by warning others not to make the same mistake. read more

Be aware of their crazy hidden resort fee. Nobody ever cleaned our room, the Wi-Fi was terrible and even worse was the bed.

This hotel is very beautiful! Me and my Wife have stayed here multiple times over the years. Its our all time favorite hotel. Even though they don't offer certain amenities and don't provide housekeeping, every time we have come here we find the staff to be very friendly, the rooms and facility to be very clean and the location to always be above our expectations. This is always our number 1 choice when we come to Avila - Our favorite hotel hands down. Highly recommend! read more

Just don't stay here! False advertising! If you book through any website you will get a room with a wall !! It's a time share, the company is only using us to fill the old stupid time shares! Somebody needs to take over this hotel. Oh almost forgot , no air conditioning and when you want to talk to someone at the front desk they just talk over you. Please stay elsewhere. read more

The good: good price, clean, great kids pool 1.5 feet deep, nice big pool game room and jacuzzi. Easy 5 minute walk downhill (uphill to get back) to town (maybe not for people with walking issues). The bad: parking lot view but also see mountains and can lean to see ocean. We checked in on Thursday and got two rooms and they said since many are owner units, no view rooms available. Very aggressive time share lady but she does have 10 percent dining coupon. Suite has sofa bed, queen or king bed, 4 person dining table and full kitchen. Cleaning service only every few days so coffee not replenished. Go to avila valley barn ( fun tractor, Apple picking, delish baked goods and produce.... feed goats... adorable). Alsongula hut for dessert was fun. Overall avila is a lovely weekend with kids. read more

This place is beautiful and the staff was so sweet. The room has a beautiful view of the ocean. You're so close you can here the ocean from your room. It is a 5 minute walk from all the little shops and restaurants. It's seriously close to everything. The only complaint I have is the shower har hair in the wall and you can't really see it because of the color scheme of the wall. But when we turned the shower on lots of hair began to run down the wall. I was so disgusted. Other than that everything was wonderful and I would stay here again. read more
