Golf course in good shape priced well pace was excellent greens small but good shape they were a little slow

My husband and I booked a tee time at San Marcos Golf Course on Father's Day weekend. We chose an 11:00 AM tee time, which was significantly cheaper than the early morning tee times because it's usually in the 100+ degrees by then. We're used to it and we bring lots of cooling towels. The staff was pleasant and helpful. The driving range was limited to irons only during our visit, not sure why. The course was in great shape for the most part and the pace of play was ideal. There was no one in front of us or behind us pretty much the entire time. Food from the restaurant was decent. They provided a small "cooler" which is more like a small lunch bag for the drinks. The golf carts don't have coolers, which isn't a deal breaker, but a bit inconvenient especially since the lunch bag they gave us leaked and there wasn't a good spot for it in the cart. Regardless, we had a nice experience. We played all 18 holes and are excited to play again in the future! read more

Who wouldn't want to play at a historic course like this? Legends like Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Ronald Reagan, and even Al Capone once passed through its grand and glorious doors which adds a special kind of magic for an everyday golfer like me out on the fairways. Unlike many of the reviews I've seen, my experience was quite the opposite, in the best way. The course was in excellent condition, with some of the best greens I've ever played on in Arizona. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the pace of play was just right. We were never rushed from behind or held up by the group in front. The beer was cold, the food was hot, and honestly, I have no complaints. It was an amazing time from start to finish. read more

Let me start by saying that the "AL Capone" residence behind the 13th green is a magnificent home..........and NOT AL Capones former house. But I did get to meet the current owners. They are a wonderful couple that host a number of charitable events to help the community. Having said that, I do love playing San Marcos Golf Course. Not as pricey in the winter as some northern area courses and, for me, very playable. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were in great shape and my partner (ASU Club golfer) Shor a respectable 76. Hahahaha. No. I was no way near that score! Enjoyed a great hot dog before I got on the course and even with a 12:45pm start time, we finished by 5:00pm. Go check out San Marcos. It's a good bargain and you can see AL Capones house up close! read more

My husband golfed here twice and I tagged a long. It's a beautiful course, and in an otherwise suburban area different that Scottsdale. I enjoyed the terrain and watching him play. It's kind of pricey, but it is a resort style course. If you can book through the hotel you may find a deal. We also didn't get great tee times as last minute bookers, but it definitely satisfied the golf desire in a nice location. read more

I hope to one day finish this round of golf where everyone is constantly hitting into my fairway because everything is overly packed in on the back 9. 18 hole course tucked in Downtown Chandler. First grass fairway course in AZ. Fairways can be a little tight. Good sand traps. Greens can be a little inconsistent. Fairways are decent most of the time. Green fees are a little higher than other comparable courses. Stay for breakfast after your round, great prices and great food. The restaurant even has a walleye dinner special a couple of Fridays a month. read more

Might be a unfair review, since they recently re-seeded the grass. It was cart path only, so I recommend walking until they open up the course for carts. This is a simple keep it in the fairway and you'll be fine course. Has some dog legs, and water hazards spreaded through out the course. I was getting frustrated through the day since it was cart path only, and of course I decided to hit the ball to where I would have to walk back and forth the longest distance. My fault for not driving it straight. The holes are little on top of each other, so you will have a great opportunity of trying out the next fairway before you even play that hole yet. Hey you guys. San Marcos GC is like an aging Las Vegas showgirl. It used to be great, but it's now poorly conditioned, expensive, and aged. It is indefensible to have bunkers that have some semblance of sand, some bunkers that are pure dirt, some bunkers that get watered like grass, and some bunkers that are bone dry. They are an absolute embarrassment. It is indefensible to not have a driving range, and it's inconceivable to take this course seriously until it does. There are multiple ways to address this, like re-routing a couple of holes, but they would all require foresight, planning, and spending a buck or two. It's clear that the Grand Dame of old town Chandler needs a complete makeover. She's a grandma now, and should act like one. read more

Talk about a wonderful start to Valentines weekend! San Marcos GC is it! They have a lovely 9-holes and breakfast special we enjoyed. The course is in great shape. At an 8 am tee time on the back nine, pace of play was easy. We finished in an hour and a half! Then we sat down to an awesome breakfast - Huevos Rancheros, outside on the patio, with a beautiful view. Kudos to the chef! Could be the best Huevos I've ever had! read more

My fiancé plays here all the time - embarrassingly enough this was the first time he let me play with him because his boys weren't available on a Friday morning and he and I were both off work however, I will definitely be back! Now I see why he goes all the time. Dave, one of the course marshals, was so awesome too! He had his beautiful service dog in the cart with him, and she was such a sweetheart! I even got to do tricks with her after we finished our round. Drinks on the course were affordable and everything was well kept. Thanks for a great round! read more

This has been our "home" course for some time as we live nearby. We are always treated well there & Nick in the pro shop is always helpful & accommodating. If we eat in the restaurant after a round he often sits with us and discusses our round & what we might have struggled with. Tonight we had the fish fry in the restaurant & the two ladies working in the restaurant were delightful to talk to & are animals lovers so we had a great conversation. Ali the cook hand makes the batter for her fish fry & she's got it down to perfection-great job! Super comfortable atmosphere all the way around. read more

As one of the oldest golf courses in the Phoenix market this is a decent course in the heart of Chandler. The course was in pretty good shape for end of July. The pace of play was extremely slow which was extremely frustrating especially with 100 degree weather. The other frustrating part was we did not realize we paid for a back 9 and breakfast but went out on the front and never got our breakfast. read more

My son was in town visiting and I haven't golfed here in years, so I figured we needed to brush up. Low and behold the grass and greens were in great shape. The Marshall told us they were running behind due to an event going on, but again to our surprise they got us out on time. if you have time or are in the area. I recommend giving this course a try. Very cool course with a posh mid-century modern feel and good value. It was in really good shape and has open forgiving fairways. However the greens are fast and sloping with well placed bunkers so though the fairways may be open you'll need to bring a solid short game. Was a very good course I'll play again. read more

Place looked promising...given I live locally. Today my experience with my pal and I were terrible. We got paired up with a great couple who we had a blast with...until we got rode up on by this pony tailed Marshall who thought he was the sheriff in town. The guy never got off my ass! The course was in pretty good shape and all 12 of us were having a good time. Until the 8th hole! The ranger approached us and told us we were behind. He then hollered again because we weren't moving fast enough for him to the tee box I guess. Then he felt the need to make a third comment after one of us hit! At this point I told him we heard him the first time and asked him to leave! He talked to his boss and said I threatened him by pointing my club at him! What a joke! We finished the hole and had to wait almost 3-5 min to tee off due to the group in front of us. How were we behind? Maybe this ranger takes his "power" to serious! On the turn, the starter even said great job. 2 hrs. 5 min as we passed him. Me and my other 11 players will NEVER play this course again! read more

Terrible customer service and condones players from groups behind you to hit into you and make threats against you. This happened to us. We were constantly being hit into by group behind us as it was slow in front of us. The group eventually tried to pass us and one of their balls came within 2 ft of my head. We asked them to not hit into us and they proceeded with vulgarities and physical violence. I called pro sho shop to have someone come out which they did send someone. They talked to group and then told us they would not hit into us anymore. Well the group continued to hit into us. Their Marshall observed This and they did not remove group from course. We were physically threatened and also were at risk of harm from their golf balls but they did not remove group. After the round I went into pro shop to talk to management. After re explaining everything he proceeded to say well the group said we threatened them. How on earth is the group playing in front now the instigator. We did not threaten them and I asked management to think logically. 1. The group behind us into us multiple times 2. That same group physically threatened us 3. Group continually hit into us 4. My group is the one who called the or shop 5. The group that is playing in front and is also the one who called for assistance is most likely not the problem Well management said well they complained about us after we called and asked for help So if you feel like not having the course enforce basic golf etiquette and have your physical body in jeopardy go play this course. As for myself I will never be back no will my group of 15 that used to play there. read more

Loved this course. Downtown chandler has really changed and this is now become a great option for East valley golf. It was in great shape, forgiving but very lush and smaller greens make for tough approaches. I will be playing it a ton in the future. read more

I did not enjoy my outing at San Marcos. There were no colored stakes in the fairway letting you know how far you are from the green. Very few of the sprinkler heads contained yardage markers. When I mentioned this to a Marshall later he snarkily told me I should have GPS. Really? We paid $70 a round and don't think it's too much to expect yardage markers. Every single hole had multiple sand traps bordering and surrounding the green. Several had water as well. There is a water canal that runs throughout the property which is identified by yellow stakes. Never knew how far we were from the water. The tee markers only told you the par. No indication of yardage for the hole and no pictoral description of the hole. Nothing on the scorecard showing a picture of the hole either. All in all, a frustrating day. read more

Played at San Marcos for the first time in about 12 years last weekend. I had forgotten how completely interesting the routing and the types of holes that they had. Playing partners told me that they had closed for a period of time to do some upgrades and it definitely shows. The greens were in very good shape, but didn't seem to hold shots very well. However, putts rolled true. I was only in a couple of the bunkers and was pleased with the sand in them. Definitely a course that one can use just about every club in the bag for. read more

I'm new to golf and I went here to work on my game and have a little fun. I went in and was treated like a pro from the gentleman inside named Steve. I got out in the driving area and was trying my best when Steve came out and took some time to give me some pointers on my swing and also got me another basket of balls to practice with. Have played this course once before. However, I am not sure I will play it again after today... I am an avid golfer, approx 8 hcp. Today, course was identified as cart path only due to recent overseeding. I absolutely understand this. However, on hole #11 I hit an errant shot to the right which landed quite a ways in the fairway for hole #10. So, I had the choice to take the cart path to the right against oncoming cart traffic and keep the pace of play moving for us and those behind us. Or, take the cart path to the left then have to walk 150 yards to my ball then back to the cart, ultimately drastically slowing play for everyone. I do not mind the walking, I was more concerned with the pace of play. Therefore, we took the cart path to the right. Our shots continued to play down the right side of the fairway until we reached the green. At the green, there was no cart path connecting the two sides of the hole. At the green sat the marshal. As a courtesy, I told the marshal that we were sort of stuck on the right side due to the cart path only ruling. I asked where he would prefer for us to cross to the appropriate cart path. He responded that he would prefer for us to return all the back to the tee box and take the appropriate cart path from there since it is cart path only. It wasn't necessarily what he said, but how he said it. He was rude and disrespectful. So, I drive all the way back as he directed... Ultimately an additional 7-8 minutes to do so, slowing play for us and the groups backed up behind us. Once I drove all the way around, I still had to play my ball which took a few more minutes. I wasn't going to rush my shots after being sent the long way around. I was being courteous to the course and the players behind us by taking the shortest route to my ball, and by asking the marshal instead of just driving across the fairway wherever I felt like doing so. One of the primary jobs of a course marshal is to ensure the course maintains the appropriate pace of play. This marshal did not do that today, he thought it was a more important to flex his course authority. As far as course conditions, the course was ok. Greens were burnt and muddy in places. There was a lot of soggy turf, I'm sure mostly due to the overseeding. Pretty flat and open. Definitely not a place where I would spend my time and money again if there is a chance of dealing with that marshal again. Obviously I shouldn't have let this individual ruin my experience, but I did. Pretty disappointed... read more

So to start the course is in pretty good shape. We booked on Golf Now an 11:58AM tee time and as always arrived at the course early. Today we anticipated traffic and were there about 40 minutes early to find the course with little activity. In fact, we were told that no one had teed off for over an hour. There were no tee times behind us either for over an hour. When we checked in we were told that because of the way we booked our tee time, they would not let us out early, even though there was no one on the course. Again, the explanation of this according to the guy in the pro shop (we were told his name was John) was because of the way our tee time was booked. We are regular golfers well aware of the space of tee times and the importance of pace of play when a course is busy. BUT today San Marcos was not busy at all before or after our tee time. We had to wait the entire 40 minutes in order to tee off which seems to be extreme. We were told that this John in the pro shop is the only one that does this. While we understand rules of a course are set up in order to accommodate everyone, the websites most always say to be at least 1/2 hour early to be ready to go early in case tee times cancel. SO, our question, and our frustration, is why would someone make golfers wait when the course if empty? It seems ridiculous, and this guy was in fact rude about it. It appears that this guy has a real problem with golfers booking on line, so if that is the case, and this is the way golfers are treated, why advertise on Golf Now? The rest of the staff were very nice and understood our frustration. We are residents of AZ and now that all of the winter visitors, spring training visitors, and spring break visitors are gone, their bread and butter are the residents. Nice way to treat them. Don't waste your time here... Course is so so but the customer service and grounds crew are awful! We literally had guys mowing within 20 feet of us while we were playing. Seems that mowing is more important than their guests. Never again. read more

The course itself was in good condition. Green fairways and decent greens. A few of the greens need more work, but overall this course was good for the $60 we paid. This is an old school course, so the play can be a little slow. Old school meaning at least two massive traps at EVERY green. Approach to the green is very limited (maybe 12 yards wide on most) requiring you to be very accurate. I haven't had this many sand shots (8) in many, many years! A drainage ditch comes into play on about 5 holes, requiring good strategy to avoid them. They have a "driving range" sort of. You actually hit plastic balls at a distance of no more than 125 yards. Overall, I feel this is a nice course for the price in peak season and will certainly return soon! Additionally, every employee we dealt with was very helpful! read more

Overall this is a decent course. Very challenging with lots of trees, water drainage canal on about 4 or 5 holes, and big sand bunkers near greens. Oh about the greens, effing horrible...fairways were greener. A little pricey for satisfactory course. One thing really stood out, super friendly staff! We pulled up to the club drop off and although there was 3 workers there, none of them attempted to help get our clubs from the car. Once we parked and got to our clubs there was 4 workers non of which offered to put the clubs on the cart until we already had place them there and secured the clubs. We checked in and saw that there were 8 carts lined up on the first tee box. We were told by the marshall that this would not be an issue as he was going to stay on top of things. We started our round about 10 minutes late. When we did tee off and started out round, Each shot was after a few minutes wait over the ball. When we got to the 3rd hole which was a par 3, there were 4 groups of 4. This is when one of the workers (not the marshall) came around and said the course was backed up and just "overbooked". The Marshall came around when we were finishing the 4th hole. He said the pace of play is "a little slow" maybe a 4 1/2 hr round. We pointed out that two of the groups a few in front of us were each at least 1 hole behind the group ahead of them. He said one of the groups was 1/2 hole behind, although there was no one on the par 3 a few holes ahead. He said he would talk to them about speeding up. We also pointed out that they were "in a partying mood" as they were yelling and celebrating all the way down the fairway. They were also taking multiple shots each time, without regard for the fact they were falling further back and holding up everyone. We continue this slow pace until pulling up to 8, which is another par three and there was 8 carts on the hole. This is when the Marshall showed up again and said the group was about half a hole behind! How does this even make sense. We questioned that and he got pissy and said to just get a refund if we were unhappy about the pace of place. He said to call the proshop and tell ask Nick about this. I did call and Nick said to come on in and he would get us a refund. We did, but to my surprise, he said he would refund us for 11 holes. It seemed like he was familiar with this from golfers so I wonder how many times they go through this. No apologies for the overbooking, pace of place or attitude given us by the marshall. I have NEVER in all my years of playing been treating so poorly by golf course staff with total disregard of doing their job to ensure all golfers have a somewhat decent day on the course. I have also never asked for a refund but after 2 hours to play 7 holes, couldn't stand to think of continuing for another 11 holes. We were on pace for a 5 hour round, for no particular reason that I could see other than overbooking and not managing the pace of place. I also found out that the Marshal (Mike Mcnulty) had just left and the course was now unattended for those trying to finish their round. We are Gilbert residents and have golfed San Marcos in the past with a similar (though not as bad) experience. We tried it again as friends told us that it was in really good shape. The management should be embarrassed to run the course in this manner. I felt bad for the out of towners we spoke to trying to get in a round of golf. We will NEVER consider going back and although we are just 2 people in a large sea of golfers, continuing to run a course this way will definitely affect the success of the San Marcos. I just noticed that Nick charged us for more holes than what we actually played. I guess I should not be surprised. Another awesome customer experience for San Marcos Golf Course Now I see he issued a rain check, rather than a refund as he said he would do. I specifically said I was not interested in a rain check as this was our 2nd time there with a similar experience. He said he could do a refund so I am kind of shocked he did a rain check, anyway. Awaiting a response from the course manager to get this resolved. read more
