an update...the hours were kind of sketchy and it seems the gift shop had been closed for a time. the most recent hours posted on the door are 1pm-3pm monday through friday (as of june 2016). they do not take credit cards/checks, cash only. there is some crocheted items, folk art looking pieces, hand made cards and paintings. it is hit and miss, but an interesting place to buy souvenirs and see some credible work . it is a small old shop and almost has a feel of the county fair competitions/exhibits. as you approach the main east gate, turn left where the visitor parking sign is. park below and walk up to the shop. you do not need to go inside the gate, but if you want to go to the museum inside you must. the museum is open tuesday and thursday only. 11am-2pm.

An easy 35 min drive from San Francisco and you reach San Quentin. The hobby shop is right before you get to the gate to enter the prison, park behind the shop in visitor parking. It's open M- F from 2pm-3pm. Lots of hand drawn art and paintings some done by death row inmates. Also there are belts, knitted items, and other crafts done by lifers. The man who works in the shop is friendly and explained that about 500 condemned inmates participate in the art program. 80% of the proceeds go to the artists and they are allowed to paint and draw as much as they like. Pretty interesting when you think about who made the art. Definitely a conversation piece.

I wish I had known about this place when we were driving through, I would have stopped for a unique souvenir. Now I'm bummed.

The inmate store was great. Bought a couple drawings. Also kind of sad but it is reality.

One of the women working there made us especially uncomfortable--she kept following us around and watching us as if we were stealing. There was no smile, no greeting, and overall just a very unfriendly atmosphere. When I mentioned at the end that a more welcoming attitude toward customers would go a long way, she seemed completely indifferent. Update: The experience got worse--the staff didn't even bother to properly wrap a candle, and by the time I got home, it was already broken. After reading other reviews on Yelp, I realized this doesn't seem like a one-off situation. Many others have had similar experiences, which makes it seem like this kind of unwelcoming behavior is a pattern.

We live in the neighborhood and love supporting our local businesses, but the few times I have been in this store left me wondering why I even try supporting a business that clearly doesn't want me shopping there. Today was the last time I will ever step foot in this store again. No greeting, just a hand reaching for the merchandise I was trying to buy. No thank you, either. Seriously, why have a shop if you can't be bothered offering any kind of basic customer service? People wonder why brick and mortar stores are dying...well, this is the reason.

Apparently the card didn't go through but I never received a notice even though I had a confirmation number and a delivery date. So I went into the store and they refused to give me the same price. They wanted to charge me 130.00 more. Even though I went right to the store when I finally found out it wasn't processed and I showed them my order and the price. They did nothing to help and their customer service sucked. I ended up going to the manufacture and ordering it again and I got it at the price I wanted and the manufacturer told me when it was going to be delivered and they wrapped the gift!! Your store is lovely, but there is room for improvement. Im writing not to make a big deal but you need to improve your service.

I hate to leave this review for a STORE (which I'm leaving on every store page, and then also…read morereporting as a complaint to the BBB), but the online platform and customer service has been particularly negative. We ordered a set of outdoor furniture to be delivered July 19th and chose a set specifically for the in-stock status as we need it for an event on the 25th. Today is that day. They are now saying it won't be ready until the 28th. When I reached out to customer service, they stated that there was one item (a rug) that was not in stock yet, so they'd be holding the WHOLE order until then to avoid a double-delivery, or, if we wanted, WE could eat a second delivery fee, which is insane to expect of us. I requested that they delivery everything ready to us by the 24th, and they refused as its "our policy." So, to clarify, their "policy" is that if we provide you a delivery date that is inaccurate, we expect you to just deal with the consequences of a delay; therefore, when ordered from Crate & Barrel, you essentially cannot ever plan around a delivery date--not even within a week of that date, since we are being pushed 9 days out. So, be sure when using this company, you either a) plan nothing for a long period of time afterward that depends on that order's delivery, or b) do what we will be doing and use Wayfair or Pottery Barn (which is where we'll go from now on) because when things like this happen, they help facilitate solutions, not resolve it with "sorry, it's our policy."

Easy, free parking. Accessible by train and ferry, besides car. Many different delicious food choices from delis to Greek to fancier fare, and The Rustic Bakery, which is where we ate. There is ample outdoor dining in sun and shade, besides indoor dining. Since we arrived at different times, everyone enjoyed browsing through the bookstore, and window shopping around the center. The center is very kid and dog friendly and there are lots of areas and activities for kids to explore and enjoy. It is also clean. The reason for one star off: there is a vibe that all of us felt, and others have said the same thing about the shopkeepers and some staff. I was wearing a top from one of the stores and jeans from another shop there. I popped into each store and was ignored by everyone in the first place and watched as if I might shoplift in the other store. I had only my phone in my pocket and no bag at all. It was uncomfortable-making and I left both stores, which were understandably empty. The place is delightful as a location for walking around with kids and dogs. Lots of food options. But the stores are not as friendly as other locations of the same brands.
