When I arrived, I had to look for someone to figure out how to be seated. I asked a server how I check in, and he stated I needed to go almost to the back of the restaurant. In retrospect, there was a sign indicating such as well but somehow it didn't register to me! The gal who greeted me at the desk and then seated me seemed a bit rushed--not very personable. There was an accordion player singing songs in Italian, which was a nice, unexpected touch. I'd been here a few times over the years, and my experience of the food was the same as tonight. It's traditional Italian but American-ized cuisine. Very old school. Like it had its heyday at one point, perhaps. Our 4-top table had the scallops, mixed seafood; two of us had the broiled salmon special. The gal who had the scallops twice said she wished they weren't breaded--just olive oil and garlic would have been great. You get a choice of carb of rice, mashed potato, and I chose the baked potato--can't remember the last time I had a baked russet potato. It was a bit overdone, and served with a ramekin of sour cream and chives. Mixed veggies side was thin small pieces of green beans, one small broccoli floret, one slice of carrot, 4 small quarters of zucchini. Bland, as was my slightly-overdone broiled salmon. Could have been worse. I wish I could understand the positive reviews this restaurant gets. Many reviews say the prices are great, but my dish with a Pellegrino and tip was $50. The restaurant's been in business since 1947. Honestly, overall uninspired and a bit tired by today's standards, in my experience.

Thank you Joe's for donating a meal and nourishing our group's evening rehearsal. The pesto pasta was my favorite -- so comforting and life sustaining :)

When you hear someone say the age-old phrase, "eat at Joe's!", they probably mean this place right here. Being around as long as it has, Joe's in San Rafael is one of those places that's either a smash hit or a dying star, and I can safely assure you that, for me at least, it was a delightful dining experience. For starters; this place has a classic dining atmosphere that reminds me of going out to eat with my grandparents. Very laid-back and relaxing, yet still vibrant and full of energy and life. On our most recent visit, they had live music playing, which helped enhance the mood just that little bit! The food on offer is rather stellar. Prices are a bit steep, but you get good bang for your buck. Chicken cutlets are nearly credit-card thin (which, for those who've never had cutlets before, that's exactly how you want it!) and the Meatball sandwich had a good meat-to-bread ratio, which can be hard to find when you use French Bread! Service was fast and friendly. A couple of our entrees came out wrong, and the issue was fixed in surprising speed considering how busy they were. As apology for the small bit of issue, they gave us our dessert for no charge! Joe's is a staple in the area for good reason. If you're around, be sure to stop by!

You can always count on a good meal at San Rafael Joe's. It a favorite of locals for birthday celebrations, anniversaries, and all kinds of special events that mark meaningful rites of passage. It has an old world Italian restraunt ambiance that is solidly ensconced in the community. Service is excellently delivered by professional waiters and waitresses. Treat yourself to a cocktail from the bar. This time it was a perfect Manhattan.

I finally was able to come and visit on the way back from camping and this hit the spot. I got here with my friend in the evening on a Monday night. The restaurant was about an hour from close, but that restaurant was completely full. Their service was all right, but I think they just had a full house. It's definitely a spot that I would take a date or enjoy a girls night out. It's by the water and has a beautiful view. The parking lot had a ton of spots, so don't worry too much unless you're coming on a busy weekend. The only issue that I had was that the bathroom is not on site. It is a little further of a walk, but it is something to know. Their bread and butter was delicious and I also got the oyster sampler platter as well as the clam chowder. Bread and butter is always delicious. The oysters hit the spot after camping and I can't remember which ones I got, but I'm already thinking about the next time I come back. The clam chowder is a little different than most, but it was creamy and a little soupier. I enjoyed the taste and it had fresh clams in it. When I first got it, I thought that I wouldn't be as full as I was at the end. The clam chowder does have toasted bread for an additional cost, but I chose to opt out with the bread and butter that I ordered. Thankfully, I had the bread to also dip in the soup. My friend got the clam spaghetti and she thought it was good but she wishes it was a little more saucy. In addition, she got the martini that came with an oyster, but she found the martini to be a little light. Lastly, I believe we got the peach panna cotta and it was to die for. I would definitely come back for this. Can't wait to try out Hog Island again when I'm in the area!

Since I had to get my watch fixed across the street from the restaurant at Gold Rush Jewelry today, I had decided to do my foodie thing and see if I have been missing out. My review here is strictly related to the pho that I had today. As long as the restaurant location was clean (and it certainly was), the food makes no difference to me whether I was served at the restaurant or the WH with the whole place painted in gold. Also I do make my own pho broth (aka liquid gold) at home, so I am all about searching for a different impressive interpretation. Back to the food, I took a picture of my bowl of pho as soon as it was served at my table, and I immediately tasted the soup before anything else was added to it. The soup was perfectly balanced both spices and seasoning wise and the temperature was just right. Then I added basil, bean sprouts, and a squeeze of lemon juice to my pho, as nothing else was needed to alter or masking the original taste of the slowly simmered broth. There was no need to insult the broth (or the broth chef) by adding hoisin sauce and fake stuff to it. I truly enjoy the style of the beef served. The beef pieces are very tender, not like the rare beef slices that most Vietnamese restaurants offer. Also I cannot say enough good things about the ribs that came with my pho order. Overall it was a very satisfying bowl of pho to me. There are many Vietnamese restaurants out there with their own interpretations of pho broth in terms if the use if spices, seasonings, and bone to water ratios in make the all day all night long slow simmering broth. Also, northern style and southern style pho are quite different from each other by taste and composition. There is nothing wrong with most of these other Vietnamese restaurants and their own interpretations , however I found the pho that I had today at Golden Era very agreeable with what I am looking for in terms of "balance". Some spices might smell great if a lot of it is used, but could create a noticeable unpleasant taste and even an irritation reaction to the throat. This is why I believe Golden Era is a winner with the pho game. I have a photo of a fully finished bowl to proof it. I will definitely return to Golden Era again. Will see if their quality control is consistent enough to build a regular customer base. Other factors to consider: they do have a clean and tidy looking kitchen, but from the front end of the restaurant to the kitchen is about 30 plus steps; the restaurant was operated by a grandma and grandpa only when I was there at 11:30 am, they were very nice and doing the best that they could... please be kind to these folks.

I came around 5:50PM on a Sunday night and had to wait about 10 minutes, but by the time I left around 6:30PM, the line was out the door and then some. Definitely get here early, and parking shouldn't be too hard with a lot nearby and free street parking. This spot is pretty casual, as in you order at the counter before grabbing a number and sitting at a table. As opposed to a food hall, you get directed where you sit before ordering, and sometimes end up sharing a table with another party, especially in my case when you have a party of 2. Service was attentive and food came out at a decent pace, though they did not come all together. I ordered a large Bistec Sandwich and a Pasteles Special. The Bistec sandwich is a must order, and I recommend ordering the sandwich over the plate due to how fragrant the bread was. Pictures might not look like much, but the bread was sooo good and crispy, and they give a good balance of meat, avocado and veggies. It can be a little heavy, but a large sandwich was perfect for my wife and I to share along with another plate. The Pastales was alright - the rice is pretty unique if you're looking for new flavors, but the pork was a little stinky and dry. The hot sauce on the table is really good and managed to mitigate that, and it's not as spicy as you'd think given the color and smell. The banana leaf in the tamale made it really fragrant with a unique taste, and the lemon sauce on the salad balanced the entire plate out. For a party of 2, I recommend ordering the Bistec Sandwich in large size (since I believe the regular price only gives you half) and another plate. I also recommend using the toast tab (online order) to look at the menu over their actual menu; the UI of it makes it hard to choose what to order and the toast menu has pictures next to the menu item. Given that Marin food options can be quite expensive or fancy, this place is the perfect place to go for a unique food spot, especially if you're coming from SF.

Only when it came time to pay was I told they couldn't enter my order because I didn't already have a table. Apparently you're expected to secure a seat before ordering, and there was a wait. I don't understand this policy. One of the advantages of counter-service restaurants is that you order first, then find a table while your food is being prepared. That keeps things moving. Requiring people to occupy a table before they can even place an order seems like it would make everyone's meal take longer and reduce table turnover, which seems counterintuitive and inefficient. The bigger problem is that this wasn't obvious to a first-time customer. I had no reason to think that this restaurant operated differently than virtually every other casual counter-service restaurant I've been to in my life. You only find out after you've already waited in line and are ready to pay. To make matters more confusing, my husband had eaten here before and simply ordered first and found a table afterward, just like he would anywhere else. He had never encountered this policy. If it's only enforced during busy periods, that's exactly when customers should be clearly informed before they spend time waiting in line. I'm sure Hook Fish is popular with regulars who already know how the system works. For a first-time customer, though, the experience was confusing and frustrating. I live nearby, but this was such a poor first impression that I won't be back.

We loved the addition of mint for the wraps, but I personally don't care for perilla leaves. The fish sauce accompanying the wraps was delicious and was also great over the pad thai, which was a bit on the bland side without it. Service was a bit less than perfect. When one diner asked for water, only her glass was refilled when another glass was obviously in need also; minor overlook, though. The one thing that was a bit disturbing was the noise level. It was extremely loud, so it was really difficult to hear each other talk. It didn't help that the party at the next table had a woman who cackled loudly when she laughed. It was a relief to step outside after we ate. Not sure what can be done to help with this, but it did make dining there not as pleasant as it could be.
