Flavorful food. Authentic and fulfilling. Staff is very nice and attentive. Good place to bring the family as there is a little bit of everything for everyone. From burgers, to pastas and steaks to authentic Latin fusion dishes it's a nice addition to Novato.

I'm always looking for a low key diner or restaurant where I can take my son, who is on the spectrum, and feel relaxed, eat well and not rushed, and overall just a great family place. I found one! Star restaurant has a variety (and I mean everything!) from breakfast American / Latin style to a kids menu that has it all, and pupusas. They have milkshakes, healthy salads, hearty comfort food, and booths with big windows to keep kids interested. There's a cozy vibe to it. I don't know why it has 3 stars because if you're looking for great timely service, where you don't feel rushed and can sit and enjoy the meal, a unique place that isn't a chain, come here. Parking is easy. Bathrooms clean. I recommend and will be back.

Coffee cups are HUGE! Not like the puny cups you see at many restaurants.

After a long hiatus, we have visited the *new* Star twice in the past two weeks. We have not been disappointed either time. I have to say I love the kitchy cowboy motif, it's really cute and the wait staff seems to enjoy their costumes as well, but the decor aside, this is a real Guatemalan find. They have retained many of the American menu items from the old place, but what really shines here are the latin dishes which are just fabulous. Last time I had the breakfast burrito, my wife had the heuvos mexicana, and dad had the bacon and avocado omelette "the best omelette I ever had" he said. This time I had the street tacos, my wife had the huevos again, and dad had the same omelette. Everyone was very happy with their lunch. The tortillas? Home made, amazing. Salsas, same. Guac, same! OMG. I can't wait to come back for a third time! Bravo to the new owners, I hope they succeed here.

I ordered delivery on a Thursday morning. I ordered biscuits and gravy, a side of hash browns and a side of fried plantains. I'm so disappointed in the first two items. Hash browns: So oily, tasted like margarine. Not even butter but margarine. Weren't crispy and not seasoned well...other than the overwhelming taste of fake butter. I usually wouldn't take a picture of something halfway through eating it, but the amount of oil in the container was startling. It tasted even worse than it looks Biscuits and gravy: I was surprised the sausage in the gravy was in such large chunks, and from a sausage link it appeared as well! Usually sausage is incorporated into gravy more smoothly, this was a sad and lazy attempt at gravy. Putting it through a blender for 5 seconds or using an immersion blender would have yielded a better result. The biscuits are low quality, have no flavor whatsoever and have absolutely no bite in the sense the biscuit is complete mush. Toasting it even for a minute would have been so so so much better. Plantains: plantains were good and the sauce they gave was the usual par for the course with fried plantains. I added a hint of ketchup and tiny amount of garlic to the sauce to make it just like Sol Food's pink sauce. This was the only item I finished

Service was great, vibes and music were awesome and food was great. Recommend the tacos!

We had just come a memorial for one of our friends at the Presbyterian Church of Novato. We're from Vallejo and don't know Novato at all. Then the Star Restaurant caught our eye with the large bronze statue by its front door. We were intrigued by the "American-Latin" food description. Upon entering, we saw a few people in booths. The lunch crowd hadn't packed the eatery yet, but it's located on a main street at the intersection, so it was only a matter of time before customers would arrive. The interior was decorated with Western decor. I liked the little hole-in-the-wall atmosphere. The tables were covered in neat, white tablecloths and the booth seats were clean and unbroken. Shari was our attentive waitress. If you like homemade tacos and Plantains, this is the restaurant for you! Prices were affordable; if they had a location in Vallejo, we'd probably return. Thank you for the positive experience!

Under new management, my boyfriend & I decided to try it out. We waited an hour to receive our food. The food wasn't well seasoned, very bland. Overall, the restaurant was clean & bathrooms were nice. Unfortunately we will not be coming back.

Nice old style diner. I've been here a couple times and it's a good place to get diner style food and service. The last time I went I get the veggie scramble and it was REALLY good. I'm a sucker for a good veggie scramble. Next time I will ask for a little less cheese but it's still good. I also ordered it with a bloody mary and I might skip that one next time. This place gets very popular with the older Novato crowd so sometimes you might get good timing and service and sometimes you might be waiting a while. Keep in mind that every time I've been there its been 1 server and 1 cook. I might be a little generous with the 4 star appraisal as some other reviewers might be much more critical but if you look at it as a home-town local spot with good food and nice people then I think it's appropriate. If your not in a rush, check it out and support an old fashioned style diner!

I've eaten at Colombian restaurants all over Queens NY, Florida, and throughout Colombia, so I have a lot to compare it to. This was, unfortunately, the most disappointing experience we've had. The service made us feel unwelcome from the moment we walked in. The owners barely acknowledged us, and even though they speak Spanish, they spoke English to my Spanish-speaking husband. No one explained the menu or offered any recommendations, which made the experience feel cold and uninviting. As for the food, the bandeja paisa was very disappointing. There was essentially no carne asada, and the chicharrón was almost entirely fat with very little meat. What surprised me the most was the lack of hospitality. In my experience, Colombian restaurants are usually incredibly warm and welcoming. The staff often greet you warmly, offer recommendations, and make you feel appreciated as a customer. I've honestly never had an experience like this at any Colombian restaurant. The atmosphere here felt cold and impersonal, more like eating in a hospital cafeteria than a family-owned Colombian restaurant. I genuinely wanted this restaurant to be great and was excited to support a local Colombian business, but between the unfriendly service, the lack of hospitality, and the disappointing food, we won't be returning.

The issue now is how far this place is to us but if you're in the area HIGHLY recommend. First off - the service and staff - so friendly and welcoming. And the decor - all welcoming, hip, and beautiful! There was quite a few of us so we had a lot of different dishes and EVERYONE raved about their dishes! Let me start with mine. I got the Aji de Gallina - it's a Peruvian classic dish with shredded chicken in a creamy yellow pepper sauce served with rice. This is my base line for how good a Peruvian restaurant is and I will tell you - they have the absolute BEST ONE I've had EVER. Don't get me wrong - I've had really good ones else where but this dish was PERFECT - tenderness of the shredded chicken and the sauce was AMAZING. I'm drooling just thinking about this dish!! Hubby got the Cau Cau de Mariscos - which is a stew made with a variety of seafood such as scallops, octopus, shrimp, and calamari in a hot skillet that also had a broth made of onions, garlic, amarillo peppers, potatoes, carrots, fish stock, and mint. The seafood was cooked PERFECTLY and the broth was AMAZINGLY fresh and flavorful! Another drool dish. Friends raved over their Arroz Con Mariscos - they've had this same dish at other places and Ayawaska was the absolute best with BIG fresh seafood and the most flavorful rice!! At other places, the seafood is chopped up - this place serves the seafood whole (like the shrimp) or in big pieces!! I wish I ordered one to go to bring home for dinner!! Another favorite was the Salmon Con Creama De Poro - my friend LOVED it - she said the salmon was cooked perfectly with delicious veggies and a potato au gratin on the side. She asked for leek sauce on the side which was perfect for her. Very filling dish! Another friend loved his traditional Lomo Saltado which was made so special because they used Filet Mignon, along with the traditional red onion, tomatoes, cilantro, garlic, soy and lomo sauce. It came with the french fries & rice. And he said the fries were perfectly crisp and were not greasy at all - a perfect complement to the lomo saltado! We also had a friend who got the chicken empanadas. She loved it as the outside was light and crispy and the inside had the Aji de Gallina filling! It also came with a parsley dipping sauce which really accented the empanadas. They loved it so much, they ordered extra to bring home to their daughter!! LOVED LOVED this place - and again - wish they were closer to me - but if I'm in the area this would be my go to place for SURE!! OH and I almost forgot - a few of us got the CHICHA MORADA!!! A MUST - it's non alcoholic and is a traditional, non-fermented Peruvian beverage made with purple corn (maíz morado), pineapple, spices, and lime. SO REFRESHING and SO GOOD. Am going to look for this drink at all the Peruvian restaurants I go to now!!

I came around 5:50PM on a Sunday night and had to wait about 10 minutes, but by the time I left around 6:30PM, the line was out the door and then some. Definitely get here early, and parking shouldn't be too hard with a lot nearby and free street parking. This spot is pretty casual, as in you order at the counter before grabbing a number and sitting at a table. As opposed to a food hall, you get directed where you sit before ordering, and sometimes end up sharing a table with another party, especially in my case when you have a party of 2. Service was attentive and food came out at a decent pace, though they did not come all together. I ordered a large Bistec Sandwich and a Pasteles Special. The Bistec sandwich is a must order, and I recommend ordering the sandwich over the plate due to how fragrant the bread was. Pictures might not look like much, but the bread was sooo good and crispy, and they give a good balance of meat, avocado and veggies. It can be a little heavy, but a large sandwich was perfect for my wife and I to share along with another plate. The Pastales was alright - the rice is pretty unique if you're looking for new flavors, but the pork was a little stinky and dry. The hot sauce on the table is really good and managed to mitigate that, and it's not as spicy as you'd think given the color and smell. The banana leaf in the tamale made it really fragrant with a unique taste, and the lemon sauce on the salad balanced the entire plate out. For a party of 2, I recommend ordering the Bistec Sandwich in large size (since I believe the regular price only gives you half) and another plate. I also recommend using the toast tab (online order) to look at the menu over their actual menu; the UI of it makes it hard to choose what to order and the toast menu has pictures next to the menu item. Given that Marin food options can be quite expensive or fancy, this place is the perfect place to go for a unique food spot, especially if you're coming from SF.

Everyone goes for the view, but the food is amazing too! Like what else can you ask for?…read more Main events, parties, birthdays you name it can happen here. I absolutely enjoyed my experience here and would recommend.

I had no idea Novato had such a beautiful gem…read more Nothing against the city but I live in Benicia. The only time I come to Novato is to go through Novato. Theres hiking trails or places where we go to get to the Ocean. In order to go to them, we have to drive through Novato to get there. But whenever we are out in Marin, we usually just defeat to eating a Sol Food(If you know you know...). Recently we wanted to try something different. Ayawaska is about the experience. A very bold name but from the moment you walk in, to the moment you start eating your food you will quickly understand why they chose that name. All the workers are professional but also very friendly. Their cocktails are all delicious. Theres something about taking a sip and peering out the windows and seeing the view. For a minute it really feels like we are in another world. They really chose such a cool location for a restaurant. For food, I saw the Paella adjacent dish on the menu and I immediately knew what I was ordering. Arroz con Mariscos. We did order some Empanadas. I hate mushrooms but I had a bite of the Empanada Veggie. It's all mushrooms dude...alllll mushrooms...but it was good. My favorite was the Empanada de Lomo. But both Empanadas were delicious. They had a nice flaky crust but had really generous fillings. The flavors were so dang good. But with the Arroz con Mariscos I loved all the fixings it came with and how it was decorated. All kinds of onions and bell peppers everywhere. The rice itself wasn't overcooked or undercooked. And most of all there were giant shrimps along with calamari and clams. Altogether this was a symphony of Seafood and rice. This probably could be shared between two people. Unless you are just really hungry. So long story short, I highly recommend this place. Sometimes you go to fancy places like this and they got the nice decor. Sure. They got a nice view. Cool. But at the end of the day, the meal and the overall experience is what matters right? Ayawaska is the full package. If you live in the area and haven't tried this place yet, you are definitely missing out.
