We will be taking our business elsewhere from here out. As far as the eye exams go, I've never had a problem and have always enjoyed my experience. However, every time I've entered the building, the interactions feel cold and unwelcome and the glasses buying process always feels like an ordeal and turns out to be way more expensive than other shops in the area. Couple that with my wife's recent experience where a blue light tint was applied to her glasses, as has been done by them in the past, but this time came with a visible yellow hue that altered the colors in the room which was unpleasant and unwanted. When she took them back, she said it's not right, and the receptionist laughed from the other side of the room when she asked if they could get a refund for the blue light portion. WORSE, the new lenses they put in her existing glasses were not done correctly and you could see a portion protruding from the bottom of the frame. As she was driving, the entire lens snapped and she's left without glasses after spending a lot of money on a new set of lenses. But because she wanted to use her existing frame, they will not cover it and we are now SOL. Will be searching elsewhere for a new pair knowing how unhelpful they would be if we were to bring them back in. read more

Short Story: Dr. Yang is the best optometrist in the bay area! Long Story: I have been seeing Dr. Yang for over 15 years and have followed him from Foothill Optometric Group to here! Dr. Yang definitely takes the time to understand your needs and goes above and beyond to make sure your eyes are healthy. In addition, he explains every step of the exam in advance, so you don't get nervous and knows what do expect. In addition, he makes extensive notes in your file and reviews them before your appointment. Therefore when you come in he is already up to speed about your condition and can make recommendations easily. Lastly, Dr. Yang is also quite knowledgeable about insurance so you already get an idea of the payment before you go to the front desk to check out. I'd say the front desk is quite knowledgeable and friendly. Though the wait times can be long. In addition, there is staff there to help you try on glasses and to work with you and your insurance on costs. In my experiences I would definitely say the staff are good but they tend to give estimates that have all the bells and whistles which might not be necessary. Then it takes some time for them to give you a revised estimate on what exactly you want to get instead. Verdict: I'll be going back for my annual visit soon! read more

This is my first visit at this family optometry in San Ramon . Our family optometrist Dr. Yang has moved to this practice . The front counter ladies ( 3 ladies ) are cheerful and helpful. They check in the health insurance and show us to sit down and wait . They have many stations for the staff to help you fit in the new frame . Today I visit again but for my frames. I selected my frames today, and Solana, the Optical Lead, was a tremendous help. She was professional, kind, and super helpful throughout the entire process. Solana gave me a tray to carry as I browsed and placed glasses in it, even helping me narrow down my choices. She took the time to give her opinion on how each pair looked on me and encouraged me to take photos to see how they appeared from a different perspective. I felt extremely comfortable working with her, and I'll definitely ask for Solana next time I need help with glasses! read more

My experience with Dr. Yang was excellent. Very off-putting experience looking at glasses after. The doctor indicated that my change in prescription was very slight and wouldn't be noticeable, so unless I really wanted a new pair of glasses, it really wasn't necessary. I didn't find anything I really liked, but the rep was very assertive that my prescription change was material. Felt pushy and self-serving. This obviously a commission-based job. i purchased a muai jim sunglasses from san ramon family optometry. the sales tag on the muai jim sunglasses was $368 less a 20% discount, i said ok great. the optician then went on the thier computer and said the price was now $426 with a 20% discount. what i did not was you can order the muai jim sunglasses from muai jim delivered with shipping (free) and sales tax for $370 with a one year warranty for $56 dollars less. you do not have to buy a one year san ramon family optometry warraty for $50 additional dollars. basically you end up paying $106 more than ordering muai jim and you will receive the sunglasses 4 days later than if you ordered them. read more

It was my very first time going to an eye doctor! My experience here was amazing. The receptionist staff Abi and Natalie were both very kind/helpful over the phone & personable when I came in for my appointment! I also had a nice experience with the technician who ran the initial eye tests, she was very kind and informative about each test which was comforting. I saw Dr. Yang who was absolutely amazing, he is extremely thorough and personable. He noted that it was my first ever eye exam & made sure to answer all of my questions/concerns. I rarely leave reviews, but I feel compelled to warn others about my experience at this optometry office. I came in with a minor eye condition that was mistreated which cause the condition to get significantly worse and almost led to eye surgery due to carelessness of the doctors. What could have been a straightforward process turned into a frustrating and painful ordeal due to the carelessness and lack of attention from the doctor. The mistreatment was confirmed by a specialist who recommended not going back to due to the mistreatment that caused my condition to get worse. To make matters worse, when I informed the owner, she was dismissive and evasive, showing little interest in resolving the issue. There's also an alarming amount of doctor turnover here, which says a lot about how the practice is run. Continuity of care is basically non-existent, and it's clear they prioritize profits over patients. The lack of professionalism, empathy, and transparency is truly disappointing. To make matters worse this optometrist is scamming patients with aggressive sales tactics and extraordinarily high prices preying on unassuming patients. They are ripping customers off with prices significantly higher that can be found online, at Costco, and other optometrists in the area. San Ramon Family optometry has some of the lowest reviews in the area when compared to other optometry office. Please do your homework and compare to other local doctors. There many high quality near by who provide excellent eye care and wont try to gouge you with prices that are just out of synch with the market. I won't be returning, and I strongly recommend others look elsewhere for quality eye care. read more

UPDATE of my review of May 24 titled "Good doctors, horrible services otherwise" After the office mixed-up up my glasses and admitted they did so, one of the clerks working there, appeared to be willing to help so my glasses get ready on time for my trip. Unfortunately, due to the production process, the lenses could not become ready, so she agreed to mail my glasses but I needed to pay her the postage because she said the office did not provide mailing services. She promised to me that she herself would mail the glasses if I paid for the postage. Because I was leaving for the airport, I sent a colleague of mine to bring her the postage money. Instead of taking the money and mailing my glasses as she promised, she handed the glasses to a stranger so she get rid of them, without knowing if he would handle such an expensive item with care and if he would even mail it in a safe way. I am completely devastated by the way this matter was handled by the office. I was given run arounds, given very hard time travelling without seeing well, mixing up gates and taxi offices in the biggest airport in Europe ( because I did not see well with my old glasses) . All that after giving them hundreds of dollars and putting the health of my eyes and safety in their hands. I am very frustrated and cannot believe that this is happening. Lie after lie, disappointment after disappointment. I will give un update when (AND IF) I receive the glasses. Again, besides the doctors, this office is a joke. Complete joke. read more

The stars are for Dr. Yang who is awesome. However as others have commented, the glasses department is horrible. Customer service is poor and definitely a tremendous lack of knowledge. I picked out a pair of frames and the representative also suggested another similar pair. The pair he chose he calculated after insurance to be fully covered. The pair I chose was retail $45 more and same discounts should have applied however I was charged over $100. When asked why the difference he just stated "that's just the way the insurance works." No real explanation given. I paid the amount and waited almost 2 months for a call to let me know when the glasses arrived. No call or notification of any sort so I called and was told they would get back to me that same week. Another week passed and I called again. First I was told they needed to check in different places and would call me back. I finally got a call back for the rep to tell me that he miscalculated or mischarged and that I owe $186 additional. All this time I had not received any email, phone call...nothing and I had to reach out to follow up on the matter. I promptly cancelled the glasses and asked to be refunded what I was charged. Dr. Yang is awesome however I may either have to only see Dr. Yang and go elsewhere for glasses or go to a different Optometry group altogether. Customer service means a lot. Unfortunately it doesn't exist here to compliment the excellent services of Dr. Yang. read more

I've been a customer of theirs for a few years now but I don't think they appreciate the value of repeat customers. I've never had issues with the doctors here but I am really frustrated with the time it's taking them to make me my pair of glasses. I had put in an order over a month ago and I still don't have my glasses with me. I've called at least twice in between and I've got the standard response of "the lab will be sending them over this week ". When I had placed the order I was given the impression that it should take no more than a couple of weeks. Very disappointing service. Their receptionist is also rude and could learn a thing or two about how to politely deal with customers. My daughter had optometry test taken here in Feb and we also got specs made from the same place. To our surprise Optometry charged us co-pay when my VSP benefits clearly say there is no charge for lens. I did contest at that time but due to urgency in getting specs made we did not push back. After looking at claim from VSP it was clear that there was no co-pay necessary. I did call Optometry back but they refused to acknowledge this and refund us back extra co-pay charged. The co-pay was not big amount but we are never going to show up on this optometry again owing to their wrong business ethics. read more

Recently went in for an exam, contact prescription exam, and new glasses. With my VSP insurance coverage, prices were still very high compared to most places. I paid a total of $250 just for the exams and new lens. I kept my current frames since I usually wear contacts. Their designer frames started around $400-500 each!? That means, without my insurance, the cost would've probably surpassed $1000. You're better off going to Costco at that point. Also, the quote they gave me for a year supply of contacts was 60% more than what I ended up buying from online. (P.S. Their response about how they can't verify me in the system is cause I don't have my full last name on Yelp.. lol -.-) read more

I've been a client of SR Family Optometry for 10 years and have always had a very positive experience with the full office (optometrists, opticians, reception, etc.). Everyone is a perfect mix of personable and professional and you walk away with a confidence on the service that you are provided. More recently, I've worked with Dr. Mah who has provided great care ranging from my annual vision appointment to support needed with an allergic reaction I dealt with. I also worked with Jessica Priest to select and purchase frames/lenses. As a client who needs specific frames for comfort, I cannot say enough wonderful things about Jessica. She magically found the frame that met both my fit needs and my personal style (i promise I saw the exact frames she selected and never thought to try them on). I've been coming here for my eye exams and glasses for about 9 years now. I've always received great eye exams and services. Particularly, a great shout out to Sherry, their optometrist who has helped me picked out great frames and got me fitted properly. She always makes great recommendations on the kind of lenses i should get too. Recently, my VSP plan has changed and they restricted me to using their own lab to make my lenses, which ended up not quite right for me. I have been a patient here for years. I have seen about 3 different Dr's at the practice and they were all very friendly and efficient. With current restrictions in place. You need to call or text to tell them that you are outside of the office. They open the front door to get you and take your temperature right away. All machines for testing have been wiped down and ready for you to use. All exam rooms that have been cleaned and sanitized have a sign on the door saying so and is ready for use for Dr and patient. There is a large selection of eyewear if you need to purchase. All staff here are very friendly and upbeat. I definitely would recommend this place for all ages to take care of your visual needs. My experience over the last 30yrs has been amazing. They are upfront with pricing and haven't, "LIED" as Monica put in her review below. Im not sure how an insurance company would know every businesses submission date is to the lab to say what they told her. SR Family Optometry always explains their policy so if the customer decides it's to expensive later, that on the customer. Don't agree to something you can't afford after the fact. I love SR Family Optometry, hence why I have been going for over 30yrs. The doctors and staff may have changed over the years but their professionalism and customer service has not changed. They are always amazing. I recommend them to friends all the time. I can't say enough about Beth. She was patient with me while choosing my frames. My optometrist was great. Dr Mah is professional and does his job well. My optician, Beth, she made a HUGE difference for me. First time working with Beth and she was amazing. From making sure I had frames that fit my nose bridge to the fit on the side of my head, she is thorough and she is thoughtful. Her honesty is much appreciated. Very knowledgeable about the insurance process. You won't have an optician when purchasing cheaper online so keep that in mind. note: know your insurance coverage, what is and what isn't covered. If your insurance covers $150 in frames, you're not getting Gucci's for free. LOL read more

I agree it's my fault for missing appointment but first time incidents are normally not charged.. but here there are no exceptions . Great doctor, but I felt scammed. 1st and last time coming here. The service was personable, but no different then if I gone to Lenscrafters. I've VSP and decided to go there as it was the first option on yelp and find my doctors on VSP. I called them yesterday and they had an open slot today. I asked about pricing and she also had my insurance info. She told me my prescription lens exams would be $15 copay but contact lens exam would be $60 to $150 and I have 15%. I was Okay great. After my doctor's appointment, they pair me with an optician and told me if I get my contact lens and glasses together I can save 30% on the glasses. Since its my first time there, I ask how much would the glasses cost. She said, after the frame, anti-reflective, thinning, blue light and high index, the glasses was $630. This was with the discount. Before discount its $900. Once I get upfront, they explain my total cost for the appointment is $300. It was shocking to hear that big number. This is not my first time at a private practice. I was expecting higher, but not this high. The last time I had contact lens fitting it was $70. They said my eye prescription is high so they charge me for a medical induce diagnose testing. I was like, I've never gotten this charge before. She said most places do this. The only place that doesn't explain other surcharges The treatment is no different than lenscrafters. Beyond Ridiculous. Not coming back. read more

If you cannot make it to the bottom of this review. Be warned: Never go to this place for frames/lenses. The opticians are really really pushy and their customer support is bad. We( me and my wife) had an appointment on 12/31/2021. The testing staff and doctor were awesome. Super smooth and rapid experience. After finishing the test, we met the opticians Sherry and Alison. First of all they don't allow us to see the frames by ourselves and instead put the frames they chose on the counter in front of us. This deprived us of the opportunity to see things for ourselves. If we had been given time we would have realised all the frames they have are overpriced. Then she started adding extra coatings and add-ons to the lenses. When I pointed out that I don't need them, she said I have that coating on my current glass, saying she can see it. But when I asked her if she could tell me if my current glass had some other coating, she said I cannot because they haven't made my current glass. Convenient expertise on her behalf. I had to pretty much put my foot down to remove the extra things she was suggesting. Which just exacerbated my feeling of being pushed. ( I wish I had seen their existing reviews on Yelp before going there. The common theme among all their reviews is this "Doctor is good, Opticians are pushy". Guess that is what you get for shopping on the last day of insurance year ) Then I got pulled into the discussion my wife was having with her optician, Sherry. I looked at the add-ons and frame costs she was given and they were twice as costly and unnecessary. Sherry tried to use bad calculation to sell us a coating combination ( she said the difference between what she had written down and another option was just 9$, so it made sense for us to go with written down option) But when I called her out on the exact number for the second option, the difference turned out to be 26$, leading me to turn down her option and go with the second one. This just was for the first glass for my wife. For the second one, I told her again that we don't need the coating and she got vehement and said then don't get the glass at all. When a person working in a doctors office gets loud and pushy with you and throws random terms at you, you feel pushed. When we got home and the actual feeling sank in, I mailed them on Saturday to ask for a cancellation. Considering they ask for 4 weeks time to deliver the order I thought that was a decent request to make. I received a response saying they will NOT cancel the order. I wish I could give negative stars. I had an appointment, and day of, my partner tested positive for COVID and is very sick. I have a young child at home as well so not ideal just leaving him with a sick parent. I called as soon as I found out that morning to let them know and the front desk told me that since I didn't test that I would still pay a $50 cancellation fee. Both my partner and I have been patients here and they just lost two customers over $50. I hope it's worth it. So much for a "family" optometry... Kinda of sad that we are basically a year into covid precautions and this office has not figured out how to make the picking up process easier. It's kinda of sad when every other business has discovered a way to make things work curbside. I understand certain precautions need to be put in place to see the doctors and choose your frames but a simple pick up/drop off should not require an appointment.
