I was trying to find activities for a team offsite for 22 people. I contacted Sandbox and it was super easy. They really tried to accommodate my group and everything was pretty seamless after that. The day of, we got in right away, they helped us with our games and I was able to pick Deadwood Mansion, which is what I wanted because I love anything zombie! Each game holds up to 6 people and I believe they have 3 rooms. Each game is about 30 minutes and after, you get to watch a mini clip of your game. It was so much fun. read more

The game was paused several times due to issues. Guns didn't work. Mid-way through my zombie game, the Enterprise starship loaded onto my headset. Very shady and unethical business practice. I purchased $300 worth of gift card during the black friday sales. I then called this location asking if I could apply the gift card for my upcoming reservation and the staff told me no. I then asked if I could cancel the reservation and book one with gift card myself, and the staff told me if I do that they will manually cancel my reservation just because it was booked before black friday. I mentioned to the staff that there wasn't anywhere in the promo that mentioned customers cannot use the gift card to pay for their existing reservation, and that it literally says "purchased gift vouchers can be sued anytime and do not expire", which he still didn't budge. It's quite a shame because I've been to this place many times in the past and I had a blast each time. I am very disappointed how they've decided to screw over their customers for such a petty reason. read more

I visited on a Saturday and had a fun experience. We did Deadwood Mansion, and the graphics and effects were amazing. When the zombies were eating me and I could feel the vibrations on my vest, I let out a few screams, lol. It was hot in there especially with all that gear on, but they turn on fans. The worker helping us was Carlos. He was great, explained everything clearly, and was very friendly. He also did his best to troubleshoot the problems that occurred during our session. My rifle stopped working twice in the middle of everything (causing zombies to eat me, haha). So they had to pause the game to get things fixed. But then it happened again and so had to pause the game again... the trigger was busted, so they gave me two pistols instead and said we could start the whole thing over. But we were short on time, so we opted to just finish and forfeit having a video (due to to some technical issue with changing the guns in the middle... something about how it's programmed). We didn't care about the video cuz we were looking forward to other plans this day, but I'm sure it's a cool thing to view the experience afterward. At the end, they lead you back upstairs and sit you down to view a video before you leave, but again they had technical difficulties, so we opted to skip this instead of waiting for them to figure it out. Overall, cool place, great set up, probably a cool video too... but due to all the technical issues and faulty gun and long wait time to fix these issues, I can't give more than 2 stars (based on my recent visit). I'd be willing to give them another chance though, and maybe try a different theme next time. read more

I found out that it was either a zombie grabbed my weapon with its tongue or I got too excited and pressed the power button. I would have given this place 5 stars. Sandbox VR is a super fun VR studio that gives you another activity to during COVID. It allows up to 6 people per group and they are open Thurs-Sun. They take your temperature and abide by all COVID rules. I have never played a video game in my life and had a blast. The staff is extremely friendly and makes sure you feel safe and comfortable the entire time. We played Deadwood Mansion and since it is a high octane game I wouldn't recommend it for little kids or people who get queasy easily. They do have other games that are more family friendly. They give you a video at the end of your group and make it a really personal experience. It's about $45 a person for about 30 mins of actual playing time. Just Wow! Upon arriving to the building, the staff was adamant on making sure that our temperatures were checked and we had our masks on. Right at the start they were making sure we were safe and their employees were also safe. We were taken downstairs to the Arenas to start putting the gear on. The battery pack was light. Makes you feel like a Ghostbuster. The weapons were light too. Think cap guns or super soaker type weight. The attendant made sure our gear, headset, and sensors were all functional and in their proper places. Finally, game time. Deadwood Mansion. Think Resident Evil. I won't give anything away. You do get to choose your team name and the scores at the end are tallied up and shown in an epic preview to the movie that stars... you! Your team names are in the credits and it just feels phenomenal. There are more options than the Mansion. A Pirate simulation and Star Trek: Discovery. With there being a limit to 8 per group, we were split in 2 different groups: + UFL (Unbound Fighting League) + Amber Sky 2088 UFL sounded more fun because it's a fighting game. Here's how they describe it: Unbound Fighting League (UFL) is a player versus player (PVP) fighting experience that combines physical sports and esports. It's a world where you can fight without being limited by the confines of reality. Duel your opponents in breathtaking arenas with full body motion capture--your virtual body is your real body. Control how you look, where you fight, how you fight, and what weapons you'll wield. Transform yourself into a fighter that's unbound by physics, reality, and your own limitations. For pricing I think it was about $40/pp. There was 5 of us who wanted to play UFL, so they automatically place us (in random) a team of 2 and a team of 3. The make this announcement while you gear up. Before you fight each other, you go pick your skin (gear color/style). Then you go through training where they show you different fighting moves. Then they bring everyone into the arena where we all take turns fighting. That part was a lot of fun. They other half of our company who played Amber Sky 2088 said they had fun. They were shooting aliens and score was being kept, which seems fun! At the end everyone gets a video of themselves playing, which was was neat. All in all, I had a great time. The whole experience didn't too long nor too short. The staff was very friendly, professional, and knowledgable. The only downside was that we started late due to technical difficulties, which I didn't mind since this was during work hours. I was super sore the next day, which is great. So my family and I decided we would book a reservation here just to try something new since we've been Bay Area residents for 20+ years now. It's always nice to play tourist in your own neighborhood, and I'm SUPER glad we did. Our reservation was for 10pm, and the entire process was swift and hassle-free. We entered Sandbox VR and checked in, signed some waivers, then walked downstairs where we were shown to our game room/"sand box". We strapped some sensors on our feet and hands, put on headsets and headphones, a haptic vest, and then a backpack & gun. Our experience was called "Amber Sky 2088", and it consisted of us using our guns to shoot aliens. Walking in, I thought maybe this might be too technical for my parents, but they did extremely well and had a blast! We had one or two technical difficulties, but it didn't impede our experience. My mom couldn't reload properly... but that's because we weren't shown the ropes to the full extent of the game. Would I come back? Yes. Is it expensive? A little bit ($48 per session, which lasts around 50 minutes). They send you personalized videos of your group's experience through email so it's an awesome team-building experience. read more

The Experience is 5 starts but the customer service is 2 stars. (Hold on everyone!! The positive part is at the bottom) My husband and I got here 15 minutes early but even though it's supposed to be 15 minutes of prepping you for the game and a half an hour of playtime, they were rushing us, even though we got there early. A guy handed us these things you are supposed to put on your wrist and ankles so the game can know your movements, the guy told us how to put them on but didn't double check that it was done correctly, so when the game came on my robot wrist/hand were backwards, I didn't know the reason why and no one came to assist me. (Mind you, at this point in time I am already in full gear with the goggles and vest and the game was starting) my husband had to tell me that my wrist gear was on backwards. We weren't explained very well what to do in the game, there was a assistant in the game that tells you how to do things but we were still soaking everything in and was confused on what was going on, and the assistant didn't explain a few things that would happen in the game. The guy who was putting the vest on us was rushing us, and not talking to us. My headphones weren't clicking in place, so I couldn't hear my husband asking for help or giving orders a lot of the times. So I will give anyone interested in playing "Amber Sky" some hints. When the bonuses like rockets and such float above your head and you shoot them to collect them, sometimes they go off right away, other times they will connect to your weapon and you use that to shoot at the alien ships or the hoard of aliens. Keep an eye on your legs, sometimes those aliens will jump on them, you need to shake them off. When the alien attaches itself to your chest and starts spewing on you, you CANNOT shoot them off, you need your partner to shoot them off of you. Now that is out of the way, let me tell you the good stuff OMFG!! The game it's self was Awesome!! Everyone needs to try one of these games, it was realistic, just seeing ourselves turned into robots was fun to watch. How realistic the aliens were, and how they just came out of no where and all of a sudden in your face. Reminded me of movies we watched where you are looking one way and when you turn around there is one towering over you and in your face. We got spooked and surprised by how it made us feel. The game made you feel that the space elevator was moving that we actually were getting dizzy, you step to the edge of it and look down, and look up and it just blows your mind the details of everything around you. When we reached space, you could see earth and all the explosions due to the aliens attacking and it was beautiful and shocking, all the while remembering that you are actually just in a room. Even though the customer service wasn't great, we would love to go again and try a different game. Just be warned.... It's a workout and you more likely will sweat. read more

In today's world, people pay for experiences, and this is one experience that is well worth the price. I had the pleasure of stopping by during the soft opening thanks to my friend, and I can't wait to come by again once it opens on the 13th. Sandbox VR is a fantastic virtual reality experience. It was my first time participating in such extensive gameplay like this. Our team went through the Amber Sky game mode, which had beautiful graphics that did a great job transporting us to an outer space, futuristic world. Ill save the details of the gameplay story for you all to experience it yourself with no spoilers but it really was a great VR gaming experience. Can't wait to try out other scenarios. The game also does a great job tracking statistics of the players for some healthy competition with one another. The staff was very kind and did a great job explaining the motion capturing equipment that we wore on our wrists and shoes. Only complaints were related to minor audio issues where the volume was not loud enough for certain aspects of the game, and the PvP demo wasn't functioning for the day so we had to pivot from our original booking of the UFL demo. I went last November when Sandbox VR was just coming out of its soft opening I think. A friend of mine was trying to persuade me to purchase a VR system and figured that going to Sandbox VR would be a good way of exposing me to VR games. You can pick a game and time slot on its website. We showed up in SF one cloudy evening, entered the venue, and signed in for our reserved time slot on one of the many iPads there. Aside from some other folks coming in for their reservations and several employees, it was mostly empty. The space itself is huge, and has this nice dark sleek modern feel to it. It's one of my favorite aspects of Sandbox VR. After a short wait, we were guided to a floor downstairs. Our guide apologized that the escalator stairs were temporarily out of order, but we told him it was OK. He sat us in some interestingly shaped geometric seats and gave us a rundown of safety topics and etc. We also picked a team name, which shows up on the scorecard and in a small speech the employee gives before we start the game later on. Because my friend and I wear glasses, the employee brought over some lenses to try out so we could see properly when wearing the VR headset. *If you wear glasses, you'll need to take them off and pick lenses that are slotted into the headset!* My vision is terrible and the prescriptions provided only go up to 700, so I had to settle for that. Afterwards, we were taken to a "room" where the fun was to take place. We put on the battery packs (not too heavy, but they are hefty and warm up after a bit) and VR headsets. We got into the game, Amber Sky 2088, and it was pretty fun! My head got a little dizzy at times from playing VR, but I didn't feel too terribly sick. Because I was wearing lenses that weren't up to my prescription though, the game was a bit fuzzy for me to enjoy but I did my best. The voice-acting and plot of Amber Sky 2088 was underwhelming, and made me wish I'd pick the horror VR game instead. After the game, we got the equipment taken off thanks to that employee (who was supervising us the whole time we were in the game), and taken back upstairs for a debrief. We got to see our scores, and were promised that we'd have the scorecard emailed to us later. It was an enjoyable experience for me (having fun with my friends shooting things up!), aside from the underwhelming nature of Amber Sky 2088 and my inability to see it crisply. The reason why I docked two stars though is because my friend remarked right after we left Sandbox VR how disappointing the experience was for him. As a big fan of VR tech, he knows a lot more than I do about the hardware we were using. He explained that the VR headset we had on were relatively obsolete, dating from the first or so iterations of VR (5+ years ago I believe he said). The VR headsets we used, for example, have a black rigid outline in our peripheral view. If you strain your eyes to the edges while wearing the headset, you'll notice the "game" cuts off to black as if you were looking through a binocular. Newer headsets remove that outline and allow you to see the game completely. Another example my friend commented on is that the animations were more rigid when viewing your in-game avatar (like bending your elbow, or clutching your weapon) because the sensors are also dated. Based on what my friend said, I think the experience isn't the absolute best VR experience you can get at the price point ($48/person). But it's good if you want to have a small taste of VR. I'd recommend Sandbox VR for people who like to do party events, are new to VR (like me), and don't have too terrible of a vision. If you're a true connoisseur of VR, you'll apparently be better off with your own personal set than coming here. Amber Sky 2088 itself is an OK shooter game, but if you're after a good story you won't find it here. All in all, it's expensive for an allegedly dated VR experience. But the employees are friendly and the space is nice and sleek. Check it out if you've never tried your hand at VR! read more

First experience doing VR with a group, and it was awesome! In Star Trek: Discovery, we picked characters, followed a storyline, and shot (virtual) lasers. (***Wish we had tried Deadwood Mansion first; looks like it has a lot of jump scares. Now that we've experienced group VR, maybe we won't be super reactive to it as we did the first time...?) SO FUN! I am very uncertain about where the VR, AR future is headed but we tried this with our friends and it was an absolute blast. We booked the Amber sky game for a sunday evening. Our group size was 4. We got here about 10 mins early and they checked us in etc. 2 crew members got us strapped up with trackers, vests, backpacks, headphones, etc and showed us how to use the gun, reload , revive your dead friends . Once the game started, I couldn't believe how real it felt. We had a lot of fun fighting aliens and throwing my shield to protect my team. I am not into video games at all but I had an amazing time. I also liked that the videos were complementary and we don't have to pay extra for them. Can't wait to go back and try other games. This would be a great team event, The fact that it is Yerba Buena Gardens with a bunch of nice restaurants makes this a perfect lunch + activity team event. read more

Had a very poor experience planning a 15 person birthday party with Sandbox VR in SF. I worked with Brooke over phone and email to plan the booking and said our party would arrive at 4:45 and she booked us a 4:40 slot. When we arrived we couldn't find any employees to check us in. Eventually we found someone named Pan who refused us service because we were past the grace period. We offered to end the game early but they refused and said we would have a degraded experience. Turning 15 people there to celebrate a birthday away is definitely a worse experience. I followed up with Jenny at the events team, shared my phone location data proving we were on time, but didn't get anywhere and they kept all my money. Went here for the first time on the night of my wedding anniversary in October of last year with my wife after a nice dinner, it isn't often we get out without our young child and we figured we would make the most of the evening while we had time to ourselves. We had tried a similar thing in L.A. a few months before and had an amazing time, so we were excited to hop right into the action. Unfortunately, about 20 seconds into the experience I started having some minor lag issues. It wasn't too bad and we had came a little later in the evening so I was going to just work through it but it very rapidly started getting worse and within a few minutes it was barely playable. The attendant on duty swapped out the batteries on my pack and we started again, which improved it slightly but it continued to lag to the point of not really being fully enjoyable. On top of this, the communications between our headsets was non existent(we couldn't hear each other in the game) so we were just yelling at each other or tapping each other if we needed things. We got out of the experience and I explained the issues I had to who I assume was the manager or MOD, as he apologized and offered to email me a voucher for $100 so that we could come back and have a better time to make up for it. We explained to him that we have a young child that was being watched for the evening as it was a special occasion, and that we weren't even sure when we would be able to get back up to the city without her. He assured us that it was fine, and we could come back "Whenever works for you guys!". Cut to early this January (just under 3 months later) and I'm trying to surprise my brother-in-law for his 40th birthday by taking him up here, as we'd secured childcare again for the night. I went onto the website and tried to book an experience for the three of us(myself, my wife and him) using that voucher and paying for the additional slot. Upon trying to do so, however, I found that the voucher had in fact expired 60 days after issuance. I called, hoping to rectify the situation by explaining to the manager on duty what had happened and what I was trying to do but was told because she was only an assistant manager the best she could do would be to offer a $50 voucher(half of the original value) or have the actual manager call me back the next day. I chose to have the manager call as I wanted the entire amount, as if we'd been told it would expire we would have found a way to use it sooner but we were specifically told whenever. Regardless of this hiccup, I go ahead and book for the three of us to go any way which was an additional $165. We show up, go downstairs and suit up and get ready to have some fun in an experience that's a little bit more fast paced than the last one we done. I wish what had actually happened had been even remotely close to what we had expected. *my wife's entire audio cut in and out the entire time *all of us suffered horrendous lag the entire time, having to pause approximately 6-8 times even after swapping out all batteries and resetting the entire setup *my entire vision went either black or white on multiple occasions through the experience, for several seconds *our in-game audio between us kept cutting in and out periodically so we ended up all playing with one headphone on We got out and I didn't even bother complaining, knowing there wasn't going to be a manager there until tomorrow either way and having been assured that giving me a call the following day was definitely going to happen when they were. Unfortunately this call never came, so I've now wasted a total of $265 on one mediocre and one horrible experience and was never followed up with. Will not be returning. read more

Overall the game play & ambiance are great! As someone who is an avid gamer/twitch streamer I felt the concept is really cool. We had a group of people all excited & ready! However due to the poor quality of assistance, my group will not go back. Everyone around was lovely except "William" he rolled his eyes when my friend asked questions (they were good questions btw example: Is this on correctly?) We all felt like a burden. He seemed nice at first so I even asked "you okay man?" He said "yeah" so I thought that was that. Everyone has bad days. I know it was our first time but he didn't have to make us feel that way at all. After that my Boyfriend said "maybe we should have gone to a different spot" in a bummed voice to me...Before I could answer "William" answered under his breath that "You should have" This kind of ruined the game play. Pretty disappointing. We played Deadwood Mansion which was a zombie survival gametype - which involved defending the lobby of a mansion from a horde coming from all sides. At the beginning of the game you can choose your weapons - someone in my group chose dual pistols but someone else's gun wasn't working correctly so they ended up just giving his second gun to the other player - I'm guessing the staff didn't have any backup equipment on hand. There wasn't much of a tutorial in game or any guidance from the staff either other than helping us put on the gear. In the match, it felt somewhat cramped for a party of six. There isn't a ton of room to move around and gameplay felt stale after just kinda standing in place and shooting for 30 minutes. The gameplay was also pretty glitchy - you wear motion-capture bracelets/anklets to track your character to your actual person, but sometimes the game would confuse different players and meld them together, which was very disorienting. My equipment stopped working once entirely - which prompted the staff to pause the game and make some adjustments. The game also crashed entirely at one point, so we had to wait several minutes while the staff restarted the program. We were able to continue where we left off, though our stats and accounts were deleted and recorded to the previous party. At the end it seemed like there should have been more of a debrief or summary but instead they just told us to walk up a projector screen and watch the video (which was supposed to have our stats/highlights) but since they weren't recorded correctly there wasn't much of a point. Overall the game wasn't much better than you'd find on a home VR setup, and was way buggier. The only novelty is that you can play together with your friends in one room, but I don't think it's worth the price point, especially since it was run so poorly. read more
