I think it's entirely reasonable to be cautious about giving a complete stranger a key to my home along with dates that I won't be home, and complete payment of nearly $200 cash when I haven't received any sort of service. Over the years I've hired her many times and have never once had an issue. She keeps me posted while I'm gone, sending periodic updates and photos of my cat. I can tell how happy and relaxed my cat is when I get home - Tiffany gives her lots of TLC and keeps a close eye on her to let me know if there's anything I should be concerned about. Last month I was out of town for two weeks, and my 17-year-old cat had just started a new diet and medication regimen to treat IBD. Tiffany stepped right in made sure she got the proper meds on certain days, and she even got her to eat more than she had been! In fact, I just took my cat to the vet this morning for one-month checkup and she'd gained a half a pound (a significant amount of weight for her) on Tiffany's watch. The vet was very pleased to see how well she was doing, and it really was all because of Tiffany's care while I was gone. I'm very grateful for that. In addition, I don't have any worries about my home while I'm gone because Tiffany takes care of things like mail, window shades, lights, plants, etc. It's comforting to have someone looking in on the place, as well as taking care of my kitty, of course! We have left our dogs with Kathy in the past with no significant…read moreissues. She does give a lot more treats than we give at home, but for the occasional weekend, we don't mind. However, this last time, we encountered some issues that seriously crossed the line. We are shocked and hurt and I hope to help others avoid similar experiences. Kathy did not just give our dogs a few extra "treats", which is what she had asked about and we had given permission for. She also gave them "premium supplements" at meals, on top of the prescription kibble we had provided. On top of that, she gave all 3 of them far more kibble with each meal than instructed, going through 8 or more meals worth of food in just 6 meals. She did this for all 3 dogs, even though the amounts of each kibble to be given to each dog were very clearly written in marker on large cards in the front of each food baggie, as simply and clearly as possible; the measuring cups were included; and each bag was also labeled with how many meals in total were in it. And then she had the gall to *charge us* for the "supplemental" mealtime foods she added, which we had NOT asked for, agreed to, or wanted! This was a complete shock because although she has, as I said, given more treats in the past than we would at home, she has not ever before, to our knowledge, added foods to their meals, let alone charged us for any foods she gave. There is an order of magnitude of difference between the usual few extra treats and the several extra cups' worth of food given every day to our dogs. My dog has a history of IBD, which Kathy knew and was in his paperwork. Yet he was hugely overfed and given rich, unusual foods, including roast beef, stewed chicken, canned tripe, and goat milk, which could have made him very sick. He also has SLO, which has been in remission for years, and for the first time in years, while at Kathy's, he lost a toenail. We can't be certain the extra food was the only cause of that, but I would lay odds that the stress to his system from all that food was a factor. Such large meals are also a bloat risk, which anyone caring for the larger, deep-chested breeds should know. Unfortunately, we had already written the check before looking in detail at the breakdown of charges and realizing what she had done and charged us for. When I brought it to her attention, she justified the charges by pointing out that her contract says that premium foods and supplements are available and the prices may vary depending on availability. The same contract asks that owners provide the dog's own kibble for meals "for the sake of the tummy". Hello? Any benefit to the dog's tummy from having their own kibble at meals is negated when those meals are "supplemented" with all these extra foods! I am positive that ANY dog owner would -- as my partners and I all did -- take the wording in the contract to mean that premium foods are available IF REQUESTED by the dog's owner or IF the owner chooses not to bring the dog's own kibble. NOT that these foods would be given, and charged for, at Cathy's sole discretion, IN ADDITION TO the dog's own measured meals from home. We would have accepted an apology and an offer to refund the charges we had not agreed to. But we got neither. Kathy insists that giving extra foods with meals, and not just treats at appropriate times to reinforce behaviors, is part of her "behavioral philosophy". Prior consent of the owner, apparently, is NOT any part of her philosophy. This is highly unprofessional, to say the least.

I was hoping to get lucky and locate another wonderful GSD. There are several great local real serious GSD breeders (Von Waldberg for one) but we did not have the budget. So after a very disappointing few days searching through the disappearing, price changing, dubious pedigree, available but suddenly sold, wait for husband to get off work at 4 turning into wife off at 5, vaccinations with no vet records, parents on site but too aggressive to see and other scam dogs...we gave up. FOLKS BE VERY CAREFUL BUYING ANY DOGS ON CRAIGSLIST! Dog craze was at a fever pitch in our the family by now. I started looking for GSD real breeders on line and found several. One that looked good was Majestic Royal German Shepards in Puyallup. When I called the owner was very knowledgeable nice and sincerely listened. From a budget point of view I asked if she might have any " pet quality " pure bred GSDs that did not have to have AKC as we were not going breed or show. She did not at present but said she would ask around her freinds and other breeders (nice touch). Then told me of a freind that had a 7 week old female puppy with "special needs" that she was offering in turn for a good home. Enter Amanda Her little puppy had a condition called mega esophagus which means that the dog has to be seated vertically to be fed soft food and there is always a danger of aspiration pneumonia. After some research they may grow out of it however there is no surgical repair possible and no medication. We pondered and talked about it but felt even as very experienced dog people it would be more than we could handle. Reading between the lines Amanda had been caring for this puppy when most breeders would have put it down. Amanda was a dog lover with a tender heart not just someone in the dog business...cudos. Good sign folks. We declined sadly and were offered a male 10 weeks old and female 7 weeks old that she had that were ready. So Sunday evening my wife son and I headed for Graham...a day and a half drive dropping bread crumbs all the way so we could find our way back to Newcastle (just kidding). We were greeted by a gang of beautiful German Shepards different sizes coats and colors playing in a fenced turn out next to three kids jumping in a trampoline...choices kids another good sign. Amanda approached and escorted us into her compound complete with pigs chickens guinea hens calfs goats a horse and lots of GSDs and puppies all healthy clean thriving and smiling...more good sings. She brought out the male puppy that we had come to see and besides being handsome the little guy was not skiddish (always check) at all or shy and seemed very well adjusted curious clean shiny bright eyes and very cuddly. She then brought out the mother (father owned by Amanda's mother who lives close by) who was beautiful freindly and interacted with her puppy well although not nursing any longer. The puppy played well with mom and the pigs and played "stick" and ball and a little fetch...good sign again! We asked to see the all black female and one of her helpers brought her out and she was in the same condition and behaved in a similar fashion...tough choice. When asked if she had any other ready pups that we should see the helper quickly produced another female same condition in a beautiful sable color...way tough choice now. The three of us held cuddled and played with the three of them for an hour or more. I asked Amanda if she was anxious to find a home for one over the others and she quickly responded that she wanted us to make the right choice and be happy...wow. Now folks this was Sunday evening about dinner time with her two children going back to school after their spring break in the morning and their was no rush by Amanda for us to make our choice...nice customer service. BTW...she found a great home for her little health challenged baby with a local vet tech with children...angels I guess We chose the Black and Tan male with first shots AKC registry chipped with a health quarantee. Her assistant quickly chipped our new pup readied our paperwork efficiently and got us on our way. We excitedly raced home (following the crumbs) holding our new little boy while having a very animated chatter about what we had just experienced. Folks customer service is rare if not missing all together these days but let me tell you that Amanda at Von Tore K9 and her freinds family her GSDs puppies pig pigs and the rest of her menagerie have this down to a science. BTW...had him checked out at our vet with and received a glowing bill of health...not surprised. By 12:18 PM, I still hadn't heard anything, so I messaged to check in. That's when I suddenly got a message from a different number, saying I had missed texts (which never showed up on my end). I even sent screenshots proving this, but the groomer insisted it was my fault and accused me of deleting messages--completely untrue and unnecessary. Despite my clear communication, she charged a $60 late fee and refused to release Olive until I paid it. There was no apology, just blame and attitude. She also gave conflicting reasons about why the delay was a problem--first claiming she missed another grooming appointment, then saying it was a doctor's appointment for her son. The grooming itself was fine, but the customer service was shockingly poor. I won't be going back.
