My poor dog Sammy had an tooth abscess rupture and burst through his lower eye lid. I found out after a visit to my regular vet that it would be $4400 because he had to have all of his teeth pulled...like WHAT!!? I made contact with Dr. Patterson at Yelm Vet, who let me know I could bring him in for an evaluation. After doing so I learned they were able to do it for way less for the same procedure and medication. I was able to gather the $$$ and schedule his surgery VERY quickly! They were exceptional and handle Sammy very careful & saved 3 of his teeth!!! He is not an easy one as he doesn't like anyone but his immediate family. I am so thankful for Dr Patterson, the surgeon, and the team for taking care of this. I felt I was at a loss when my vet gave me the quote they did. if you want a vet that truly cares for your pet, do not come here. we received a cancer diagnosis in an email after repeatedly asking for a phone call as soon as the results came in, which they had noted in our chart but ignored. not only did they send the results via email, they were referring to my boy dog as she/her in the entire message. So this place is the most difficult and uneasy place to deal with. We have a couple of dogs that's went there. One being a old (16yr) dog. The other is 1 1/2 yrs old. Out of 8 time's only 2 were ok the rest was a bad experience. The pet plan is a gimmick. Don't get it. Yes you will spend more then it worth. They tell you that if you have a emergency need they will give you a discount. But three time's I had an emergency and 0 time's was I able to get in. And so I paid over 1000.00 only got neuter and 1 set of shots. Now so to give you a idea of the common expense of a neuter is between 300. And 500. And common expense of 1st set of shots and exam is only about 75. And 150. Then I went in just to get a refill of my older dog but also had a DR appointment for my self that day that wasn't changeable. During that apt vet Dr. Told me she needed to get X-ray for my 16 year old dog. Instead of not saying we can make a appointment for this after my appointment. She told me she can't guarantee my dog will live two more weeks. This is eight months later. Ok telling anyone that there dog is going to die if they don't get an X-ray is absurd, and so insensitive to say. I don't recommend you bring your pet here. It's way worth driving a little extra to get good service for your pet and good experience for you. read more

Every vet I've ever been to allows appointments with vet techs for nail trims, but this vet doesn't. They told me "we're not a groomer" but my dog has fear aggression and special circumstances that he cannot go to a normal groomer. I'm not paying for a full exam every other month when all I need is a trim because my dogs nails grow long fast and are uncomfortable to him and I fear them ripping off causing further pain and expense. What a joke and a money pit. I'll be taking my business for my two dogs elsewhere. read more

Their intake process is terrible. They still don't let you go in with your pet. So you show up at your appointment time, call them to let them know that you are there, and then wait. And we waited for 1.25 hours past our appointment time for someone to come out. And after 5 min, then said, "oh, we don't have our surgical team here for 3 days. So you need to go somewhere else." Have been taking my Tibetan Mastiff girl to Yelm Veterinary Hospital since we brought her home as a puppy in early 2021. Although they do always seem booked out for at least a couple months ahead, they are a facility in a rural community and have a lot of patients. I have always been able to schedule appointments for her annual vaccinations and updates. I have also called on numerous occasions and obtained "walk-in" appointments (where I can show up, and they will see my dog sometime during the day as allowed)- some of these "walk-in" visits have turned to scheduled visits within a few days. The staff are always very polite and seem genuinely concerned and have the best interest of all their patients. I would recommend them many times over! I drive a way to see them- and will not take my girl anywhere else! We are getting a little brother for our girl, who will also have his home vets with Yelm Veterinary Hospital! I adopted a puppy. They were to spay and repair a hernia. When I picked up my puppy they had only performed the spay. When I asked about it, they informed me they were only to do the spay. They scar hit led right to the hernia. So if they only were to do the spay, why didn't they inquire as to doing both at the same time at additional cost. A phone call to ask? saving my 1.5lb puppy to have to be cut open again. It turns out same my puppy also has double canines that need to be pulled as well. I called to inquire why the procedure was not preformed and they just advised would give an estimate for it to be done. Why when they took my puppy back pre surgery they did not advise of needed procedures while already under anesthesia? A month later the rescue, which is great, called and advise the vet would indeed take care of the hernia, but I could not take my own dog in. I had to have someone from the rescue take her in. So needless to say I said no I will take my puppy elsewhere. All I did was ask and then why they would not call me and ask to be able to do both at the same time. read more

My two dogs have been going to Yelm vet hospital for the past 5 years. Called on Sunday and their message says they are open from 10-5 pm on Sunday. Left a message with no call back. Called on Monday at noon since I still had not heard back from them. Our pet is experiencing what appears to be renal failure but they were unable to see her for 2 weeks. I would suggest finding a new vet and not using this one. Covid aside the lack of call back for multiple messages is unprofessional. read more

We switched to this vet when we moved to yelm. I am switching back to our old vet in Tacoma. I usually order my dogs flea medicine online and they used to approve it now the doctor won't approve it because we are at the year mark for since our last check up do to COVID-19. I understand that they keep the lobby closed but they won't extend a prescription and won't let you come in with your pet for the appointment. My dog suffers from separation anxiety and won't leave my side. The person on the phone was super rude. I decided we won't be going anymore and made an appointment in Tacoma where they have the lobby closed but you can still come in with your pet for the appointment as long as you wear a mask. read more

I had to put our cat down yesterday and they were the only place that would take care of her in the Yelm area. In fact, they said they would never turn away an emergency euthanasia. I have been going to this Vet for 40 years,when Dr Don, Jerry and Chuck were great, as time has gone by the staff has gotten more unfriendly the wait time is crazy even when you have an appointment.Today was a 12:30 appointment granted they did put me in a room at 12:30 and I sat there and waited and waited until the Vet tech came in and told me there was an emergency (they only have 1 Doctor ? ) and the wait would be longer. We have been going to Yelm veterinary hospital for 10+ years. This morning our schnauzer woke up unable to stand. When he tried to stand his hind legs would shake. You could feel his heart rate when you held him. We called at 8:10 to explain our concerns and was turned away. The lady on the phone said "unfortunately our walk-in are fully booked and she recommends a emergency vet." We explained our loyalty to them and asked to be worked in. She kept apologizing. I would give them 100 stars if i could. I cannot say enough good about them considering the fact they saved my little furry baby. Dr. French is by far the most caring, wonderful, amazing vet I have ever come across. My Gracie (6 year old "puppy") was very anemic and we couldn't figure out why and Dr. French referred us to an internal specialist. After she was diagnosed and put on meds we had some additional difficulties keeping Gracie healthy due to her condition. Dr. French has been there every step of the way as if we were family and as if Gracie was her own dog. Dr. French hospitalized Gracie for a few days and kept us up to date on our baby. She came in on her days off to watch over Gracie and made sure she was getting cared for properly. The other vet techs were so loving and understanding of how we felt and couldn't be more loving of our Gracie. Dr. French called us everyday and allowed us to come and visit Gracie and walk her while she was in Dr. French's care. She made calls to the specialist for a second opinion of what she though would be best for our pup and kept us informed. They saved our girl. We cannot thank them enough...I only hope someday we could do something as special and meaningful for her and the staff..as they have done for us. Thank you. read more

I switched to this place after my previous dogs passed away for a location near home after having been with my old vet for 14 years which was farther away. New dogs - new vet I thought. First - my Aussie puppy got a bladder infection. At night time took her to OlyPet ER - they prescribed amoxicillin. The next morning she had blood in her urine. Out of concern I called Yelm Vet. Hospital - because they are my vet right? Shared my concern and they said they didn't have time to see her - that I should just take her back to OlyPet ER. There was no concern - no caring. I was floored that they would turn me out like that - my old vet would have NEVER done that. Two days later my 16 month old German Shepherd was neutered by Dr. Griffin. I also asked them to check out a cyst on his right front leg while he was under anesthesia. I asked them - if you call me on my cell and I don't answer - please call me at my work number since I don't have good cell service at work - which is just 6 minutes away from them. 4 hours later I see I had a missed phone call from them on my cell - but no call to my desk phone at work. They wanted to know if I wanted them to remove the cyst while he was under. Well - too late - by the time I saw they called - he was already in recovery. Now - I get an estimate of $600 - nearly $900 to remove a cyst at a later date. NOW - pain management post op - Basically none. Max was sent home with just 3 syringes of meloxicam... no Rimadyl. Well - the next morning when I was to administer the meloxicam - Max was in so much pain he would not let me open his mouth to shove meloxicam down his throat. I called and asked them to prescribe a pill form of Meloxicam that I could use for him instead of the liquid form. That was a BIG NO for some reason. The front desk gal said the doctor was uncomfortable with that level of dose. WHAT? I was only asking for a pill version of the the liquid that had been sent home. This was insane. The only other option they allowed was gabapentin. Which is for nerve pain - not inflammation or generalized pain. What a joke. They would rather leave my dog in pain than prescribe what is necessary to keep him comfortable - I was not asking for the moon here. This was inhuman. My poor dog. Gabapentin did nothing for him. He ended up having swelling down in his man parts - as evident with weak urine stream. And also - as a result of him being in so much pain it has changed him towards me. This is a disaster that could have been avoided had the doctor prescribed simple anti- inflammatory that I could administer safely. When I called them to talk with the doctor about his altered behavior - aggression - towards me I still was unable to speak with an actual doctor - instead I just got the office manager who was dumbfounded and basically had NOTHING to offer in the realm of real advice or guidance. And NO ONE has called to follow up to see how Max is doing. Had I been with my old vet they none of this would ever have happened. Max would have had what he needed to be comfortable post-op and the doctor herself would have been on the phone with me day or night to help with the situation. I'm shocked at the lack of medical care - lack of follow-up and complete lack of understanding for the situation. And the complete lack of care from the doctor herself. Not one person from that office has called to see how Max is doing and it's been over a week. I now have to seek the help of a behavioralist to reclaim my dog's mentation. There was none of this behavior from him towards me pre-operation - prior to the complete lack of pain management. Shame on Yelm Veterinary Hospital !!!!! read more

I made an appointment two weeks ago. Everything was confirmed. I requested half a day off from work to see the vet for my dog. In the morning I drove to Yelm veterinary hospital which took me an hour to get there. I called to check in and they said they will be out shortly. 20 minutes later after waiting in the parking lot they called me back and said they don't have time to see my dog. Asked me to reschedule another day or wait without telling me an estimated time. I wasted my time driving here and back which took me two hours, wasted half of my day off and etc. not to mention my dog didn't get the attention it deserve. They didn't bother to call me earlier to tell me that this will happen. I saw a pick up truck pulled up and was taken care of right away. The owner of the truck left after dropping off the cat. I felt that I was lied too. I hope they don't do this to anyone else. read more

My dog has been quite sick for 2 days, I had called 7 vets to get her in, including emergency hospitals and no one could get me in. So then I called Yelm Vet: Made an appointment for Peppa to be seen at Yelm Vet Hospital yesterday afternoon. Spoke with a lady at the front desk who was able to squeeze her in at 8am this morning after I explained her symptoms. I was thrilled and thanked her for being able to get her in. Fast forward to this morning, my boyfriend gets there and calls to let them know that he is there with Peppa. The lady states that she didn't have Peppa on the schedule and had no appts for 8am this morning. I told him to let her know I would be calling--conversation below: Me: Hi, my dog Peppa is there waiting to be seen. I had talked to someone yesterday who made me an appt for 8am this morning. Before I got off the phone with her I verified it. Her: Okay, well we don't have her on the schedule and we are booked today so no room for a walk in (So I reiterate what is going on with my sick dog and she literally just says the same thing) Me: Listen, this sounds like your guys' mistake, my boyfriend took time out of work to bring her to the appt that was made yesterday. I wouldn't make up a day and time for nothing! She needs to be seen and I was told it was 8am this morning... Her: Okay, I mean I do see her on this schedule as an 8am walk in but we aren't allowed to even schedule walk-ins and we are already so booked, that we cannot accept walk-ins... Me: Oh okay, so what you are telling me is that she IS scheduled, as a walk in, AT 8am, BUT you cannot see a scheduled patient!? Quite confused Her: Yes that is correct Me: So you are telling me that because your clinic messed up that my dog now has to suffer because you wont honor a mistake? I work at a clinic and know when you schedule appts that whoever scheduled it their name shows up, so look at this appt and tell me who in your front office did this and let me talk to her please Her: Well yes actually we are supposed to put our initials next to the appts we make but this one doesn't have one, so yeah Me: So THIS PERSON knew she was doing wrong and couldn't even take responsibility? Her: Um....yeah I mean it sounds like it. With that being said she never ONCE offered an apology, she offered an appt for MIDDLE of August, though my dog is throwing up blood and not eating and drinking, etc. She never tried to honor their mistake and completely pushed me aside. I will never be going back to this vet clinic. Extremely unprofessional and immature staff. read more

I wanted to buy it online but needed the approval. They said I had to go in for an exam even though every single time we have it's the same issue. $55 just for an exam is stupid. If I could give this veterinary hospital a zero, I would. My family has been going to this vet for 40 years and the past few years has been a landslide in disappointment. I have had severe emergencies and they never seem to care. I have once showed up with a puppy that was a bitten with blood dripping all over me and there response was "we are at all full capacity". I have used them for 6+ years now and the last 2 times I need services for my kitty I get rude, uncaring phone conversation from them. I know what my cat needs done as at her last visit the male vet told me to call and schedule her back teeth cleaning and have the sebaceous cyst on her back removed at the same time. So I call today to get an estimate and to schedule her and am told by Taylor that she will have to come in for an appt. to get the estimate and that they are scheduling 1 month out for appts. and 2 months out for surgeries. Also informed me that the man vet whom told me what to schedule for her "No longer works there." What kind of secure feeling am I suppose to feel after she finished her spill with a round about verbal explanation of dental cleanings costing over $300 and can even go over $380 and up. I myself have used their services for a few thousand dollars in the last 5 years and from my entire family over 10K. So now I am on the search for a caring compassionate vet to take over care of my fur babies. read more

When we took our cat in to be spayed, we were asked if she had fleas, as the clinic was a "flea free" facility. Our cat didn't have fleas when she went to the clinic, but she did when she got home, and we're still dealing with treating her a month later! They also charged an excessively marked-up price for a tapeworm treatment (which we could have bought on line for less than $10!). Won't be going there again! read more

Did 3-hr drive round trip from North of Tacoma to drop of an injured Cooper's Hawk - My options were 1) Bainbridge Island, 2) Lynwood or 3) Yelm departing at 3:30pm. This place takes injured wildlife in. The receptionist on the phone was very friendly and concise in communication, process at the desk was quick, the reception area was very clean, lots of parking spots. If we lived there, I'd most likely take my 5 furry kids there. If they were into $$$, I do not think they'd be taking in injured wild animals that do not have bank account or credit card. I took my cat for an exam, I told both the assistant and the doctor my cats issues of lack of mobility, vomiting and clogged nasal passage. This didn't seem to bother them and just checked his teeth and stomach and sent me on my way. Two days later my cat couldn't climb into the catbox that's 2 inches off the ground and urinated on himself. I took him in. In the span of two days he lost 5 lbs. the doctor this time actually examined to find his temp was 96 ( for a cat it's suppose to be around 100-104) this doctor was EXTREMELY nice and did an ultrasound to find he had a tumor that burst (no charge) and explained this very nice and my options. I couldn't stand to see my cat suffer so I chose to put him down. I was furious that the first doctor I saw didn't do jack and my cat was suffering that much longer. If I did ever go back I would ONLY have my pets see dr griffin. She actually does her job and treated me like a human and took the time to make sure all my questions were answered. read more

Took our 9 year old English Bulldog to the Yelm Veterinary Hospital because he was having a lot of trouble walking. Had been trying to get him an appointment since last august, but was told that they were totally backlogged booked up. Was told that if an opening came available, they would call Months later still no call! I called February 7th and finally was given an appointment date of March 8th Took my Mr. Irresistible in on the 8th and two hours later got a call from the vet recommending he be put down. Went with the recommendation and decided to have him cremated. He died on the 8th and two days later my husband called to check on his leash and collar, on the 10th. Was affirmed that everything was together and would be available for pick up when the remains were picked up. Was given a call saying that the remains were ready to be picked up on the following monday, It was taking quite a while for them to bring the items out. Finally they brought out the cremation items, when asked where the leash and collar were. Was told that they were still looking for them. 10 minutes later, she comes out (not wearing a mask mind you) and says the "technician threw them away"! WHAT! You know I went volcano and called her every name I could think of. All she would say is "sorry"... No sincerity in the tone at all. She said "We're done here" as she backed up back into the building where she was in her protected zone. Who throws a collar with "tags on it" way? It was going to be part of his memorial that was being made... As for the leash, yes it had sentimental properties as well, but it was still in extremely good condition and many more walks left in it. It's a crying shame that all she could say was "SORRY". Not once did she ever say "How can we help make this less painful". read more

I took my little baby dog here (ok he's 8, but still a baby). He got himself into trouble after getting into bones which back him up and caused SEVERE dehydration. I thought I might lose him. They took me in as a walk in, and kept him over night. When I came back the next day he was a brand new dog, and was very well taken care of. What actually made me want to write this review is that they just called me to check in to see how he was doing. Although an emergency trip was an obvious expense, it was not as much as I would have paid at my old vet in Olympia. They also do a 5% military discount. The Good... I can always get my pets in to a doctor, they have been helpful with finding ways to cut my costs as needed and understanding of my requests. The bad...I feel they have not been very thorough with visits the last several times I've been in. I Was advised to consider putting my dog down with barely an exam. They didn't know what was wrong with her. The last two times I went, we had a newer doctor that seemed like he had no clue about anything related to my geriatric dogs health. Put her on so much medication it almost killed her (4 new meds at once) after I expressed concerns that she was possibly poisoned with her dog food (which made all 3 of my dogs sick) None of the new meds were to address that at all. I almost did have her put down because she was so messed up from all the meds he gave her, that we thought she was dying. I took her off of them after a few days, and changed her diet to homemade food, against the doctors advice, and she thrived for the next 9 months. We had to eventually put her down and the ladies that came to our home to do it were so sweet. I had not known before that this was an option, to have them come to you. Definitely a much better experience for your pet, if it's his time. read more

Who has a staff meeting at 1 in the afternoon and close their doors for a full hour till 2 this place is supposed to be open during its business hours and yet I drive in 30 minutes away from home to find it closed this is very distressing. I have two dogs on their healthcare plan last weekend I was told I couldn't come in because they were overbooked I didn't call to change my secondary appointment and will talk to you rudely on the phone it appears to me that service is going downhill considerably at the Yelm Hospital for Animals read more

The only reason I took my recently adopted cat here was because the previous owner took him here for a UTI. Total...BS!! They are unprofessional and uncaring. All the other vets I called do "in-houes" urinalysis...nope, not these people. Needless to say, they DON'T CARE if your animal is suffering. It can wait 2, 3 or maybe even 4 days without any relief. We brought our dog here after taking him to Spanaway, VCA. He had been showing inactivity for over 8 months. Thank he could not walk without being in pain. He was diagnosed after first visit with cancer. They were so accurate and caring. Gave us our choices of what we should do. I regret not going to them 8 months ago. Our dog would possibility still be alive. After deciding to put him to sleep, they took care of everything. We appreciate their professional staff. Came in to get tapeworm medicine for our dog. Told them that's what we needed and gave them a stool sample with the tapeworms visible in the poop. They gave us our $16 medicine. Three days later he's still pooping worms we call back and they say the medication they gve us doesn't treat tapeworms just hook and ring worms and we have to pay more to get the medication that treats tapeworms. So pretty much we paid for a medication that we don't need and have to go back to buy more meds. Smart. read more
