10/10/25 - Sanders another restaurant I have driven by 100's of times and finally decided to stop in w/my lunch buddy. Sanders is located on the corner of Touhy & Niles Center road. The parking lot was packed forcing my buddy to park next door in the hotel parking lot. The restaurant has a fairly large selection of breakfast & lunch items. They are open from 7am - 3pm. I noticed that they attract an older crowd so I almost fit in lol . My friend ordered the avocado toast which looked good. Im a skillet kind of person. I ended up ordering the Greek skillet that came w/potatoes, feta cheese, spinach, onions, 2 eggs over easy & bacon (extra add) because bacon seals the deal for me. Bacon, bacon, bacon I love bacon. There are maybe 60% capacity right now, and our food came out in 5 minutes, literally. Super fast. Responsive staff. Food: 3 eggs over easy 3.5 stars (no seasoning) Hash browns 4 stars. Nice texture. French toast. 3.5 stars. Basic, but good. Bacon. 4 stars. Crispy. You get a decent amount Stuffed Avocado plate 4 stars. The tuna salad needs more mayo, it's a little dry. I have lived in this area for quite literally all of my life, have passed Sander's countless times, and have never once stepped foot into it until today. I used to actually be a bit baffled by the business's staying power, because I somehow always seemed to notice it only after its business hours and worried over the desolate parking lot. Well, let me tell you, when it's open, Sander's is anything but desolate. An extremely popular breakfast/lunch spot, Sander's is one of those true American diners that are increasingly rare these days. A meat skillet that ISNT 20 bucks? Amazing. Service was quick and attentive despite how busy it was. I ordered the chocolate chip pancakes and I vastly underestimated how much chocolate chip I was going to get. It's so much, oh god. I was really looking forward to enjoying this place. I had just arrived in Chicago the day before to visit family and wanted to find a good breakfast spot near my grandmother's home. I decided to order something simple: a Lox Sandwich. Unfortunately, what I received wasn't a sandwich--it was a deconstructed plate of ingredients that didn't even lend themselves to becoming one. A burnt bagel, two thin slices of onion and tomato (about 1/4" thick), whole olives, and large, chunky cucumber pieces (about 1/2" thick). How is anyone supposed to make a proper sandwich out of that? If this is your usual way of serving a lox sandwich, I'd suggest rethinking it. I was very disappointed. To add to the frustration, the service was less than welcoming. Our waitress didn't seem particularly friendly. For example, when my brother tried to order something a la carte, she repeatedly questioned him, saying things like, "It's expensive," as if to discourage him. All he needed was to be informed of the extra cost so he could decide--it wasn't necessary to make it such a big deal. In the other hand, my brother did enjoy his meal. It was very crowded Saturday morning. Though staff were very friendly and quick to bring us drinks. Interior was a typical old fashioned breakfast place , nothing fancy. My boyfriend ordered biscuits and gravy which looked good and my kid ordered Mickey Mouse pancake. Canned pineapple and cocktail cherry were used for face and it was ugly cute. Pineapple tasted not so good though. I ordered classic egg Benedict and I'm afraid to say that it was not egg Benedict that I know of. Whatever the sauce they put was not hollandaise and I suspect it must be a chicken flavor gravy or some sort which was not tasted good. Bread was soaked with sauce and mushy. The Canadian bacon was too thick for my preference. I don't know what it is called but there were mushed potatoes that look like pan fried. They made sure my friend and I were satisfied and our coffee cups were always filled during our visit. I decided on meat skillet this time. It was very filling and delicious. My friend's Sander's omelet was humongous and tasty. With a side of hash browns and French toast, she took home more than she ate. I had plenty of leftovers as well. One thing about Sanders... they GONE BE PACKED. Resy or no resy. You might want to put on your most comfortable waiting shoes and bring a chair to sit in. I came here following church on a Sunday for a resy at 1:00 pm and we still were told we had to wait. It was my first time and seeing how it's the best talked about restaurant in the middle of village crossing, I expected nothing short of that. (People don't really have many options). It's a huge establishment but when full, seems quite small. Our server, an older older lady, was clearly the best staff as everyone knew her. She did a quick job taking our orders but was pretty behind with the rest of our service. We attempted to remain patient as it was packed but when inquiring about our food we were met with unpleasantries. I ordered the breakfast tacos with a side of hash brown and I wasn't impressed. For $14.95, I got a large amount of food but the quality and the flavor fell short, very short. The tacos was their version of chorizo style mixed with eggs and cheese. The hash browns weren't crispy and they needed tons of salt. There wasn't a spice on the table that I didn't use to spice up the plate. They attempt to give you a quarter size amount of salsa as if that's going to help the tacos. I needed a full bottle. Been coming to Sander's for years. Years! Today may be the last visit, we'll see. I met friends at Sander's this morning for brunch. 1) The last time I was here I mentioned to the host that people had been smoking in the restroom. And you know it is someone who works there. Either that or the office ventilation connects to the restroom and someone smokes in the office. Either way, is STINKS in the restroom. As if someone forced you to lick a dirty, ash encrusted ashtray. Again, today, months after my last visit, the smell of cigarette smoke permeates the restroom. So you know it's someone who works there. 2) Omelet was dry as sandpaper. One should have the option of having their omlete baked or fried. Baked omelets are dry and tasteless. 2) Three of us ordered hash browns crisp. They were barely cooked. So they were just nasty, barely cooked potatoes. In fact when our server put our plates down she said "I told the kitchen extra well done, burnt, and when I grabbed your plates I looked at the potatoes and asked "do these look burnt to you?" If the server commented on the fact that they were undercooked, why bring them out? Make it right before serving them. 3) I ordered my bacon medium, and it was super crispy, totally brittle and overcooked. I also had sausage which was burnt and tasted old. It was inedible. 4) The pancakes were undercooked, still gooey in the middle. Uncooked batter-gooey. The French toast had almost no egg on it at all, it looked like a dry piece of Texas toast with a bit of yellow on one edge. 5) My friend's steak was so tough he couldn't eat it and ended up sending it back. The three adults all tried it and no one could chew it. We actually spit it in to our napkins. When a steak and eggs are $27.49 the steak had better be edible, and this wasn't. Make the portion of steak smaller and offer a better cut of beef. My friend ended up ordering quesadillas with chicken instead and said they were quite good. But frozen, foodservice guacamole? This is a great brunch place! We ordered skillets and pancakes (we substituted with the special ones), and all of them were delicious. I liked that the booth felt comfortable to sit in and that they have their own free parking lot (although it's quite small and it was completely full when I arrived). Eggs were also not fully cooked and I asked for feta, they just stuffed cold cheese in the eggs. The establishment is well-tended-to and clean. The menu is robust but, not overly done. The food was great. (Leaving the best for last!): Our server was amazing! Her name is Gerry - a consummate professional server; attentive, helpful, and a cheerful disposition. Gerry was great at anticipating our questions and requests. Oh, and, it cannot go without mention: Gerry has a unique and so clever "communication system". My party and I were at Sanders for a long leisurely "catch-up" visit and lunch. The restaurant made money and the Uber eats driver was blessed with a decent tip. So everyone won. Until one day the Restaurant decided it no longer wanted our daily business. They out of the blue cancled our entire order which was simply 2 breakfasts and a donut. The day before they forget to send our donut ( they were out of the peacon roll and ubber eats asked if we wanted a sub so I picked the donut which was a buck cheaper) We never were reimbursed for Peacon Roll and they forgot to send the donut. I did notify Uber Eats and was refunded 5 bucks. Sooo when I place our order the next day I asked them to please not forget the donut. Next thing I know the cancled our order lol.
