Forgot I never posted the review when I went here! Sanderson Hotel is a 5* Hotel...that features an upscale Alice in Wonderland Mad Hatter themed high tea. The menu comes in an antique book, and the sugar cubes come in a jewelry box with a spinning ballerina. The tower of treats featured a "garden" with meringue carrots and marshmallow mushrooms to pick out and eat. There is the usual scones, tea sandwiches, but their desserts were phenomenal - such as the nod to Queen Victoria's favorite sponge cake, and a mango lassi inspired "drink me" potion! Each porcelain olace setting is a theme based on a character - mine was clocks/white rabbit. Tea pots are either King or Queen of Hearts. The settings are made by an artist whose studio is only blocks away. Definitely go here if you can! read more

My family had a last minute stay at this Hotel, when our flight home was cancelled, and the next available flight was two days later. My wife had found nice reviews and (as she stated) "stressed booked" a place in London. The room was clean, and the beds were comfy. If that is all that you care about, read no further. This hotel is puts art forward in their identity. And like art, the quality of this hotel truly depends on your perspective. If your priority for a hotel that feels exclusive and funky, you should appreciate the artwork through the lobby, room and toilet. If you like to keep a low-profile with your date, the dimly lit hallway is a nice touch. If you are looking for a hotel that sells an intimacy kit in the room, look no further. Now, if you are a family of four, including a teenage son and daughter, you may not appreciate the glass-walled bathroom, that looks into the rest of the room. (Curtains can be drawn) If you have a dad-bod with a slightly negative body image, the full size mirror outside the glass-walled shower may not feel like kind, constructive criticism. A very eclectic hotel with interesting decor. They have someone standing out front to help you with your bags upon check in. Despite arriving early to our hotel, our room was ready, which was a pleasant surprise. The rooms are spacious with an open concept bathroom. I wish the bathrooms had doors, but instead covered are glass windows with curtains to provide privacy. The room is also equipped with a converter for those traveling from abroad. The hallways are very dark with the room numbers on the floor being lit up with floor lights. read more

I would say 3.5 stars, but since we are not allowed to give a half star... This is a review on their afternoon tea. At the hostess station, we told them we have a reservation for afternoon tea. It was like a large tent, had an upscale, whimsical feel to it. I liked the greeneries everywhere. They had a book and a box on each table, the book was utilized as a menu holder. White box was full of sugar, with a tiny little ballerina in it. Loved this! Once we were settled, a staff brought over the choices of tea in bottles. Each one named in Alice in Wonderland theme. When the three-tiered afternoon tea treats arrived, we were all excited. They were so cute and whimsical! It came with loads of tasty-looking items. We had: Smoked Salmon Scotch Quails Egg, Stack of King of Hearts Ham and Parmesan croque-monsieur, Cornish Crab Brioche Roll, White Rabbit Cucumber and Cream Cheese Sandwich, Alice's Exotic Fruits Drink Me Potion, Queen of Hearts rose and strawberry Jammy Dodger Mocha chessboard gateau, Tweedle Dee lemon curd financier, Mad March Hare vanilla pocket watch macaroon, Chocolate and raspberry Blue Caterpillar, Wonderland marshmallow magic mushrooms, Mad Hatters lost carrot meringue, Sandersons warm scones When we were getting close to the end, a staff brought a little flower pots for everyone. It was Salted Caramel Ice Cream with Honeycomb on top. It was really tasty! We had a fun, whimsical afternoon tea here for sure. The quality of each food item was, well, more "style over substance" if you know what I mean. They all looked great, but the flavor was not as strong for most. The Sanderson Hotel is modern and seems more like a museum at times. My room was spacious and comfortable, however quite lacking on the color palette, as I felt the futuristic vibes. So I'm picky... I KNOW I'm picky but The Sanderson has met every single expectation and exceeded what was being asked of them. Phil made sure I got to my room safe, understood where all the light switches/shade switches were, and helped me find everything I needed within a block of the hotel. Room-service was impeccable. The food quality, timeliness, and cost were all spot-on. Location of the hotel is beyond perfect. I walked everywhere I needed to in London whether it was work, shopping, or seeing the sights. And the room - ohhhh the beautiful room. I want to pick it up and move it back to the United States with me. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant late on a Tuesday evening after checking in from a late flight. We chose it for convenience - and were pleasantly surprised to find that the food was amazingly good - easily on par with a high caliber stand-alone restaurant. The caprese style appetizer with little balls of burrata along with tomatoes was bursting with flavor. The steak and the pasta and the chicken entrees were excellent. Side dishes were delicious. The venue itself is super girly and pretty. Perfect for catching up with friends. At £48pp excluding service charge for afternoon tea, I thought it was actually extremely over priced for what we had. The savoury selection including two types of sandwiches..some which were actually soggy from the cucumber slices. The crab scones and scotch egg felt like it was lacking flavour. Onto the sweets...the passion fruit 'drink me' drinks were yummy, but it was difficult to suck it all out as it was pretty thick and it was very small. The chocolate oreo biscuits was light and crunchy, scones were tasty and very filling and the chocolate caterpillar was rich and maybe a tad too sweet. Mushrooms and carrots didn't really taste of much. Strawberry ladybug and cupcakes were okay. Go for the pretty venue, cute cutlery and photo opportunities. While, naturally, I can't exactly afford to give the Sanderson my first born or perhaps my right arm in exchange for a room - I can definitely afford to sit in their lovely terrace and enjoy a cup of fresh mint tea. If you can survive sitting in the presence of Botoxed fashion journalists who order Afternoon Tea but don't eat the cakes, and men who refer to those they're having lunch with as "Mr Big Executive Producer Man", this place is well worth it. (Or there's a very nice bathroom you can run vomit into, if the wanky businessman talk gets to be too much.) In the terrace, aside from media types, you're surrounded by flowing, white drapes, Starck's Ghost Chairs, framed portraits of dogs, sunshine, and a fountain surrounded by gorgeous plants and flowers. In other words, you're surrounded by a lot of WIN. The interior of the hotel is magnificent, and while their staff is a little stuffy, the door men look like extras from Chicago (sadly they do not dance or sing) and the swanky, funky, posh atmosphere will definitely put a smile on your face. (Even if you're just laughing at their clientèle.) I say this is the perfect place to have a cup of tea with a client, lover, or perhaps even a Client Who is Also Your Lover. read more

From the outside of this"Urban Spa" hotel you would never guess what lies inside. On their website, the Sanderson describes themselve as "a hotel with modern sex appeal" and that is exactly what they are. The interior of this 50's landmark hotel was entirely redesigned by the renowned Phillip Starck into a fancy surrealist dreamlike interior. I'm talking swan-rimmed armchairs, the famous red-lipped sofa, colourful chaise longue, floating transparent armchairs and theatrical curtains. So far, I have only ever seen the lobby and the famous and intriguing Long Bar. The bar is equipped with a never-ending counter and stools with eyes peeping out at you. I also had a peep at the courtyard and the star-studded space-like lift. The bar is expensive but a good place to come for a special celebratory drink. The Sanderson is one of the top locations to visit in every London design book. If like me, you cannot yet afford a sleepover at this sumptuous hotel, you can always pop in and have look because it's worth it. read more

First up, see the photos... I was at the Sanderson on a hot summer saturday for the Alice In Wonderland inspired 'Mad Hatter's Afternoon Tea' and I was damn impressed. The tea set runs til March 2011 and is playing along with the whole 2010 Alice thing. It's over 20 quid but in London that's no big deal. As a connoisseur and serial reviewer of afternoon tea (check my website), just the mere mention of something other than the usual cucumber sandwiches and scones will get me interested so how about...? * hold and cold pineapple lolly * banana, peanut and salt smoothie in an edible chocolate cup * exploding ice cream ball on a stick * passion fruit and popping candy toffee fob-watch tart * Eat Me cake ... that's culinary imagination! It was entertaining, and in many places the tastes came together just perfectly, especially for the smoothie. There was still a good set of coloured finger sandwiches, fresh and soft with no stale edges, which is one-up on so many other hotel teas. The scones weren't first class but the clotted cream was. The jasmine flower teas come in big glasses for full view (but hot hands) and are worth a try, although it was a hassle getting the staff to top-up the water. I was sad to get my Earl Grey tea in a thick Chinese tea pot when everything else was so Olde English, but he three-level tea set trays were particularly beautiful - all assembled from assorted vintage cup and saucer sets. More of this please. So even if you don't like tea, even if you don't like Alice, even if you don't like lounging around in a luxury design hotel and spotting Kevin Spacey by the pond then still come try this afternoon tea just for the fun of the creative food. I went to the Sanderson hotel with my mum for an afternoon tea. They offer a 'mad hatters tea party' Alice in wonderland style! I was so impressed! We were seated in an outdoor canopy area, lots of green plants and a water fountain. Being a Tuesday afternoon I figured it would be very quiet, I was totally wrong, the atmosphere was buzzing! Full of hen parties, birthdays and other mother/daughter treats! You have a choice of normal at £38pp, or champagne, which I think was £10 more. We went for the normal We were given a choice of fantastic teas (they also had your normal English/earl grey). I had rhubarb and custard tea. The sugar box was a musical box with a dancing ballerina! We started with cute little sandwiches, smoked salmon on lime bread, cucumber & toast cheese on parmesan bread (this one was a little on the soggy side) etc. etc. Followed by mini carrot macaroons, then a whole array of playful treats - chocolate cups filled with mousse, victoria sponge, even a little 'drink me' potion bottle which I'm not sure what was in it, but it was delicious all the same! Finally we had sweet and savoury scones. The savoury scones were my favourite out of the whole tea! They were parmasan and herb and came with a herby butter, I could eat 20 of them! Sadly, we were so full up we couldn't finish everything so our waiter happily boxed everything up for us and I took it home to treat my housemate! My only qualm was that we decided we would like Champagne after all, but it never turned up! After eating so much food, I wouldn't have been able to drink any so we decided not to ask for it. We were charged for it anyway so I spoke to the manager, she was so lovely about it, took it off the bill and gave us 10% off so we left very very full and happy! Would definitely return! read more

The Sanderson is a strange place. It's a 70's hotel that has tried to drag itself into the 21st century...and failed, miserably. There's really beautiful, contemporary design flourishes here and some really nasty tacky ones. And then you have the parts of the original architecture they can't hide but they've failed to make it a part of the design so it sticks out really incongruently. Like a massive.peddble-dashed concrete pillar in what is attempting to be a chic, conptmporary restaurant area. Or the 70s functional stairway that they've "modernised" by painting it lime green - huge fail, it just leaves you with a sinister feeling, like you're in a scene from The Shining. Or the utilitarian toilets they've tried to bling up with some glitzy furniture and mirrors. I'm not actually saying don't go. This place is worth maybe popping into for a drink just for the oddity of decor. One area to check out is the pool room just off the lobby. It's quite surreal, but then the whole place is! But, this area is quite stunning and probably has the most consistency in it's decor - it has to be seen! Okay, so I didn't actually stay at the hotel. I came here for the Mad Hatter's Afternoon Tea. Now, this was quite a novelty! Beautiful, mad hatter themed plates, cups and saucers, etc... Pretty, colourful and imaginative presentation of the food. But then the actual food...mmm, well, that was quite pleasant, sometimes bland but nothing really stand out. So, I've been. I've had the Mad Hatter experience, I have the photos to prove it (seriously, the presentation is novel, it was hard to resist not photographing it!). But was it worth money? No, I'm afraid not. Oh! And a heads up if you do go: It seems it's mostly women that this appeals to, perfectly coiffed, perfectly made-up women. I felt vey much like I was lost in the land of Stepford Wives! read more

I did not stay at the Sanderson.. I only went for the Alice in Wonderland afternoon tea and also had a few drinks at the Long Bar. Long Bar: SUPER long bar with an extensive menu. Our group of 4 all ordered different drinks.. all were delicious and strong. They were also expensive but still worth it for just one drink. Alice in Wonderland afternoon tea: Our host had us wait 10 minutes so we didn't have to sit indoors next to some construction they were working on which was nice. We sat outside and our server was enthusiastic and warm. I won't bore everyone with the details about the menu as there are plenty in the other reviews. I will say that our group had a GREAT time with the cutely named teas (I got the Cheshire Cat!), the delicious savory treats, and the star of the show: the dessert carousel with such creative designed cakes (everyone's favorite was the red velvet ladybug). The ice cream dessert at the end in the shape of a potted plant was perfect. One member of our group is also vegetarian, and the staff was easily able to provide a vegetarian version of everything. A few cons (that are more or less outweighed by pros): I was expecting some Alice in Wonderland ambiance, especially with the garden space in the middle.. missed opportunity I suppose. The focus is more on the desserts so by the end, I felt like I was about to become diabetic from the sweets. Still, I would greatly recommend this as a novelty experience. This review is just for the afternoon tea we had at the Sanderson. I booked Sanderson's Mad Hatter's Afternoon Tea as I was impressed by the level of details in their presentation. From the handwritten "drink me" tags, the crowns (similar to the ones you see in those Christmas Crackers) donned by the King/Queen faces on the kettles, menus hidden inside old books and the music box that doubles as sugar cube holder - I loved it all. Service was great and our server took the time to explain everything to us and made us feel welcomed. We had the strawberries and cream tea and the apple pie tea. Personally, the strawberries and cream was a bit too overwhelming in flavor for me and preferred the apple pie between the two. The sandwiches were so-so but the sweets were good. One thing I'd mention though is I wish they'd add more savories to balance the sweets as I felt the spread as a whole was more of a dessert and no doubt my blood sugar level had spiked that afternoon. We had the following. Sweets: cheesecake, chocolate scone, mousse served in an edible chocolate cup, marshmallow mushrooms, flaky cakes made to look like a clock and a merengue in the shape of a carrot. Oh and the passionfruit drink in the "drink me" bottle which I found extremely sweet. Savories: cheddar (?) scone, mini sandwiches and a quiche. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the experience but I just could not get myself to finish all the dessert. We probably left 1/3 untouched. However if you're feeling particularly hungry or if you feel like indulging in sweets, they are generous in that they will refill anything you'd like and you will not incur an additional charge. Overall a lovely time was had. It's a bit of a splurge for what you're really getting (particularly with the current terrible exchange rates) but I thought it was worth a visit without a doubt. read more

Sanderson's Mad Hatter's Tea is quite the "Alice in Wonderland" experience. Menus are presented to you inside books, you eat and drink from matching china with quirky decor such as clocks, clowns, keys and locks, and you take your sugar cubes from inside a dainty jewelry box, spinning ballerina and all. The tiered treats and finger sandwiches come out of the kitchen collectively looking like a work of art, almost much too beautiful to destroy by eating. Sweets include: a selection of jellies ("Jelly Wonderland"): cherry, strawberry, and peach confections molded and displayed on a mirrored trolley, hot pink strawberries and cream marshmallow mushrooms, carrot-piped meringue intricately placed amongst a bed of pea shoots growing in a teacup, Victoria sponge cakes fashioned into tiny clocks, mango cheesecake topped with swirls of cream and piped into a white chocolate teardrop shell, matcha green tea custard and crispies in a chocolate espresso cup and topped with white chocolate mousse and garnished an edible queen of hearts card (adorable!), and a passionfruit "potion" in a brown glass medicine bottle with a "drink me" label. Don't forget the classic selection of fruit and chocolate scones served with jelly and clotted cream. Savories: finger sandwiches triple-layered with a tasty assortment of breads - Scottish smoked salmon and cream cheese on lime bread, ham and mustard on sun-dried tomato bread, cucumber and goats cheese on parmesan bread, egg and watercress on curry bread. Also present: quiches and savory cheesy pepper scones served with a side of herb butter. This afternoon high tea is a good option for the boys since the scones and triple-layered tea sandwiches are unlimited, if the few provided on the tiered plates just don't suffice for moderate appetites. The venue also allows you to sample an unlimited amount of teas, so you don't have to feel trapped in your initial choice--be it classic breakfast or Earl Grey, or something more adventurous like infusions and fruit flavored. Champagne accompaniments and unique cocktails are also an option (oriental daiquiri, pear and elderflower bellini). Know what you're getting into before committing: a pricey (£45) "high tea" in an upscale hotel, and reservations in advance are highly recommended. The venue is also outdoors in a patio-like space so weather can make it chilly and windy even with the overhead heat lamps, and your dishes and silverware may be sprinkled with black dust from the overhead coverings. Probably only a good multi-hour long commitment if you can tolerate an overload of sugar and sweets. The abundance can be overwhelming if you don't have much of a sweet tooth. The staff are very warm, attentive, and quick to act on any request. Feel free to dress up a bit, otherwise you may feel a tad weird dressed down. Recommended for anyone looking to escape for a few hours into a unique fine dining experience. (Would have been a perfect 5-stars, but I couldn't get over the black soot dusting down on our table, dishes, cups, and food throughout the experience--it comes with the outdoor terrain). read more

Perfect 24 hours I knew the Long Bar -- and I'm surprised that after so many years it's still really popular -- but never stayed in the hotel. The room was lovely and big, amenities are great, personnel vet friendly and accommodating. We were sat in the courtyard by the fountain, on a beautiful summer day. The details of the tea party were super cute! Very IG worthy if you're into that. The food: Delish! We had a party of 6, with two trays of food, & everyone was stuffed. I guess you don't really realize how much you're eating when cute delectable finger foods are placed in front of you. This hotel lobby and bar area are super funky...worth a 10 minute stop just to see the weird collection of chairs and the long modern bar. My friend and I had the Mad Hatter's Tea one chilly afternoon. We opted to be in the garden even though it was overcast, as the heat lamps were on. Tea was very relaxing, and took about an hour and a half (they actually give you a two hour limit...something that seems common in London for dining out). The formal tea (about $60) begins with a cocktail or a glass of champagne. Then some sandwiches and a tall dessert tray are brought out along with your specialized tea. The Flowering Teas are super cool...a flower does actually bloom right in your tea glass (you don't get a pot or a cup with this one), however, as you drink the tea, the flower remains in your glass...it's odd, but worth a try once. Very modern, trendy hotel in the Soho area. Staff is very friendly and solicitous. The decor is eye catching and colorful. The Long bar is a fun place to sit and have a drink or two and people watch. The room had a giant bathtub which was long enough for my tall husband to fit comfortably. The shower was nice but, as with the sink, it was difficult to turn on the water if you have soapy hands because the knobs are just round and smooth. The huge king size sleigh bed was soooo comfy! The food is incredibly delicious and very filling, and complimented the tea perfectly. They took the theme to heart and everything from the tea pots to the interior design just really reflects the Alice in Wonderland feel. I just stayed in the Sanderson for 3 nights. Loved the room, really enjoyed the afternoon tea and the food was lovely. There are only two things I would consider if I was going to London again as a female solo travelled. 1. The hotel is a 5-7 mins walk from oxford circus. During the day it is no an issue but at night in the dark, I felt a little insecure walking from there on my own. Quite a few homeless on the street. 2. I felt the hotel was a little 'hip' for me. I am only 41 and honestly you could nearly feel the 'judgement' lol. I am not one to usually care but I felt some of the staff particularly the female receptionist when I checked in was a little arrogant. Saying all that the gentleman who got my taxi was a pure dote. A+ for him. Lastly I had afternoon tea and I really loved it. Especially my waiter. He was spot on. Sweet, helpful and kind. A+ for him too lol! read more

Fantastical! (This was my first trip to UK, a shopping trip with a friend.) Hotel didn't look like much from the outside, but I could see from the S Class Mercs parked in front, and stylish people lounging outside, that this was the place. The bell boys were nice and flirty, opened the doors and guided us inside. And then our jaws just dropped. I was trying to be cool, but all I wanted was to giggle in glee! You have to see that lounge yourself to understand! Matt at the front desk was helpful and lovely (and made certain that we remembered his name, we did Matt, we did). Our luggage was taken swiftly, and we were guided to our room. But the lifts... whoah! No spoilers, but that was trippy, never seen anything like it before. A space trip, a timey-wimey space trip. I kid you not. Our room was the most standard room they got, and still it was very roomy. Bed was big and comfortable. Toilet area could have had a bit more privacy, it only had opaque glass walls and curtains, but since I was travelling with a friend, we didn't let it bother us much. For a short shopping trip, the location was ideal, Oxford Street right around the corner. To Harrods we asked for a cab, and it was immediately waiting for us outside. We went for drinks at the Purple Bar, and were very warmly welcomed. The interior is worth mentioning, it is very purple indeed, but still cosy, luxuriously cosy. Our bartender (Karl?) took good care of us and chatted with us for a while, since it was not busy. I can't drink alcohol, but he made my moctails with care and enthusiasm, and they tasted lovely. My friends cocktails were also very innovative. We dined at Suka before turning in, and it was all right, just what to be expected. Staff was really nice. But we were so tired at that point, that to be honest, I can't remember much! Next morning we returned to Suka for breakfast, and that I can indeed remember. Again the staff warmly welcomed us, and after seating, we were presented with all the options we had to eat. We had the full English Breakfast, but to be honest, Continental would have had sufficed! One of the best hotel breakfasts I have had. In the evening we tried the Long Bar, had one drinks, but it was really noisy and crowded, and we kind of felt that we weren't rich and pretty enough for that place, so we returned to Purple Bar, and were treated as nicely as the previous night, even though it was much busier this time. We checked out early the next morning, and it went really smoothly. We were offered water bottles for the journey, which we gladly excepted. They seemed to have trouble ordering the taxi, so they asked whether we would like to take "the company car", and since we were only going to the Victoria Station, we though why not! Those S Class Mercs I mentioned earlier, well, they turned out to be the company cars! So yeah, our visit had a very fancy ending too! So in a nutshell: amazing decor, great staff, comfortable rooms, convenient location, well worth the money! read more

Alice in Wonderland is my favorite afternoon tea theme. They did a wonderful job with every little detail. The sandwiches were delicious and the desserts were almost too cute to eat. They even give you a blanket to cozy up with on a chilly day. The service was excellent. My tea cup and champagne glass was never empty. read more

I went to the mad haters afternoon tea here. It was a special occasion as it was my friends birthday. We sat in the outdoor area even though there was a roof which was good. The details of the plates and cups/ saucers were very well thought out each persons set matched. The food was amazing! From the little mushroom shaped marshmallows to the drinks me juice( delicious) the sandwiches were great and kept on coming (on request) so don't forget to keep ordering (its unlimited) the breads were all different flavours something i had not come across before in an afternoon tea! Wide choices of teas ( i had the apple one and my friend had the chocolate one) .. So good! We also had a glass of bubbly! Highly recommend this tea! A little pricey but u wont regret it! Welcome to The Mad Hatter's Christmas Tea Party hosted by the Sanderson Hotel - discreetly hidden amongst the streets of Fitzrovia. You will have option to take the tea either within the garden area or within the restaurant - both attractive options - on a cold winters day we chose the warmer one. You will have strict instructions on how to consume your tea - Listen Very Carefully Your Waitress Vill Only Zay Diz Vunce. You will be presented with a pretty display of tea on tiered stands and cute chintzy crockery. You must do the following in this order and this order alone: 1. Consume your brightly coloured sandwiches NOW - Sarnies are in a rainbow of colours from green to pink (but DO NOT eat the most exciting one of all - the YELLOW - it's ham and you will be a BAD Jew and be chased down the street by Rabbis with pointy sticks for eternity ... actually I think that last bit applies just to me) 2. Take the little brown bottle labelled DRINK ME, and follow the instruction. Suck it and see. You'll taste a three course meal in a bottle - all agreed to be 'interesting' rather than nice. 3. Dessert is a chocolate lolly that will explode/disintegrate in your mouth 4. You can now freestyle with the rest of the tiers that include two lovely scones, cream and jam and a lolly that gave a hot or cold sensation depending which side you pressed against your tongue. There were also mince pies with popping candy and a pink chocolate heart with white foam inside - both were just too rich for my taste buds. Afterwards I was hankering for something savoury and wished I had rebelled against the waitresses strict instructions and left some of the sandwiches to the end. 5. Drink bubbly, and if appropriate toast the beautiful Bride To Be (this was a hen party after all). I enjoyed the occasion of the tea very much - I do like food being an adventure and so particularly admired some of the Heston Blumenthal inspired playfulness to the tea, perhaps enjoying that more than the actual taste of the food. The staff were attentive when they came by but I found sitting to the side of the restaurant, it was hard work to flag their attention once our tea had run cold. Overall for £20 (£29.50 with the fizz) it was a lovely way to unwind, catch up and gossip in a laid back but chic environment. read more
