Eight years ago Sandman tore out existing base and supposedly hauled in 6 loads of grade 9 gravel for a 6"-8" depth base. Blacktop was supposed to be 4 inches thick to accommodate heavy trucks on occasion. The driveway appears to be more like 2.5- 3 inches thick. I had immediate concerns as the driveway did not appear level and had low spots. I was told it was fine! From that day forward I had and still do experience water pooling in a few areas. Each year it gets worse. After about 4-5 years, it was cracking around the edges, center and at the end of the driveway. The driveway also was not sloped properly to drain. Horrible. read more

Last summer we had Sandman Paving tear out our existing driveway and install a new one. After 2 no shows, they came to do a full replacement. They were paid 100% half way through day 2, right before completion of work. The owner Jerry came into my house to collect the check for the final payment before he left. The job was not yet completed. Before the workers left for the day I showed them that there were two low spots on the end of our driveway that were collecting water. I suspected the worker didn't speak English and had a hard time understanding. I emailed contacted Sandman about the issue and Eva told me that they would be back before the end of the season to try and heat and roll our the low spots. There were numerous calls and emails from my husband and I, I never heard back from the company. Innthe winter, after submitting a complaint to BBB, I finally got a response from Eva. She said they were closed for the season. They would be back beginning of the season. Since the beginning of the season there had been many calls and emails trying to get confirmation on when they would come out so we could resolve the issue and sealcoat our driveway. Finall after a no show, in June, they came and tried to heat and roll the driveway. It did not resolve the issues. It left burn marks in my new driveway. The workers said Eva would call. I never heard back. After many more emails Eva told me they could seal coat our driveway as compensation. I told her we did not find this fair because the problem is still not resolved and we paid close to $4,000 and a seal coat is $200 or less. I saw the crew and the owner Jerry working in my neighborhood. I pulled over to talk to Jerry about how i have not hear back from Eva. He got in my face accusing me of harassment. Accusing us of not sealing it, we cannot until the issue is resolved. He had us confused with another customer as well. He lit a cigarette while he yelled and blew smoke in my face, 7 months pregnant at the time with my 4 year old in the car. He said he would come cut out the lower portion of our driveway and repour it. I have still have not heard back. Do not use this company. They have terrible customer service, time management and ownership. Jerry only cares about collecting a check, not his employees or quality of work. read more

I got to tell you these guys are fantastic. First time doing business with them and I will certainly be doing more. My normal paving contractor could not help me out on this emergency job today. By chance my neighbor used Sandman's paving this last spring. He told me they were quite pleased with the work they performed. When my normal paver could not help me out I looked Sandman's paving up and gave them a call today. Introduce myself to Eva The Office manager to see if they could help me out. She said she'll get back to me shortly as she did and said that we will get a crew there within two hours. I understand they can probably not do this for all customers at all times but they realized that this was a important patch due to the heavy traffic on this road which is not owned by the city. Within hours I had a crew of 15 guys on the job site after hours to do an emergency repair to a street right of way that had to be dug up due to a bridge in the sewer. Drive is 5 years old. In the spring I noticed quite a few cracks. I knew it was out of warranty, but called for Sandman for help fixing them professionally and I would pay. This started in March of 2022. They acknowledged my request, but took many follow-up calls to get action. Always " we will get back to you" but didn't. They were doing hot tar crack repair at our church, so I spoke with the fellow doing it. Explained what I needed and he thought he could do it, but had to check. Well not surprisingly, the office nixed that. Now here in August, the final answer is, "you know any seal coat company can do this for you". Perfect! Replaced 26 year old asphalt 2 car driveway with concrete. Very happy with the labor, service and finished product...EXCEPT ITS CROOKED! 10k and the driveway is crooked, the centerline of the driveway is NOT in line with the centerline of the garage. They told me my house wasn't square on the lot but the driveway was fine. They said it happens all the time. Stay away from this company. They do not do a good job, do not stand by their warranty or their service/product. Once you have issues, you are asked to call them to get it resolved, but they will not call you back, will not come by to talk to you, no communication whatsoever. They are irresponsible and do not care about their customers. Once they get paid, that is it, you are on your own. Based on a good friend's recommendation (relative of Jerry, no less) we had Sandman Paving come and do a remove/replace on our driveway on April of 2012. We also had the concrete walkway up to the house replaced, and even added concrete ribbons to the driveway. Jerry, the owner, was even part of the crew that did the job. I had hoped his presence on the job was a good sign: 1.) Based on the referral; and 2.) If the boss is on the job, you expect quality work; but unfortunately it didn't turn out that way. Some issues I noticed as they started: As he drove the pneumatic roller, I started noticing that they were leaving some grooves on the asphalt. When completed, they told me these "lines" were normal and would go away in time. I can tell you, they did not. Next Spring, we noticed there was a long .25" crack that started at the middle of the driveway, across the width and length of it. We also noticed the concrete ribbons had cracks across the width on 4 spots. We promptly called their offices once they were open for the season. "No, this is not normal, we will stop by and take a look". This game of tag continued for weeks, months and now years. I call, speak to one of the admins in the office, she takes the message, tells me, "someone will be out there soon" or "Jerry will call you back later today." NO calls, NO follow ups, NOTHING. This has been going on for five years, and each year the driveway cracks get longer and wider. We have a 3 car wide driveway (2.5 car length), and the cracks now extend side to side and top to bottom, .50" inch wide at spots. This is unacceptable. We tried to resolve this in a friendly manner, but I see that they just don't have pride in their work and simply do not care about their customers. Our driveway is now in worse shape than it was when we had it replaced. Our concrete walkway? One of the slabs has sunk in and it's no longer level with the rest of the walkway leading up to the front door. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT trust Sandman Paving to do a good job. We hated to have to post a negative review previously on 11/1/2022, but it did finally get the attention of this company (phone messages hadn't) as we received a response from them on our Google review. It was an auto response, apologizing for our negative experience, & to call them. We did call them, were told by Eva that Jerry, the owner, would be at our home that week Saturday. Well, no show or call on that Saturday or since (yes, we stayed home all day waiting.) We called the following week, left a message about the no show by owner, & so far no call back (as we've experienced so many times with this company.) So frustrating but most of all disappointing. As consumers, all we want is fair treatment when buying a product, and the company to stand behind their product, especially when they admit there's a problem with their product, or application of their product. So our recommendation after struggling to get this company to help us now that they've long ago cashed our check: do not use them. So typical of contractors....Got a guy to come out to give me an estimate for a project I needed done. Guy came out, said he'd get back to me about a quote, never did. Called the company to follow up and get the quote and had to leave a message, only to never have the call returned. Guess these guys don't really want to work. read more

Sandman poured a new driveway at my residence last year.... During the install, they recommended that the concrete be sealed after it cures for a week... and they suggested that they could take care of it. I agreed - and paid the extra to have it sealed. I was a bit surprised, when the next day they showed up without notification and sealed it.....this, after recommending it cure for a week. Needless to say - this impatience on their part has created the worst looking driveway on my street... Parts of it are gray, parts white, parts green, parts look wet, parts look dry.... Because of the pre-mature sealing the driveway never cured correctly creating uneven and wave like patterns throughout.... What a disaster. I called them a month after - and they assured me that it would go away.... I called this Spring - and they seemed like they wanted to help - but no one called back. I called again today - and got nothing but an answering machine. Concrete work is an investment - don't waste your time with guys that are going to make excuses and not back their work. read more

Called for 2 quotes, one for a shared driveway in Elgin and a regular driveway in Carpentersville. Talked to the woman and explained I needed a bumpy driveway fixed, she said they don't do that. So I said I need a quote on a regular driveway and she said he'd get back to me. No call back. Call again and same woman, explain what I need, again, and she asks what I need done. I tell her I already told her and that she said he'd call back. He never did, and she gave me excuses as to why they can't do my driveway. We had Sandman's Paving replace our deteriorating asphalt driveway. They did, what we believe to be, a very good job. The driveway looks good. The asphalt perfectly matches up with the existing concrete (garage, front walk, sidewalk and curb). And it passed the village's inspections. We do not have the ability to do any type of qualitative analysis, so take this assessment for what it is - an opinion. Watching them work was impressive. Clearly, they know what they are doing. Each person has specific tasks and the process went smoothly. They started at 7:00 am and were done by 12:30 the same day - and that includes waiting for the gravel bed inspection before paving. They took care to not damage the sidewalk or any landscaping. When they were done, there was virtually no evidence that the driveway had just been replaced (other than it looks brand new). The only non-positive comment would be that it took a VERY long time to get them to commit to a schedule. After getting a quote and saying that we would like to proceed, it took nearly a month of continuous, unanswered, email and phone calls before finally getting a date for the construction. At the time of the quote, we were told that there was a two week lead time. That turned out to be closer to five weeks. Summary: Sandman's Paving is a good choice if you are not in any particular hurry. They do good work, but the customer service is severely lacking. read more

We had Sandman Paving replace our Driveway over 20 years ago and it had stayed in amazing shape, but needed some repair. I actually ran into Jerry, the owner in April 2019 doing a job in our neighborhood and he came by the house and inspected the driveway and said he could fix up the problems for us. First I needed to replace a 20 foot retaining wall and then call him. I had the retaining wall replaced by early June, so I called. I was told by the woman on the phone that Jerry doesn't do estimates. I called and left messages 5 or 6 times last year and got no response. So last month I filled out an online estimate form and sent it in. I got a call right back, but it seems that once the woman on the phone figured out who I was I can't get a response. I really wanted to have Sandman's do the work, as the original driveway had been done so well and looked pretty good in general. It is pretty sad that whoever is answering the phone decides who gets called back. Good luck Jerry! I wanted to spend some money, but now I am going elsewhere. read more

Contacted Sandman Paving for residential driveway resurface (overlay). I received quote, signed & returned, pulled permit with VOA. The plan was 3rd or 4th week of May. They contacted us with an earlier date and we were unavailable. Now 3 weeks later they do not want to do my driveway as they feel it will be more work and the they will not honor their quote. I called 5 times, sent an email and no one will respond. Bad business! read more

Was referred to Sandman's Paving by landstar construction. Mr. Sandman came to my home, shook my hand and that of my family and measured out the driveway. He took the time to explain to us, what needed to be done, what he will do and what the end result will be. We decided to have him do concrete work (5'x48' ft concrete apron that needed replacement in front of the house) too while we were ripping out our driveway. We decided to have other estimates done just to be safe. Petersen construction wanted 6500 and Woodstock paving wanted 6350. And another contractor wanted 6575. Sandman beat them out by submitting a proposal of 4144 for the work we wanted. Right off the bat though we decided to go with Mr.Sandman before getting other proposals. After getting permits, we contacted his office and he scheduled us right away! Next day to be exact! 7am Thursday morning he was knocking and shaking hands and bidding me and my family good morning. He worked fast and professionally. We ended up needing more stone and needing to haul more dirt and debris then thought (driveway was destroyed and poured on dirt and old concrete was 16" thick which nobody knew) so he bartered with us. He would keep the price the same, but be wanted a couple parts for his bobcat from my dad that we had. Well he had a deal. We gladly let him have the bobcat parts for his machines. He was very very adamant that he wanted the job done right, wasn't going to cut corners. This made me feel like he cared for me as his family member rather than a client. He took the time to take a concrete saw and cut out my old dogs paw prints in the old concrete and he also took the time to cut out me and my sisters hand prints from the old concrete to, so my mom can keep them. My mom was thrilled. Friday morning concrete truck was here at 630am. Guys got here shortly after. Again they worked efficiently and were nice to talk to. While the concrete was setting a bit before being broomed, the concrete truck left a little pile of concrete on the driveway gravel base. My dog was barking and the worker asked if we wanted to have my dogs paw prints in that concrete. We definitely said yes! He took his trowel and smoothed the small pile, and rounded it. He helped get my dog to get his paw prints in the concrete. It worked beautifully! He dated it for us and said to let it dry overnight before lifting it off the stone base. They let the concrete apron dry over the weekend. The apron came out fantastic! Had it done California style, couldn't be happier! It rained monday, so. No paving! Haha. Today (Tuesday) he was here at 930am. His guys got to work and started fixing my front yard. Mr.Sandman began laying asphalt and such. A couple hours later, he was finished. We asked him if he would overlay our pulloff. He did! And did not charge us! He also repaird a rut between our pulloff, the street and yard. He poured asphalt in the rut, and evened everything out and did not charge extra for the little extras. He took his roller and rolled my yard to prep it for sod and cleaned up the yard and make it look good. Overall, Sandmans paving and concrete is a fantastic contractor! Fair, honest, professional. My driveway and walk way look fantastic. I couldn't have asked for a better Job. Most definitely recommend!!! Can't wait for him to do my new patio next year! read more

Called for an estimate to add a third entrance for a three car garage. They scheduled to come out, but didn't show up. We called and scheduled again. This time they did show up. They didn't get back to us with an estimate. We called and called and called. Finally, a response saying they needed to talk to boss because the driveway was close to tree. Never received a call.. We called and called and called. At this point, we gave up. If you don't want to accept the job, tell the customer. Don't leave us hanging. Bad customer service. We waited for weeks. We could have moved on. We will be sharing this with all others who are remodeling/renovating their houses. :( read more

Jerry and his team did a wonderful job on our driveway. Our neighbor also had theirs completed with Sandman a week after ours was completed. The company is still friendly for after care advice. The summer is over and our driveway was sealed (by another company), I don't have a single thing that has not gone as expected. read more

We recently had concrete ribbons added on each side of our asphalt driveway and a new walkway poured to the front door. We had the California finish done and the work came out awesome! The workers did an excellent job of forming and did not disturb any of the grassy area. We have received many comments from our neighbors about the job. Would highly recommend them. They have done a lot of work in the village of West Dundee and even the village recommended them. Very happy customer!! read more

They quoted me for a four inch deep concrete add-on to my driveway (for a third car parking) and aprons along the side. My city rejected my plans once because the city wanted me to pour the add on five to six feet past my garage opening and rejected sandman three times because they advised that the code called for six inches (which I must say that sandman did not try to charge me for) the other two times was because of the depth and grade of the base. They also quoted me to cut out a section closest to the garage door and replace it with a 3 ft walk way. I believe when they tried to cut that out they damaged my asphalt portion of my driveway which they were not suppose to touch. I came home from work to find out that they pulled out everything. Now again, I'm not saying that I have a problem with what they charged me. They claimed that they did it on purpose and wanted it to look good and was replacing it for free. My gripe is, I couldn't be there to supervise because of work and I had taken time off when they we going to do the job, but because of weather delays, the job was pushed back. I would come home to a job site in shambles. I had an issue with no supervision from their team on the site (Supervisor was sick), no communication as for what they were doing and no communication to their team as for what I wanted or what the supervisor agreed to do. They agreed to provide sealer for the concrete and bury my two down spouts which apparently no one knew about. I had this in writing on my quote. After talking to the owner, (which wasn't pleasant, they spoke to me as if I should be grateful and that they were doing me a favor) they finally buried the down spouts and completed the concrete portion of the job. I came home to a very pissed off neighbor because their crew dragged their feet across their drive way and lawn. There was mud and dried up concrete everywhere. I spent the entire day scrubbing and cleaning their property. I don't know why they wouldn't scrape their feet on my property. The end of my drive way was trashed already and the owner agreed to come back and power wash it. (which never happened) The job was completed and I was left with a lot of clean up and with no sealer as promised. After many phone calls, someone dropped it off on porch. Fast forward 6 months later. the add on started to crack. Not big at first, but I was concerned, so I called them. They claimed that they didn't guaranty that it wouldn't crack and that it wasn't big and nothing to worry about. That crack grew to the entire length of the new add on. It went right down the middle and through the stress cracks. The supervisor answered my calls at first advising that they haven't opened yet and that they would be out to investigate. I advised that I wasn't looking for a free repair and that I was willing to work something out. He told me not to worry and he would take care of me. That was three months ago and no one will return my phone calls or emails. At this point, I don't think there's anything that this company can do to make things better. read more

I wouldn't give any stars if possible. I called last year mid June. Took 3 tries to get estimate. They cancelled twice, once with no explanation, and were impatient with working with me to reschedule at a time convenient for me even though they were the ones who failed to show up. When estimator finally came out, I explained I wanted special job done at end of driveway in addition to redoing main portion. The special job would need to have village involved. I was told Sandman would take care of all details and that Sandman would contact me with final estimate soon. Job would begin end of July. By mid August I had not heard anything. When I called, they had no record of my job. Nothing. No one communicates with each other. The office staff were difficult to deal with and even though this was their error, they made no reasonable effort to get my job done nor did they offer to refund my permit fee.
