LOVE Sandwich Creamery! This is a new location for them this year (2023). I was confused when our navigation system brought us here, but it had the same old wooden sign that used to hang at the previous location, the lights were on, and there was a neon open sign. It used to be on a long, bumpy, dirt road in the middle of nowhere, but they moved to a very nice corner store front on a paved road much closer to Sandwich. It's about 3.6 miles up the road from the Corner House Inn. The ice cream is delicious, and they have a great variety of flavors. My favorite is the lemon squeeze. My son loves the grasshopper pie. We also like the black raspberry and coffee kisses. It was very well stocked tonight with half pints, pints, and quarts of lemon squeeze, chocolate chip, cinnamon chocolate & espresso, black bear, oreo, black raspberry chocolate chip, cookie dough, peppermint stick, strawberry, mint chocolate chip, peach, ginger, coffee kisses, cow tracks, dirt road, s'mores, chocolate, and grasshopper pie. This place is a hidden gem... I almost didn't want to leave a review and let people know about. But, that wouldn't be nice to keep all the yumminess to myself! To get to their shop, you really feel like you're going the wrong way... you have to drive down quite a bit of a bumpy, private dirty road. Don't be deterred; you are going the right way; you will get there; you won't regret it. Once you do arrive, you see a small shed like building. You go in and it is nicely decorated with two coolers and pre-packed ice cream in three different sizes. It is cash only and all on the honor system. You write down in a book what you took and put your cash in a slot. There were a variety of flavors to choose from. My friends and I got moose tracks, coffee, MJB and chocorua [i may have spelled that wrong] orange. The MJB (mocha ice cream with chocolate covered espresso beans) was my favorite, but everything got rave reviews! If you don't plan on eating it there... or on your way back home (they have eco-friendly wooden spoons), make sure to bring yourself a cooler and ice. We drove on to the outskirts of Sandwich to find the Sandwich Creamery. This is certainly one ice cream shop that is off the beaten path. We drove down a rutted road for quite some time until we found the creamery. However, it certainly was worth the drive. How neat that the creamery is operated on an honesty system. The prices are so reasonable, small $3.00, medium $4.00 and large $6.00. There is a slot where you place your money to pay. How refreshing to see that people can be trusted to do this in this day and age. Evidently, they had done a brisk business this beautiful fall day as they were out of so many flavors. My husband was thrilled with his peppermint ice cream and our friend savored her Mexican Jumping Bean ice cream. We have a summer home nearby and had always meant to come visit ... we finally got around to it this summer. The atmosphere, with animals, picnic area, and the scenic drive are nice. The ice cream, however, was very disappointing. There is NO WAY this is homemade. As another reviewer pointed out, the ingredients list would suggest factory made. It was no better than cheap store brand ice cream, in my opinion, but much more expensive. Very dishonest and deceptive. If you have small kids who might like the animals, then visit ... but if you want good ice cream, you're better off going to Skelley's in Moultonborough, who carry homemade ice cream from Richardson's Farm, or Ben & Jerry's in Meredith. Or, actually, ANYWHERE that sells ice cream... I honestly feel duped, falling for the suggestion of homemade ice cream when it was factory crap. Don't believe any of the reviews claiming it's "the best ice cream in the US" - these people are judging the quaint packaging and farmy atmosphere much more than taste! Giving 5 stars for the experience. It is a small vintage cottage, that I found to be the opposite of "disappointing" and very cool and different! Also I thought it was fun to see the farm animals, not sure how you could expect more than that from a small ice cream place. Prices were cheap but be sure to bring change. Ice cream was good, not sure if it's homemade or not but still good. Long drive down but very scenic, we even saw a small black bear along the way! Quaint sitting area outside. Our apologies for the mix up, however we did leave 20% extra, which will make up for any cost discrepancy. This place is amazing. Don't come expecting a tour or a boutique to sit and eat ice cream. This is a working dairy, they have small batch cheese that they sell in a small room at the end of their office and production facility. They don't staff the sales counter, the entire process is on the honor system. A word of caution and thanks: I called to see if the creamery was open today due to a winter storm we had in the area yesterday. Tom answered and warned me to be careful of the icy roads. We made it successfully to the creamery, and my girls had a blast building a snowman just outside the shop. When we left the creamery I slid off the road just up the hill. With little to no options, and no snow experience, I called the creamery and asked Tom if he was able to assist. To make a long story short, Tom and Lisa were amazing, they helped dig out our car, push it out of the ditch and got me back up the hill. I really want to give the creamery 5 stars...for their cheeses alone, along with the quaint location it's a 5+. However, I encountered a serious issue with their ice cream. While they don't claim to be "homemade" or "made from scratch" one would think that a small creamery in the middle of the woods would have all-natural, farm fresh ice cream. Yet, at the sandwich creamery I found high fructose corn syrup, guar gum, and other ingredients that I have never found at any "made on the farm" creamery, and I was disappointed! I'm not even certain they have the required levels of milk fat to be considered ice cream and not "frozen dairy dessert." I even heard a rumor that someone saw generic ice cream mix being dropped off at the creamery not too long ago. I was a little hesitant to post a review of the Sandwich Creamery on Yelp, in fear that too many people would find out about it. But seeing as there are only 3 reviews, I would have to agree with Devin E. that this is still a very well kept secret of NH. My boyfriend and I were camping with some friends right near Chocorua, and after hicking the mountain and going kayaking in the river, finishing off with a swim in Ossipee Lake, we headed over to visit one of his old friends who had moved to that area. As a "local", he told us some great spots to check out while we were still in town. When I heard "ice cream", my ears percked up and I had a taste for it, and fast! We headed to Sandwich, driving down one dirt road after another in search of this little cottage on Hannah Road. This ice cream and cheese shop is a small, adorable cottage that sits on a farm with chickens, cows and sheep. There is a freezer filled with fresh made pints of ice cream in 20 different flavors and a refigerator of fresh wheels and tubs of cheese. In the morning they restock all of the fresh goodies and then take off. Payment is all based on the honor system, they have a slot for paper money and a sink filled with change. If only we could have something like this in Boston, but alas, the whole idea of it would be ruined by city punks taking free ice cream. Since we were camping, and did not have proper refrigeration, we did not buy any cheese (although they all looked absolutely divine). We each got a medium of our perfered ice cream; him, mint chocolate chip, me, "cow tracks" (vanilla with fudge and peanut butter cups), and we split a small of cookie dough. All three of them were the perfect creaminess with just the right amount of mint, and peanut butter cups, respectively. As we ate our ice cream we walked along the dirt road as the sun set, looking at the cows munching away on their grass. It was beautiful. read more

The extent of the "creamery" is a shack consisting of a 10'x10' room with a freezer case of pre-packed ice cream and a standup refrigerator with a few packages of their cheeses. It's all honor system so you leave your money in a slot in the wall. We just happened to see 2 cows in the "field", which is more accurately a pen, across the street - is this the extent of the dairy source? There is not a soul to be found so don't expect to learn a blessed thing about this place, or see how they work, or taste their products without committing to a purchase. Two dirt roads to get to the small store, both are short and well maintained. My sports car was able to make the traverse in one piece. The store uses the honor system, you leave your money in a slot in the wall. I sampled three of their cheeses; a welsh caerphilly which was the best of the three and very good. An aged cheddar which was also very good and a french coulommier which was white and flaky with a typical farmers cheese taste. They sell Sunnyfield bread from a bakery in Wonalaneet, New Hampshire. The cheese and the bread make the fixings of a fantastic picnic lunch along with a local bottle of wine. The ice cream is another matter. I was surprised to hear another reviewer say they saw a delivery of ice cream mix from Hood. If this was the case I would have expected a much better product. The ice cream we sampled had a hard icy texture and lacked creaminess. The worst part however was the flavor, very artificial and strong. The physical setup was disappointing. Small room. One medium size freezer. No where to sit inside. Very few sitting options outside. AND nothing else to do but see a few sheep and a cow. Disappointed in the ice cream. Nothing special. Honestly. I did like how you paid. Honor system. Wonder if it really works? Probably won't be back. Best cheddar I have ever had. The Caerphilly is delicious too. We survived the white-knuckle ride today because they sanded the solid ice that is coating all the roads right now. For me I could have gone with 2 or 3 stars for this, but I went with two because it seems everyone else is raving about this spot. I have to admit that after the hike up to this creamery and arriving It wasn't what I was expecting. I wanted to see lots of cows and people at work. I think there was a baby cow there but not the milking kind. I found the sales stand, but where the heck are the cows??? Also, I looked on the website and on the ice cream cartons and was not 100% convinced that they actually make this ice cream here. Where is the story of this place...not on the cartons or online ( I wanted that experience). I like the idea of the loyalty system way to pay, but don't be fooled you are on camera here. If you go at night bring a flashlight because they can't be bothered to put a proper light in for their customers. This place has nothing on Ben and Jerry's!!! They skimp on toppings in the pints etc. I did enjoy the maple walnut ice cream, but I found that the rest weren't very creamy....its homemade right??? shouldn't it be really, really creamy? -This place could be great if they changed a few things and made a little better ice cream. I travel wing road near daily and I often see hood trucks going to Sandwich Creamery to drop off the ice cream mix they use to make their ice cream... "homemade ice cream" huhh... real hommade ice cream is made from homemade base... not hood mix... nice false advertising.
