Maria's Tacos y Más - Nachos with Chorizo & Steak -- "The Food Truck That Had No Business Being…read moreThis Good" I only review nachos. One plate, one standard. And this one is at a taco truck in the Exxon station at Beracasa Way and Palmetto. Don't let the address fool you. I'll be honest. I don't really eat at food trucks. Novelty stops, not places you expect to outcook a restaurant. Then I went through the internet's top-ten nacho lists, discovered the internet and I have very different standards, and the quest demanded a wider net. Maria's was on the list. I pulled in with zero expectation of being impressed. I was impressed. The menu is clean -- homemade tortilla chips, melted cheese, pico, pickled jalapeños, avocado crema, cotija, cilantro, onion. Every single ingredient belongs on a nacho. No mystery feta hidden in the queso. Julio, who works the truck, told me to get the chorizo AND steak. Julio was right. Write that down. The chips are homemade and held up all the way to the bottom, zero soggy chips, including the layer under the refried beans, which is more than nachos twice this price have managed. The cheese (likely Oaxaca) had a proper melt. Both proteins were seasoned and cooked correctly, chorizo bringing smoke and spice, steak bringing substance. And the jalapeños had actual heat that built as I ate, which in this series is cause for celebration. I've eaten too many decorative circles that contributed nothing. The Fork Rule got violated, but for the first time in the series, by enthusiasm, not failure. The plate looked so good coming out of that truck that waiting wasn't an option. The fork was a choice, not a rescue. It came out hot and fast -- 3.5 minutes, the quickest plate I've clocked. It was warm by the time I ate it, but that's on me: there's nowhere to sit at the truck, so I drove 15 minutes home first. The kitchen did its job. My commute undid it. Not a mark against them. 9/10 -- The Food Truck That Had No Business Being This Good. I finished every chip. From a gas station. The quest is full of surprises. -- Florida Nacho Man. Maria's Tacos Y Mas is my go-to spot for tacos and burritos, and I've been coming here at least…read moretwice a week for a while now. The barbacoa is my personal favorite, but honestly you can't go wrong with any of the proteins--the chicken, steak, al pastor, and shrimp are all excellent. What really sets this place apart are the sauces. Julio, the owner and head chef, makes them all from scratch. The verde sauce is fresh, flavorful, and mild, while the hot sauce has the perfect balance of heat and flavor. The portions are consistently generous, and you can tell they take pride in every order. Don't let the food truck fool you--this is restaurant-quality food made by people who genuinely care about what they serve. In all the times I've eaten here, I've never had an order made incorrectly or a meal that wasn't excellent. Great food, great people, and consistently one of the best taco spots around. Highly recommend!

I just moved to the area and always see this food truck and wanted to try it for a while now…read more There's always a line, so I assumed the food had to be good. I decided to stop one afternoon while running errands.. there was a short line, but it was pretty fast once you know what you're ordering. The food is cooked to order, so I did have to wait about 10 minutes, which was fine with me because I ran another errand and came back for my food. I was so excited to try it, being part Cuban, the menu was filled with food I grew up on. I gave up meat almost a year ago, but I was willing to sacrifice it all lol and had no regrets.. I ordered a beef empanada, which was seasoned to perfection, I also ordered a media noche and a materva. The media noche was put together well. It was a huge sandwich. I noticed on their menu that they did have some cooked food options, along with some sides, like fries and Tostones, they also sell homemade juices.. I will be back to try everything. It does look like it's a husband and wife team, the guy took my order and he was super nice. They do have two chairs to sit down on, there is no outdoor seating, it's a grab and go, or sit in your car type of thing. Well worth the try.

We were in the mood for a cafe con leche and tostada and this place delivered. It delivered so much that we went back a second day to taste the sandwiches and comete meal (una completa). My hubby also tried the Mamey shake and these folks are the real deal. We are Cuban and trying to find a place that serves authentic and fresh a Cuban is hard in this area. Well, search no more. The owners are a super cute Cuban couple who definitely know what they are doing and are willing to g to answer any questions for those that may not be familiar. We had the croquetas and they are amongst the best croquetas I've ever had -- you heard me right. Crispy outside and perfectly mixed and ground ham on the inside. They melt in your mouth. The cafe is La Llave and you can have it with or without sugar and with or without milk. How do you know they are really Cuban? Easy...the mamey, guanábano, fresa, or whatever shake you want is made with milk and leche condensada...not water and sugar. That's the sign of a real Cuban. The lechón was seasoned to perfection and don't even get me started on the black beans. Dee-licious. The sandwiches are made with fresh Cuban bread and they press it down (as it should be). One San which lasted me for lunch and dinner. The same with the lechón meal. With a great variety for all of your needs, the great and friendly service and the easy parking pull up, we will come back again and again. They are at their spot Thursday through Sunday from 11:30am-6:30pm so you still have time to get there now. Each time we've gone, we've met regulars that wouldn't miss their daily orders. Go, go, go!! You're going to love it.

The chef said yes, made them from scratch, and wouldn't take a dime. What arrived was outstanding. House BBQ brisket, stripped perfectly for a nacho chip, which almost *nobody gets right*. Fresh queso that actually delivered. Avocado crema drizzled throughout. Cotija crumbled on top. Bell peppers adding color and brightness, and the chips held under the Fork Rule. This was a prototype. Eight chips. Not hot. Stale chips cost them points. The metal tin showed up uninvited as always, and it still scored an 8.5. Two things stand between Los Bocados and the highest nacho score in this series: fresh chips and the right vessel. Everything else is already there. If you want these nachos -- and you do -- walk up and ask nicely. The chef may just make them for you. Florida Nacho Man accepts full responsibility for anyone showing up and citing this review as justification. 8.5 / 10 -- The Missing Nacho. It isn't on the menu. It should be. FIVE STARS. GAS STATION? YES. GAS STATION? ALSO YES…read more Let's get something straight. Some of the best food on earth comes from places that look like you shouldn't trust them. Gas stations. Side streets. Tiny counters with three tables and a refrigerator humming in the corner. I saw WhatSub on Yelp and thought, "Alright. Let's see if the hype survives State Road 7." It didn't just survive. It flexed. I am fully on board with five-star gas station cuisine. In fact, I seek it out. And WhatSub doesn't just play the game -- it competes internationally. This place comes dangerously close to Sandwich Master in Turin, Italy. I'm not exaggerating. And it narrowly beats out Generoso's in Coral Springs, which is not an easy feat. The bread? Legit. The meats? Layered like someone actually respects the architecture of a sandwich. The balance? No soggy mess. No overkill. No amateur hour. And then the cannoli. Freshly piped. Not pre-filled. Not sitting there getting sad and humid. Fresh. Filled to order. Shell still crisp. Ricotta smooth and balanced -- not overly sweet, not grainy, not lazy. Best cannoli I've had in South Florida since Lorenzo's in North Miami Beach. That's not a casual comparison. That's a statement. Now let's talk atmosphere. It's technically in a gas station plaza -- and yet the owners and staff are actually speaking Italian behind the counter. Not performative. Not touristy. Just normal conversation like you accidentally stepped into a deli in Torino. It feels real. So real that I went back the next day. And then again. I am not joking. When I ask myself, "What was my favorite thing?" the answer is dangerous: Everything I ordered. Cold subs. Hot subs. Cannoli. Repeat. This is the kind of place you almost don't want to write about because once the word spreads, lines get longer and secrets disappear. But credit where credit is due. WhatSub is proof that greatness doesn't need chandeliers. Sometimes it just needs good bread, proper technique, and someone who actually cares.

Came here because I saw it was a new Italian sub shop near my area. Saw good reviews and wanted to…read moretry it myself. Behind the counter was a husband/wife duo who were the business owners (didn't get their names) who stated they were from Sicily. After much deliberation, I decided to order the Arthur Ave and the Milano. The Arthur Ave is a cold sandwich that had prosciutto, arugula, stracciatella, sun dried tomato. You have a choice of bread from white, wheat rolls, and focaccia. I was informed by the husband the focaccia is made fresh daily by his wife so of course I had to try that. The wife was nice enough to let me try a sample of the prosciutto and I have to say -- it was delicious, so getting it on a sandwich was going to be a no-brainer. The Milano was for my father. Watching them make the sandwich, they put two huge pieces of chicken cutlet, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and freshly sliced mozzarella. Again, I got the focaccia bread. Both sandwich's were drizzled on the top of the focaccia bread with fresh Italian olive oil which was just the cherry on top. I had told the owners it was my first time and we had a great conversation, that they were nice enough to give me and my parents 3 free mini cannolis -- which was completely unexpected and highly appreciated! As far as the food goes, I don't have enough adjectives in my vocabulary to describe how delicious this sandwich was. From the delicious meats, the fresh veggies, and my personal favorite part -- that focaccia bread. I would buy that alone. They had specials on their menu the day I went that was a not on their menu -- a meatball sub and arancini balls. Also, keep in mind, that this shop is inside the Mobil gas station on 441 and SW 18th. There is a sign on the outside of the gas station, but if you're driving by and unsure of the location, I can confirm it is inside the Mobil. Overall, a great experience; delicious food, great people behind the counter. Only caveat I would say is it is a little bit higher price for a sandwich, but with the current economy where a McDonalds burger is over 10 bucks, you truly get what you pay for and that is top quality, fresh and delicious food. Will definitely be coming back here in the future.
