The good: the value. For $9, I will be able to eat two meals. The bad: I love drunken noodle. Like, love so much that even when I can barely feel my tongue anymore due to the spice, I still can't get enough. This dish was a mere shadow of that. First, drunken noodle is supposed to be spicy. There was ZERO spiciniess and not even a sad bottle of sriracha she put out upon request could save it. The tofu was cold and had not been properly heated up before mixing with the noodles. Also, there were big chunks of basil stem all over my dish that she just through in with the rest of the basil. It was just sloppy, and it didn't taste that good. I was expecting more, Sang. This food truck is absolutely amazing! The drunken noodles with chicken is the best I've ever had, perfectly spiced with some sort of sweet and sour sauce (spicy if you prefer spicy), fresh basil, and other yummy goodness. Ans they have generous portions. I was already craving more after just one trip. The thai tea is also great. The other plus - Sang, the lady who runs the truck is really nice! My boyfriend was really looking forward to trying their lemonade, but it was sold out (it was toward the end of the food trucks' Trucko de Mayo event). He just mentioned this, no complaining (as many other food trucks had also sold out food), but Sang offered him a big extra helping of drunken noodles for free! The Drunken Noodles were disappointing. The noodles were very nicely cooked and didn't stick together too badly, which was nice. But the vegetables were basically raw when they should have been cooked, and there was too much sauce on the dish. The tofu and vegetables should have been in bite sized pieces instead of massive chunks (food truck food should be easy to eat on a park bench). I'm also not sure why they don't offer more Laotian dishes instead of generic Asian food. read more

Tried Sang on Wheels when they came to Patriot Circle on 12/7/2016. I usually go for the Mediterranean truck and grab a Gyro Platter, but I wanted to try something a bit different, and Lao Cuisine definitely constituted the "different" category! I went with their lunch special, where I chose a combo of meatballs & shrimp, over rice, with an egg roll and iced tea. They definitely do not disappoint as far as portion size goes. To get ALL of that food for $12 is kind of a steal for DC Lunch. That being said, as excited as I was leaving the truck with a ton of food, I was as disappointed when I ended up throwing half of it out :/ I will start with the Meatballs & Shrimp, probably the only redeeming quality about the lunch. They were HOT and FRESH! Very delicious, and I enjoyed them. The meatball got kind of gross a few bites in, but I have that type of reaction to meatballs, so no demerit to Sang on Wheels. The Shrimp were plump and juicy and had me wishing I had (3) more! The rice was quizzical. I am a rice aficionado, and this rice just did not meet the mark! It was strangely sweet, and had weird bits of dark stuff in it. Also, mixed in was just a regular old bag of mixed frozen veggies. That being said, I might just not like that type of Lao rice. HOWEVER, there was no excuse for it having been as cold as it was. It's like it wasn't even reheated! That definitely disappointed me, and ended up with me throwing most of it out. Now, the egg rolls that came with it were more like spring rolls, you get (2). They basically tasted like sweet mashed potatoes inside of egg roll paper. They weren't super crispy, but sometimes that's OK, especially in an office setting when you're trying to eat quietly. They could've thrown a bit of cilantro in there to spice it up I suppose but they were OK. Lastly was the ice tea, which I promptly threw out because I hate ice tea, but maybe someone who likes ice tea would love it! Besides I had a Diet Mountain Dew, my drink of choice, so I had no need for said ice tea. OVERALL, I would not return. read more

for a city devoid of quality authentic asian food, i'm glad that there's a food truck roaming around town filling our appetites. and i have to give them some additional kudos because it takes some guts to throw out something on the ethnic of ethnic cuisines (even if it really isn't all that crazy, just that most folks don't have much of a sense of what laotian is). my first experience with sang on wheels came at truckaroo earlier this month. i got there late so options became limited, but i was glad that sang's was still open and serving up some quality drunken noodles. be warned though, if you ask for spicy, it is SPICY. but what's really great is that the portions will definitely fill you up. as a lover of authenticity when it comes to asian cuisine, i'm all in on anything - restaurant, take-out, or food truck - that delivers. read more

Oh my god! Sang is just the sweetest person running any food truck I've ever been to! She's always so happy and she overloads you with free food ("Here -- I give you another container -- you give it to your wife tonight, OK? Oh, and you've never tried the lamb meatballs? OK, I give you a box of those too -- no charge!"). I went to this food truck by Franklin Square last week and was excited to see drunken noodles on the menu, even if it was with tofu. The drunken noodles are spicy which was exciting and the portions are quite big for $6. You have the option of adding one of the BBQ meats to your drunken noodles but that would be a lot of food. I was going to try the egg rolls but there was a 10 minute wait-sadness. I would definitely return! read more

Decided to go with Drunken Noodles with Lamb Balls and Soup. They were out of soup but she gave me an empanada instead. Huge portion for the noodles with three midget-fist sized lamb meatballs. Soft and tasty. The noodles spicy, flavorful. And the empanada came with some sauce. It was man-fist sized, crispy like an egg roll, juicy and meaty on the inside with veggies. So good. I figured I'd try this food truck out after seeing the high ratings, so I went today when it was outside L'Enfant Plaza... Could not have been more disappointed! I got drunken noodles, which had a pretty bland taste, the veggies were still very hard and didn't taste like they were cooked at all, and the chicken was added as skewered chicken and was incredibly dry. I think they give enormous portion sizes to make up for the lack of taste. The egg rolls weren't bad, and they did throw in a free Thai ice tea, which is why I gave them two stars instead of one. Get the chicken! The women who run the truck decided to give me a heaping portion of everything (beef, lamb and chicken) when i asked what they liked best. The chicken is incredible. Sang on Wheels is guaranteed delicious satiation!!! The first impressions of Sang's food truck are immediately positive. First of all, there is Sang herself. Such a sweet woman who, no matter how busy she is, wants to make sure you are getting exactly what you want. "Do you like spicy things, I have just the thing," or "Are you a vegetarian, well here is what is veggie and here is what is not!" Secondly, you know you have found a good spot when a menu that makes it very difficult to choose between all of the delicious sounding items. I have been a long-standing customer of Sang's and everything that I have eaten (pad thai, drunken noodles, papaya salad, egg rolls, empanadas, fried rice, garden rolls) has left me very happy with my choice. I am person who always loves the feeling of getting a bang (implies: taste, portion, vegetables) for my buck and Sang and her food truck do that AND MORE!!! Put simply, Sang is by far one of your best bets for a great lunch which happens to come at a great price as well. Also, if you need a haircut, Sang does that too and does it very well. Having a Vietnamese co-worker, I was looking forward to sharing this new truck with him but, unfortunately the food was not all that memorable. I would best describe the meal as heavy and dense. The meatballs were more like a wad of dense meat and the rice was thick and heavy. On the plus side, there was a ton of it for $8. read more

3.5 stars. I would have given it a 4 if the meatballs were cooked more thoroughly and the vegetables were cut a little more skillfully and in bite size pieces. It's so nice to have such a variety of cuisines all lined up on one street afforded to hungry office workers during a very busy lunchtime. I'm just loving the food trucks scene even though it can get mobbed since everyone seems to feel the same way. When possible, I almost always arrive early around 11am to avoid the rush so I can (1) take my time to do at least one walkthrough and read the day's menus and (2) get back to the office and chow down. Today, I was delayed and ended up going around 11:45a.m. but suprisingly the lines weren't too bad even with people paying with their credit cards. Prior to heading out, I went to the foodtrucks website to find out which vendors were on Franklin St. Only a few trucks had listed themselves at the time and when I saw Sang on Wheels, I did a Ctrl Alt Del and headed out. On my way there I was envisioning the food to be similar to Vietnamese with flavors of fish sauce, chili, a little sweet, and not too spicy. While I was waiting, one of Sang's employees offered me a free drink, either a lemonade or thai iced tea (my selection). So finally my turn came and I ordered (with no noodles or rice) just vegetables and the lamb meatballs. Unlike other reviews, I didn't have a "glumpy" or "gooey" experience; this may be due to my order did not include the rice noodles, which when it's cooked too long can take on that texture and appearance. My order was literally stuffed into a styrafoam container which was about the size you'd fit a to go hot dog. As far as taste goes, the veggies, coated in a savory, light soy based sauce and fresh basil leaves,were cut fairly large and could have probably used a few more minutes to cook. I was a little grossed out when I cut into the lamb: could have definitely used another 5-10 minutes too because it was just too pink and mushy soft. Incidently this would have been fine with a loin of lamb but I don't take too many chances with any ground meat products. I wasn't too disappointed because there was plenty of veggies and tofu to hold me over. So I set the lamb aside and will cook at home, probably have it for dinner. As far as Sang is concerned, she seems to have a bubbly personality, and was all smiles. I think she was offering me a spring roll for free but didn't realize it until after I read others' reviews...next time. And yes, there will be a next time because I will have to order the green papaya salad and enjoy the refreshing thai iced tea. read more

In reality I give Sang on Wheels 3.5 stars, but the woman cooking (Sang?) brings it up to 4. I got the drunken noodles with chicken and Lao ice tea. They added two spring rolls just because, which was a good start. Meal came out fast, and I know she added extra chicken. There were a few too many mushrooms for my taste, but I loved the carrots and broccoli. The broccoli had this sweet element that was delicious. The noodles were better than average, cooked and on the soft side of firm and firm side of mushy. There were quite a few stuck together, but that happens when you cook noodles en masse. The portion was tremendous. If the 2 guys in my area were in they would have gotten a free lunch. I are less than half, and I feel like a pig. The Lao ice was really nice, it had a condensed milk flavor to it, which is something I love from Vietnamese iced coffee. The spring rolls were decent. I'm not a big fan of fried, but they were stuffed to the gills with so starch. I would eat at this truck again. Although food wise, I wish the noodles had more of a kick. read more

Best about this food truck is the extremely nice woman who serves the food. The noodles are quite ok - although the drunken noodles definitely could have been spicier. The shrimp were big and perfectly cooked. There was a huge amount of food, mostly noodles of course. I ate about 1/3 of the noodles, 3 of the shrimp, and stashed the rest for dinner and maybe lunch tomorrow. I would not recommend the eggrolls - they were crunchy, but I couldn't figure out what the filling was - mashed potatoes maybe? I'm giving Sang on Wheels a 5/5 rating because it's truck food with eats that are truly unique and are as good or better than you'll find in most Asian restaurants. Please read the entire review since you might not have the same criteria for what makes a great food truck as I do. I love food trucks but am sometimes disappointed by those who serve food that is good but not great. I get that these are businesses who have to please a wide variety of customers and still make a profit so it's safer to serve food that will appeal to a range of tastes rather than risk alienating anyone with food that is very unique. I also understand how hard it is to serve food that is consistently good, especially from a truck. I applaud the many trucks out there who manage to be consistently good but give extra points for those like Sang who try for something memorable. Sang describes her food as Laotian which might not be familiar to some but tasting her food shows the overlapping of cuisines in this part of Asia. If you like good Thai food Lao cuisine will be a treat for you. Many Thai dishes have been influenced by Lao cuisine including larb a salad found on most Thai menus. In addition Sang serves Pad Thai and Pad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodles) which are two of the most popular of Thai noodle dishes. While Pad Thai is one of Thailand's national dishes, drunken noodles were a gift to Thai cuisine from Chinese immigrants in Laos and Northern Thailand. Sang's drunken noodles are some of the best I've ever had. She understands the complex layering of flavors that make this dish great. The anise flavor of Bai Horapa (sweet basil), spicy chile peppers, sweet baby corn and carrots, savory and salty Pahdek (fish sauce) with perhaps some soy and oyster sauce all combine to create a dish that is memorable and a joy to eat bite after bite. To put it bluntly, I found Sang on Wheels to be terrible, I was only able to eat less than half of the meal, leaving me hungry an hour later! To be fair, I should mention that according to the owner, Friday when I went, was only the second day of operations for this Laotian food truck. But I get the feeling it is not just the inevitable opening week hiccups that caused the food to be SO bad. I think they just have bad food (and bad truck design/decor, uninspired staff, and messy set up). The owner was very friendly and outgoing, but another crew member hanging outside the truck was loudly complaining that he had not eaten lunch yet; apparently he was supposed to be passing out samples but he gave up after a few minutes and proceeded to scarf down the samples himself! BBQ, noodle+rice was the menu posted on twitter, so on the walk over I was envisioning satay style bbq on a bed of fresh noodles, boy did I set my self up for a let down. I ordered the lamb with noodles and I was very quickly (too quick to be fresh) served my food. Lets start with the "bbq" lamb, satay it was not! Basically it was two big meat balls cut in half and put on a stick. It is very apparent just by looking at these mystery meat balls that they are not grilled, so not sure how they call it bbq. My best guess based on the cooking marks and overall look is that they were mass cooked in an oven pan and then warmed up on the griddle. They ended up tasting even worse than they looked, the meat was strangely very soggy, almost water logged and had a very strange taste (even for lamb), I couldn't get past the 2nd bite before tossing it, and I NEVER toss out food; I am usually able to eat through the pain, this time I could not. The noodles while not horrible, did not seem very fresh nor where that impressive, they tasted like something that came off an $5.99 all-you-can-eat buffet. When ordering the owner asked me if I wanted fresh lemonade for $2 more, I'm always a fan of fresh lemonade so I agreed. I guess next time I should differentiate between fresh squeezed lemonade (which I thought I was getting) and just fresh lemonade which could mean freshly poured in a cup (which is what I got). This "fresh" Lemonade ended up being Lemon drink, you know the powdered stuff (eg sugar, water, yellow), yuck! So I left my lunch less than half eaten, took 2 sips of the overly sweet lemon drink and that was the end of that. I cannot fathom giving this truck another chance, I highly recommend avoiding this truck, even if it means skipping lunch! ****This rating is in comparison to other food trucks only*** I have tried about ten different food trucks so far in the dc area. Sang on Wheels is definitely in my top three. I had drunken noodles with chicken, egg rolls, and their lemonade. The lemonade cup is HUGE! I felt so greedy walking back to the office with it. lol. Anyway, EVERYTHING was good. The drunken noodles had a hint of spice but overall not spicy. It had so much flavor. You can taste every ingredient that usually goes into drunken noodles. Far from bland. The portions are a lot for what you pay. You have enough to eat for lunch and dinner. The egg rolls are a must. They are nice and crunchy on the outside but full of flavor on the inside. I tried them recently for the first time at the Trucko de Mayo event. Man was I impressed. The tofu was cooked perfectly (not mushy or flavorless like many places cook it) and the drunken noodles tasted like they were freshly made. Also, there were a lot of fresh herbs thrown into the delicious mix. The servings are very generous, in fact- you'll probably have to save some for left overs. I got the drunken noodles and lemonade when I went there. The flavor of the drunken noodles was pretty good. However, some of the morsels I got looked like leftovers that had been stuck to the bottom of the pan (burnt and broken into pieces). Maybe it was because I got there towards the end of the stop. The lemonade tastes like chemicals, so I suggest getting the iced tea instead. I would definitely come back and give it a try because the flavor and texture of the noodles were really pretty good for what you can get around L'enfant / Federal Center. read more

I got the veggie drunken noodles with lamb meatballs and an iced tea. I personally like thai iced tea, but half the fun is when its half tea half cream. This was pre-mixed, and wasnt very good. I was happy it was free (first ten customers get free lemonade or iced tea), because I actually threw it out. Like others have said, the portions are large and if you dont want to fill up on a ton on asian food in the middle of the work day, you can split it into two lunches. The lamb meatballs were a little greasy but tasty. The noodles, however, lacked that delicious flavor I expected and were bland. If in the winter time I'm craving asian, I might return for noodles, but until then, I much prefer the other food trucks. read more

I stood in line for at least 10 minutes, the truck was busy. I LOVE drunken noodles but I got the chicken ones and ended up with only 3 pieces of chicken and a TON of tofu. I also got the sticky rice with mango and received an extra helping of protein that came in the form of an insect which looked like a tick/bed bug type. I would pass. There are plenty of good Thai places in the area to eat there. I had chicken pad thai, the sauce was too salty, chicken cold, way too many nuts piled on. The noodles also were the wrong type, they seemed like thin glass doodles. The Papaya Salad was pretty good and fresh, when I asked if it was spicy as most of them are I was told no but I could make it spicy by adding sriracha.
