After receiving a diagnosis of severe spinal fracture from an orthopedic physician's assistant and being sent back to work with nothing but a referral for neurosurgery, I needed to see a reputable neurosurgeon urgently. I was referred to Dr. Vokshoor by another reputable surgeon and I had to wait more than a month to see him. Dr. Vokshoor ordered a bunch of tests in order to properly assess and determine the condition of my cervical spine. I am waiting for authorization to have these tests done and it's not easy being off work without pay, but I have peace of mind knowing that I am being treated with a high level of conscience and expertise. read more

I mean, I was crawling 3 weeks before surgery and I was upright and strolling after the clean out he did on my L-4, L-5 disc. The office and staff were efficient and pleasant. I'm only giving 5 stars because you don't have the option of 10, or 100. As far as I'm concerned, this guy is a genius. Back operations have notoriously iffy outcomes. I went to see Dr. Vokshoor at the recommendation of my GP. I was in nearly unbearable pain...9+ on the usual hospital scale. Generally, as an athlete, I have a higher pain tolerance than most, but this was nerve pain, and had gone on for 3 months. It was searing, jagged, and occupied my right leg from hip to big toe. Dr. Vokshoor was confident of a great outcome, and I'm delighted to say he was completely right (didn't want to say "nailed it" in this context...) I am not only pain free, but back to exercising with no restrictions. I cannot recommend him highly enough. In addition, he's a sweet, considerate man, whose surgical skill is matched by an ability to listen...maybe that's even more important. read more

Dr. Vokshoor performed a ACDF and bone spur removal in 2012 and 2014. I have had absolutely no problems with my neck at all. With some physical therapy I am pain free, I kid you not. He was compassionate and will not immediately suggest surgery unless absolutely necessary. His jokes aren't too good, put his professional skills are as good as it gets. I first met Dr Vokshoor in February 2020 he came highly recommended by my pain management doctor. He told me I needed surgery at the L4-5 and L3-4 level which I already knew. He explained everything in detail and took his time with me . I decided surgery was the best option for me and he was the one to do it. I was experiencing extreme lower back pain and sciatic nerve pain in my right leg. I had an MRI done right before the July 4th weekend. My family doctor advised me to consult a specialist and gave me a few names including Dr. Vokshoor's. I phoned his office and left a message that I would like to schedule an appointment after the holiday for a consultation. He personally phoned me back on July 3rd!! He listened to my description of my history and symptoms, he was sympathetic. We had the consultation, he ultimately performed a microdiscectomy. He and his staff were very thorough in preparing me for what to expect both pre and post-surgery. I have been pain-free since the August 2020 procedure and have also been able to return to officiating high school basketball. I recommend him highly. read more

Dr. Vokshoor really cares about his patients... In mid-November, my left arm began to hurt. The pain soon became severe and was unbearable. During my first visit with Dr. Vokshoor, he told me that surgery was my only option based on my MRI, which showed a collapse of three of my cervical discs. Expecting that he would give me non-surgical options, I was devastated! He answered my questions without rushing me and made me feel more at ease. Although I was extremely nervous about the surgery initially, after I awoke from the surgery, I noticed that the pain down my arm was gone. A couple of weeks later, I began my physical therapy regimen. I am looking forward to getting back to my workout routine. I had a pretty frustrating experience with Dr. Vokshoor. I consulted with him three times about the severe neck pain and headaches I was experiencing. The first consultation he was very distracted by his telephone(texting etc.) talking about ketamine use on another patient, how I need to meditate more, and talking to his surgical assistant about the surgery they performed the day prior while looking at my MRI, and then he left saying "you are a very complicated case.". The experience was bizarre, and I definitely didn't feel like my neck or my symptoms were the focus of the appointment. The second consultation was similar with talk about meditation, lifestyle and an order to have X-rays. The third consultation was a short discussion about the X-rays, another short discussion about meditation but also said I should get a ganglion block injection. When I got home, I live several hours away, I asked if I could get another MRI, he agreed but said he thought it would be pointless. I had my MRI performed at an upright facility because I wanted to see if being upright would better reveal what was causing my neck pain, and then mailed the cd and report to his office. I later followed up to make certain it had been received. I was told that it was and that he would call me to discuss it. When Dr. Vokshoor did call to discuss the MRI with me, he told me that I "didn't need surgery and that my neck was fine.". Great! I thought! Who wants to get surgery?! Not I. Flash forward 9 months of severe headaches, and neck pain, and I go see a new neurologist who takes a look at my MRI and says "this is not good. You have a herniated disc making contact with your spinal cord.". What?? I leave that appointment entirely bewildered, contact the receptionist at Dr. Vokshoors office asking for his notes on my appointments and specifically Dr. Vokshoor's notes on my MRI to give to my PCP and my neuro. The receptionist was rather difficult, and sent me office notes, but no notes about the MRI. I call back, speak to the same receptionist, who was difficult again "I did send you the notes", but fortunately someone else got on the line. She started out telling me that Dr. Vokshoor said for me to get X-rays. "I know, and did. I would like his notes on the MRI".. Apparently, in order to get those I had to prove I did the X-rays. Which I did by emailing a copy of the report and referring to a prior email which stated they were received. Which I couldn't believe, because it should be in my records. She then said that he told you to get a ganglion block. Did you do that?? To which I told her "no, Dr. Cyril(pain specialist ) said that would not help me." I then explained to her again that I want his notes on the MRI. Apparently, there weren't any notes in my file, so I explained to her that my new neurologist said that my MRI was not fine and she wants his notes on my MRI. Then the nurse asked for all of my symptoms(my symptoms had not changed since him last) and told me he would call me back. When he did call me back he told me that he "didn't realize I had significant cord compression in my neck and that replacing that disc would be the solution". I was pretty shocked because 9 months prior he said I was fine based off the same MRI. What's going on?? I'm not sure, but did he even look at the MRI last time? How does one not realize? Thank goodness I went to a thorough neurologist about my neck pain and other symptoms. I'm sure Dr. Vokshoor is an excellent surgeon. His reputation is why I went to him in the first place, and kept going back. Too bad I had to pay out of pocket for high consultation fees, when I wasn't being taken seriously. Based upon my experience with him, he just isn't the surgeon for me. Sorry, Dr. Vokshoor. read more

I have had back problems and pain since 1979 when I injured my back. In 1980 I had 2 lumbar surgeries and have managed my chronic back pain ever since. Fast forward 30 years and I got degenerative spine disease. I had one more lumbar surgery by a doctor who did not ask the insurance for approval for a possible second part of the surgery in case I needed it. I did need it but he didn't do it since he had not gotten it pre approved, and wasn't sure he'd be paid for it, even though he was right there during part 1 of the surgery. When I woke up he said the good news is the surgery went well, but the bad news is that I need more. Yeah, the part he didn't do when he was in there. Later I asked the insurance and they said that they would have paid for the second part of the surgery. Thankfully I found Dr Vokshoor. He did the additional work that I needed, and as other things keep going wrong in my spine, he has deftly fixed every one. He has been very good at diagnosing each problem. Every surgery he has done has gone as smoothly as I can imagine, and some have been quite complicated. I can't recommend Dr Vokshoor highly enough. He has literally saved my life more than once, as I could not have continued on with the level of chronic pain I have been in before some of these surgeries. read more

I have found Dr. Vokshoor to be the very best, bar none. He is an excellent neurosurgeon and human being with top notch skills, knowledge, and ability as a surgeon with excellent doctor-patient skills. What I like most about him besides his great skill, is his empathy and compassion that he exudes for the whole of me, mind and body, and I am close to 70. If I could compare a Ferrari to a Trabant automobile (gave Communism a bad name--powered by a two-stroke pollution generator that maxed out at 18hp--a hollow really bad joke of a car, constructed of recycled worthlessness, reinforced with fibers like cotton and wood-an antique when designed in the 1950's--East Germany's answer to the VW Beetle--they rarely ran at all--lacked brake lights or turn signals and abandoned by the East Germans once over the border), Dr. Vokshoor is the Ferrari of neurosurgeons. I live in Newport Beach and in 2010 had an unsuccessful lumbar fusion at Hoag Hospital by a neurosurgeon. After my second post-op visit to this neurosurgeon, and I am having pain, he says good-by to me; he is finished with me he says. He is just the surgeon and doesn't do pain management. Then came the pain management doctors and routine epidurals for the pain, real pain that worsened and consumed my life. I was in bed in pain all the time. Six years later, an abundance of severe sciatic pain, and years of three epidurals yearly for unrelenting, around-the-clock horrific sciatic pain from butt to top of right foot and the epidurals no longer working, I found Dr. Vokshoor after a search from San Diego to Santa Monica. I perused through dozens of names on the internet, interviewing many personally, and finally with the recommendation of Dr. Monique, a personal friend, whose priest friend, Dr. Vokshoor had successfully operated on and with finding Dr. Robert Bray in Santa Monica who did not take my insurance but recommended Dr. Vokshoor who at the time worked with him. I interviewed him in Santa Monica, and went with him in 2016 for an extended lumbar fusion of L-5--S-1--a then fusion of my whole lumbar spine, begun by Newport neurosurgeon. Dr. V found my sciatic nerve completely intertwined with my spine in a very complicated and difficult surgery. After the first lumbar fusion experience, I had sworn off any further back surgery until nothing could stop the sciatic pain and was thus compelled to seek help. I had spent THREE weeks in the hospital at Hoag with my first surgery, and 4 days with Dr. Vokshoor (Hoag billed my insurance $300,000 for the hospital alone). The experiences were polar opposites. I writhed in pain at Hoag for days, eons, ignored much of the time in pain, flat on my back, moved around to different wards, then was released to a nursing home for rehab for a week which was a nightmare--room next door to a demented man who screamed all night and my own roommate wasn't much better but had non-stop visitors and tv. I experienced much pain in my recovery which seemed to take forever. I could barely move in that nursing home but had PT twice a day. June, 2016: Dr. Vokshoor at St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica. I awake to Dr. Vokshoor asking me if I am in pain. I say, "no" and he is so happy. He said that he was holding his breath for my answer. I couldn't believe that years and years of such horrible sciatic pain was gone. It was like water being turned off. I'm no longer a passenger in that Traubant Auto. Dr. Vokshoor ordered this fabulous ice machine to use at home called a Therma... that was so great. It was an ice machine unlike no other--one put this band on and it circulated ice cold water for half a day to my back, then needed more ice. It kept my back at probably 32 degrees night and day, and I felt no pain recovering-hardly any pain meds needed. It was a miracle. Dr. V even knows the best medical devices for recovery. Then I had an in-home Physical Therapist immediately who seemed to come almost daily. I had her for a month. I was feeling well but had a check up at one year in Santa Monica. We did have arranged phone conferences with the distance. Dr. V was always available to arrange time to talk to me via phone if pre-arranged. I had x-rays or MRI's at one year that showed my lumbar spine had not fused. I was clearly distressed with the finding. Dr. V then ordered me, and I received a major brace/belt, called an electrical bone growth stimulating device, the "Orthofix Spinal Stim"--ordered for me on 6-16-17-about 16 inches in the back and 10 inches in front, circling the all of me and quite uncomfortable, fitting tightly. (I was told that Medicare was charged $10,000 for this belt.) I wore it 4 hours a day for 9 mos. and my lumbar spine fused. Hallelujah. The belt would run for up to 365 days. Now it is two years later, Jan. 4, 2019, and I visit Dr. V. He tells me after x-rays and MRI's that my cervical spine is crescendoing down and is ready to go. What seemed would be a simple case turned into something much bigger and I'm so grateful it was Dr. Vokshoor who was and has been there to support me on the journey. Never before have I had a doctor meet me with so much care, compassion and hope for my wellbeing on not only a physical level of healing but emotionally as well. I've lived with chronic pain for 25 years, had over 20 operations and not one of my prior surgeons has taken the time to consider the pain I'm in emotionally and how that emotional pain is only increasing the severity of my day to day pain.
