[[HIGHLIGHT]]What a cool vibe and interesting concept that's really close to the university.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The cafe is great and they also have some pretty good food options. [[HIGHLIGHT]]However I think the best quality about this place is they allow people to hangout and do whatever.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There are plenty of things to do here if you forget to bring your laptop. They got plenty of books, and there's lots of seating inside and outside of the cafe[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. It's old school and there's nothing fake or corporate a out this place at all. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I stayed for a good two hours and just got lost in my coding.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Both the customers and employees here are great!

I absolutely love " Sankofa Video Books & Cafe and one of my favorite DC staples . I include this experience in my hair appointment time either before or after . I order the breakfast salmon melt with a " sweet tang" smoothie with spinach . I take my time and walk around the book store to select a book to add to my meal . I'll eat and enjoy a good read . [[HIGHLIGHT]]I've always enjoyed the hospitality and love the " woke" environment .[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] In addition, Sankofa holds an event space that encourages the community to live out their purpose through book signings, open mic poetry, speakers, mental health forums, or anything positive towards the culture of people . I've been going to this place since my move to DC in 2015. My type of vibe !!!

This is such an amazingly curated place to be in! You get a cafe with themed food, culturally specific pastries, and a good standard beverage selection. Everything we ate was so filling, flavorful, and it was a great deal (so important now that cafe prices have skyrocketed). [[HIGHLIGHT]]And with free WiFi, you can get homework done![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There's a lot of available outlets and afford pricing which makes it student friendly, which is great since it's near Howard University.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]On top of that, you get to witness so much Black culture and history, I left feeling so inspired and learned, leaving that my mind is more nurtured.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Me and my friend felt so comfortable in the way we were able to lean back (with much ample seating), have a nice conversation in such an open and community-oriented environment.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There is a great selection of critical literature and everything inbetween like apparel, local film, and jewelry.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I hear they have a great public program series that lets you become more educated and engage in critical thought related to African descent.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It really stands apart as a cafe from its film-maker origins so of course the selection and fine details make it feel that much more personal and genuine.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Come and support! support! support!

Obsessed with Sankofa. I grew up right across the street my whole life and never knew of this gem. Everyone who works there was so warm, informative, interesting, intelligent and kind. The book selection was one of a kind and diverse. Stuff you can't find at Barnes and Noble. Stop getting your books off Amazon and come here. They even order books for you if you can't find it or want a hardcover.

This black owned business is not only a staple of the DC community, but is what most bookstores wish they actually were. Located near Howard University, this is the place to go to find not just African American literature, but genuine items straight from Africa. There is also a great cafe in the bookstore where you can get an assortment of things. After getting my book, I ordered scrambled eggs w/toast, and an iced mocha. I was surprised at the eggs, they were very gourmet looking and tasted great. Cant recommend this place enough due to its chill vibe, and great customer service.

Beautifully organized, colorful, and decorated space offering a wide variety of books, local gifts, and artisan goods + crafts. I bought "Homegoing" by Yaa Gyasi thanks to the thoughtful "staff pick" recommendations they have on little notecards for various reads around the store. They even have a dedicated children's area with a little play space for kiddos, and a cafe serving up baked goods and beverages for purchase. Highly recommend visiting this local neighborhood gem.

On a Thursday evening it was very easy for me to find parking right up front and pay the meter for an hour. The event started on time and we were able to do a Q&A with the authors (who are now NY best sellers, woot woot). After the Q&A we all stood in line to get our books signed. Everything was well organized so the line went by quickly. Kristely at the front desk was super helpful and also helped me out with a glass of wine. This will definitely be my new hangout spot to come and enjoy a drink while I indulge in a new book or two. Thank you so much Solid State for a memorable experience.

We both love to read and love bookshops. I love big bookshops, little bookshops, romance bookshops... Lost City Books was a wonderful surprise and immediately became one of my favorite bookshops in DC. Why? It isn't huge, but it makes such good use of its space that I found it to be one of the best stocked independent bookstores I've visited in a long while. I always try to support local independent bookstores when I can, and some of them are tiny (if your neighborhood bookstore is one of the tiny ones, remember they'll probably place orders for you if you want/need something they don't have in stock). But - at the risk of sounding silly - we got lost in time at Lost City Books. We meant to just pop in and quickly pick something to take home. But we wandered through their fiction section and staff picks, pointing out books to each other we loved or have been meaning to read and all of a sudden a half hour had passed and we only really explored one tiny section of the shop. We walked out with four books between us, too. The customer service was friendly to boot. Just a great independent bookshop and another reason to love Adams Morgan.

On top of that, they're a true community bookstore, giving back by providing free meals to people in need, which I find really admirable. My go-to order is usually an iced coffee (or hot, depending on the day), but I've also had their biscuit with egg, cheese, and bacon a few times. That biscuit is perfectly fluffy, the egg is creamy, and the bacon is on point--so good that I've thought about ordering a side of bacon just to have more. If you're in the area and need a cozy spot to work, this is it. I love that they have plenty of outlets (a rarity!) and even window seating. Great coffee, great food, and a mission worth supporting.
