After living in Adams Morgan for 10 years, I feel lucky to have this spot just a short walk away. It's the perfect co-working space--I love being surrounded by shelves of books, even if I've never bought one, because the atmosphere is so welcoming. On top of that, they're a true community bookstore, giving back by providing free meals to people in need, which I find really admirable. My go-to order is usually an iced coffee (or hot, depending on the day), but I've also had their biscuit with egg, cheese, and bacon a few times. That biscuit is perfectly fluffy, the egg is creamy, and the bacon is on point--so good that I've thought about ordering a side of bacon just to have more. If you're in the area and need a cozy spot to work, this is it. I love that they have plenty of outlets (a rarity!) and even window seating. The ambience is very quaint and welcoming. But I was disappointed in my chai latte. It was very watery and without much flavor. However, the chocolate chip cookies were delicious. They offered to warm them up in the oven, which we greatly accepted. A heads up, their kitchen closes around 2 PM at least on Sundays, and they often sell out of items before that, so we snagged the last two food items (cookies) at 3:15pm. Very cute shop! Nice books, seating, and was quiet on a Thursday morning. Tried their breakfast sandwich and cappuccino. The espresso was a tad weak but otherwise it was standard. The sandwich was nice and flaky on the biscuit and was filled generously. I do think it's a tad pricey for the size but it was tasty, well packaged to take on the go (though I ate it in store) and definitely prepared fresh given the time it took and the warmth. Came on a Sunday right after opening and it was nice and warm (in a chilly day) a few people here which made for a really nice breakfast where I could read some books and drink tea. No downsides to this great shop. This place is super cute and hip. I love the books all around the area. To me the book choices weren't very interesting. I did find a really cute cookbook, but not a lot of books that are out on the shelves. So if you are looking for a book that is not very popular, definitely a good spot for you! I love the way that they serve their food instead of giving you a number they give you a person with some facts on the back. The service is really great they'll help you pick out something. That's just right for you! The only reason why I didn't give them five stars is because I don't think they have the best coffee, very water down very weak super sugary. Adam's Morgan is a prime neighborhood for hanging out which is why even though I live in NoMa, I prefer taking "bus 90" and get some work done here at Potter's House. Easily accessible! 10/10 customer service. Special thanks to Kenneth who allowed me to borrow his personal iPhone battery charger. Employees are friendly and professional at the same time. 4/10 for working hours. Today on Wednesday they closed their doors at 2:30p which is slightly early in my opinion. I believe extending their working hours could attract more customers for them. A fact that may and may not convince the business owner to altering working hours: when I left the coffee shop at 2:30p today on Wednesday, there were 5 tables occupied by customers which means there was still a demand. Other than working hours, this shop is great! Overall, good location, good customer service, but there is a little room for improvement with the time they close. I went there on a recent vacation. Their breakfast sandwich is amazing and it rivals the one at Elle. (At Elle I had it without meat - at Potter's I had the egg-and-cheddar with turkey sausage) I also enjoyed sitting in there and of course browsing the book selections. Their staff seems nice too. Terrible, un-welcoming visit. No restroom for customers. I'm very sorry to take down my 5 star rating today. I used to frequent this amazing coffee establishment years ago when they had very friendly and diverse staff. This morning I was very excited to revisit Potter's House on a gloomy day for some much needed coffee and a pastry. I walked right up to the counter in a very cheerful mood, happy to contribute to an establishment that I used to believe in. I had not been here in over two years and I was glad to be back. Wearing my mask, I greeted the people in front of me with my usual cheerful "Hi! How are you doing?" The people said nothing, but just sat there staring at me. The expressions on their faces conveyed a message more like "Why are you in our establishment?" although of course they did not say those words. At that point I decided not to order coffee but I still wanted a pastry. The pastry box had "blueberry scones" written directly in front of a row of pastries and for that reason I thought that was exactly what they were. When I asked for one the woman responded with a very condescending "We don't have any. That's why you see they're all gone." Seriously, who talks to customers like this? I pointed to something that looked like a croissant and said "Can I have this pastry please?" She answered with "That's an apple tart." .......(awkward silence because I'm still waiting for her to serve ot to me and ring it up etc).... "is that what you want?" she continued. Participating on their game, I just repeated the question "Can I have this pastry please?" and then I got it and paid the $3.85. I motioned toward the restroom (remembering where it is from my prior visits) and another employee informed me that the restrooms are closed. We the customers can no longer sit inside nor can we use the restroom. It is their right to have that policy, of course, just as Starbucks has the right to allow restroom use to customers only. I understood, however a sign should have been placed at the door or at the counter, letting customers know beforehand that restrooms are not available. I would like to come back, give this place another chance and enjoy their coffee and food. I will first wait until they change their staff entirely. For now this place is very un-welcoming and I will take my business elsewhere. read more

I started going to Potter's House about 6 years ago because they had a women's open mic every month and my best friend and I would go. It was the best! Unfortunately, they no longer do it but it was a beautiful community filled with awesome people wanting to encourage and inspire others. I've been back a handful of times since to browse their collection and/or to get a pastry and I love it. Their collection, despite being pretty small, is filled with the types of books I love to read- diverse and thoughtful. This is such a gem of the Adams Morgan neighborhood. This spot functions as a cafe, a bookstore, and a flexible community space that hosts local events. First, the cafe: great coffee and food menu, with plenty of seating for the size of the space. Also generous vegan and vegetarian options -- I would recommend the biscuits and gravy in particular, but I've liked everything I've had there. The vegan breakfast bowl is also delicious. The bookstore is also lovely, with a focus on art and social justice issues. They always have some buzzy bestsellers stocked, but some more niche finds too. Great for browsing or finding a gift. Potter's House is more than just a coffee house. The house is also involved in nonprofit works, civil rights efforts, and artist empowerment. I love to come here anytime I'm in Adams Morgan to read a book, write, talk, etc. It's an amazing place to just be and mind your own business or make a friend. They have tables for talking, tables for working, and tables where screens are not allowed. Also important, their coffee and food is incredible. I always get the ice mocha and it's absolutely delicious. They serve it in a mason jar if you're hanging out, which is a nice touch and ties in the rustic vibe. I LOVE the gluten free muffins. They have a sweet potato chocolate chip one that is to die for. It's so sweet and moist and perfect. Buy it. I have so much to say about the feel of this place, but it's something you need to just experience. Go. Get a coffee. Get a snack. Buy a book. Explore. Charming browsing bookstore with an embedded cafe. I say "browsing bookstore" because it's small but very well-curated - I found something I was interested in reading on every shelf, but not many titles I recognized. It's the kind of place where you go in to find a gift or next read, but not necessarily to grab the whatever your book club picked last week. As far as the coffee shop goes, it was fine but not exciting. The breakfast sandwich was good but a little oversalted, the iced chai just a little sweet. But I think the atmosphere makes up for these flaws - it's got the books inside and a lovely patio outside where you can sit and chat. Reminds me of one of my favorite coffee shops in Boston. It is a bookstore, coffee shop, and café. There are surprisingly many outlets. A few tables are reserved for those without laptops, but I did see some people breaking the rules. Gender-neutral bathrooms are present even though Yelp didn't even ask me. I had the squash bread which was moist and soft and has inspired me to begin a career in the bakery arts. I also ate a beet and arugula salad that was a little too light, but had some enjoyable goat cheese. This is a destination for many types of people. I easily found a spot and sat next to a graduate teaching assistant, a philosophy tutor, and recent immigrants from Colombia and Sweden. A non-profit that is integrated into and works as part of the community, Potter's House feels like "my" space. The food and coffee menu is simple but wholesome. The staff are friendly, and the bookstore offers a great selection, including some amazing children books, which I've purchased as gifts for family members and the children of friends.
