Chicken Breast Plate x Salad x Miso Soup.
Carl N.

SanSai Japanese Grill is a casual counter-serve chain for health-minded Asian fare from sushi roll to salads to chicken breast. This location is at Lake ave in Pasadena. Its interior decor and atmosphere were modest and relaxing, respectively. Their menu items were vast. I ordered their Chicken Breast Plate x salad and soup. It has satisfying flavor and tender breast; I dig it. Service was fast. Prices were fair and competitive. Overall, I enjoyed their food and service. Perfect for a quick meal. I recommend you visit.

We've been dining at this SanSai for well over 10 years. We used to work in Pasadena, and it was one of our favorite places, but had not been here for at least a couple of years. Happy to report that the food is as good as we remembered it to be! My favorite is the salmon bowl---delicious grilled teriyaki salmon with steamed white rice. I always get the Sumi Salad, which is so flavorful and refreshing: Shredded green and purple cabbage, julienne carrots, green onions, roasted almonds and sesame seeds tossed with rice vinaigrette dressing and garnished with crunchy noodles. This was as good as ever. JJ;s absolute favorite is tempura, and he always gets the Tempura Plate. Tempura with steamed white rice. It comes with two side salads, Instead of the one salad, he gets the miso soup with the Sumi Salad. He said that the quality of the tempura plate was as good as he remembered it to be. Service is top notch---A plus! Several of the staff have been there for over 10 years, and they were happy to see us. Especially JJ, who always loves to engage with the staff. They are super friendly and service continues to be as great as ever---superb. The interior is spacious, bright and cheery, with plenty of seating. You order your food at the counter and pay. Then they call you when your order is ready---it seems like now they bring it to your table. Parking is plentiful---there is a huge parking lot adjacent to the restaurant. It was fun dining there again after such a long time, and seeing friendly and familiar faces. Such a nice experience! Highly recommended.

Stopped by while in Pasadena and it ended up being a solid, easy meal. Nothing fancy, just straightforward Japanese comfort food that does the job. Service was quick and the dining room was clean and relaxed. We ordered the shrimp & steak plate, yakisoba noodles with chicken, sushi special box, tiger roll, and shrimp & veggie tempura. The yakisoba with chicken was definitely my favorite -- good portion, well seasoned, and filling without being too heavy. The sushi was surprisingly solid for a casual spot, and the veggie skewers that came with the shrimp and steak plate stood out more than I expected. Portions were generous and prices felt fair for the area. There's also a small Japanese snack section inside, which is a nice bonus while you're waiting. Overall, a reliable place for a quick, satisfying lunch or low-key dinner if you're in Pasadena.

We needed a quick take out lunch for heading back to the hotel. So we stumbled here because of the large sign that said SanSai Japanese Grill while driving. Ordered: Spicy Tuna Roll Tiger Roll Steak Plate The food was not bad, just pretty average sushi. A typical mall japanese food, cheap and affordable.

The staff was so nice to us! The steak plate was yummy! If you want a yummy salad, this is the place! Very nice area! Very cute

Not gonna lie, I'm a cheap date. Bring me here and I'll be one happy clam! I've been eating at various SanSai restaurants since I was a wee little schoolgirl. The quality has not changed and it's just as delicious as I remember! Their salads are my favorite part because they make me feel at least a little healthy while I scarf down rolls of sushi, terriyaki and rice Two plates which included 6 pieces of sushi, 2 salads, terriyaki chicken and rice only set me back about $30! That's a great deal if you ask me, and a much needed break from other unhealthy take out options.

Got salmon roll, salmon bowl and chicken bowl. both bowls came with small side salad. The sumi salad was pretty good. The salmon plate was decent and good sauce. The salmon roll was also good. Overall decent fast type Asian style food.

for this being a fast food sushi restaurant i felt it was pretty good. prices are very reasonable for the quality of fish you get but if you're looking for high quality sushi then go somewhere else. this is perfect for a quick grab and go. the service was fast, workers were nice and overall it was pretty clean. would come back again!

Consistent quality, fast streamlined service and delicious hand rolls! Whenever we're thinking of going out for dinner, KazuNori is at the top of the list. We go so often! If they had a membership, we would easily be top tier members! We also love bringing people for the first time and sharing one of our favorite spots. Don't ever change, KazuNori!

My friend and I came to KazuNori for Saturday lunch right when they opened at 11:30. Only one other group was there at opening, but it gradually got busier over the course of lunch. As is standard for handroll places, seating is all counter seating so that you can watch the chefs make and place each piece in front of you. I don't recommend coming here with more than 2 others, as conversation can be difficult due to the seating arrangement. I went with the 6 hand roll set for $29, which offers toro, yellowtail, salmon, bay scallop, crab, and lobster. Everything was good, and my favorites were the scallop, crab, and lobster. You can ask for less rice in each roll if you aren't super hungry or have a smaller stomach. They make everything easy when it comes to paying the bill by charging an automatic 16% fee, so you don't need to fill in the tip. I think that's fair given that each handroll is personally made for you by the chef.

I've been wanting to try Tendon Tempura Carlos Jr. for a while since their original location is in Torrance. I'm really glad they opened a Pasadena location because we're lucky to have one here in the 626 now. Parking was easy since there are spots right in front of the restaurant, but they are metered and cost $2 per hour. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the staff. Since the weather was nice, we decided to sit out on the patio, which was cool and comfortable. To start, we ordered the fried tempura mozzarella sticks ($5.99), onion kakiage ($2.99), and edamame corn kakiage ($5.99). Everything was delicious, but the mozzarella sticks were the clear favorite. They were fried perfectly with an amazing cheese pull and plenty of cheesy flavor. We decided to share all of our entrees family style. For my son, we ordered the plain hot udon, which was simple and perfect for him. For the rest of us, we ordered the Premium Tempura Bowl ($32.97) and added ikura ($4.98), the cold soba with dipping sauce and tempura ($19.99), and Carlos's Jewel Box ($31.99), which came with chopped salmon, toro, yellowtail, and popcorn shrimp over rice. We also added extra toro for $8. On top of that, we ordered a side of five slices of chu-toro for $15.49, which honestly felt like a great deal. The Premium Tempura Bowl was definitely the star of the meal. Every piece of tempura was light, crispy, and fried perfectly without feeling greasy. The fried tempura egg was absolutely chef's kiss, especially once the yolk mixed into the rice. The tempura dipping sauce was also excellent and brought everything together. The Carlos's Jewel Box was another standout. The fish tasted fresh, and the rice with their house sauce paired perfectly with everything. The added toro made it even better. The cold soba was well prepared, but it just wasn't our cup of tea. That's more of a personal preference than anything because the quality was still there. The restaurant has a modern look while still feeling like a cozy mom-and-pop shop. I really liked the decor and the welcoming atmosphere. Since we were the only table sitting outside, I can't really comment on the noise level inside, but the patio was peaceful and relaxing. The service was great. The staff brought out a booster seat for my son and even helped secure it to the patio chair. They also brought us all the condiments, including ginger and pickled vegetables, without us having to ask, which I appreciated. Overall, I would definitely come back. The tempura was some of the best I've had in the 626, and the rice bowls were just as impressive. If you're visiting for the first time, I highly recommend ordering one of the tempura bowls. You really can't go wrong. It's great to see a restaurant that started in Torrance expand to Pasadena because it's a welcome addition to the 626 dining scene.

Crispy shrimp with flavorful sauce. They also included an egg and I just love how the gooey egg yolk mixed with the tempura sauce and rice. Such a perfect bite. The ikura definitely added to the texture and flavor too. Yellowtail roll was good, love the crunchy toppings and the sausage. The sweet beef udon was the most average of all the dishes. Flavor was a little too bland/ mild which perhaps could have used a little bit of more spice. Overall, will return again for the tempura!

There was a line when I arrived but the wait wasn't too long. The place was packed but people receive and eat their food pretty quickly. The Lychee Lemonade is smooth and sweet with the drink leaning more lychee than lemonade but I really enjoyed it. It had two pieces of lychee inside the cup. The onigiris were a great size and had a decent amount of filling. The rice is dusted with a sesame seed salt and seaweed seasoning so every bite has flavor. The sashimi portion is small but the pieces are of quality and the dipping sauce is great.I ate inside and the tray presentation was a nice touch with a disposable soy sauce tray provided and a small cup of wasabi. Barely any yuzu flavor, which was disappointing. Salmon needs to be salted a bit more. The nori wasn't crispy, however, it wasn't oily. Onigiri was mild in flavor overall. This was decent, but it wasn't addicting. Onigiri was a good size. If you're hungry, ordering two to three onigiris would suffice. BEEF SUKIYAKI ONIGIRI This did taste like beef sukiyaki. Could taste the sauteed onions too. But this also needed more flavor, more salt. The nori wasn't crispy, however, it wasn't oily. I enjoyed this more than the Salmon Yuzu. BAKED LOBSTER SHRIMP HANDROLL Ordered the wrong one. I thought this would be spicy. But they later told me they only have baked, not spicy for the lobster shrimp handroll. Only the onigiri is spicy and there's a spicy tuna for the handroll too. The handroll was underseasoned and it was just plain baked lobster and shrimp with rice. If you eat it with soy sauce and wasabi it might help a bit, but still so disappointed that no one told me this was not a spicy handroll! LYCHEE LEMONADE This was a bit sweet, but it tasted like lychee and lemonade. A good balance. It had real lychee in it too, which I appreciate. This was good! AMBIANCE + SEATS & TABLES The ambiance was very casual. As soon as you enter, you see the wooden and metal tables and chairs. Small tables for 2, table for 4, a bar seat table in the center and in the back. More smaller tables than large. It was comfortable to sit in. Tables are close together. Two unisex bathrooms toward the entrance. Bathroom was clean. CUSTOMER SERVICE It was good. Person taking my order was nice. But he did not do a good job at explaining everything when I asked about the hand roll I was ordering. I guess misunderstandings can happen. Overall, it was an underwhelming experience at Rice & Nori. Not sure if I would return. Have had better onigiris at Japanese supermarkets.

We ordered the spicy edamame to hold us over til the main dishes arrived. It was delicious, with a mild heat and lots of garlic. We also had the cheese katsu curry and menchi katsu curry. The katsus are worth the 20 min wait. The cheese katsu was oozing with thick melted cheese and gave some very satisfying cheese pulls with every bite. The menchi katsu was a generous size and was perfectly crisp. Both orders were cooked perfectly and not oily. The curry had a steady mild heat and a slightly sweet undertone, but it was missing whatever provides that umami flavor I love in Japanese curry. Maybe it needed some garlic? I'm not sure. I'm still pining for the curry from Curry House in little Tokyo, which was suddenly bought out and shut down a while ago. Nonetheless, we had a pleasant experience at Katsu Jin. I came back for the chicken katsu curry. I got take out. It was piping hot and delicious when I got home 20 min later. Highly recommend this dish! The katsu is perfect. The miso ramen had a very strong white miso flavor. Didn't hate it, as I do love miso, but it was a little too much miso for my liking. Typical curly ramen and it was cooked well. Loved the jammy egg too. It was a soy marinated egg. There were also three pieces of chashu too! It was good, but slightly overcooked. The portion of the ramen was medium sized and was surprised they didn't bring a smaller size since it was a set meal. But happy they were generous! Stumbled in on a Wednesday in the early evening, and had plenty of open seating to choose from…read more Immediately, I was cheerfully greeted and seated by one the servers, and then given two menus--a traditional folding menu with a padded backing I can really only describe as "satisfyingly textured," and a beautiful 3x8 wooden slab engraved with a QR code for the picture menu. I had planned to be phone-free for the hour, but curiosity bested me and I whipped out my phone for a scan. The bulgogi with rice and miso called to me, strangely, considering the heat outside. The atmosphere at this slow hour was so nice I almost wished it was raining. A few Clairo and The Marías songs later (at the perfect volume--audible, but still low enough to have a quiet chat) my miso soup arrived. Now, it's been a good few years since I've had miso soup, and I've never really been crazy about it, but this... this was some damn good soup. Liquid umami. Then the bulgogi and rice came. This is the best bulgogi I've ever had. So tender. Quite literally melted in my mouth. Punches of savory juice, tender fatty bits, golden brown perfectly caramelized onions, and a sweetness to bring it all together. Every bite was perfect. It washed over me and my shoulders and spine practically uncoiled themselves. I want to try more from the menu but... I'm... I'm going to need this again. Like tomorrow. I should say, especially for the price, this is a lot o' grub. A perfect filling portion, especially with the rice and soup. I had a smoothie a couple hours earlier so I really should've asked for a to-go box 80% of the way through... but I was just having too much fun stuffing my face to stop. To recap--lovely service, great music, and food to live for. And a restroom. It's not public, but they do have a restroom. Thank god for that restroom. I was hungry, yes, but more than anything I really needed that restroom.
