Savory spice shop is always a blast to go into!! I do miss the days of being able to taste things, but fully understand during these times. When we walked in we were immediately met with a table and a sign asking us to use either hand sanitizer or wear some provided gloves. What a thought, and alternative to sanitizer!! Since we knew what we needed it was a quick in and out with the largest bag of taco seasoning for the house and a small 1 oz bag of ghost salt for the boys at work who like stuff. My only complaint is the parking situation, it's near the plaza in Santa Fe and I usually drive a dually pickup with a trailer. We were in the family car and were lucky enough to find a parking spot just around the corner!! We'll be back!! read more

We bought the taco soup mix and added 1 cup organic chicken and a couple extra goodies. We used 2cups chicken broth, 1 cup chopped chile and 1 sweet onion. I also added another 4 cups broth after an hour to let the chicken get more tender. After two hours of simmering we had the most amazing soup on the planet!!! I forgot to head to grab my super spicy hot sauce from my fridge at home and needed it for work...but luckily this place was nearby and had exactly what I wanted! Kate helped me once before to find some Green and Red Chile powder to give my Dad as a gift for his birthday...the perfect thing from New Mexico! However, this last visit required The Reaper Sauce that she educated me on...its spicier than the ghost chile sauce I have in my fridge...and I absolutely LOVE it! I can't dare say that I'd eat it alone, but just a drop or two in my pasta sauces or other creations is the perfect heat for me. Well, not exactly local I guess since it is a chain but they do grind and blend the spices on property. I am a sucker for these types of shops and always end up buying a ridiculous amount of spices even though I really don't cook that much. Some of the more usual items that I have not seen before in other similar stores are: - Himalayan pink Salt bricks. Basically huge blocks of salt. You can break of chucks and put them in your salt grinder or just smash them up to use. Apparently it stays fresher and more flavorful in brick form. - BBQ sauce and marinade kits. I love this idea. They come with everything you need to make the sauce inside. Spice blend, tamarind extract, molasses, whatever. Of course, it's probably much cheaper to just steal the recipe and buy the stuff on your own at the grocery store but where's the fun in that? - Ghost pepper salt. Ok, we've all heard of Ghost Peppers, the hottest chili on the planet. But have you ever seen it in powdered form? They have "tester" bottles of almost all their powdered spices which they encourage you to shake into your hand and then lick to taste test. When she saw me sprinkling this one she rushed over to warn me how hot it was. Boy was she right! It is insanely hot!! Think about the spiciest thing that you ever ate. Now let me tell you just one pinch of this stuff is just as hot as that!!!! - Freeze dried corn. Not at all what it sounds like. It is so crunchy, crispy and sweet. Yet its just plain corn. It's kind of hard to explain. Samples were up by the register and I didn't try it until I had already paid. My last thought leaving Santa Fe was, "man, I should have gotten some of that corn." They do have a site you can order refills and stuff online. But it's much more fun to stop by the store. Everyone was super friendly and I loved getting to sample everything. Very fun! read more

I've been buying spices from the Boulder, CO and Austin, TX stores when I have traveled and quickly became my favorite spice shop. I have over 40 bottles of spices from this place and I am always finding new things to get. I was ecstatic they opened a store in Santa Fe. The owner informed me that she ships to ABQ for free!! The spices are SO MUCH fresher and cheaper compared to the supermarket brands. They have amazing spice blends and a large selection of salt free blends as well. One of my favorite items is the Madagascar 2 x vanilla extract which is available in larger bottles if you are a baker like I am. 5 stars for sure! When I first entered the palace of gusto, I was greeted with a fragrant aroma of what could only be the spices of the distant East Indies Arabia, or perhaps Atlantis. I was immediately greeted by a woman who can only be described as the queen of spice. Her first sentence was "hello, you can taste all my spices, and throw what remains on the ground; as it keeps up the delicious smell". I was baffled by the sheer number of exotic zests and seasonings. Goods so inexpensive, it blew my freaking mind. TRUFFLE SALT WITH REALL TRUFFLES!! I've been buying spices from this company online for many years and this was the first time I actually went into one of their retail stores. Very friendly and they had everything in stock I needed. You can sample stuff if you want, though I'm already super familiar with their entire inventory. I cannot recommend their spices more. They are always fresh and high quality. They stay potent for years and don't mold. A lot of their spice blends are salt and sugar free, and so many of them are awesome and very useful. There are only one or two other spice companies I buy from because these spices are so high quality and trustworthy. read more

I called looking for Ras al Hanout (Queen of the Kitchen), a Moroccan spice mixture used in Tagines, and was completely thrilled to learn that they had three different mixtures: a traditional, a smokey Cumin-ish (called Tan-Tan), and a cinnamon-ish "Marrakesh" that would light up any cooked, fruit-based dish. They have a dry "Harrisa" mix that can be constituted with water and olive oil; nice, since wet Harrisa has ap limited shelf life. And, they have Pomegranate Molasses, much thicker and less sweet than Grenadine Syrup (originally a pomegranate syrup, only Bols still is) - think a Tequila Sunrise, or a chicken glaze of PM and lemon juice, cinnamon & sugar. This store must be supported. It is unique and indispensable to the culinary community. read more

Their selection is second to none, and they have a terrific, well informed staff who are happy to share their preferences and ideas with so many of the fresh and tasty products in the store. I've always been happy with my purchases, and know that I am buying fresh high-quality herbs and spices. There are plenty of mixes if you're looking for some easy add-ons to a dish, as well as exotic and hard to find ingredients. They feature a nice selection of local hot sauces and honeys, and you are encouraged to sniff and taste just about everything you see. Their website boasts quite a collection of recipe ideas for use with their ingredients, and some are even available in the store. This is one of the best spice stores I've ever been to in the world! I'm comparing Savory to some of the best stores in Paris and Budapest along with the spice markets in Istanbul and Israel. Anything you can think of they have. Whether it's something as simple as salt or a custom spice blend or even incredible Saffron they have it! Also they hold weekly cooking classes for around $20/person but they fill up super fast where you create dinner to eat right there. I haven't been yet as it's been fully booked but from what I've seen it always seems like everyone is having tons of fun. Its owners, Kate and Drew, are warm, welcoming and knowledgable about their inventory, most of which can be sampled. Although it's fun ro shop in the store, the website is full of information. Parking is sometimes difficult, but I recently learned that it's possible to email or phone an order and Kate or Drew will deliver it to you at the curb. Highly recommended. read more

We have been shopping at another store of this kind located very close, for several years. Learning that there is another store, we went to see and compare. The store is attractively appointed, the selection is very nice. This was on Wednesday, 8/13. The lady working there, either didn't like her job, didn't like to have customers in the store, or had a very bad day personally. She didn't offer any comments, information, not even a smile. When we decided to check out, she said: "Is that all?"...meaning what? you are not going to buy more, or are you finally getting out... We paid our $38.00 and said "thank you"...she did not respond. After getting home we found this advertising card, stating that you receive a "free 2 fl. oz. bottle of blend with your purchase". We received just the card. Between this store and the other one around the corner, we spent close to $200 on oils, salts and other spices. Obviously, we weren't looking for freebies, but after such an inhospitable treatment the least the lady could have done is to follow what her promotion is promising. read more
