Wow! Why have I not had this sooner? Every time I come to Mason I eat at my friend's house. I watched the episode of the Texas Daytipper on Mason and I have been waiting to try Santos Taqueria y Cantina. So glad I did!!! They have Durango style Mexican food. I ordered the barbacoa gordita plate. It comes with two flour gorditas (they have corn too but may take longer to prepare), rice and beans. They have three salsas on the condiment table. The green salsa was my favorite. The barbacoa gordita was so good! They stuffed a tortilla full of barbacoa. They weren't shy about the portion of meat and I am glad they didn't. So good and so filling! This is not the typical restaurant where you sit down at a table and get chips and salsa served. Here you walk in, order your food and drinks at the counter (you can bring in drinks from the wine place next door) and wait for your food to come out. This makes it efficient for them and I don't blame them. I would do the same. This place gets so packed and busy! They had a long wait yesterday (Saturday night) so I am glad I came right when they opened on Sunday. The food is so good. The people here are so warm and welcoming. The place is cute. You can eat inside or out. You have to order at the counter, and they bring your food to you. I asked what was recommended. The lady said the gorditas or the nachos. I opted for the ground beef nachos. The queso was good and the chips were extra crispy, which I loved! However the rest of the nachos were pretty bland. They didn't serve with any salsa. They also had specials, which I didn't see until after I ordered because they were written on a chalk board to the left of the register. It's kind of like an upscale fast food restaurant. Throw away your own plates and trash when done. read more

Our first visit after years of wanting to stop in and dine. We arrived at 11am on a Sunday. Welcomed by a very friendly and busy staff. Ordered and pre-paid at counter. Staff delivered our food choices quickly and efficiently. Delicious food all the way around. Very comfortable inside and outside seating options. This place has good soul! The best gorditas around. They are always amazing! The wine-a-Rita's are strong and extremely nice on a hot day. The staff is always extremely friendly as well. Scott and Manny have an amazing restaurant that you have to try. Also don't forget to stop next door at the wine tasting shop! read more

If this was your last day on earth and you wanted Mexican food then you need to come here. Between the queso, fresh chips, and barbacoa gordita plate I could probably eat here everyday for the rest of my life. Don't like gorditas? No problem, their chalupas and quesadillas with knock your socks off. Throw on some of their ridiculously delicious salsas and you're in for the chalupa designed by the hands of god. Oh, and did I mention their nachos? Because they deserve to have ballads written about them. I'm talking cheesy, meaty, explosions of crunch and flavor that might just make your face melt off. But don't worry, you can cool yourself down with one of their wonderful frozen drinks. No matter how you cut it, you need to eat here. Just make sure to call because they do have weird hours. Last I checked they were opened Thursday through Saturday, 11-9pm and Sunday 11-2. read more

Just left this place... If you want real good Mexican Food DON'T STOP HERE!!! The rice had some kind of funky taste, the tea tasted old like the container hasn't been cleaned, you have to order when you walk in and they don't even give you chips and hot sauce, unless you pay extra! And not to mention their over price menu! Two plates (the size of children plates at most restraunts) 1 soda and 1 water for the price of over $31.00... To bad Mason doesn't have Taco Bell, at least yal could enjoy better Mexican Food *and I have to give it a rating for it to post, I wish they had a negative start rating read more

Just marvelous, homemade food. Love the squash gorditas, which I've never found anywhere else. Must be a mamacita special. Her hand is in everything there, I think. We don't live in Mason, but often make the trip there just for lunch at Santos and have never been disappointed. read more

If you are looking for fresh, homemade style tex-mex, it doesn't get any better than Santos. Their menu is unique but simple. Don't expect a traditional tex-mex or taqueria style menu. Their focus is on gorditas, which are the best I have had anywhere. My favorite is the shrimp. Their Doble Taco, which is like a double decker style taco, is also excellent. If you don't believe me, then google the place and try to find a bad review, or check out the Texas Monthly article naming Santos as one of the Hill Country's 25 best places. read more

My husband had the crispy tacos and thought they were great! I had soft taco, it was ok, it was pretty dry. The chips were awesome! The queso was good, but no heat to it at all. It was quite over priced though, not what you would expect from a small, order at the counter Mexican restaurant. read more

This place is SO good!! Tried them as a result of watching The Daytripper (same reason we were in town to begin with). Portions are huge and delicious. You have to pay for chips and salsa, which we thought was weird considering the prices, but the employees are so friendly and helpful to newcomers that you don't mind. :) Oh; we had the gordita platter with one brisket and one barbacoa gordita. Both were delicious, but we each had our favorite (barbacoa for me). The chicken quesadilla (minus the zucchini, which we omitted because I hate it) was also delicious. Both platters were each enough for two people...or at least the two of us. We were so full we could barely walk out the door! Note: We also had the chips and salsa. Everything I've had here is really good. Wine bar next door is a must as well - go for the frozen "winearita" swirl. Small town prices - and homemade/authentic. My family has been coming to Santos for the last few years anytime we headed to Fredericksburg or Austin. The last two times we were there were not good experiences. I don't know who the guy with the pony tail is but he's is a negative influence on what until recently had been a great place to stop and eat. He is curt, condescending and down right rude. We had a party of five eating onsite and had ordered another two plates to go. When our plates (staggered, not together) were brought to us outside at the picnic tables we were chided for having too much hot sauce. Really? We had seven plates of food which cost $100 plus the tip and we were scolded for getting the amount of hot sauce we desired? Plus he was horribly rude when we inquired about the status of our to go order. Don't know who this guy is but he's a buzz kill and a jerk to boot. Won't be coming back. Too many other great places to eat that truly enjoy good business. Also found a hair in two plates of food but we didn't complain. read more
