Honestly super impressed! I had stopped in early on in their Falmouth location and wasn't too impressed, but had a great experience this 2nd time. Sapporo might displace Yosaku as my go to lunch spot! The lunch menu is very reasonably priced, about $15-22 depending on what you get. 3 rolls for $18 is just about as good as it gets (lower for veggie) and they have some unusual additions as "standard" rolls including spicy scallop and real Maine crab California. I like that most of their hot food also has a smaller lunch portion as well. I've had the katsu before, would recommend. They also have kids sets including a sushi set, which is a big deal for me because my kid can be more expensive than me if I order her à la carte inari depending on the spot. Overall the ease of parking and beautiful interior make this tempting to just skip going into Portland when the sushi craving hits. read more

I've eaten there two times now and felt that while there were aspects that were great, it was mostly just good. Great would definitely start with their green salad with miso dressing. This salad is big, full of fresh veggies, and had a delicious dressing. The sushi I've tried has been good. We very much enjoyed the red dragon roll off the special menu. The seafood was fresh. I had also tried the spicy scallop roll, which I did not care for as the scallop was raw. I'm used to cooked scallop in sushi, and the raw was not a good texture for me. The servers are great and attentive. It is in a beautiful new space on Route One in Falmouth with plenty of parking. We will definitely try it again. read more

My review is kind of unique and I'll have to go back. I absolutely love, sushi and I have my favorite spots I do like to go to. Inside of the restaurant is new, well decorated and presents exceptionally well. They seemed short staffed which happens. We ordered a specialty roll, which was very good and then some individual rolls. Where my mixed review comes in was the soy sauce that you mix with the wasabi. I have never had saltier soy sauce to date almost like drinking ocean water. The sodium levels were through the roof for my pallet. There does appear to be two options on the table, which are not clearly marked. I tried both. It could've been a unique scenario, but my tongue felt pickled, which took away from the meal being served and enjoying. read more

I really like Sapporo! It's a casual sushi restaurant with fresh fish, and a healthy assortment of classic sushi dishes, and plenty of options for vegetarians, fish lovers, and meat eaters alike. I ordered the chirashi (an assortment of sashimi atop a bed of rice) which comes with miso soup, and the shumai (small shrimp dumplings with a waterier, soy-like dipping sauce. Both were great. They have a great cocktail menu and sake as well. The interior is a bit outdated, hence the 4 star rating. However, I think it rivals Benkay in quality of sushi. Service is good, not great. I got the chicken and veg Yakisoba it was ok but really lacked depth and not a large amount for the $$. The sushi..I'm someone who loves all kinds of sush but I couldn't even finish it :( the beef teriyaki was tender and veggies were good but the price and amount was again lacking. I treated myself after a personal win over anxiety. I've been here once before and had a mixed experience. This meal was somewhat better, though still flawed. Plum wine - fresh and fruity, perfect accompaniment for my food Shrimp and vegetable tempura - Tasty, but the batter was too oily, and the portion size was too small. Smoked sake (salmon) maki - It was okay, but nothing special. Unagi (freshwater eel) sashimi - The standout from my last meal, and my introduction to eel. It was excellent as expected. I've yet to have bad eel actually, and I guess now it's just a thing I love, and Sapporo's is up to the same standard as everywhere else I've tried it. Tempura cheesecake - AMAAZING, very rich, very filling. Damn, that's something else. Ricotta style cheesecake, inside the crunchy tempura shell, not oily like the app, just all out awesomeness. Service was friendly and attentive. I gather there was someone new learning the ropes, so like they didn't know some of the menu items. Also the soy sauce bottle was missing from my table, and my table was wobbly - minor things, but they affect the experience. Service is atrocious. Order takeout for $100 and I showed up when it said the order was ready. The ordered clearly hadn't even be started so I asked to cancel. I got the run around for the next 20 minutes, including that the restaurant was "really" busy. There were three tables occupied in the entire place. Order finally appeared, but no apology. This is too bad because the downtown location is excellent and the people are great. This one is closer but I won't be back. read more

Have been coming here for years. It is one of my husbands favorite Sushi spots. It's a great spot for drinks, just sitting and catching up and eating some great sushi or Japanese cuisine. They have a Sushi bar to see your sushi being created. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. They close at 2 pm and reopen at 5 for dinner. So we walk across the street to this Japanese restaurant. To our surprise, it's a quite big set up. Girlfriend ordered house salad, and i really want some cooked veggie, then i ask the waiter whether they can make a stirfry veggie for me as on the menu they only do stirfry noodle with veggie. My wife was very hyped about this place and despite how many years i have have lived here, I've never been, so we made a reservation. They have their own lot, which is a blessing in the Old Port (IYKYK). A sign is clearly posted in several spots saying they are short staffed, you will be kept waiting and your patience is appreciated. I appreciate them being up front about it. Eventually we sat outside and ordered our drinks and apps. The drinks came and after one sip of this (way too expensive for the size) Mai Thai, it had to be sent back. It was clear to my pallet that this is bottom of the well cheapest rum possible. It tasted so bad, I just couldn't. The server took it off the bill without me even having to ask so points to her. The apps were very good. Tasty, well made and the typical serving portions. We enjoyed sharing them. My entree was a major disappointment for me. The pork was fried, which the waitress said only happened with the katsu (NOT the bowl. I asked explicitly before it was ordered.) and the meat was SO chewy and over cooked. Worse, the menu simply says "rice and vegetables with egg" (i believe) and gives ZERO specification as to WHAT veggies. People (like me) have allergies! I was distracted by the horror of the drink and forgot to say "no mushrooms" so bite ONE and instantly (!!) I know the issue. Luckily my reaction isn't hospital level, but others are not that fortunate. That doesn't remove the mushroom liquor from the bowl tho, so it is inedible. LIST THE INGREDIENTS!! I accept it was something I could/should have said, so I brought home mine to give my dad for babysitting while we were out instead of making (as big an issue) out of it, as it deserved to be. (In fairness, dad was happy with what he had and ate it all.) We still had a bill nearing $70 after(!) the drink was removed, so I will absolutely not be going back. That is despite my wife pointing out the seasonal happy hour possibilities (cuz buisness after tourist season) since it is clear the menu can't be trusted. read more

I feel awful having to write this, but it's my honest opinion. Sushi can definitely be a preference thing, but it fell flat in multiple areas. I actually went back twice to see if maybe day, time, server was a factor. Sadly, both times it was the same. First issue was it took forever for us to get our food both times... we were there for 2+ hrs and not because we were being social or because the restaurant was full. Party of 4 both times, ordered mostly sushi the first time and a mix of sushi, apps and entrees the second time. The service both times was so so, they were nice, but we had to ask several times for things and they brought the wrong food 2 x. The food was mediocre at best and unfortunately we live in one of the best foodie cities in the country so standards are high around here. The ambiance and decor were beautiful, the hostess that sat us was kind. I do believe they were all trying, but it was a let down. We really needed more options in Falmouth so I was really hoping this would be a hit! I may give them one more try, but we have ordered most everything on the menu in each "category" at this point, but I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt as they are a getting reestablished. read more

Sunny patio sushi? Sunny patio sushi! Legendary in the lunch scene is the sushi lunch, and few do it better than Sapporo. The two roll combos all come in under $10 with miso soup and that's just a helluva deal. We stopped by the other day when it was finally warm enough to sit outside. We were there about noon as they opened, but at least this time of year, that patio is full sun in the afternoon so no need to worry about being sat in the shade. Kai was our server and super on the ball, efficient and friendly. I had the Boston roll and the crunchy, spicy, tuna roll, which is now a new favorite. If you look at the photo, you'll see that they make it spicy by rolling it in chili powder (cayenne?), whereas some chains just have a spicy sauce they drizzle. I'm much more a fan of the chili powder. All in all, an amazing lunch for very little money. Just waiting on the next warm day to go back! read more

We came here pre-pandemic (back in February), drawn in by their happy hour special. It never really occurred to us to eat here in all the times we've been to the Old Port, but for $4 rolls? Hell yeah! We got an assortment of maki rolls, as well as some cheap sake, and had a great time in this cozy low-key restaurant. The rolls themselves were pretty decent. It's not going to blow your mind, but for $4-6 per roll, I'm not complaining. Everything was made the way it should be. The fish tasted fresh. The rice had the right consistency and flavor. The tempura was well-fried. They didn't skimp in any way. We were pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately they only do happy hour in the winter, but we will be back even outside of that to enjoy some reasonably priced sushi in a nice, surprisingly quiet ambiance. read more

I took my family here while on vacation hoping to get a good meal. We ordered a kids chicken teriyaki meal, donkatsu, Boston roll, Salmon roll and the ramen. No one enjoyed their food here! I ate one bite of the ramen which is hard to mess up and I couldn't eat another bite. It smelled like an old rug and tasted like it too. Went here as a family member wanted to try this place as a treat for their birthday. Walking in, there was a note in the door stating service might be slow as they were short staffed. We ordered some rolls as appetizers. They were all good, but we all liked the Yam Potato one the most. Try it, it's good. We got 4 different meals, everyone tried everyone else's. The chicken was super dry. Panko was good, but one had a curry sauce and one didn't. Both were just dry meat. Three of our party thought our waiter was rude. They were not speaking English most of the time. Not sure if waiter was just short or was afraid he couldn't understand them, but I would agree he wasn't good. No refills on drinks unless we asked (ie: water, soda). Gave us a bill when we didn't ask for one and he didn't ask if we wanted desert. He didn't seem to me to be nicer or better to the English speaking/ "white" other tables. Probably wouldn't go back, because why go to a place that makes you feel uncomfortable, but I might try it with a different group/ people only speaking English. read more

My favorite sushi haunt in Portland. The lunch specials throughout the week (not weekend) are a true deal. Food is GREAT. Service is lovely. They're right downtown and they have a few parking spaces that I've never had trouble snagging. In the summer there's a lovely patio to watch Congress street roll by or you can go inside in wet weather for a cozy cup of tea. AND they have a changing table. Been coming for years. I was in Portland with some friends and we decided to come here and have some sushi for lunch. Overall, the experience was okay. It definitely seemed a little bit of a tourist trap once we walked in. The price was reasonable and the location was great... right on the water with a nice view. Biggest complaint is that the service was extremely slow and they weren't even that busy. The staff was really friendly but took a very long time for them to get to us. As far as the food it was A-Ok. I had some sushi rolls and my friend got the vegetable noodle soup. Overall, if you're dying for sushi not a bad place but wasn't super impressed and except to be there for a while. read more

My usual Japanese place is closed for relocation so I went here. Apparently my parents took us here as kids in the old spot over 20 years ago. Today we tried the lunch and was just disappointed by flavor. Miso soup filled to the brim, but just warm not steaming hot. A very subtle miso flavor with chunks of tofu and seaweed. It lacked the flavor punch when I think of miso soup. Squid salad lacked flavor. And exceptionally small for the price. It didn't taste like much at all, it could have used more lemon, more crunch more seasoning. The nabeyaki udon was also not the flavor profile I was expecting. There were snap peas and carrots boiled with the broth, because that was all I could taste- boiled veggie broth. Not a sweet subtle Japanese soup. Hearty chunks of chicken and poached egg. But the noodles were a bit too chewy and the tempura with it tasted very greasy, oily and it coated my tongue in an unpleasant way. The 3 sushi roll lunch was okay. We found the rice under seasoned and a bit hard. The scallops had an unpleasant creamy texture, my date claimed it tasted fishy I did not feel that way. It just wasn't amazing. It was okay. Minimal amounts of fish in the roll even for a lunch portion and price. The price for the lunch is unbeatable. However, flavors did not do it for me. It lacked the subtle but utterly tasty flavors of Japanese food I've grown up eating. I will not return. read more

We have a normal sushi spot we always go to. However, this Friday night, we wanted to be a little bit more daring. We always pass Sapporo on our many nights out in the Old Port. So, we took the plunge. Sapporo is a large restaurant with a prime spot in the busyness of Commercial Street. One thing that we enjoyed about Sapporo is that they actually have a Happy Hour! My SO started off with an order of Miso Soup. When our waiter returned, he also brought me an extra soup-- on the house. I didn't think the Miso Soup was horrible. But apparently, my SO did. He didn't like the aftertaste of it and didn't enjoy the baby chunks they served. We ordered the Sushi Deluxe, the Negi-Hama, and The Spicy Salmon. Once again, everything was just... not horrible, but not the best. We left pretty content, but not sure if we will return. read more
