We had such an incredible time at James Beard finalist for 2026: Izakaya Minato. We decided to head up to Maine for my birthday and this was the place I was the most excited to try the entire weekend. Given that my wife and I are from Los Angeles, we have always been craving great sushi on the East Coast so we decided to go with the nine course Omakase at Izakaya Minato. It was such a special experience, ranging from the bar seating which allow us to see everything that was happening behind the scenes in the kitchen, to the incredible service from the multitude of servers who served us throughout the night, to the incredible food for a great price. Food was tasty but pricey for the portion. We came at 7pm but had to wait over an hour for a table. The host was kind and gave us some recommendations for pre dinner drinks. When we sat down, we luckily ate some bar snacks from across the street. We ordered a bunch of small plates to share among the two of us and some were more impressive than others. The vibes of the place is definitely cozy and dimly lit. The dish I liked the most was the black cod. The ones I liked least was the fish collar and the salad. Both were a bit too salty for my taste. The overall seasoning used was flavorful but didn't have depth to it to justify the price in my opinion. I would save this for a cute date but won't come back just for the food. read more

For what it's worth, I'd say its five stars. The prices are unbeatable for the quality of food you're getting, however it's a restaurant built around small plates of food, so it'll probably take you a few to get filled up. This is a great place to get appetizers before your real dinner, since they don't have any main dishes and exclusively serve smaller plates. read more

I don't get it. For starters, the dining room is disgusting. Crumbs everywhere and it was barely getting into service. Fingerprints and smears on the shoji. If you're nominated from the JBF, you'd expect seasoning in the food. I lived in Japan for years and this was way off. Missing seasoning in everything was the biggest offense though & idek how that's possible with Japanese cuisine. I understand that it's "hip" to not be in uniform and look like a pirate; but it just killed the entire vibe. Wearing tennis shoes that look like you pulled them out of the trash is crazy & they're not even non-slip. Well, I get it. We can't all have and uphold high standards. If you want to serve bad food to tourists just move the business to the wharf. read more

Izakaya Minato is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland maine! Amazing drinks great service, lovely food, always some fun music playing very hip setting. I have a friend in town visiting from Philadelphia so I want to show him a couple of the staple spots in Portland Maine. We did have a good dinner, though there were a couple dishes that I was a little disappointed in. We shared the Toro special and the fish tasted old. Then we had the yaki sakana and it also was meh, the JFC, beef yukke, and kinoko salad were spot on. The Toro was on special along with the grilled oysters with a mayo type sauce which were delicious. I will always come back to Minato even with the little fish issues, I'm sure it won't be a repeat situation. I will share if it happens again. I first ate here after being told by two Portland residents that this is the best restaurant in town (high praise for such a culinary scene!). Since then, I've dined at Izakaya Minato three more times, eaten at a bunch of top-notch places on the peninsula, and I gotta say -- they're right. I recommend this place to everyone, and it is the first restaurant I bring friends and relatives to when they visit Portland. The main downside of the restaurant is that the wait time is so long. We usually have to wait between 60-90 minutes to get a table for 2 since they don't take reservations for parties that are fewer than 4 (so definitely make a reservation if you're 4+!). But you can always wait it out over a drink at Oxbow, Hardshore, or Anoche across the street, and every time, the wait has been worth it for us. The restaurant is a bit crowded, but cozy inside, and they have outdoor seating when the weather is nice. We haven't had a bad meal, or even a bad dish, at Izakaya Minato. Every plate is tender, flavorful, and meticulously crafted. Some highlights: the bacon-wrapped mochi, minato age dofu, yaki sakana, and age ochazuke (get it with ikura!). The JFC is of course delicious, and the uni spoon and motoyaki oyster are umami flavor bombs. In short: you can't go wrong. The prices are also really reasonable here for the quality of the food. Last time, I came here with three other people, we stuffed ourselves with food, and the bill came out to about $36/person after tax and tip (though we didn't order cocktails, which I think helped). I haven't had a chance yet to try their omakase, but I'm planning to next time. I can't wait to be back! read more

Once, when we were sitting at the bar, a drunk Australian next to us claimed that this was the best Japanese restaurant he'd visited outside of Japan. After he left, I jokingly said to the bartender that this was my favorite restaurant in the world; in the five visits since, I think that's become true. Get the omakase and a couple items off the rotating menu, like the chicken-stuffed shiitake, fish collar, crab tofu soup, or corn fritters. It'll be too much food, but you'll eat it all. read more

Was recommended this place by our server at another great restaurant.....and we were very very impressed. We decided to do the omekase which was a great price for the amount of food served. Dish after dish of amazing food came out....and we felt like we got to try the entire menu!!!! My boyfriend who is a big eater was full by the time we were done (and that's not easy to do). Nice pacing on when each plate was brought out. Everything was delicious. Some standouts were the sashimi and the oysters. Had sake to pair with the dinner and it did not disappoint either. The restaurant is small and fills up very quickly after opening. They don't take reservations unless you have group. Recommend getting here right when they open to get a seat. An exceptional omakase experience hiding right underneath your nose! My husband and I sat up at the bar for my birthday dinner and for less than $100 (for both of us) had a 7-course omakase that has been one of our favorite meals to date in Portland. Note: I think they spoiled us with an extra 2 dishes since we were celebrating a special occasion! We started off with the Motoyaki Oyster (a broiled oyster with ponzu & a miso custard) - this alone is worth the trip to Izakaya Minato. They kept pumping through courses: the Japanese fried chicken, garlic edamame, kimchi cha-han, the uni spoon and okonomiyaki. The okonomiyaki is comfort food for me and besides the Motoyaki Oyster, it was my favorite dish of the night. They sent out a sweet scoop of ice cream and a birthday shot on the house. With the customary lanterns hanging up at the bar and a clear view of the chefs in the back whipping up dishes, Izakaya Minato has the coolest vibe. PROS. -Best sashimi I ever had! I was hoping for sushi rolls, but I should have checked the menu before coming. -We were able to be seated within 10 minutes which worked out really well. CONS. - Recommend skipping the edamame if you're normally a fan. It was wet and had garlic chunks. Edamame is delicious with just salt, why mess with the flavor and add such a strong spice to it? - The waiter unfortunately did not know the menu well and in answer to our few questions -- like if a certain dish came with protein or not -- he had to run back and ask the kitchen. - When asked what the "To Finish" section on the far right of the menu meant, he explained that the menu went from lighter dishes on the left to heavier on the right... which didn't make much sense when my "To Finish" choice came out and it was a ball of rice with hardly any kimchi (which was in the name of the dish) and only an egg yolk for the protein (which cost extra). -The worst part, and this is solely on the waiter (maybe it was his first day?) was that I brought my daughter and she ordered her own entree. As the dishes were coming out sporadically, we thought hers was a little later than all the others. When I asked where hers was, he didn't apologize but said, "Oh! I thought because you were gluten free the whole order was gluten free so I didn't put that one in." He didn't put her order in, because I was gluten free?? Then he said, "Would you like me to put it in now?" Sad face!! My daughter and I were heading to the State Theater so we couldn't wait for the order to come out and she left without a full meal. Went before an event across the street and had a lovely meal at the bar. This place can be a pain to get into and doesn't take reservations, also parking on this street can be difficult. Had a few fishy things, a tofu soup and a few lovely cocktails. Everything was really tasty, including the cocktails! The space is cute and it was fun. Was eating with a friend an it was the type of place that food comes out when its done and not necessarily as a table so I was done eating by the time my friend got her food. I came here in a party of 2 on a weekday evening (without a reservation) and had to wait ~30 min for a table. Food / Drinks: Fabulous options that were very good - though I will note that our favorites were the Japanese fried chicken and the udon. Will probably not order the beef again but was okay I suppose. My only complaint was that our hot sake was served as we were finishing up our food instead towards the beginning (they did warn us it would take a few minutes to heat up..) Atmosphere: We sat outside on a nice day. I suppose the kids these days would say "the vibes were immaculate" ha! Service: Standard but good overall. Their biggest sell is awesome food options that are unmatched here in Portland. In all honesty, I would have given Izakaya Minato 3.5, but rounded up because of the friendly staff and nice vibes. It has interesting Japanese-inspired dishes, but the biggest drawback was the HEAVY use of salt that I personally don't think is in the spirit of Japanese cuisine and flavors. Nearly every dish was over-salted to the point where I was gulping down water throughout and after the meal. I really wanted to love this meal, but agree with a lot of the other reviews that the flavors weren't quite there. Our favorite bites of the night were the Motoyaki Oyster (punchy flavor and fresh oysters) and Kamo Yaki Udon (well-cooked noodles and duck). Our least favorite were the sashimi and bluefin tuna poke, mostly due to the perceived quality of fish. My partner got the whiskey flight and as a lover of Japanese whiskey, thought it was a good variety (with some clearly better than the others) and better value compared to the single pour whiskeys on the menu. Portland's food scene certainly has its share of standouts, and Izakaya Minato is worth checking out, though some of the dishes were, for my taste, too heavy-handed with the salt. I recommend that if possible, you get the omakase, rather than ordering dishes a la carte (just a note that the whole group has to do it) - it's a good way to try almost all of the menu and the portions were enough so that my husband and I were a good type of stuffed by the end. Also recommend getting here as soon as they open if you're a party of 1, 2, or 3, since they only take reservations for parties of 4 and up. The menu is divvied up into categories of starters, farm, and sea, as well as ... carbs. We started with the garlic edamame and kinoko salad. I would skip the edamame next time, since it was overpoweringly garlicky. The sautéed mushrooms on the salad was delicious and meaty, little umami bombs. Definitely a vegetarian dish that rivaled the fish and meat options. The chef's sashimi was beautiful cuts of tuna and salmon and whitefish, though I wish the portion was larger, especially if I was with a larger group. I preferred the simplicity of the sashimi over the shichimi tuna, which was doused in a creamy ponzu sauce that didn't really add much. We also had to get the tuna belly crudo, which was cut and presented expertly. By far, my favorite dish of the night was some sort of fried off-menu fish (blanking on the name) covered in some sort of soy sauce. The outside was the perfect crunch, inside was steaming and flaky. In addition to the garlic edamame, I'd skip the bacon mochi next time. It was an interesting dish, for sure, but the chewiness of the mochi definitely gave my jaw a workout. I also didn't like the oyster as much as I thought I would. The miso custard was, similar to other dishes, too salty and just dominated the taste. JFC and kimchi fried rice were nice ways to round out our meal. I was still a little hungry by then and it was tasty way to fill up. Overall, some interesting combinations and takes on traditional izakaya options but all the sauces tasted similar ... and very salty. I always have to remind myself to drink more water but this time I had absolutely no problem guzzling each cup. As a note on timing/pacing, I wouldn't do the omakase if you have somewhere to be. Our cold starter dishes came out quickly enough but there was a sizable gap as soon as they started rolling out the proteins and hot food. read more

Easily my new favorite spot in Portland. The space is great. Be warned - this is not a quiet traditional dining experience! It's pleasant, friendly, noisy and always crowded, with great bar seating and shared tables in the bar, and a few inside and outside (!) tables as well. Reservations for 4 or more only, but a predicted 25 min was only 10 min for 3 of us last week. The food is Japanese small plate style, fresh and beautifully prepared. Whatever the specials are, order them. The fried chicken and the udon are delicious staples. I was less impressed by the sashimi. Maybe it was just not a great fish day- it happens. I have not tried the omakase - chefs choice sampling menu, served for whole table only at $42/ea, with a reservation and an hours notice, but I bet it's the standout. The small bar runs nonstop with custom cocktails - good mixologists- and a great (for Portland) selection of sakes. If you are a true sake aficionado, adjust your expectations and you'll find plenty to satisfy. The beer list is carefully curated for the food. Nice touch. 4 out of 5 only for the prices - 5 small plates, 1 cocktail and 2 beers ran us $150 w/o tip. They add an automatic 3% for the back of the house. Casual, hipster joint with izakaya! We ordered the Omakaze, or chef's tasting menu. At $45 per person, it's a serious value for five artfully composed courses -- the sake list is well composed and we found the option to select your own sake cup a quaint touch! Service was attentive and outstanding! The space is tiny and tight, some of the patio seating isn't comfortable for people who need back support or a bigger seat than a pine rail. Really struggled with the review for this place - I would put it at a 3.5 but rounding down because of pricing. Really wanted to love this place but overall slightly disappointed here. We made a reservation for dinner on a Saturday night for a group of seven. Interior is quite small and wouldn't recommend for large groups, they only had a few spots for groups so if you do go, definitely make a res early. There's a few outdoor seats as well but close to the sidewalk and lots of people waiting outside by the door so not sure it would be a good experience. Drinks- honestly the highlight of this dinner. They had an extensive cocktail list which were unique and had a Japanese twist to all of them (ie. miso vodka, plum wine, etc). Sake you can drink out of cute mismatched handmade cups. Omakase - our whole table ordered the Omakase for $40 pp, which comes as an assortment of dishes on the menu that the chef picks. Everyone at the table has to order the omakase. It was definitely enough food and I honestly wouldn't recommend doing this as there were a few dishes you can skip. Food - favorite dishes were the sashimi, garlic edamame, JFC. We got the cabbage pancake which had bonito flakes. I thought was a bit odd and mushy and would definitely skip. Also got the kimchi fried rice which was disappointing...the rice was dry and lacked flavor. Also all the food was very salty, ended up drinking so much water. Also didn't help that it was pretty hot in the restaurant and the waiters did their best to keep the doors close to not let the AC escape. Minato is a popular Japanese tapas restaurant with a lot of hype and often long waits, so does it live up to it? Let's get the bad out of the way: -Other reviews have mentioned this, but there is a rude employee who should not be in a customer facing role. Saying lines such as "You're blocking the entrance, leave" is not appropriate, and she continued to menacingly glare at us all night. -It's a cramped, loud space and is not a leisurely dinner, so keep that in mind. -The food is mostly varying ranges of good, but not great. -Minato is certainly not alone in this, but an unmentioned 3% service fee tacked on to the bill is never ok with me. Increase your food prices and pay your staff more, but don't surprise me with hidden fees. With that out of the way, there's a lot of good here. The cocktails are seriously some of the best in town, and the food menu is fun and very reasonably priced (most items in the $6-$12 range). -JFC: I always order this. It's overly salty in a great, junk food fried chicken way, and the sauce is addicting. -Pork belly: The best dish of the night. It almost was more of a short rib, was a good size and was perfectly tender. -Cabbage pancake with bacon: A unique dish and the bacon and sauce were decadent. I'm mixed on the cabbage. -Raw Tuna: Elegantly presented and fresh. -Kimchi Fried Rice with egg yolk: I found this mildly disappointing. Most local Chinese restaurants have better fried rice. -Daily Vegetable Tempura: Overly salty in a bad way. Most local Japanese restaurants have better tempura. I was solidly full after splitting the above and fairly buzzed after two drinks. Total bill of $55 each after tax, tip and service fee is great value. I don't think I'd wait two hours for a table, but if you can catch Minato on a quieter night, it's a worthy addition to the East Bayside food scene. read more

Cozy little Japanese restaurant with a clearly well-thought-out menu. My partner and I walked in a bit after 5 on a Wednesday evening and the place was full by the time we left just over an hour later, so best bet for walk-ins is probably to show up sometime between when they open (5pm) and 5:30pm to avoid a wait. I'm usually not a huge oyster person, but I tried the broiled oyster with miso custard, and it singlehandedly won me over to the side of oysters. I am now an oyster fan. The miso custard complimented the brininess of the oyster well and also, admittedly, made it look less intimidating to this oyster beginner. We also ordered a few other dishes, including the sashimi, the fried chicken, and tofu. The dishes came out as they were ready, which ended up being a bit out of order from what we were expecting (ex. something from the last part of the menu came out first), but since it's all small plates anyway, we didn't really mind. It was almost a 5 star but I felt rushed out of there. The service was great but they were to quick with the dishes and then brought the bill without even asking about another drink. We were quite impressed by the quality and uniqueness of the foods here! We tasted something different with almost every dish compared to all the Japanese / izakaya restaurants we've been to over the years! One problem for me was the salt level. I'm not sure if this is a Maine kinda thing cuz the restaurant we went to the day prior was also very salt heavy! If the salt level was lessened, I would give 5 stars. The best dish was the JFC! We had to order seconds! This dish was perfectly seasoned and not overly salty! The chicken was so juicy and tender. The temperature was just the way it should be - piping hot! I didn't need any sauce to eat this at all. The sauce was just sitting there looking pretty. Probably hands down one of the best karaage we've had! The cod collars were cooked perfectly and super tender. The star in the ochazuke was the onigiri which was nice and crispy even after sitting inside the soup. A little sad both these dishes were too salty. The ochazuke didn't have the usual nice tea flavor maybe overpowered by salt. My second favorite was the yaki udon. The duck breast was super tender. The udon had a really nice build up in spiciness. The tomato crab salad was a star too with super sweet and fresh crab! I rarely get super fresh crab in a crab salad. I did also feel the oysters had potential. It was lightly boiled Maine oyster in miso custard and ponzu. He somehow got the best timing in cooking the oyster so you taste warm oyster but with a raw texture. However the salt level in this dish was overbearing to the point I almost couldn't tolerate! The chicken meatballs and mochi bacon were also overwhelmingly salty. They would have been great. After two nights of back to back salty dinner, I literally woke up the next day with extreme dizziness due to dehydration despite drinking lots of water during all my meals! Make sure to hydrate a lot after eating here especially if you are used to eating lower salt diet. read more

Probably one of the best spots I dined at during my visit in Portland. Might be little bias since I do enjoy Japanese food and izakaya. Not 5 star only bc the dishes were on the saltier side for my preference. I prefer very light salt. All the dishes were cooked well. JFC is a must one of the better karage that I've had and that includes LA and Japan. Crab salad was more on my side of saltiness and highlights more of the ingredients. Daily tempura thank as excellent right temp and lightly battered as it should be. Aged ochazuke rice ball is grilled which is the first time I've had it this way. This spot is underrated. Had an awesome experience this week. Ordered a few appetizers and the kimchi fried rice and that was more than enough for the two us. Particularly liked the chilled grilled eggplant with shishito peppers and the fried monkfish with broth. The nine tailed fox was a fabulous cocktail. Where to start? I love their food, ambiance, and of course the choice of sakis. Of course the JFC -- Japanese Fried Chicken-- is super tasty, and occasionally I do have to order that. But if you can, unless you're with a big party, save your taste buds and tummy space for the seafood. So fresh. So delicious. I was lucky enough to have a dear friend in Portland who introduced me to this place. And every time I visited her, it was a must-stop. Once we started with the Day Boat scallops. And they were so good, we had them for dessert too. I always order the warm mushroom salad (because, mushrooms!) and the mochi bacon (because mochi bacon!). And the Uni Spoon if it's available. I love this cozy little restaurant! The drinks are very refreshing. We love the Wasabi Island and I got a There She Goes which was another refreshing drink that was delicious. The specials are always very good. They had an uni spoon which was amazing and pork belly with the hot mustard was also good (I would always get this). The kakigage was super light. The crudo special was a scallop one called Wasabi Hotate, which had a kick to it! In addition to the specials, we got the Motoyaki Oyster which is always a favorite for me. We also got the Minato Age Dofu which was okay, but I'm not a big tofu fan in general. The Shichimi Tuna was good, but not as good as I remembered.
